Keir Starmer says Britain is “ahead of the game” on the cost of living — while families face rising fuel, energy, rent and tax bills. In this episode, Julia Hartley-Brewer dissects the Prime Minister's latest press conference, his vague five-point plan, and Labour's failure to explain how ordinary working people are meant to cope with the economic shock caused by the Iran conflict and threats to the Strait of Hormuz. As Donald Trump sends mixed messages on oil, NATO and America's role in the region, Julia asks the key question: is Starmer showing strength, or simply drift?Julia is joined by Claire Pearsall to discuss soaring household costs, Ed Miliband's energy promises, tax on fuel, and why so much of Labour's “help” seems designed for Westminster talking points rather than real life in Britain. And former detective and Rochdale whistleblower Maggie Oliver gives her verdict on the long-awaited grooming gangs inquiry. She warns that survivors are still being failed, accountability is still missing, and the authorities responsible for years of cover-ups may once again escape justice. If this inquiry does not lead to prosecutions, reform and the truth about ethnicity, culture and institutional failure, what exactly is the point? Also: Julia reacts to the BBC's handling of serious allegations surrounding star presenter Scott Mills, questions elite double standards after Tiger Woods' latest car crash scandal, and dismisses the anti-space hysteria around Artemis II and the mission to the moon.Julia Hartley-Brewer broadcasts on Talk from Monday to Thursday, 10AM to 1PM.Available on YouTube and streaming platforms, along with DAB+ radio and your smart speaker. That's it. 36 days until the local elections — and Westminster has gone on holiday. MPs off for two weeks while the country is under real pressure. The cost of living crisis? Still biting. Three terror suspects? Still on the run. The French "one in, one out" migrant deal? Finished. And abroad — it's getting worse, not better. The so-called "special relationship" with the United States is hanging by a thread. Donald Trump has said it plainly: get your own oil. So where does that leave Britain? And where is Keir Starmer while all this is going on? Meanwhile, the mainstream media are obsessed with the sacking of Scott Mills rather than the future of Britain. This is not the moment for holidays, photo ops, or word salads. This is the moment for leadership. Instead — silence, spin, and business as usual. That is exactly why you must vote. Use your vote to send a message — and give Starmer a wake-up call. 36 days to go. The BBC has admitted to the Telegraph that it knew of allegations against Scott Mills almost a year ago but failed to investigate. The corporation had claimed it terminated the Radio 2 presenter's contract as soon as it learned of the allegations of serious sexual offences against a teenage boy between 1997 and 2000.But as The Telegraph's associate editor Gordon Rayner tells The Daily T, a former BBC presenter contacted the corporation in May 2025 to say she had received information about alleged “inappropriate communications” involving Mills. She did not receive a response, and today the BBC admitted her information “should have been followed up and we should have asked further questions”. As this podcast lands, it's 75 years to the day since the first 'God slot' on the BBC Light Programme. It was first called Five to Ten, and is now Pause for Thought on BBC Radio 2. Podcast host Paul has been Pausing for Thought for over a decade, with Chris Evans, Zoe Ball and Scott Mills, and was recently asked to present a history of Pause for Thought to a roomful of Pause for Thoughters, the Radio 2 boss, and today's Breakfast Show host Scott Mills. So a version of that is on this episode, with some golden oldie clips, including Ray Moore and Derek Jameson. And even a bit of Steve Wright, because why not. It's a mini-sode ahead of our Christmas special, so we look ahead to that, with a little more info on Paul's upcoming Radio 4 drama about the first radio drama, The Truth About Phyllis Twigg. The companion episode will be next time on the podcast, but for now there's info on where in London you can go to listen to the story version of that original radio drama - ME London, the hotel on the site of Marconi House and the BBC's first studio. You can go this December, and listen to our exclusive recording, by, Paul, Carina Saner (Phyllis' great-granddaughter) and Flora Saner (Phyllis' great-great-granddaughter). ...And if you can't make it to London, we'll play it for you on the next episode. A little too on our moment-by-moment timeline of British broadcasting - we're in November 1923 and it's GK Chesterton from Manchester, a Welsh talk from Wales, the first radio novel, and some comments in the Radio Times on the benefits of radio opera. (This WAS going to be an episode about the first BBC Armistice broadcast - but with all the above to tell more immediately, I decided to hold back the Armistice episode till the New Year. Colony House is an Indie rock band made up of brothers Will and Caleb Chapman. As well as Scott Mills and Parke Cottrell is playfully self described as land lock surf rock. Their personal genre designation is as much inspired by their hometown of Franklin, TN as their new album the Cannonballers is. The band's music is built on pillars of honesty, accessibility