In creating a maritime renaissance in the U.S., there is a lot of work, discussion, and money going toward not just buying more ships, but also expanding the industrial base and training skilled tradespeople to make that expansion possible. A cornerstone of this should be training more dedicated Merchant Mariners and employing their skills in a better way.Returning to Midrats is Brent D. Sadler to discuss this and related topics. Along with Hollins Randolph and Peter Lynch, he co-authored a report at Heritage, Time to Bring Back the U.S. Maritime Service to Support America's Maritime Revival and a Wartime Economy, that we will use as a basis for our conversation.Brent is Senior Research Fellow for Naval Warfare and Advanced Technology in the Douglas and Sarah Allison Center for National Security at The Heritage Foundation, and a retired U.S. Navy Captain.SummaryThis episode features Brent Sadler from the Heritage Foundation discussing the urgent need to revitalize the US maritime industry, focusing on the reactivation of the US Maritime Service, improving merchant marine training, and enhancing logistics for national security and wartime readiness.Chapters00:00: Revitalizing Naval Power and Merchant Marine Support02:34: The Importance of Merchant Mariners06:19: Organizational Challenges in Maritime Operations12:17: Credentialing and Training Issues15:06: The TidalWave Project and Sea Lift Requirements20:03: Leadership and Cultural Shifts in Maritime Services25:10: Immediate Solutions for Maritime Needs30:39: Addressing Vulnerabilities in Maritime Logistics

Whatever the truth about UFOs might actually be, the proof is out there far beyond any official disclosure or declassification. The problem with disclosure is that the public is comprised of people who have their own version of what that means; comprised of people who choose to believe or disbelieve, regardless of official narratives. Perhaps that's why the White House has framed it as an issue of personal determination. Either way, the narrative has been rewritten and highly politicized.*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Gregg Phillips of FEMA has made incredible claims regarding teleportation and missing time, including that he was teleported to a Waffle House. Although the White House responded with confusion, the President and his Science and Technology director, Michael Kratsios, have made equally fascinating claims about advanced technology and its ability to “manipulate time and space.” The CIA also recently acknowledged the use of Ghost Murmur, or distant heartbeat monitoring, to find missing soldiers. For all that people assume about the implications here, one thing remains true; the President has implied that the technology he is talking about is more akin to things like sonic weapons, which have been around since at least the 1950s. However, this tech has been reintroduced as new in the same way the UFO subject has been rebranded since 2017. It might not be that the technological advancements are futuristic science fiction, but instead that they are older technologies that have largely been kept from the general public. Nevertheless, technological developments in the United States tend to be centered on weapons of war, social darwinism, and monotechnics. Issues of resources scarcity or pollution are addressed with the same aggressive authoritarianism. The general public thinks along the same lines, and tends to reject that any other way of life is impossible. When random Japanese scientists invent plastic that dissolves without contamination, glass that heals itself, or non-petroleum fuels, it is not merely a threat to corporate America, but a threat to the ego of the programmed population who believe they are citizens of the most advanced and moral country in the world, taught that there are no solutions to the problems sold each day in media. It is likely the Gregg Phillips story is meant to undermine the reality of more advanced forms of technology that do exist. Are talking about science fiction or psychological-fiction?*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Find the full episode on our Substack: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/leonardo-giusti Leonardo is the co-founder and Chief Design Officer of Archetype AI, a company building foundation models trained not on text or images, but on the continuous stream of sensor data flowing from the real world, like factories, power grids, and city intersections. Before that, he spent nearly seven years at Google's Advanced Technology and Projects group, where he led design on Project Soli — a miniature radar chip that taught devices to understand human gesture and presence — and Project Jacquard, which wove interactivity into everyday objects like Levi's jackets and YSL bags. He holds a Ph.D. in human-computer interaction from the University of Florence and spent years as a postdoctoral researcher at MIT's Design Lab. He's also filed more than 30 patents (!). What makes Leonardo's thinking distinctive is his insistence that the metaphors we use to describe AI shape everything — how we build it, how we regulate it, and who it ends up serving. He's skeptical of the dominant vision of AI as an autonomous agent that does things for us, and is pushing toward something different: AI as a tool we think with. In this conversation, we get into his unusual path to design through cognitive science and robotics, what it actually means to treat emerging technology as a design material, why the chatbot is a primitive interface for the physical world, and why he believes augmenting human intelligence might be the most important design challenge of our time. Bio Leonardo Giusti, Ph.D., is an award-winning design and research director. With over 15 years of experience, he excels in transforming R&D projects into innovative hardware, software, and AI products. Prior to Archetype AI, Leonardo was the Head of Design at Google's Advanced Technology and Projects, UX Design and Product Lead at Samsung Design and R&D and interaction design lead at MIT Design Lab. Leonardo was a Post-doctoral Associate at MIT Design Labs and completed his Ph.D, in human-computer interaction at the University of Florence. He has filed more than 30 patents, and published more than 40 scientific papers. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wired, Fast Company and other recognized magazines.

