GUEST SPOTLIGHT This month's episode puts the guest spotlight on CAPT Terry Wichert, USN (Ret.). Having served in the U.S. Navy for 30+ years, he now serves as the executive director for Association for Christian Conferences, Teaching and Services (ACCTS), a sister ministry of OCF. Through personal experiences and some of the 650+ recorded prayers in the Bible, such as those in the books of Nehemiah and Daniel, Terry unpacks the power of persevering prayer. He explains what prayer is and what it isn't, gives some ideas for developing a prayer life, and viewing prayer as a way to have a relationship with our Lord and align our hearts with His. If you would like to share your own story, complete the form on OCF's “Be a Guest” webpage. Alternatively, if you have an idea for a guest or topic we should consider for a future episode of the show, send an email to podcast@ocfusa.org. POINTS TO PONDER As you listen to this conversation with Terry, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor: Terry reminds us that God “loves for us to pray” and “hears our prayer.” How do these reminders affect your view of prayer? To pose the question Terry says he often asks other believers: Are you satisfied with your prayer life? Why or why not? Terry mentions a monthly habit of spending an entire day in prayer before the Lord. What habits might benefit you in your prayer life? When was a time you prayed often about a certain topic but ultimately the Lord orchestrated circumstances that differed from your prayers? How did you respond? How did that experience grow you in your faith in Him?

"I am interested in what facts informed your viewpoint." -- Commander Lippold October 12, 2000 the terrorist bombing of the USS Cole while refueling at port in marked an impotant line in the way the Unites States deals with terrorists. All terrorism is state sponsored. Therefor, we have to respond differently to protect the United States of America. Commander Kirk Lippold was in charge that day. His leadership that day is proven by the fact that the USS Cole is still in service to our Country today. That vessel should have sunk. It was the leadership, training, honor and courage of the Crew that saved the USS Cole. Commander Lippold wrote a fantastic book, Front Burner Al Qaeda's Attack on the USS Cole. And it is an important read for everyone, especially Americans. In a world full of indoctrination, falsehoods, failed leadership and divisiveness; We the People must take the responsibility to inform ourselves, think empathically and take action. I am grateful to share this conversation with a man of Honor who lives his life with dignity and in service to others-- Thank you Commander Lippold.
If you find a message that is consistent over time, through times of ease and times of challenge, and at each challenge in the real world this message is validated, reinforced, and found to be correct — is that a message you need to pay attention to?Since the Houthi joined a second front with the Gazans against Israel by attacking international shipping in the Red Sea and its approaches, the US Navy has led the international response and has been engaged in continuous combat operations facing almost all anti-ship weapons that any navy would expect to face in 2024.The experience in the Red Sea is validating the consistent messages about fleet size and requirements voiced by our guest this week on Midrats — a consistent guest since 2010 — Bryan McGrath, Commander, USN (Ret.).SummaryIn this conversation, Sal, Mark, and Bryan McGrath discuss the ongoing attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea by the Houthis, who are clients of Iran. They also talk about the performance of the US Navy in protecting commercial shipping, the investments made in the Navy, and improvements and challenges in the US Navy. The conversation then shifts to the development of directed energy weapons and the challenges in integrating them into the fleet. They also discuss the importance of multi-mission platforms and the need for single-mission platforms in certain situations. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the presence and deterrence mission of submarines and the need for VLS reload capabilities on DDGs. McGrath highlighted the positive changes in the fleet's material condition and combat systems, as well as the increased investment in training and spare parts. However, he also expressed concerns about the extended deployments and the strain it puts on ships and crews. McGrath emphasized the need for a larger Navy, particularly in terms of aircraft carriers, to meet the demands of global operations. He also discussed the challenges in the shipbuilding industry and the importance of stability and additional shipyards.Sound Bites"It is time to bring systems to see that allow us to economically engage civilizations that can out-produce us""There's been three straight budgets now that have funded spare parts significantly higher than I have seen them since I was in command."Chapters00:00: Introduction02:04: Ongoing Attacks on International Shipping in the Red Sea04:07: Performance of the Fleet in the Red Sea07:10: The Potential of Directed Energy Weapons09:40: Challenges in Integrating New Technology12:14: The Need for More VLS Tubes and Single-Mission Platforms16:13: The Role of Submarines in Naval Power21:53: Deterrence in the South China Sea26:43: Presence and Deterrence with the USS Georgia30:20: Rearming DDGs and the Importance of VLS33:36: Improvements in Shipyards and Material Conditions41:18: The Need for More Aircraft Carriers48:00: The Impact of Extended Deployments54:35: The Importance of Spare Parts58:58: Challenges of the Constellation Class01:00:09: The Importance of Stability and Additional ShipyardsBryan is the founding Managing Director of The FerryBridge Group LLC (FBG), a niche consultancy specializing in naval and national security issues including national and military strategy, strategic planning, executive communications, strategic communications, and emerging technologies. Last week you heard from Bonnie Carroll about her work with host Paul Rieckhoff to create the American Veterans for Ukraine organization. Immediately after recording that show, in advance of Memorial Day, at a historic event at Ukraine House in Washington, D.C., five leading voices from the American veterans community formally announced the formation of a groundbreaking new veterans organization focused on supporting victory in Ukraine. American Veterans for Ukraine, is a groundbreaking new effort from our host, Paul Rieckhoff, and past guests of the show Bonnie Carroll, Matt Gallagher, Adrian Bonenberger and Nolan Peterson. AVU is an American, non-partisan, non-profit organization with a clear mission: connecting, uniting and empowering American veterans to support victory for Ukraine. AVU's two lines of effort to ensure that mission is accomplished are: 1. Driving public support for Ukraine. 2. Protecting continued US government funding for the fight. Along with the AVU Founders, attendees heard from Hope for Ukraine CEO, Yuriy Boyechko, Co-Founder of TAPS Ukraine and reserve Lieutenant in the Ukrainian military, Yuliya Dmytrova, as well as Katherine Semenyuk, a Ukrainian American military chaplain who on the first day of the Russian invasion, gave birth to her fifth child in a bunker, embodying the spirit of survival and determination. A video statement was also presented from Admiral James Stavridis, USN (Ret) and 16th Supreme Allied Commander of NATO. AVU's five Co-Founders are known worldwide for their commitment to America, to the veterans community, and to issues of national security, global security, and peace. They represent a deep and diverse scope of backgrounds and are combining efforts to meet this critical moment in American and global history. It was an inspiring event and we want you to join us. Days before AVU launched another great organization hosted a gala as IAVA Salutes had another great event in support of their noble cause. As we reflect on Memorial Day, please keep organizations like IAVA and TAPS in mind. They are the helpers. And sometimes the helpers need a little help. And one more thing to keep in mind as you navigate the chaos as we pay tribute to the great Bill Walton, a true American hero who did it his own way. A true icon and a great Independent American.
