The USS Thresher (SSN-593) was a nuclear-powered submarine that tragically sank on April 10, 1963, during a deep-diving test about 220 miles off the coast of Massachusetts. This disaster resulted in the loss of all 129 crew members and civilians on board, marking the deadliest submarine disaster in U.S. history. The Thresher's sinking highlighted critical flaws in submarine design and emergency response procedures, leading to the implementation of the SUBSAFE program, which significantly improved the safety and reliability of subsequent U.S. Navy submarines. The exact cause of the sinking remains undetermined, but it is believed to involve a combination of mechanical failure and human error under the extreme pressures of deep-sea conditions. Today I’m joined by Desiree Haller, Founder and inventor of SubSafe. SubSafe is what I like to call a simple stroke of genius - and it truly is so genius I just couldn’t believe it didn’t exist already. SubSafe is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the first product designed to protect a sub sandwich in a cooler, and they’ve since expanded into an entire line of products all intended for outdoor use.In this conversation we’re talking through the patent and trademark process, how they sold their beloved boat to fund the business and how they got the word out there on a $0 marketing budget. On April 10, 1963, the USS Thresher, the lead boat of her class of nuclear-powered submarines, went down with all hands 220-miles off the coast of Cape Cod. It was the deadliest submarine disaster in U.S. naval history. The loss of the Thresher was never fully explained and the Navy never released the report on the its sinking. That is, until a retired submarine commander sued the Navy, forcing them to come clean! Now we know why she sank...at least what the Navy thinks because analysis of SOSUS data paints a different (and more plausible) picture of events. Still, one thing we do know is the sinking of the Thresher led to sweeping changes in the submarine force that has ensured the safe operating of these vessels ever since. Plausibly Live! - The Official Podcast of The Dave Bowman Show

On April 10, 1963, the USS Thresher, the lead ship of a new class of atomic powered attack submarines, slipped into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean on a test dive. She would never surface again. Since that day, generations of US Submariners have gone through Submarine School and other forms of advanced training, always with two things in mind: (1) That the Navy learned its lessons from the Thresher and that with the advent of SUBSAFE, a repeat incident was unlikely (2) That nobody except for the 129 souls aboard her actually knows what happened to USS Thresher. That second thing has lead to fifty-seven years worth of conspiracy theories, scuttlebutt, myth and flat-out lies. We have been left with fifty-seven years of mysteries and assumptions that all is well in the post-Thresher loss Submarine Navy. This past week, the Navy released - after being compelled to do so by a lawsuit - the first "tranche" of documents related to the Court of Inquiry that looked into the disaster. Like sailors are prone to do, there was a great deal of kibitzing over the high-minded use of the word "tranche." It's over 300 pages long and full of the typical Navy jargon and language. And it is terrifying to me...
