What are the key factors driving the rise of populism in response to mass migration and other cultural and political issues in the UK and across Western democracies? Heritage Foundation President Dr. Kevin Roberts sits down with Dr. Matt Goodwin, a leading voice in the fight against the political and cultural upheavals threatening the very foundation of the UK and US. Dr. Goodwin, Senior Advisor at the Legatum Institute and Honorary Professor of Politics at the University of Kent, lays out the stark realities facing conservatives today—on both sides of the Atlantic. With the rise of populism, the betrayal of conservative values by the political elite, and the relentless advance of woke ideology, Dr. Roberts and Dr. Goodwin confront the critical challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. They explore how conservatives must forge a bold, united front to defend our principles and restore power to the working class. About Dr. Matt Goodwin: Matt Goodwin is a professor of political science, a writer, pollster, and political advisor to corporations and other bodies. He works where the worlds of research, politics, and policy collide —talking with politicians, journalists, and academics while crunching his own data and running his own opinion polls and focus groups. Matt has advised countless governments, companies, and leaders around the globe, including one president, three Prime Ministers, leaders of the opposition, dozens of politicians, and more than a few CEOs from the world's largest companies. He's the author of multiple award-winning, bestselling books including the Sunday Times bestseller Values, Voice, and Virtue, which explains how and why the new elite lost touch, and the Sunday Times bestseller National Populism: The Revolt Against Liberal Democracy, which has been translated into multiple languages. He's also the author of the definitive book on the Brexit vote, Brexit: Why Britain Voted to Leave the European Union, and the Political Book of the Year, Revolt on the Right, which successfully forecast the rise of populism and Brexit in Britain. Matt served for a decade as Associate and Senior Fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House, a Senior Fellow at the Legatum Institute, an official advisor to the UK Education Committee, a Senior Fellow at Policy Exchange, and as one of the UK government's Social Mobility Commissioners He has also been seconded to a government department, working alongside national policy makers.

Train your brain's emotional intelligence with metacognition | Arthur Brooks

You've heard of cognition. Now, here's metacognition: the act of thinking about thinking. Arthur Brooks, author and public speaker, explains how metacognition helps us reflect on our emotional life, allowing our prefrontal cortex to evaluate signals from the limbic system. For instance, telling children to "use their words" instead of screaming encourages them to engage their prefrontal cortex. The same applies to adults: interrogate your emotions before reacting, and you might just become a more emotionally healthy person. According to Brooks, this is a skill that can be developed over time, so if you're new to the idea of consciously regulating your own emotions, it's not too late. He stresses that negative emotions - though unenjoyable - are entirely normal and are even representative of a healthy brain. What matters is how we engage with these negative emotions and what lessons we take away from the experiences they give us. Metacognition is a skill that requires patience and self-kindness. With enough practice and effort, we all can learn to master this ability and enhance our own happiness, as well as the happiness of those around us. ----------------------------------------------------------- About Arthur Brooks: Arthur C. Brooks is a professor at both the Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School, where he teaches public and nonprofit leadership and management practice. Before joining Harvard in July 2019, he spent ten years as the president of the American Enterprise Institute, a well-known public policy think tank in Washington, DC. Brooks has written 11 books, including the bestsellers "Love Your Enemies" (2019), "The Conservative Heart" (2015), and "The Road to Freedom" (2012). He writes a column for The Atlantic, hosts the podcast "The Art of Happiness with Arthur Brooks," and is featured in the 2019 documentary "The Pursuit." Why your Epicurean approach will never make you truly happy | Arthur Brooks

