Thresher sharks are some of the “snappiest” fish in the oceans. They have an oversized tail fin that looks like a scythe—and is almost as deadly. A shark “snaps” the fin like someone snapping a towel in a locker room, stunning its prey. And a recent study worked out some of the details on how the shark does it.Threshers are found around the world. Most stay fairly close to shore, and not very deep. Adults can grow to about 20 feet long. What really sets them apart is that snapping motion. A shark first winds up a bit like a baseball pitcher. It twists its body in one direction, its tail in the opposite direction. The tail, which is almost as long as the body, is held high. The shark then uncoils, snapping the tail around in a fast, powerful motion. It then takes a minute to relax before grabbing its prey.Researchers recently studied the spines of 10 thresher sharks that had stranded on shore or been caught by anglers. The sharks ranged from an embryo to an adult 13 feet long. The scientists did CAT scans on the sharks, revealing the structure of the shark spines and vertebrae. The work showed that the vertebrae in the body are longer and thicker than those close to the tail—a trait that developed as the sharks got older. The interiors of the two types of vertebrae were different as well. The researchers said the differences may make a thresher more flexible while adding strength to its tail—allowing the sharks to “snap up” their dinner.
The USS Thresher (SSN-593) was a nuclear-powered submarine that tragically sank on April 10, 1963, during a deep-diving test about 220 miles off the coast of Massachusetts. This disaster resulted in the loss of all 129 crew members and civilians on board, marking the deadliest submarine disaster in U.S. history. The Thresher's sinking highlighted critical flaws in submarine design and emergency response procedures, leading to the implementation of the SUBSAFE program, which significantly improved the safety and reliability of subsequent U.S. Navy submarines. The exact cause of the sinking remains undetermined, but it is believed to involve a combination of mechanical failure and human error under the extreme pressures of deep-sea conditions.
Send us a Text Message.I caught up with Howard Thresher at the tackle shop he runs in Crediton, Devon.I've known him quite a few years now and I really wanted listeners to hear the story of a river that was completely fished out until he was lucky enough to buy the fishing rights and nurse it back to health. It now holds some pretty special fish.We also get an intimate insight into how he runs a tackle shop, known locally as the sweet shop, a little differently from the norm. You'll learn how he stumbled into the industry almost by accident but used his skills in other areas to make the business a success.I really enjoyed talking with Howard and hope you'll enjoy our conversation just as much.
Welcome to episode 81! In this episode, Laurel covers the story of the RMS Titanic's sinking and how it remained undiscovered on the ocean floor for the next 73 years until a top secret Cold War mission led to its (almost accidental) discovery in 1985. Thresher sharks are known for their unusual hunting strategy. They use their long tail like a whip, striking it so fast that it creates a shockwave capable of stunning multiple fish at once! But how does their anatomy support such an extreme movement? In today's episode we find out! We talk with Jamie Knaub, who researches the biomechanics and vertebral anatomy in large, swimming animals - including whales and sharks. In this episode we explore Jamie's research, including her most recent work studying the vertebrae of the thresher shark to understand how they are able to carry out that iconic tail whip. This episode has it all: the Olympians of the shark world, surprise humpbacks, sharks with anxiety, digital dissections and of course some deliciously nerdy science. SPECIAL THANKS TO MATT MIRANDA AND JEREMY KOFSKY FOR EDITING AND SHOW NOTES SUPPORTIn this episode of Moments in Leadership, retired Vice Admiral William (Bill) Merz and host David B. Armstrong discuss how life can take strange turns to making capable leaders, oftentimes through hard times and rough seas. VADM Merz has seen the depths of the ocean and the heights of a superiorly led organization. His insights are valuable to all those who don't want to be crushed under the everlasting burdens of leadership and ownership. Learning the ‘personality' of an organization is similar to understanding the ‘personality' of a submarine, especially one as temperamental as the Thresher class submarine VADM Merz started on. Organizations that place a priority on the importance of the mission, expect professionalism in all duties, and have tangible results all work to produce leaders that all pull in the same direction. Setting a standard, and holding people to that standard, provides a way for people to see their potential and