SEASON 2 - EPISODE 106 - TRISTAN OLIVER - CINEMATOGRAPHER In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with cinematographer Tristan Oliver (ISLE OF DOGS, PARANORMAN, CHICKEN RUN). Tristan generously shares his extensive knowledge of stop-motion animation with us, and we spend the majority of the episode learning the ins and outs of shooting 9-inch puppets in a warehouse. Tristan reveals how he (and up to 50+ active units) prepares the lights and cameras for scenes in such a way that doesn't impede upon the work of the animators physically bringing the characters to life, and we discuss the effectiveness of applying the principles and practices of live-action cinematography into the world of animation. In addition to his work in stop-motion animation, Tristan has contributed to live-action projects such as POOR THINGS and the uniquely realized LOVING VINCENT, and he reflects on his experiences in both projects. In the back half of our conversation, Tristan shares how he really felt working with director Wes Anderson on FANTASTIC MR. FOX and ISLE OF DOGS, from learning how to work together on the former to engaging in a battle of wits over the feasibility of deep focus in the latter, and we learn in which films Tristan sees the most of himself. At the end, we close our conversation with an appreciation for the enduring quality of that which is handmade over that which is merely manufactured. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's newest Countdown miniseries: the Wes Anderson Countdown. To honor one of the great still-working indie writer-director auteurs, who's next film ASTEROID CITY comes out later this year, Scott, Scott, and Jay will be watching all 10 of the American filmmakers' works to-date, from his origins with the '90s heist-comedy BOTTLE ROCKET, all the way to his latest feature, 2021's star-studded anthology drama THE FRENCH DISPATCH. Join us each week over the next 10 weeks as we progress through Anderson's full oeuvre in the buildup to ASTEROID CITY! On Part 9 of the Anderson Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit Wes Anderson's second attempt at stop-motion animation: ISLE OF DOGS. Set in a fictional near-future, dystopic Japanese city called Megasaki, ISLE OF DOGS charts the journey of a young boy, Atari (Koyu Rankin), whose authoritarian uncle and legal guardian, Kenji Kobayashi (Kunichi Nomura), as authoritarian the mayor of Megasaki, has banished all dogs to 'Trash Island', a small island off the coast of Negasaki, under the pretense of a dangerous double-pandemic: canine flu and snout fever. Atari's canine companion, Spots (Liev Schreiber) is the first dog to be transported to the 'Isle of Dogs', and after several months of planning, Atari sets out to rescue him. Once Atari makes his crash landing onto the island, he meets a pack of dogs that include the stray leader, Chief (Bryan Cranston), as well as Rex (Ed Norton), King (Bob Balaban), Duke (Jeff Goldblum), and Boss (Bill Murray). Together, Atari and his newly met companions set off across Trash Island in search of Spots, and quickly learn that Atari's uncle has more dastardly plans in store, both for Megasaki and the dogs on Trash Island. The countdown crew reflect on what Wes has done to evolve his game since his first animated outing in FANTASTIC MR. FOX, who brings the most heat out of the ensemble voice cast, and whether the themes of the film resonate more deeply after a global pandemic of our own.

Episode 221: On the morning of December 31, 1888, in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, friends found 61-year-old fisherman François Coupard dead in his fishing shack. Someone had brutally slain Coupard and had mutilated his body horribly after his murder. A quick investigation led to two men, Auguste Neel and Louis Ollivier, trying to flee to Newfoundland on a stolen fishing boat. The pair later admitted their roles in the murder and were tried and convicted. Ollivier was sentenced to 10 years at hard labour, while Neel, against whom the evidence was more solid, received a death sentence, which was carried out on August 24, 1889. This execution was the first and last in North America using a guillotine to do the deed.
