Weinigen schreven zo scherp over de ingekapselde levens van vrouwen in het naoorlogse Italië als de herontdekte Alba de Céspedes. Een avond over liefde, fascisme en literatuur.Bij leven was Alba de Céspedes een van de grote namen van de Italiaanse intelligentsia, bevriend met Simone de Beauvoir en Natalia Ginzburg. Na haar dood raakte ze in de vergetelheid. Haar herontdekking wordt aangevoerd door Elena Ferrante en Annie Ernaux.De in 1911 geboren Alba de Céspedes werd in de Tweede Wereldoorlog een voorvrouw van het verzet tegen Mussolini's fascisme. Haar debuutroman Niemand kan terug (1938) werd subiet door de fascisten verboden omdat vrouwen hierin al te zelfstandig handelden (al lukte ze het nooit om het boek ook daadwerkelijk uit de schappen te krijgen). Zelf moest De Céspedes maanden onderduiken in de bergen nabij Rome.Haar grote doorbraak kwam na de oorlog met het monumentale Zoals zij het ziet (1949) en Verboden schrift (1952), waarin ze de verstikkende man-vrouwverhoudingen die na de oorlog gewoon in stand bleven haarscherp ontleedde. Simon and Rachel speak to Jacques Testard, the founder and publisher of Fitzcarraldo Editions, an independent house based in London that, since its establishment in 2014, has won four Nobel Prizes for literature. Jacques's Nobel winners are Svetlana Alexievich (2015), Olga Tokarczuk (2018), Annie Ernaux (2022) and Jon Fosse (2023). Prior to setting up Fitzcarraldo, Jacques co-founded The White Review, a literary magazine launched in 2011. He's also published work by Claire-Louise Bennett, Jon Lee Anderson and Fernanda Melchor. “Content of the Form” is a new interview series excavating the moral and political meshwork implicit in the use of certain artistic forms and genres. If every form or genre-exercise entails a repertoire of expected tropes with their own often unconscious social history and political function, conversely we can read within the framework of a form a network of concerns and anxieties voiced by the choice of the form. Our first guest in this series, Grace Byron, guides us through the autobiographical works of the french writer, Annie Ernaux. The recipient of the 2022 Noble Prize for Literature, Ernaux's magnum opus, The Years, presents a experiential panoramic history of the 20th century from the situated perspective of an ambivalent bourgeois intellectual who witnesses the triumphs, catastrophes, and disappointments of the arc of the twentieth century amongst the quotidian memories of girlhood, marriage, motherhood, and intergenerational change. Ernaux's characteristic style is diaristic, yet impersonal--striving in its use of the universal "We" to capture a quasi-objectivity on the wreckage of history and loss. Ernaux's formal innovations represent a significant contribution to the development of 20th-century memoir that testifies to a desire to bridge the abyss that separates inaccessible interiority from the universality of unfolding history. In Kathryn Robson's Beyond the Happy Ending: Imagining Happiness in Contemporary French Women's Writing and Film (Liverpool UP, 2025), happiness (and the question of how to define, measure and facilitate it) has become a key theme in political, economic and social discourses in recent decades in France and elsewhere, yet research on happiness in French culture and film has been limited. Given that happiness is clearly gendered, this book looks critically at the ways in which contemporary French women's writing and film give voice to and critique conceptions of happiness. Analysing French and francophone women's writing (including Nina Bouraoui, Hélène Cixous, Annie Ernaux, Camille Laurens, Leïla Slimani, Delphine de Vigan) and film (including Claire Denis, Céline Sciamma and Agnès Varda), I focus on five main areas: images of happiness in consumer and Internet culture; happiness and intimacy in the family and the home; queering happiness; migrated happiness, and happiness and ageing. Whilst the 'happiness turn' is problematic, the desire for happiness, however fraught, matters and I show how representations of happiness in contemporary French women's writing and film offer alternative conceptions of happiness that enable us to rethink happiness in more critical, diverse and inclusive terms. Author Dr. Kathryn Robson is a reader in French at Newcastle University and the author in 2019 of I Suffer Therefore I Am: Engaging with Empathy in Contemporary French Women's Writing and in 2004 Writing Wounds: The Inscription of Trauma in Post-1968 French Women's Life-writing. Host Gina Stamm is Associate Professor of French at The University of Alabama. In The Life, Old Age, and Death of a Working-Class Woman (Allen Lane), sociologist Didier Eribon continues the historical, political and personal reflection he began with his classic memoir Returning to Reims, this time turning his attention to the end of life. Tracing his mother's rapid physical and cognitive decline, and drawing on works by Simone de Beauvoir, Norbert Elias, Annie Ernaux and Michel Foucault among others, Eribon transmutes his rage, sadness and the shame over her death into a nuanced portrait of the woman who raised him. How does our society treat the elderly, Eribon asks? Can the completely dependent speak for themselves – and if not, who can speak for them? Eribon was in conversation about his work with the essayist and novelist Mendez.