Big Think

Arthur Brooks, author and Harvard professor, has some startling news: In order to be happy, we also need to be unhappy, at least a little bit. To explain this theory, Brooks reflects on the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus, who proposed that the key to happiness is to simply suffer less, not by seeking constant pleasure but by eliminating sources of discomfort. This idea, although intuitive, has significant implications. Avoiding the relationships and activities that cause friction can indeed make us happier. However, Brooks warns against the modern trend of overprotecting ourselves and our children from any form of suffering or conflict. In the long run, these types of “protection” could actually be more harmful than beneficial. Suffering is a natural part of life that teaches resilience and helps us especially appreciate the good moments we experience. As Carl Jung noted, we need contrast in our lives to truly experience joy. -------------------------------------------------------------- About Arthur Brooks: Arthur C. Within less than two weeks, the world has watched as former President Donald Trump was almost assassinated, President Joe Biden announced he is stepping out of the race, and Vice President Kamala Harris has emerged as the leading choice for the Democratic Party nominee. From within the U.S., it feels like a tumultuous time in American politics. But how is the world, and specifically the U.K., viewing “the land of the free and home of the brave” right now? The U.K. is “very concerned” by recent events in America, Matthew Goodwin, a professor of politics and international relations at the University of Kent and a senior fellow at the Legatum Institute, says. “The attempted assassination of Donald Trump was seen as a symbol of a country that is very divided and polarized,” according to Goodwin. “There's an awareness that the rhetoric has become extreme, not just, around the former president, but also on the left of American politics.” Goodwin joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss European's views of America's fraught election cycle, and to discuss the results of the U.K. recent election that resulted in the worst-ever election defeat for Britain's Conservative Party. How does one become truly happy? Arthur Brooks, author and Harvard professor, explains. Throughout his career, Brooks has pinpointed the essence of real happiness. His key insight? Happiness is not just a feeling, it's a state of mind. In this interview, Brooks shares three primary elements of well-being, and explains how each one – enjoyment, satisfaction, and meaning – contributes to your own happiness factor. Enjoyment, he explains, involves more than mere pleasure—it's about shared experiences and lasting memories. Satisfaction arises from overcoming challenges, and meaning comes from understanding life's coherence, significance, and purpose. Brooks further breaks down the pursuits that genuinely contribute to happiness: faith, family, friendship, and meaningful work. He stresses that happiness is not a final destination but a continuous direction. By focusing on these core aspects, we can build a fulfilling and happier life. She is expertly placed to give us a presentation on all aspects of the new economic relationship between the UK and Australia. About Catherine McBride Catherine was awarded an OBE for services to Economic Commentary and Trade Policy and is recognised as an expert in her field, specialising in economic and regulatory topics, global trade, farming standards, the environment, banking and macroeconomics. She is a fellow of the Centre for Brexit Policy, a researcher for the Growth Commission and has written papers on UK post-Brexit trade for Global Britain and for the IEA. She writes regularly for the website Briefings for Britain and for The Telegraph. Catherine moved to the UK to work for an Australian Stockbroker in 1987, she still lives in London, and has worked for UK and American multinational banks trading the European and US derivative markets, including the agricultural commodities markets. She campaigned for Brexit in 2016 as she believed that the EU's one-size-fits-all policies fitted no country in the EU very well but they really didn't fit the UK which was always an outlier in the EU. After the UK-EU referendum, Catherine joined a City think tank reviewing EU financial regulations that could be changed now the UK had left the EU's control. She later joined the Legatum Institute and then the Institute of Economic Affairs, also writing about financial regulation. But as the debate about new free trade agreements heated up in the UK, she found herself as a lone voice rebutting the misinformation being pushed out by the UK's National Farmers Union about Australian farms, food and farming standards. This brought her to the attention of the Department for International Trade, which appointed her to the Trade and Agriculture Commission in 2021. Recording of a debate at the Battle of Ideas festival 2023 on Sunday 29 October at Church House, London. ORIGINAL INTRODUCTION Too often, talking about race feels fraught with difficulty, leaving us walking on eggshells to avoid offence. However, this can mean that important questions and queries go unanswered, and grievances can fester. Luckily, more and more authors are taking up the challenge – and this session features three of them in conversation. Rakib Ehsan's Beyond Grievance: What the Left Gets Wrong About Ethnic Minorities argues that the left too often buys into toxic, imported ideologies around identity politics. Left-wingers are also complacent, he argues, assuming they can depend upon a traditional support base among ethnic minorities. As a result, they fail to engage with the small-c conservative values around family, faith and flag that many of these communities support. Yet these values could create a fairer multi-ethnic society based upon equal opportunity, social cohesion and a national sense of belonging. Remi Adekoya's book It's Not About Whiteness, It's About Wealth notes that Western conversations on race and racism often revolve around the holy trinity of the race debate: colonialism, the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the ideology of white supremacism. However, Adekoya argues that it is socioeconomic realities which play the leading role in sustaining racial hierarchies in everyday life. He looks at the global big picture, regularly overlooked in the current debate. Finally, in Against Decolonisation: Campus Culture Wars and the Decline of the West, Doug Stokes challenges the theories and arguments deployed by ‘decolonisers' in a university system now characterised by garbled leadership and illiberal groupthink. More broadly, Stokes examines the threat posed by Critical Theory to wider society and critiques the desire to question the West's sense of itself, deconstruct its narratives and overthrow its institutional order. SPEAKERS Dr Remi Adekoya lecturer of politics, University of York; author It's Not About Whiteness, It's About Wealth and Biracial Britain Dr Rakib Ehsan author, Beyond Grievance: what the Left gets wrong about ethnic minorities Professor Doug Stokes professor in international security and director of the Strategy and Security Institute, University of Exeter; senior adviser, Legatum Institute; author, The Geopolitics of the Culture Wars CHAIR Dr Jim Butcher lecturer; researcher; co-author, Volunteer Tourism: the lifestyle politics of international development