sets the conditions for them to operate at their best. The standards of the submarine fleet are set by the accountability foisted upon the submarine's commanding officer. They are absolutely responsible and accountable for everything on the submarine, to include the safe and effective use of the nuclear powerplant. This stringent adherence to accountability, and the training/certification elements of a submarine officer's career has created the paradigm wherein, as VADM Merz states, ‘there will never be a second nuclear issue in the Navy, because after the first, the whole program will be shut down'. To enforce accountability, and a learning culture, VADM Merz states one needs to celebrate mistakes, while this seems counterintuitive, the ability to distill failures to the procedural reason they occurred ultimately reinforces the accountability and ownership of the group. Conversely, good things happening by accident also needs to be investigated as procedures should result in predictable outcomes that can be repeatable. A command climate that can foster this ‘celebration of mistakes' is one that empowers all within and displays consistency. A leader who yells all the time can be fine, as long as their yelling is consistent in its application. When the yelling has no purpose other than to get frustrations out, then the command climate will falter. A good command climate is also one in which junior leaders feel respected enough to stand up to senior leadership and tell them when things are not working in proper order. VADM Merz gives examples throughout his career of the good and bad coming out of these situations, including a time or two when he himself was the ‘bad' boss. The wanting to be with the ‘best' can lead people away from their best instincts in a poor command influence. VADM Merz provides stories of working operations with Navy SEALs and how arguments between SEALs and submariners about tactics and rigging would be immediately smashed by senior SEALs, who would tell these highly proficient warriors they need to understand submarines are not their specialty and to let those who are experts in their areas execute the best way to support the mission. The best person is always the best person, you need the right person to perform the task. Once the experts are identified in an area, an appropriate command climate is fostered, and mistakes can be celebrated, the didactic nature in which the submarine community approaches problems can be applied to any other number of problem sets. VADM Merz provides the example of his time as the 7th Fleet Commander having the lowest suicide rate in decades and being able to uncover unconscious bias within the ranks. VADM Merz's concludes with the importance of gaining the trust of subordinates and using the tools available to a commander, namely mast as a tool to correct and provide guidance to those who are accountable for carrying out the national-level high risk missions of the Submarine Service. For those who are looking for insights into the Silent Service or just want a more effective organization, this is a great conversation to be apart of. If he feels he owns his job and acts accordingly, he need not worry about his next job.Responsibility – Along with ownership comes the need for acceptance of full responsibility for the work. Shared responsibility means that no one is responsible. Unless one person who is truly responsible can be identified when something goes wrong, then no one has really been responsible.Attention to Detail – A tendency among managers, particularly as they move to higher positions, is to think they no longer need to be concerned with details. If the boss is not concerned about details, his subordinates also will not consider them important.Priorities – If you are to manage your job, you must set priorities. Too many people let the job set the priorities. You must apply self-discipline to ensure your energy is applied where it is most needed.Know What is Going On – You must establish simple and direct means to find out what is going on in detail in the area of your responsibility. I require regular, periodic reports directly to me from the personnel throughout my program.Hard Work – For this, there is no substitute. A manager who does not work hard or devote extra effort cannot expect his people to do so. You must set the example. Hard work compensates for many shortcomings. You may not be the smartest or most knowledgeable person, but if you dedicate yourself to the job and put in the required effort, your people will follow your lead.Checking Up – An essential element of carrying out my work is the need to have it checked by an independent source. Even the most dedicated individual make mistakes.Facing the Facts – Another principle for managing a successful program is to resist the natural human inclination to hope things will work out, despite evidence or doubt to the contrary. It is not easy to admit that what you