More than 80 secondary school students from across the Midlands have completed an immersive week exploring the future of engineering, advanced manufacturing and technology through the #Dreambig2026 programme, an industry-led initiative led by the ATIM Cluster of advanced manufacturing companies, designed to inspire the next generation of STEM talent. Dreambig is a programme developed by the ATIM (Advanced Technologies in Manufacturing Cluster), a Technological University of Shannon initiative. Through their company visits and hands-on workshops, students visited 18 advanced manufacturing and engineering companies spanning sectors including medical technology, robotics, construction innovation, materials science and precision engineering. Students also engaged directly with engineers and innovators and participated in hands-on robotics and coding workshops at Irish Manufacturing Research in Mullingar and Technological University of the Shannon, Athlone Campus. Students see first-hand how industry is embracing DREAM (Digitalisation, Robotics, Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing, and Materials) and showing young people that you don't need to go far to discover world-class opportunities in the Midlands. The Advanced Technologies in Manufacturing (ATIM) Cluster is an industry-led manufacturing cluster funded by Enterprise Ireland and hosted at the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS). It was established to accelerate innovation, competitiveness, and sustainable growth across Ireland's manufacturing sector. Caitriona Mordan, Cluster Manager of the ATIM Cluster, said the programme is about much more than technology. "At its heart, #Dreambig is about aspiration, helping young people imagine ambitious futures for themselves and showing them that world-class careers in science, engineering and innovation can be built right here in their own communities. Dreambig is a powerful example of what happens when companies, educators and local partners come together through a cluster. By working collectively, we create more opportunities for young people than any organisation could achieve alone. DreamBig gives students the space to connect directly with innovative manufacturing companies, discover their talent, and see a future for themselves in the Midlands." Now in its third year, the programme continues to grow with increasing participation from both schools and industry. Professor Vincent Cunnane, President of Technological University of the Shannon, said: "Dreambig is proof of what happens when a university, industry, and schools come together around a shared purpose: showing young people that modern manufacturing is creative, high-tech, and full of opportunity. Through this partnership with the ATIM Cluster and regional employers, Dreambig is building a connected pathway from the classroom to higher education to high-impact careers right here in the Midlands. That's core to our mission as a technological university, and it's exactly what the national agenda for access, participation, and regional development demands. TUS is proud to be at the centre of that journey, because the earlier we back a young person's dreams, the bigger the impact for them, for their community, and for the region." Across the Midlands, companies are designing products, developing technologies and delivering solutions used around the world, demonstrating that world-class innovation can thrive in regional Ireland. By connecting students directly with these businesses, #Dreambig aims to nurture ambition, confidence and curiosity while showing young people they can pursue cutting-edge careers without leaving their communities.

We talk with a floatplane pilot who flies the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver commercially. In the news, we look at strategies for modernizing the air traffic control system, striking flight attendants and some who wish they could, and a wingsuit accident takes the life of an ICON Aircraft co-founder. Guest John Crawford flies the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver commercially on the Canadian West Coast. He began flying Beavers when he was the Chief Pilot and Operations Manager for a company specializing in floatplane training, where he overhauled the training program. In addition to his full-time flying job, John also has a coaching program that helps pilots get their first flying position without the unnecessary and expensive detour of instructing. He helps student pilots with resumes, job search beyond job ads, interview preparation, and more. John Crawford and the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver. John describes his path to becoming a floatplane pilot, learning to fly, and using taildragger and bush-flying experience. He notes the origin of the Beaver and the challenges of flying a floatplane compared to other aircraft, including obstructions in the water, winds, and docking. John's coaching project started as a proof of concept but has grown to include Canadian, U.S., and international students. We look at his teaching methods, the pattern of floatplane student pilots who do well learning to fly, and how John shows people how to get work. John also provides a valuable perspective on flight instructing in general and how teaching is not for everyone. See John's website, find him on YouTube, and on Instagram. Aviation News The ‘brand new' ATC system might not be as new as you think The National Airspace System today is built on three main software platforms that help transmit flight plan data, collect aircraft position information, and display all of that on the screens of air traffic controllers: the Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS) used by approach and departure facilities, En Route Automation Modernization (ERAM) used by enroute facilities, and the Advanced Technologies & Oceanic Procedures (ATOPs) used by oceanic facilities in California and New York. The FAA said that combining these three protocols into a single common automation platform would be more efficient. That proposal is a pillar of the administration's ATC modernization plan, and it would cost an estimated $31.5 billion. Instead of replacing STARS, ERAM, and ATOPs, FAA chief Bryan Bedford said the agency is exploring a cheaper way to connect the systems that "will look and feel and act exactly the same" as a common platform without actually being one. "There's technology that we can stick in between ERAM and STARS and ATOPs and the user, you know, a new interface. These interfaces actually exist today. We can take that data, we can re-present it across the users of the NAS." US flight attendants are fed up like their Air Canada peers. Here's why they are unlikely to strike Hourly wages for flight attendants can be very low relative to the cost of living. Some can't afford housing in their home base location and must therefore commute from a lower-cost region. Discontent is amplified when FAs are not paid until the cabin door is open. Airline strikes are rare due to the Railway Labor Act of 1926, amended in 1936 to include airlines. For airline workers to strike, Federal mediators must declare an impasse. But even then, the president or Congress can intervene. Air Canada reaches deal with flight attendant union to end strike as operations will slowly restart Ten thousand Air Canada flight attendants went on strike, but that ended with a tentative deal that includes wage increases and pay for boarding passengers. ICON founder dies in wingsuit accident ICON Aircraft co-founder Kirk Hawkins died August 19, 2025, in a wingsuit accident in the Swiss Alps.