In this interview, John speaks with British political scientist, Matthew Goodwin. Matthew recounts the emergence of a new class of elites and the ways in which they have diverged from the more traditional British ruling class, and more importantly, from the general public. They are distinguished by their elite education, lack of real-world experience, and a tendency to refuse engagement with the cultural issues that matter to the everyman. This phenomenon, Goodwin argues, is global and causing both sides of political establishment to drift further from their constituents. Matt Goodwin is an academic, bestselling author, pollster, and speaker known for his research on: politics, populism, elections, voting, public opinion, Brexit, Europe, academic freedom and more. How Ronald Reagan ended the Cold War

Did U.S. President Ronald Reagan end the Cold War? Or did the war end because Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev abandoned it? William Inboden argues forcefully for the former interpretation in his new book, The Peacemaker: Ronald Reagan, the Cold War, and the World on the Brink. Reagan's strategy in dealing with the Soviet Union and ending the Cold War involved reviving the U.S. economy, restoring American self-confidence, rebuilding American military might, and working closely with our democratic allies. He then pressured the Soviet Union into an economically unsustainable arms race, engaged in proxy battles with them around the globe, and waged a successful propaganda war that pitted the political, religious, and economic liberties of the “free world” against the bankruptcy and tyranny of the “evil empire.” But when liberalizing Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev came to power in the USSR in 1985, Reagan saw sooner than most of his advisors that here was a reformer with whom he could work to bring peace.  William Inboden is the Executive Director and William Powers Jr. Chair of the Clements Center for National Security at the University of Texas at Austin. He previously held senior positions with the State Department and in the National Security Council under President George W. Bush. In this podcast, Inboden describes his work on Capitol Hill, his graduate study that focused on both U.S. diplomatic history and American religious history, his service in the Bush White House as well as with the Legatum Institute in London, and his return to academia. He details the factors that inspired him to write The Peacemaker, the declassification of Reagan-era documents that enabled him to arrive at new historical insights into the Reagan presidency, and his own change in perspective that led him from being intensely critical of Reagan (particularly with regard to his support of authoritarian anti-communist regimes and insurgencies in Central and South America) to holding a more favorable assessment of his legacy.  Inboden also discusses how former Republican president Dwight Eisenhower exerted a more significant influence on Reagan than most historians have recognized, how Reagan's conception of the Cold War differed profoundly from that shared by his predecessors, how the Strategic Defense Initiative (aka “Star Wars”) was at the heart of his strategic vision of a world without nuclear weapons, and why he is confident that the Reaganite tradition in the Republican Party can be revived. Inboden also argues for the value and relevance of history for policymakers, as well as why he believes that public universities need to uphold their end of the implicit social contract they have long maintained with American society.

