In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Ani Deshpande from Sanford Burnham Prebys about his work on epigenetic regulation and developing small molecules through high throughput screens for AML. Throughout our discussion, we delve into Dr. Despande's journey into the field of biology and science, tracing his evolution from a literature enthusiast in Mumbai to a dedicated cancer researcher. He reflects on his formative experiences during his PhD at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, where she developed murine models for refractory acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We examine these models' contributions to therapeutic discovery and understanding the intricate mechanisms underscoring AML's complexities. Transitioning to his postdoctoral work at Scott Armstrong's lab in Boston, Dr. Despande shares his insights on the importance of epigenetic regulators, such as DOT1L, in leukemias, and how they can serve as strategic therapeutic targets. His ambitious pursuit of translational research is further highlighted through his efforts in developing a conditional knockout mouse model and his collaborative work utilizing CRISPR technology to refine our understanding of epigenetic regulation in cancer pathogenesis. Moreover, we engage in a conversation about the challenges and opportunities that arise when establishing his lab at Sanford Burnham Prebys. Dr. Despande candidly discusses the delicate balance between pursuing topics of genuine interest versus adhering to grant fundability, underlining the tension researchers face in the current scientific landscape. His emphasis on the critical need for innovation within lab settings serves as a motivational call for emerging scientists to venture beyond the established templates that often inhibit groundbreaking discoveries. We conclude our dialogue with an exploration of his recent projects, which involve targeting specific epigenetic modifiers and how his lab's findings can contribute to greater understanding and potential treatments for not only AML but also other pediatric cancers driven by gene fusions. Dr. Despande's insights into the integration of modern technologies, such as CRISPR libraries, exemplify his commitment to pushing the boundaries of cancer research. In addition to discussing his scientific contributions, we touch upon Dr. Despande's foray into podcasting (The Discovery Dialogues), shedding light on his motivation to bridge the communication gap between scientists and the broader public. He articulates his desire to demystify scientific discoveries and promote awareness about the intricate journey of research that lays the groundwork for medical advancements. This multidimensional discussion not only highlights his scientific achievements but also emphasizes the importance of effective science communication in fostering public understanding and appreciation of research. I'm thrilled to announce a new special series for Behavioral Observations! I've partnered with Frontera to bring you a series of podcasts on using AI to support and enhance ABA therapy. To be candid, I've been a bit behind the curve on learning about AI. Sure, I've played around with ChatGPT, but unless you've been living under a rock, you've likely seen many AI solutions that have been brought to bear to Behavior Analytic services. And while I've been wanting to produce content in this area for a while, I've struggled to find an outlet to do so. Until now. In this inaugural series, I interview Amol Deshpande. Amol is an engineer, an entrepreneur, and an autism dad. He also is the founder and CEO of Frontera. What does Frontera do? They develop AI technologies that help BCBAs work efficiently, creating more access for their patients. In doing so, Frontera helps clinics see more patients through improved operations and better productivity, all while reducing turnover and burnout. As you'll hear in this interview, Frontera's technologies accelerate the time to treatment for children and families. And they believe AI, applied correctly at the right time, can create more precise and personal treatment plans that improve children's outcomes. Along the way, you'll learn about Amol's personal commitment to the field, as well as the values of transparency and open-access that Frontera delivers. If you've been skeptical of AI in the ABA space, this podcast is for you. Speaking of transparency, I want to disclose that Frontera will be sponsoring several upcoming BOP episodes. I hope that long time listeners know that I do not undertake these relationships lightly. I've not only spoken with Amol, but also with many other of Frontera's clinicians and staff. To a person, they are committed to making ABA treatment more efficient, effective, and person-centered. If you're interested in learning more about Frontera's technologies, you can explore their easy-to-use Assessment Builder and Diagnosis Builder features at fronterahealth.com. What do these tools do? For starters, they'll help you cut down the time it takes to complete initial client assessments from 8-10 hours to 3-4 hours. This saves time and lets you begin treatment and help your clients sooner rather than later. Your first assessment report is free. And if you use code BOP25 you'll get an additional five assessments for just $100. So head to fronterahealth.com to check it out! Here are some links if you're interested in learning more about Frontera: Business Wire press release announcement of Frontera's funding (see here also). Frontera on Instagram. Frontera on LinkedIn. Maven Ventures General Partner Sara Deshpande has been investing in the consumer tech space for a decade.Over time, the seed-stage venture firm has backed the likes of Zoom, Cruise, Hello Heart, Perplexity and x.AI and has