Together for Yes is an abortion rights campaign group in Ireland. It campaigned successfully for a Yes vote in the 2018 referendum to remove the Eighth Amendment's constitutional ban on abortion in Ireland. In this episode I talk with Ailbhe Smyth, an Irish academic, and the founding director of the Women's Education, Resource and Research Centre at University College Dublin. As well as being involved in campaigns on women's liberation in the 1970s and on equal marriage she was named as one of the Time 100 most influential people, which she helped found and which was the umbrella organisation for the campaign for repealing the 8th amendment of the Irish constitution which had afforded the unborn the same rights as a pregnant woman. . There is lots of interesting stuff in this interview. The campaign was hugely successful and Ailbhe was one of the people directing it and making sure it didn't make the mistakes that a lot of coalitions make. Hosted on Acast. A pregnant student seeks an abortion in 1960s France in the compelling new drama Happening. Audrey Diwan's stunning film is an immersive insight into life at the time, as young women explore their sexuality but are repressed by a law that bans abortion and, as our heroine puts it "turns them into housewives.” Director Audrey Diwan joins host Anna Smith to discuss the film starring Anamaria Vartolomei. She explains why she was keen to adapt the text by Annie Ernaux, based on a true story, and how the orgasm scene was inspired by one of her own experiences. She discusses the modern day relevance of the topic and also how her gaze is informed by many aspects including her gender. Next, Anna is joined by Orla O'Connor, who was listed as one of TIME's 100 Most Influential People for her work on the Together For Yes campaign. Orla is a passionate feminist and incredible speaker who heads up the National Women's Council in Ireland, and gives a wonderful insight into the ongoing fight for reproductive rights. She also gives her personal response to Happening, and explains the importance of film in raising awareness about access to legal abortion. Happening is in UK and Irish cinemas from April 22nd 2022. In this episode of How The Yes Was Won, we cover the formation of Together For Yes, the national campaign to organise for a Yes vote in the referendum on Repeal. We spoke to activists involved in the campaign, from head office to canvassers on the ground, and discuss the many ways in which people were excluded from it. We also cover how the Irish Media denigrated the campaign from the outset, never really understanding the power of grassroots activism. Links to additional resources are below.A clarification. There is a point that's been interpreted as blaming Together for Yes or ARC for writing non-inclusive legislation. We want to make sure everyone knows that this was not the intention of the interviewee or us, and that FG are to blame, not those groups. We want to make sure everyone knows that activists groups unfortunately do not get to say what goes into legislation, and to thank the people who brought this miscommunication to our attention. Some context was lost in editing and we sincerely apologize for that. Our greater point was not that we could choose or write the legislation, but rather that the campaign did choose who was included in the conversation, and that that did have a knock on effect. We'll go into that in more detail in episode 9, but just want to clear that point up. If you would like to help increase access to abortion in Ireland and elsewhere, please consider donating to the Abortion Support Network.Donate to Abortion Support NetworkTogether For YesIn Her Shoes Women of the Eighth: A Memoir and Anthology by Erin DarcyWritten and edited by Deirdre Kelly and Aisling Dolan. In today’s episode, Tanya Sweeney tells Roisín Ingle why the opening of an Oliver Bonas store in Dublin is bad news for our wallets. (She spent too much on a neon rainbow lamp. What? It sparked joy!) They also discuss that car crash Prince Andrew interview and after encouraging us all to de-clutter our homes, ask why is Marie Kondo now selling her own home-ware range? Also on this episode, Roisín speaks to Alison O’Connor and co-founders of the Together For Yes Campaign, Ailbhe Smyth and Orla O’Connor. Together with Gráinne Griffin, they have written It’s a Yes! ; a new book which reveals the inner workings of that historic women-led campaign.

This time last year we were gearing up for May 25th, the date of the referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment. It was a momentous time, so today the Women’s Podcast looks back, forward and outward. This episode focuses on what has happened in Ireland in the past year and what needs to happen next. It also looks at the situation in Northern Ireland where abortion is still illegal, the United States where there has been a dangerous row back on women’s reproductive rights under President Trump and to other places like Malta and Argentina. Joining Róisín to discuss this is Sorcha Tunney from Amnesty Ireland, on the phone from New York pro-choice activist and journalist Katha Pollitt and Orla O’Connor, director of the National Women’s Council of Ireland, Time Woman of the Year and one of the leaders of Together For Yes. Plus: Róisín talks to Belfast actor Amy Molloy and Welsh writer Rachel Tresize about their play Cotton Fingers. Set in Belfast it tells the story of a young woman making the journey to Wales to access free NHS abortion care.

Welcome to our big 50th episode party! We took over the Vintage Room in The Workman's Club and filled it with sound people. We did a little quiz and gave away some extremely desirable prizes. Then we talked to Oscar-winning graphic designer Annie Atkins whose work you've seen in The Grand Budapest Hotel, Isle Of Dogs, Bridge Of Spies, The Tudors, and loads more. Annie talked to us about the classic and only mildly disturbing family comedy BIG. It was a really interesting conversation and also it's one of the very special times where Alan, Ellen, and Sarah are all in the same room so that was fun. Thank you so much to Alan and Brian at HeadStuff for making this episode happen and to everybody at The Workman's who gave us the space and set us up and made sure we didn't set fire to anything. We donated all of our ticket sales for the night to Together For Yes and we're delighted to say that we raised €300 so thank you to everybody that bought a ticket. Note: We are shamble people and away from the safe confines of the HeadStuff studio we have a tendency to make microphones malfunction. It happens a couple of times during this but it shouldn't affect your listening experience too much unless you have "platinum ears".
