This podcast is called the High Performance Human podcast for a reason. It gives me the opportunity to showcase individuals who excel in their chosen sport, but also in many other areas of their life, while still focussing on basics such as sleep and nutrition. Next time you take a flight, think about what you would like to know about your pilot - skills at their job (obviously) but also that they prioritise health and fitness, turn up each day having slept well and eaten the right foods to help them concentrate throughout the full duration of your flight. Today's guest, Rick Peters, is an elite swimmer, airline pilot, and high performance human. He was introduced to me by long time client Toby Baxendale when he and Rick met at the Barbados Open Water swim festival, last November. Rick finished 7th overall in the 5k swim (non wetsuit) in a very impressive time of 1hr 13 (an average pace of 1:28/100m), made even more impressive by the fact that Rick is 60 years old. Rick still regularly captains long haul flights for Air Canada, and in today's conversation we talk about his daily fitness routine, his love for swimming, and how he stays so fit and healthy. Then we add in the complications of air travel, the impact of time zone changes, and some of the strategies Rick uses to mitigate these. Needless to say, I would be very confident to have Rick Peters as the Captain on my next flight! Some other topics we discuss include: Earthing - to help the body rebalance after crossing time zones Drinking hydrogen water to limit the impact of flying at altitude Finding time to workout when travelling The microbiome and how keeping your gut healthy has a major impact on brain health, sleep and general fitness Rick doesn't use social media but if you have any questions for him, I'm sure he wouldn't mind me forwarding them on. He did recommend some resources and books. Books “YOUNGER NEXT YEAR” (Live strong, fit, sexy and smart – until you're 80 and beyond) by Chris Crowley & Henry Lodge. The Psychology of Winning” (Ten qualities of a total winner) by Dr. Denis Waitley. Video Light as Medicine by Dr. Roger Seheult MD of MedCram who gives a very detailed description of how mitochondria produce ATP and what infrared light can do to optimize your health and immunity. Research Papers on Gut MicroBiome How gut bacteria balance enhanced exercise performance “Associations between gut microbiota and sleep: a two-sample, bidirectional Mendelian randomization Study”, by J. Wu et al “Gut microbiome diversity is associated with sleep physiology in humans”, by R. Smith et al., in PLoS One, October 2019, PMID 31589627. “Exercise and the Gut Microbiome: A review of the Evidence, Potential Mechanisms, and Implications for Human Health” To contact Beth regarding Life Coaching, please email her at Info@BethanyWardLifeCoaching.uk. On this week’s podcast, we set another record with our oldest guest ever. Colin Rose, the author of 10 published books including Health Defence and Delay Ageing, talks the talk and walks the walk. If you look at the accompanying video you would never believe that Colin is 80 years old, and listening to him you wouldn’t think that either. I met Colin many years ago when I was introduced to his UniVite supplements business and he is linked with two of my previous guests, Toby Baxendale and Dr. Paul Clayton. I read 'Delay Ageing’ prior to chatting with Colin and much of the advice and guidance dispensed by Colin in the book covers much of the information that I have covered with other guests in the last 12 months. It’s reassuring to find that we are on the same path. If, like me, you have a goal of sliding up to the graveside screaming, “yea ha, what a ride!” then you’ll love this conversation as we give you all of the knowledge you need to make that happen. I hope you enjoy the conversation as we chat about: The importance of a healthy microbiome Why you should choose foods with different colours Another vote for balance and diversity in your diet Genetics vs Epigenetics (nature vs nurture) The Japanese practice of 'Hara hachi Bu’ or “Stop eating when you are 80% full’ The real reason why the Mediterranean diet works Intermittent fasting, autophagy, and why you need to rid the body of zombie cells How to be the master of physical and biological ageing Strength training, aerobic exercise, and their contributions to delayed ageing You can follow Colin on his various social media channels Wikitia page Facebook UniVite HealthCare Accelerated learning Systems Uni-Vite healthcare YouTube site The following list includes podcasts with topics related to today’s conversation Dr Paul Clayton - How to live as healthy as possible for as long as possible Toby Baxendale - High Performance Human Bella Lindemann - Why the gut is the second brain To purchase a copy of Colin’s latest book, 'Delay Ageing’ please go HERE Valter Longo - Longevity Diet Dirty Dozen - The ‘dirtiest' fruit and veg in the UK with regards to pesticide levels The Hallmarks of Ageing research paper To find out more about Simon’s SWAT programme, please click HERE Visit Simon's website for more information about his coaching programmes Links to all of Simon's social media channels can be found here For any questions please email Beth@TheTriathlonCoach.com