grown to over $200 million in assets under management. Now, with a new $60 million fund — and plans to write six to eight checks of up to $1.5 million each year — Deshpande joined TechCrunch senior reporter Mary Ann Azevedo on Equity to discuss the changes in the consumer landscape, how her firm is doubling down on artificial intelligence and what makes a startup stand out. When it comes to AI, Deshpande thinks that at the seed stage, AI's ability to improve life for consumers “is going to get here much more quickly than people think.” At the same time, she thinks that the peak AI frenzy was about 12 months ago.She also acknowledged that there is naturally going to be some “tumult” around the sector. Perplexity, for example, has been under fire amid plagiarism and web scraping charges.Equity will be back on Friday, so stay tuned!Equity is TechCrunch's flagship podcast, produced by Theresa Loconsolo, and posts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. He discusses the four distinct ways companies handle customer success: reactive support, onboarding, business reviews, and critical care. Pawan emphasizes the importance of a culture of ownership within the customer success team and the need for proactive monitoring of customer health. He also highlights the role of instrumentation and telemetry in detecting issues and setting appropriate thresholds. Pawan concludes by discussing the mindset shift required for effective customer success and the potential for upselling within the customer success role.HERE ARE SOME KEY SECTIONS TO CHECK OUT[00:05:11] Discussion of the challenges faced by Curata and the need for a culture change[00:07:28] The importance of breaking down silos between customer success, sales, and product/engineering teams[00:09:00] Creating collaboration between customer success and sales through pod structures[00:10:36] Outcome-oriented goal setting for customer success teams[00:11:01] Reactive support is like urgent care for customers[00:16:58] Building instrumentation and telemetry into the product is important[00:31:04] Importance of setting up thresholds for customer intervention[00:38:21] Incentivizing customer success team through variable compensation[00:41:42] Customer success is more important than sales for sustaining a business[00:46:30] Client success should be involved in upsells, but may need partnershipADDITIONAL RESOURCESLearn more about Pawan Deshpande: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pawandeshpande/How to Make QBRs Valuable for Your Customers: https://forc.mx/3s1Q3JzBecome a Must-Have Solution for Customers in Any Economy: https://forc.mx/45ZRo1zHIGHLIGHT QUOTES[00:06:36] So what I did is I pulled my desk into the customer success room. And it was really eye-opening when I pulled up a desk in there and I would just work out of there and hear the conversations. What I really heard was a culture of futility. - Pawan Deshpande[00:10:18] And that's like the impetus for critical care. That was one of the key instrumentations we had was detecting if someone hasn't used the product for 14 days, then we kind of swarmed the customer and tried to revive the account. - Pawan Deshpande[00:22:37] And just on the usage, you know, that was particular to us and not all companies are like that. Our product is more like a gym membership. If you don't go to the gym every day, you're probably not going to show up ever again. - Pawan Deshpande

Scripts of Power: Writing, Language Practices, and Cultural History in Western India (Permanent Black, 2023) is a cultural history of western India from a fascinatingly new perspective: language use, writing practices, and relations of power. Its principal focus is the Modi script, a cursive form widely used for writing the Marathi language from the medieval era until quite recently. Examining the changing domains in which Modi flourished and declined over several centuries, Deshpande charts the interconnections of writing, script, language use, and structures of social and regional power in early-modern and modern South Asia. Positioning the career of this cursive form within a cluster of scripts, documents, and language practices, Scripts of Power tracks changing meanings within literate groups, bureaucratic power, and linguistic identity. It presents a critical genealogy of diverse power relations that produced the “regional vernaculars” of the Indian subcontinent – many of which, including Marathi, are official state languages in India today. Deshpande's cultural history reveals multiple fractures in language at its sites of usage over time. It unsettles the notions of language as merely instrumental for communication, or as a primordial basis for identity, and makes us see language as history and practice. In deploying script as its entry point for large reflections on the relationship of politics with language, identity, and power, this book will fascinate and absorb all who are interested in Indian cultural history. Prachi Deshpande is Associate Professor of History at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta. Her research areas are language histories, cultures of documentation and multilinguality, historiography, and memory. She is the author of Creative Pasts: Historical Memory and Identity in Western India, 1700–1960 (Columbia University Press and Permanent Black, 2007), and has taught previously at, among other places, the University of California, Berkeley. She won the Infosys Prize for Humanities in 2020. Niharika Yadav is a postdoctoral fellow in South Asian History at Macalester College. Her research interests connect the histories of political and literary practices with studies of language, caste, and gender in postcolonial India, and on a broader scale, with global histories of democracy and socialism.
