Albert Johnson Walker was one of Canada's most wanted men — a financial adviser turned fugitive after stealing millions from his clients. But when he fled to England with his teenage daughter and assumed a new identity, the story took a far darker turn. Under the name “David Davis”, Walker befriended Ronald Platt — then murdered him to steal his identity. It was a Rolex watch that would ultimately bring the truth to light. This Trawl begins with a tribute to the late, great Dame Maggie Smith. Then, Marina and Jemma discuss two prominent political figures who have decided their parties aren't for them after all. Labour's Rosie Duffield has become an independent (which raises questions in itself) and Baroness Sayeeda Warsi has left the conservative party, which means she can be more forthright than before which she certainly is about Jenrick. Then it's off to Tory Party Conference where the mood is surprisingly buoyant given their recent thumping. The party members are all falling over themselves to proclaim which of the MPs running to be leader has got their vote. Despite saying maternity pay is 'excessive' Kemi Badenoch is getting the thumbs up from a lot of them and from many ministers too. Though does it count if it's from David Davis? Jemma and Marina are startled by quite a few of the things Kemi has said but not quite as startled as they were to hear about where Robert Jenrick got £75,000 from as a donation. Truss has made an appearance to tell everyone (again) that she's simply misunderstood, that her ideas were all marvellous and that she should have been left in power to further wreck the economy. While Jacob Rees Mogg is on hand to tell us all why we shouldn't be saying 'Chair' instead of Chairman......plus, something about wolves, I think. Hard to tell. Former British nurse, Lucy Letby, is serving 15 life sentences for the murder and attempted murder of 14 babies. All of the infants were under her care when they were killed between 2015 and 2016. This summer her case was thrown out of the Court of Appeal. And yet doubts remain amongst a cohort of people who believe she may have been wrongly convicted on circumstantial evidence. Bizarre interventions on her behalf include that of the former Brexit Secretary, David Davis, on Good Morning Britain last week. Families of the victims say they are dismayed certain elements of the 10 month trial have been taken out of context and fuelled with misinformation. So why exactly do Letby's supporters believe she should walk free? Tech billionaire Mike Lynch, who recently died in a yacht accident off the coast of Sicily, had reportedly been considering funding an "Innocence Project" to investigate the conviction of Lucy Letby, a former nurse found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six others at the Countess of Chester Hospital. This revelation comes as medical and legal experts continue to question the evidence used to convict Letby, describing it as "unsafe." Lynch, known for his expertise in probability theory and his involvement in high-profile legal battles, was one of seven people who lost their lives when his yacht, the Bayesian, sank during a storm. The incident claimed the lives of Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and five others, including Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judith, as well as Clifford Chance lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda. Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was among the 15 survivors who managed to escape on a lifeboat. Former Brexit secretary David Davis revealed Lynch's interest in Letby's case, noting that Lynch had questioned the statistical evidence that played a crucial role in her conviction. “Mike was a world-class expert on probability theory and saw straight through the statistical weaknesses that underpinned the Letby prosecution,” Davis wrote. Lynch's experience with the justice system, particularly his own decade-long battle against fraud charges in the US, may have influenced his interest in investigating possible miscarriages of justice like Letby's. Letby was sentenced to 15 whole-life orders, making her only the fourth woman in UK history to be told she will never be released from prison. The trial, which lasted 10 months, was marked by complex medical evidence and statistical arguments that took time to explain to the jury. Some of the evidence included notes written by Letby that read, "I AM EVIL I DID THIS" and "I killed them on purpose because I am not good enough," which the prosecution presented as confessions. However, other notes suggested a different state of mind, with Letby writing, "Kill myself right now … hate my life, fear, panic, despair, WHY ME? I haven't done anything wrong." Several experts have criticized the conviction, arguing that the reliance on statistical evidence and expert opinion on complex medical issues created an "unsafe" basis for the guilty verdicts. Peter Green, a mathematics professor at Bristol University, told The Economist that the conviction is "unsafe," while Philip Dawid, a statistics professor at Cambridge University, said it "leaves a bad taste in the mouth." Green and other experts argued in their booklet, "Healthcare Serial Killer or Coincidence?" that using statistical correlations to establish guilt was flawed, comparing it to "painting the target around the arrow." Further complicating matters, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) admitted errors in the evidence initially presented about staff entries and exits at the neonatal unit, although they claimed these mistakes were corrected during the retrial. This has not quelled concerns among some experts who believe the conviction should be re-examined. Channel 4 is set to produce a two-part documentary, "The Trial of Lucy Letby," directed by Emmy award-winning filmmaker Daniel Bogado. The series aims to explore the details of Letby's trial and the ongoing debates about her conviction. Meanwhile, a public inquiry into how Letby was able to commit her crimes on the neonatal unit will begin at Liverpool Town Hall. As the public and legal community await the inquiry and documentary, Lynch's interest in Letby's case adds a poignant layer to his legacy. Known for challenging injustices, Lynch's tragic death has reignited discussions about fairness in high-profile cases. The Lynch family, grieving the loss of both Mike and Hannah, expressed their gratitude to those involved in the rescue efforts. "The Lynch family is devastated, in shock, and is being comforted and supported by family and friends. Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy," a family spokesperson stated, asking for privacy during this time of grief. Hannah Lynch, who had just completed her A-levels and was preparing to study English at Oxford University, was remembered for her kindness and academic excellence. “She was endlessly caring, passionately mad, unintentionally hilarious, and the most amazing, supportive, and joyful sister and best friend to me,” her sister Esme said. Her teachers also praised her as “one of the best English students in the country.” As the investigation into Letby's case continues and the public inquiry looms, Lynch's untimely death serves as a stark reminder of the complexities surrounding justice and the importance of thorough examination in high-profile cases. This week, we welcome mystic, sorcerer, artist, and writer David Davis onto the pod to chat about meeting and making sense of the martial mystery. The future is still being dreamed up by all of us. Are you honoring the revolutionary spark of madness that inspires someone to go out and do something? David and I chat about Mars as the moment of radicalization, the initiatory moment of the surgeon's knife as it cuts out what is making the self and society sick. We speak on donning the cloak of the monster, and the sensuality of mysticism as we navigate new ways to speak narratives which allow us to use Mars's power of hatred and discernment to bind the oppressor and reframe our stories towards that of liberation and compassion for all beings. How do we bind the beast of oppression? In what ways does shame protect us from our own tendencies towards violence? What does it mean to be in active service and communion with martial energy and why is it that the best weapon against mars is also mars? We touch on healing, revolution, and the power of anger to get shit done. Join us for this pertinent and important conversation towards allowing in a heated knife to cauterize wounds. We also discuss the changing seasons of life including job changes, big moves, and when friendships come and go.           Culture: How We Learn From HistoryMany have a cynical view of where things are in America. But one of the best ways to engage the culture may be as simple as learning where we came from. Tim Goeglein is passionate about American history, working in Washington, DC as a policy liaison and government operative. Tim talks us through the lessons from history we'd do well to learn, plus insight on election exhaustion and how to put Christ above politics.Receive the book "Toward a More Perfect Union: The Moral and Cultural Case for Teaching the Great American Story" for your donation of any amount!Inbox: How Should Christians Discuss Embryo Freezing? She doesn't think embryo freezing is a good idea, but knows others who think it's OK, especially when considering future family planning.