thought was correct did not turn out that way. If conditions require it, one must face the facts and brutally make needed changes despite considerable cost and schedule delays. The man in charge must personally set the example in this area.” Moments in Leadership - Ron Boxall, VADM, US Navy (themiloffice.com) Admiral James A. The Seafaring Life Of ‘Modern-Day Captain Nemo,' Robert Ballard In 1985, oceanographer Robert Ballard was sent on a secret deep-sea search operative with a very specific mission: to seek two sunken nuclear submarines. Ballard, who by then had explored the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and helped design deep-sea research submersibles, was assigned by the U.S. Navy to investigate and take images of the U.S.S. Thresher and U.S.S. Scorpion. But locating these two wreckages wouldn't bring him to fame—instead, it was another watery grave he would find along the way. After he located the two subs, Ballard had time left in the mission to satiate a hunt he had begun nearly a decade prior: He discovered the R.M.S. Titanic, which sank into the North Atlantic 110 years ago. While the Titanic might be his most publicized finding, the famed marine archaeologist has adventured beneath the waves on more than 150 expeditions that have broadened our understanding of the oceans and the planet. “We think there's probably more history in the deep sea than all of the museums of the world combined—and we're only now opening those doors to those museums,” he says. Ballard's recorded the activity of hydrothermal vents, the ecology of hot springs on the ocean floor, and the diversity of incredible marine creatures. In excerpts from two conversations in the Science Friday archives (originally recorded in 2000 and 2009), Ballard describes the 1985 expedition in which he discovered the wreck of the Titanic. He also discusses the value of combining the efforts of oceanographers, engineers, and social scientists to study the world's deep oceans. Plus, Ballard elaborates on his belief that some undersea finds should be left preserved and protected, and his work in expanding access to ocean research via telepresence and computer links. Meet The Drag Artists Who Are Making Science More Accessible Each generation has had science communicators who brought a sometimes stuffy, siloed subject into homes, inspiring minds young and old. Scientists like Don Herbert, Carl Sagan, and Bill Nye are classic examples. But our modern age of social media has brought more diverse communicators into the forefront of science communication, including the wild, wonderful world of STEM drag stars. These are queer folk who mix the flashy fashions of the drag world with science education. Some, like Kyne, use TikTok as a medium to teach concepts like math. Others, like Pattie Gonia, use drag to attract more people to the great outdoors. The accessibility of the internet has made these personalities available to a wide audience. Kyne and Pattie Gonia join Ira to talk about the magic drag can bring to science education, and why they think the future of SciComm looks more diverse than the past. This segment originally aired on February 11, 2022. Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

On April 10, 1963, the USS Thresher, the lead boat of her class of nuclear-powered submarines, went down with all hands 220-miles off the coast of Cape Cod. It was the deadliest submarine disaster in U.S. naval history. The loss of the Thresher was never fully explained and the Navy never released the report on the its sinking. That is, until a retired submarine commander sued the Navy, forcing them to come clean! Now we know why she sank...at least what the Navy thinks because analysis of SOSUS data paints a different (and more plausible) picture of events. Still, one thing we do know is the sinking of the Thresher led to sweeping changes in the submarine force that has ensured the safe operating of these vessels ever since. Do you like trying different things? Or do you prefer smoking funny things? He's a conservative flip flopper, a confederate flag loving yankee, a Detroit-repping white rapper who grew up on a princely estate in the 'burbs. In 2007 he recorded an album called Rock N Roll Jesus, with which he purported to be resurrecting the long dormant and nearly forgotten genre of rock. What it is is a bunch of songs where he says racist garbage in the only two notes he can manage while his band does a half hearted Bob Seger impression. It goes on for 57 minutes. Former Army helicopter pilot and current provider executive John Thresher talks with Don Seamons about how patients churn through the healthcare system to get relief from pain. The desire to relieve pain leads to a lot of waste in the $213 billion per year musculoskeletal industry. To lower costs, we need to focus on efficiency, quality, outcomes and care coordination to drive down unnecessary care, duplicative care, and low/no-value care.