In today’s podcast I’m back with another of my High Performance Human guests. This week it’s Toby Baxendale, who I have been coaching for almost 15 years. We met by chance as Toby came to a bike exhibition in central London to purchase a product which I was selling, and shortly after he asked me to coach him towards his triathlon goals. We have become good friends since then. During that time Toby has built and sold a large fish distribution business, retained a strong marriage with his wife Katherine, reared 3 healthy children, developed an investment business helping companies in the fish business around the world, and managed to train on average 8-10 hours/week, every week. Toby truly epitomises a high performance human but as you will hear during our conversation, there have been times when life did get a bit out of balance. Listen in as we chat about: Dogged determination and why you don’t need to be the best to succeed, just consistent Making a success of your life when you are labelled ‘Educationally Sub Normal' The law of comparative advantage Paul Clayton - Health Defence Book of Proverbs and how it’s so relevant to life during the COVID19 outbreak Purchasing a Sloane Square nightclub at 18 years old The power of listening Learning to delegate, and how that led to a thirtyfold increase in turnover How the book “Primal Endurance” had a profound effect on Toby’s life COVID19 exit plans and positioning for success The truth behind the phrase “behind every successful man there is an even better woman" Find out more about Toby Baxendale by visiting his website HERE Dr Paul Clayton "The man is the head, but the woman is the neck", scene from My Big Fat Greek Wedding To find out more about Simon’s SWAT programme, please click HERE To comment on this podcast, please visit Simon's Facebook page HERE Visit Simon's website for more information about his coaching programmes For any questions please email Beth@TheTriathlonCoach.com

It has taken four days shy of a year, but Britain’s democratic decision to leave the European Union has just become very real. As formal Brexit negotiations commence and Britain’s Brexit minister David Davis eyeballs the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier across a big table in Brussels, Tim is joined by businessman Toby Baxendale to look at the key tenets of the talks. They discuss Theresa May’s ‘increased’ mandate for Brexit, the potential cost of the divorce, the plea from the UK business community to focus on the economy and the differing positions Britain might take. A popular returning guest from Ep.71, Toby is a pro Leave, pro free market advocate and you can find out more about his work at tobybaxendale.com #Podcast #Brexit #BrexitPodcast #Referendum #EUReferendum #VoteLeave #VoteRemain #VoteIn #EU #UK #TimHeming #JenniferHahn #News #Politics #negotiations #michaelbarnier #daviddavis
“June 24th was one of the greatest days of my life,” Toby Baxendale says, referring to the vote for Britain to leave the European Union in 2016. Perhaps not an unusual statement given 52 per cent of Brits agreed with his decision. But given Tony invests in eight businesses and founded and then sold the UK’s largest fresh fish processor and distributor, Direct Seafoods, it bucks much of the anti-Brexit free-trade thinking. Toby joined Tim and Jen to explain why he believes Britain’s future and trade agreements – free from the bureaucracy of Brussels - will be brighter post-Brexit. Toby is also a trustee of the Legatum Institute, a charity and think tank that focuses on understanding, the journey from poverty to prosperity. Toby Baxendale, an entrepreneur in the UK, comes back to the show, this time to explain that the media has created a false impression about the meaning of Brexit. The Leave campaign was run by libertarians, he says, not protectionists, but the latter have more effectively spun the media machine.
