Hannah grew up in a farming community but followed a career into corporate life working with multinational companies, including 5 years with the retailer Tesco. She completed an MBA at Stanford University before returning to the UK and agriculture, when she acquired PBS International, a company which makes products for plant breeders and seed producers around the world. She describes her professional expertise as a stool with three legs, spanning agricultural technology, entrepreneurship & plant breeding. Hannah holds Board and advisory positions with several AgriTech companies including Crop Health and Protection, the UK's government-backed Agritech centre for Crops, and is Vice President of the National Association of Plant Breeders (although if this goes out in late August I'll be President by then!). She is the host of two podcasts: Plant Breeding Stories, which interviews a diverse range of people in and around plant breeding, and Innovating AgTech is an audio documentary about how to better align interests in AgTech entrepreneurship between the environment, farmers, entrepreneurs and investors. I first connected with Hannah as she was putting together this Innovating Agtech documentary-style podcast, and was very eager to both listen to the six-part series, and share some of her takeaways and perspectives with you here today. Agriculture has a great sustainability story to tell, but it must be backed by data.
SomaDetect has an innovative approach to this by focusing on the milk itself of each individual cow as it is collected.
Most milk data is still collected from bulk sampling, says SomaDetect CEO Bethany Deshpande.
SomaDetect: https://somadetect.com/ Prime Future Newsletter: https://primefuture.substack.com/ Our guest on today's show Jordan Lambert actually mentioned back on episode 261. She has a technology that is easily installed in a milking parlor that collects milk data at the individual cow level. Not just on milk quality - which is one big factor, but also on cow health. It turns out, the milk can tell us a lot about how that cow is doing. This way, a dairy producer can see trends in not just their herd as a whole, but also in individual cows. Bethany Deshpande is on the show. She is the CEO of SomaDetect, which is the company doing all that stuff I just mentioned. Bethany completed her PhD in Biology, and isn't from a dairy background originally, but started SomaDetect when she saw an opportunity in the industry to apply some technology originally developed by her father. We'll get more into that background later in the episode. But she's certainly dove headfirst into the dairy industry these past five years since starting the company. This is a great profile of what's possible as we continue to find new ways to both collect data, but really to put it into management practices. I think there's a lot of lessons to be learned here about the future of agriculture, whether dairy is of interest to you or not. Here is my conversation with SomaDetect CEO Bethany Deshpande.
On this month’s episode of Talk Dairy to Me, DFA’s innovation podcast, host Doug Dresslaer chats with DFA Accelerator alum, Bethany Deshpande, CEO of SomaDetect, and DFA member Natasha Sutherland of Stein Farms in Le Roy, N.Y., about how SomaDetect is empowering dairy farmers with the data to make better milk and improve the lives of their herd. The old saying “it’s lonely at the top” might be cliche, but there’s some truth to it. Which is why for Bethany Desphande community plays a key role in her growth as a CEO, and the growth of her business, SomaDetect. Bethany shares why finding and engaging with her community has been critical to the success of SomaDetect. “It becomes necessary to say, ‘Yeah, I don't know about this, but I can find out.’ And to take those steps forward to find people that can help you do that as well, to have a community around you that is able to listen to some of the struggles and listen to you in these moments of loneliness and uncertainty.” In this episode: The accidental discovery that led to SomaDetect The impact statements SomaDetect uses to guide all of their decision making and measure success Balancing feminine and masculine leadership Personal and business growth in community Finding and hiring women We invite you to become a SheEO Activator or apply to be a Venture at www.SheEO.World
Expectations Study hard. Get good grades. Get a good job. Work nine-to-five for the rest of your life. Coming from a conservative, middle-class family in India, Bharath Sudharsan never considered a career world outside of the standard that he grew up in. Then he came to North America and all of that changed. “There were so many entrepreneurial activities!” Bharath exclaims, still almost in disbelief. “Mental barriers are harder to surmount than any physical barrier… [there was an expectation that] you needed to be someone of a specific caliber or to have an MBA. North America taught me better.” The Creation of SomaDetect What does SomaDetect do? On the most basic level, (https://somadetect.com/) to manage their herds easier. However, there is nothing “basic” about SomaDetect. An Artificial Intelligence developed to monitor dairy cows 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to see how they drink, eat, produce milk, milk quality, etc. to help diagnose patterns that make herd management easier. Milk is a complicated fluid, an emulsion with fats, chemicals, and hormones, all moving at gushing speed under vacuum pressure. Being able to analyze the image of the milk with AI is where AI fits into the milk quality and herd management analysis. The more data that it collects over time, the better it is for future customers. What is AI? “In my opinion,” explains Bharath, “Artificial Intelligence is a simple program that you write that has a decision that it makes by itself; it is artificially inspired.” Where the intelligence gets a little fuzzier is when you begin to learn from your mistakes or “machine-learning.” This is how toddlers learn to walk; “step over the step and not run through it because then you will fall.” “Deep learning” goes a little bit further into the details, taking several parameters and making complicated analysis. AI goes one step further by artificially using deep learning. Breaking into Agriculture AI With a basic training in electronics from undergrad, Bharath found himself transitioning from signal processing to image processing. This is the difference between one dimensional to matrix, or, as Bharath says, “At least there’s pictures! Way better than just looking at numbers and code!” Bharath noticed a trend, however, that his peers were going into areas tagged as “cool tech,” such as self driving cars. In fact, his professor even said that agriculture was the industry that technology goes to die. Being a native from India, where the growing economy puts a higher strain on agriculture to provide food security, Bharath was curious as to what his role could be. Finding agriculture universities that needed robotics engineers, he got into a program with a full scholarship. Education involved self-driving tractors, drone sprayers, and other futuristic agriculture practices of tomorrow. A natural progression within the industry led to food safety. From Cushy Office Job to Entrepreneurship “I know you are looking for exciting opportunities, I have these close friends who would like to have breakfast with you,” said a mutual friend of Bharath and his future co-founders Nicholas and Bethany. In what can only be typed as a “get to know each other” meeting, Bharath exercised caution in building the relationship and loyalty with Nicholas and Bethany over the next six to eight months. In that time, they were able to build their business relationship to a point that with confidence and (some) comfort to make the leap to full time entrepreneurship. Nothing Falls Into Your Lap; You have to fight tooth and nail for it. Applying for a large scientific-entrepreneur grant, the team was confident they were well on their way. Bharath quit his full time job, booked a flight home to tell his family of his business venture and to give them a heads up that he may not be able to come see them for a few years. Upon returning back to Canada, Bethany broke the bad news that they...
Factors like climate change, population growth and resource scarcity are driving the agricultural industry to innovate its approach to food production and sustainability. How can AI help overcome the biggest challenges in agriculture? Jodie and Amber examine the solutions with SomaDetect's Bharath Sudarsan, Lauren Rathmell of Lufa Farms Greenhouse, and Intuitive's Hassan Murad.