The early 1980s was a time of great political uncertainty. With the threat of nuclear destruction seemingly imminent, the emergence of global terrorism, and the rise of proxy conflicts in Africa, Latin America, and Asia, Ronald Reagan entered the White House with many global security problems on his hands, and very few clear solutions. He wasn't alone, though. Throughout the end of the Cold War, Reagan was supported by a national security team with competing ideals to solve these looming crises. Recently declassified documents and interviews with many of these senior Reagan administration officials have revealed a new storyline toward the peaceful conclusion of the Cold War and the remaking of the world order. Guiding us through today's conversation is Dr. William Inboden. William Inboden is a historian of national security and professor at the UT Austin LBJ School of Public Affairs. Prior to joining the UT faculty, he has served as senior director for strategic planning on the National Security Council, worked on the State Department's Policy Planning Staff and served as a congressional staff member. He also served as head of the London-based Legatum Institute, and as a Civitas Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. Dr. Inboden's commentary has been featured in op-eds in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, and more. As a professor, he has been awarded the “Texas 10” Award by the Texas Exes Alumni Association, selected as “Lecturer of the Year” at the LBJ School, and his classes Presidential Decision-making in National Security and Ethics and International Affairs have been voted as "Best Class in the LBJ School" and “Class Most Likely to Challenge Your Assumptions.”He is the author of The Peacemaker: Ronald Reagan, the Cold War, and the World on the Brink and Religion and American Foreign Policy, 1945–1960: The Soul of Containment. Visit his pages on the University of Texas at Austin website and on the Clements Center website.

Europe's eastern borders are convulsing under the pressure of gas, military aggression and human migration. Germany suspends its approval of the long controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline, Polish forces use tear gas on migrants attempting to cross the Belarusian frontier into the country, while Ukraine worries Russian troops on its border threatens its own pipelines. We speak to Professor Sergey Radchenko from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies to pull the threads together. Further west Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Ireland have all imposed strict curfews to mitigate against rises in Covid infections; we hear from the BBC's Bethany Bell in Vienna. The Global Prosperity Index is published, we look at how different parts of the world have recovered, or not, from the Covid-19 pandemic by talking to Alastair Masser at the Legatum Institute. Throughout the programme we're joined by APM's Marketplace presenter Andy Uhler in Louisiana, and Simon Littlewood - author broadcaster and consultant in Singapore. This episode is with Baroness Philippa Stroud. Philippa is the Chief Executive of the Legatum Institute, a think tank focused on supporting vulnerable people from poverty to prosperity. As Philippa's title suggests she is not only a policy developer but also a legislator in the House of Lords.   Philippa spent time in government as a Special Adviser and worked on the development and implementation of Universal Credit. We talk about the lessons that were learned from that experience. Philippa has been in the news recently arguing that the £20 rise in Universal Credit implemented last year should be made permanent. Philippa's background is incredibly interesting and rich. She spent 17 years on the front line supporting vulnerable people including time as a young person working with ex members of Triad gangs. We talk about Philippa's work at the Legatum Institute and also as Chair of the Social Metrics Commission which has carried out some very important work on the most effective way to measure poverty. Finally, we discuss her role in the House of Lords and the role of the House of Lords more generally. It's a fascinating discussion and I hope you enjoy it.
