He has over 25 years of experience coaching hosts, including Scott Mills, and in recent years this has focused specifically on podcast hosts. Paul talks about some of the timeless traits of a great host and gives real examples of amazing hosts and what makes them that way, including Trevor Mills, Dodge Woodhall and Lewis Capaldi. Paul also shares the podcast hosts he thinks are doing great things, what we can learn from them and common mistakes podcast hosts make. KEY TAKEAWAYS Paul uses the knowledge and experience he has gained over the past 25 years and applies it to podcast hosts to help make good shows great. The concept of the love shack is to get anyone involved in producing a show in a room and to talk about what they love about each other, it then helps the hosts figure out who they are as characters. It also builds confidence. Courage and bravery are important in a host, they have to be able to push guests to answer difficult questions. Authenticity and letting the audience feel like they know you, is a sign of a great host. Don't underestimate the power of humour as a host, especially if the subject you are talking about is quite dry. Building and painting pictures with words is a technique you can learn as a host to make your audience feel like they are with you, experiencing what you are talking about. Every podcast episode should have a point and some structure, it's important as a host to not ‘waffle'. It's not true that everyone has an interesting story to tell, podcasters need to be wary about which guests they choose and what they base their content around. The right amount of preparation before a show can help you build the right rapport and give you background before interviewing a guest. Emotional intelligence is essential to being a good podcast host, to know when and where to push a guest, for example. Getting your questioning right, to the deep whys of a guest's life, makes an interview more interesting and engaging, creating more depth. BEST MOMENTS "He's just brave to ask those questions” “It helps the listeners of your podcast really build a genuine relationship with you” “Sense of humour is really important” “There are still glass ceilings to be broken by podcasting and that's why I'm really excited by it” “Steven Bartlett is top of his game no doubt, but what's the extra 2% that he can do” “It's become a hobby, but a hobby that's opening doors as well” “The hole in the wall is the feature, the nail in the wall is the benefit, but the 50inch TV is the outcome…some people can't look past the nail” VALUABLE RESOURCES Paul@thepodcasthostcoach.co.uk Website EPISODES TO CHECK OUT NEXT Comparing Podcast Production Options | using AI? - Producer Chris slept in, Rishaug screwed up an entire segment big time, Dreger and Duthie's segment was borderline X rated..only redeeming quality today was Trevor Mills with a dynamite "Who's Got You Back" story. We made it work!

Crooked Brother Jesse Matas joins us on Episode 420 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about his great new solo album “Tamarock”, our favourite album of 2018. Jesse Matas has a great vocal style, and the album features some fine playing, with a lovely sonic palate and a production that really gives all the instruments space to breath. But, above all, it's full of really interesting songs with great lyrical imagery - and that's what makes this album a recording that you really need to check out. You can listen to the rest of our Top Ten favourite albums of the year on Episode 417, and The Next 15 on Episode 418 of Folk Roots Radio. We also take a look at more of the new music we’ve received and this time around we check out albums from Johnsmith, Paul & Trevor Mills, Youngtree and The Blooms, Rich Krueger, The Slocan Ramblers and Wes Collins. Liquid SunShine Podcast - Inebriated Interviews with Vancouver's hip hop underground
On today's installment, the homeboy Trevor Mills (fka T-Train) came by the studio to sit down with the Liquid Sunshine libertines and chat about: his history on the mic, teaching and using Hip Hop in a classroom and his upcoming release, Evidence of a Struggle, and how it ties into his ongoing fundraising for aiding, and raising awareness of mental health issues. DJ C-LO keeps the beats blazing and Sauce and Archivekeep it moving, bobbing and weaving through their usual digressions into madness. Be sure to check the Evidence of a Struggle release party at the Rio Theater (Broadway and Commercial, Vancouver) on May 28. This cause matters. Liquid Sunshine in your brain-piece.
Scene & Heard host Stuart Derdeyn chats with Vancouver rapper/teacher/mental health fundraiser Ttra1n (a.k.a. Trevor Mills) about how the passing of his older brother sparked the new album Evidence of a Struggle financed with a Kickstarter campaign.
