On Today's Episode, I'm joined by Andy Thompson, Managing Director at SailGP, an international sailing competition, where teams compete across a season of multiple grands prix (GP) around the world in cities like New York, Sydney, San Francisco, and Portsmouth. Andy's career spans the likes of Deloitte, London 2012, and Americas Cup - where he was first introduced to both Sailing and SailGP founders, Larry Ellison and Russell Coutts - who aspired to create a commercially viable sailing series. In this conversation we discuss Andy's journey, as well as the journey of this upstart league, which was only founded in 2019, but now finds itself with 13 races and 12 teams, with owners like Ben Ainsley and Kylian Mbappe and blue-chip sponsors like Emirates, Accor, and Rolex. Newstalk ZB's sports news director Clay Wilson and sports journalist Nicky Styris join the Sports Huddle. It's been a terrible week for Liam Lawson who was dropped by Red Bull, who are saying part of the reason was due to his mental health. What do the Sports Huddle make of the decision? Nicky Styris says it depends on whether you think he should've been in the car in the first place. Four of the top six Super Rugby sides are from Australia, why? And the Sports Huddle discuss whether New Zealand should fund the Americas Cup. LISTEN ABOVE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Here we go again – the America's Cup. How many times have you heard the debates for and against the America's Cup? The Government, as you will have heard, has declined the opportunity to invest in hosting the America's Cup in 2027 and the usual arguments are raging over the wisdom or otherwise of that decision. Tātaki Auckland Unlimited (TAU) chief executive Nick Hill said it was with great disappointment that they were confirming that Auckland would no longer be bidding to host the 2027 America's Cup, explaining that Auckland's bid was contingent on a three-way funding partnership between Auckland Council, central government, and the private sector. MBIE informed TAU that the government is unable to provide the funds required and, on that basis, he said, he bid cannot proceed. He said the situation illustrates the need for a long-term, sustainable funding model in New Zealand to support major events, and there, I would agree. Rather than having it on an ad hoc, piece meal, “hey, what about this guys?” kind of a basis, having some sort of structure to provide funding for major events as they come along would be a very good idea. Viv Beck, from Auckland's Heart of the City, also expressed her disappointment ruing a missed opportunity. “The reason it's so disappointing is it's ripe for the picking. I mean, we've got the infrastructure, the economic benefits would be there and if there had been quicker action on finding alternative funding. I mean we understand that there are other priorities for the government, but growth is also a big opportunity, a big priority and you know the reality is that the GST alone could pay for that money. So I think with some imagination and will and determination it could have been a different result. “We know we don't compete internationally now. Often, we don't, we're a small country, we get that. But I think we do have to have the energy and drive and will to try and find ways to actually grow this, because events are a great way of attracting people here. It's not just a one-time wonder that people come and have a great time. I mean the benefits from trade and jobs, international profile. You look at Barcelona. I mean, imagine if we had that in 2027, something along those lines at a time where we really do need to have something that actually excites people, that we actually are growing and not just full of problems.” Yes, yes, yes. But at risk of stating the obvious, we aren't bloody Barcelona, are we? We're not in the middle of Europe, surrounded by nations who are just a fair wind filling a spinnaker away. We're at the bottom, next stop, Antarctica. The last time New Zealand hosted our economy was left $293 million worse off. That was the 36th America's Cup in 2021, and that was according to an official cost benefit report. Auckland's economy alone was left with a financial deficit of $146 million, with a financial return of 72 cents back for every dollar put in. I am a financial and economic numpty, but even I can see that that does not make sense. To be fair, we were severely hampered by Covid-19, and according to the Trevor Mallard and the Clarke government – they crowed about the 2003 event, they said that generated around half a billion dollars of economic activity into the New Zealand economy which made the investment of around $10 million worthwhile. They said back in 2003, an extra 9360 full-time equivalent jobs were created. And while 85% of the extra economic activity was generated in Auckland, there was still a substantial effect in other regions as international visitors travel to other parts of the country. That was 22 years ago. The world is a vastly, vastly different place. Right now, an America's Cup is a nice to have. It would be lovely, it feels great. I've been in Auckland for a number of Americas Cup's, and they were fantastic, feel-good affairs. They boost morale, and the bars and restaurants do a roaring trade, and everyone with a bit of cash has a jolly good time. It's an absolute jolly. But then I'd like to put a pool in the backyard too, and I think ultimately it would have economic benefits, ultimately it would pay off. I could make the case that if I put in the money now, then I could put in the pool and get the pay off later. Well, except it's a nice to have right now. There are other priorities, and I would say the Government is absolutely damned if it does and damned if it doesn't. This is the price we pay for spending up over the last few years. I'm sure we could find the money. Admittedly, this Government doesn't have Grant Robertson's knack of finding millions down the back of the couch – he always seemed to pop up with $460 million just when it was needed. But what do the optics look like? Cutting the ribbon at a pared down Dunedin hospital while Auckland has a knees up on-board boats and drinking champagne, sure that's going to look fantastic, isn't it? Labour would be bleating away about “unnecessary expense” and “look at the waiting lists”. They're absolutely damned if they do, damned if they don't. We were warned. Wise souls told us on the show, during Labour's hoot's wahay spend up that ultimately, we would have to pay the piper, and this, turning down the opportunity to host an America's Cup is what it feels like. A renewed push for an Auckland bed tax, after a strong summer for its hotels. They experienced a five-million-dollar boost, largely due to SailGP and country musician Luke Combs' Eden Park concerts in January. CBRE Hotels and Leisure says an extra eight-thousand hotel rooms were booked over the four days. Heart of the City Chief Executive, Viv Beck told Andrew Dickens she supports a bed tax, as a way to fund these events which bring people to Auckland. She says it's thought that could contribute to the America's Cup - but time is of the essence, to get it across the line. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Conosco aqui, a educadora física, 3. David shares the story of his latest love affair, after falling for Seabreeze III, a 48-year-old classic 105-foot motoryacht, that he is acquiring for the rapidly growing, Ocean Sailing Expeditions fleet. After stumbling across Seabreeze III, 2-months ago and reading all about the painstaking restoration undertaken from 2019-2021 at a cost of more than $3.3m, by the current "motivated vendors", it was just too hard to go past. David openly shares the story of the roller coaster ride with Ocean Sailing Expeditions over the past 5 years and why this addition to the business makes total sense, even though its powered by motor and not sail. David dives into the business history, challenges, set backs and growth story. If you own a boat or a business, you'll relate to many of these challenges. This episode includes an exclusive new, one-time Membership and Shareholder offer, to help fund the acquisition of the vessel. You can benefit significantly by accessing sailing adventures at 30-100% discount in return for a one-off investment. Seabreeze III will operate around New Zealand, offering cruises and expeditions to the Bay of Islands, Hauraki Gulf, Marlborough Sounds, Nelson/Tasman Region, Fiordland and Stewart Island, in the warmer months of the year and head to Fiji for 4 months each winter. With 4 different deck levels, Seabreeze III is the perfect on the water, viewing platform for special events such as Sail GP, the Americas Cup and Round-the-World race leg starts and finishes in Auckland. Seabreeze III will join the Ocean Sailing Expedition's, events calendar from late November 2024 and also offer private charter booking opportunities. Sea Breeze III can carry 12 overnight on 99 onboard for day excursions. Sir Ben Ainslie is a name many people will recognise. As Britain's most successful sailor, Ben won medals in five consecutive Olympic games from 1996, including Gold at the four games held between 2000 and 2012. Ben and his wife, Georgie, join Kenton today to talk about life after the Olympics. Ben and Georgie make a formidable partnership. Whilst Ben is Team Principal and CEO of Ineos Britannia - the team attempting to win the Americas Cup for Britain for the first time - Georgie has founded a start-up called Ainslie + Ainslie. Kenton discusses with them the importance of communication, the intensity of competition, the constant balance between work and family, leadership under pressure and, of course, their new night powder which is working wonders for Kenton's sleep... This episode is one not to be missed even if, like Kenton, you're more comfortable on dry land than on a boat. https://benainslie.com/

Dougal Allan is a kid from a place called Foxton who has now become an integral part of Team New Zealand for the Americas Cup.He etched his name in Coast to Coast record books with an incredible nine podium finishes in 10 attempts in the iconic south island event.Simply put- the man is a savage. This is a small part of the Dougal Allan story…and we recorded it on his 39th birthday immediately after a full day of training with Team NZ! Thanks to my pals at Generate and Radix for sponsoring this episode.I recently found out that around half a million Kiwis are missing out on the KiwiSaver Government contribution, which is an extra $521 each year. That's where Generate comes in. They have a team of advisers who can come to you, go over your options, and help make sure you're getting the most out of your Kiwisaver investment. If you've never got KiwiSaver advice before, do your future self a favour. Head to their website to request a meeting with a Generate adviser.https://www.generatewealth.co.nz/domA copy of their product disclosure statement is available on their website. The issuer of the scheme is Generate Investment Management Limited and of course past performance does not guarantee future returns. Radix have also backed this episode. Dougal and his mates have known about Radix for years. It's a massive brand in the elite and pro circles. Its only now that the rest of us are learning how their nutritional products can improve our quality of life.https://radixnutrition.co.nz/ Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

On this episode of Lochhead on Marketing, we enjoy the first of many visits from Al Ramadan in 2024, as we talk about moving from being a Category Contender to a Category King. We'll dig into what is a category contender in what it takes to win the 18-to-36-month epic category battle that every tech startup faces. So if you're an entrepreneur or marketing leader who wants to go beyond competing to actually create and dominate your own market, you're in the right place. Welcome to Lochhead on Marketing. The number one charting marketing podcast for marketers, category designers, and entrepreneurs with a different mind. Al Ramadan on Tech Industry Category Development and Dominance Christopher and Al discuss the concept of being category contenders, reflecting on past research and their book on category kings. They emphasize the dominance of one company, earning around 76% of the economics in every tech category, despite skepticism. They outline the three phases of category development: define, develop, and dominate, taking approximately 15 years. They note outliers like open AI and Google's swift battles, contrasting with Salesforce's longstanding dominance. They highlight the importance of category design, likening it to a fast-paced battle where one company wins all, stressing its critical role in the tech industry's landscape. Market strategy in a competitive industry Al and Christopher discuss marketing strategies in a competitive industry, emphasizing the importance of a winner's mindset and setting the agenda. They share a scenario where a leader in a crowded field differentiates by framing the problem uniquely, focusing on end-user needs rather than feature sets like competitors. Both highlight the futility of incremental strategies and the significance of capturing mindshare by empathizing with customer problems. They term this the "Battle Royale" for mindshare, where winning means addressing the core problem effectively, rendering feature comparisons irrelevant. Christopher also stresses the pivotal role of understanding customer problems in securing market dominance. Category design and understanding customer needs Al and Christopher discuss category design and understanding customer needs. They highlight the importance of framing the problem uniquely to differentiate in a crowded market. Christopher shares a scenario where a leader in a competitive field focuses on customer needs while competitors emphasize feature sets. They critique the common focus on technology rather than customer-centric solutions, illustrating with examples from Gartner's history and Google Plus. They emphasize that categories are about customers' problems and opportunities, not just technology, stressing the significance of defining the problem scope to win in category battles. To hear more from this Al Ramadan and Christopher Lochhead dialogue, download and listen to this episode. Bio Al Ramadan is a co-founding partner of Play Bigger Advisors and coauthor of the book, Play Bigger. He also co-founded Quokka Sports, which revolutionized the way people experience sport online. Al then joined Macromedia and Adobe, where he spent almost ten years changing the way people think about great digital experiences. At Adobe, Al led teams that created the Rich Internet Applications category and helped develop the discipline of experience design. In the early ‘90s he applied data science to Australia's Americas Cup — an innovation in sports performance analytics. His work in sailing led directly to the idea for Quokka.