and family. The Cannonballers marks the band's 4th full length release. Their 3 previous studio collections take listeners on a journey through stories of loss, grief and heartbreak. While welcoming them into the hope that comes on the other side. The band has performed their songs for world-wide audiences with 2 appearances on both Late Night with Seth Meyers and Conan. As well as the Today Show, VH1's Morning Buzz and MTV Live. The Cannonballers is an app addition to the band's catalog. Staying true to what Colony House does best and expanding on what their fans have gravitated to for the past decade. Hope and light in the midst of it all. No frills, no gemicks just heart, level, rock and roll music. Caleb is joined today by his delightful wife, Julia who is the Director of Operations for Show Hope, an organization we love and respect. Will is joined by his wife the incredibly talented Jullian Edwards whose music we love and recommend often. Prepare to fall head over heels for these four incredible human beings! . . . . . 2002. The pop culture landscape would never be the same again. No, we're not talking about Robbie Williams £80m, six album deal (although Rudebox would indeed shift the landscape, if not exactly many copies). We're not even talking about Pop Idol top ten contestant Jessica Garlick coming (joint) third in Eurovision, although that was pretty good. We could be talking about the arrival of 6Music and BBC Four (TOTP RERUNS!!).But no, all of these memorable highlights take a positively backseat position against the stellar backdrop that was, quite literally, the 2002 Pop World! Boybands!Girl groups!Kylie!Coldplay!ABS!Don't be fooled listeners, 2002 consisted of twelve months that gave us pop memories like no other. Atomic Kitten rode the Tide! Britney loved Rock (‘n' Roll)! Daniel Bedingfield loved James Dean (possibly)! And amongst the idols and stars and academy's of TV talent shows increasingly speedy conveyor belts, the decade they continued to call the ‘noughties' moved up a gear thanks to Sugababes, Liberty X, Ms Dynamite and countless others. Where could it all end, we collectively asked (quite possibly via MSN messenger, or on a dial-up webchat forum)? And who better to navigate the BEST SELLING compilation of 2002, NOW 53, than senior producer for Listen the award winning premium podcast company David Manero! Taking time away from the Kitchen Disco with Sophie Ellis Bextor, Traitors Uncloaked, and the Pop Top Ten pod with Scott Mills and Rylan Clark, David shares his memories, hits and misses from the 43 Top Chart Hits across his two CDs (and a broken case). And, along the way, rediscover some genuine lost in the vault moments, find out what NOW whiplash is and how to avoid it, consider how the Spanglish Rappers Delight conquered the world, and marvel at how Teutonic techno troublers Scooter really were such a Big Thing. So, put down your Nokia 3310 or your Motorola Razr V3, switch off Big Brother 3, come out of the record department of Sainsbury's and tune into the best of 2002!I'm seein' stars, I can't believe my eyes… Hosted on Acast. He has over 25 years of experience coaching hosts, including Scott Mills, and in recent years this has focused specifically on podcast hosts. Paul talks about some of the timeless traits of a great host and gives real examples of amazing hosts and what makes them that way, including Trevor Mills, Dodge Woodhall and Lewis Capaldi. Paul also shares the podcast hosts he thinks are doing great things, what we can learn from them and common mistakes podcast hosts make. KEY TAKEAWAYS Paul uses the knowledge and experience he has gained over the past 25 years and applies it to podcast hosts to help make good shows great. The concept of the love shack is to get anyone involved in producing a show in a room and to talk about what they love about each other, it then helps the hosts figure out who they are as characters. It also builds confidence. Courage and bravery are important in a host, they have to be able to push guests to answer difficult questions. Authenticity and letting the audience feel like they know you, is a sign of a great host. Don't underestimate the power of humour as a host, especially if the subject you are talking about is quite dry. Building and painting pictures with words is a technique you can learn as a host to make your audience feel like they are with you, experiencing what you are talking about. Every podcast episode should have a point and some structure, it's important as a host to not ‘waffle'. It's not true that everyone has an interesting story to tell, podcasters need to be wary about which guests they choose and what they base their content around. The right amount of preparation before a show can help you build the right rapport and give you background before interviewing a guest. Emotional intelligence is essential to being a good podcast host, to know when and where to push a guest, for example. Getting your questioning right, to the deep whys of a guest's life, makes an interview more interesting and engaging, creating more depth. BEST MOMENTS "He's just brave to ask those questions” “It helps the listeners of your podcast really build a genuine relationship with you” “Sense of humour is really important” “There are still glass ceilings to be broken by podcasting and that's why I'm really excited by it” “Steven Bartlett is top of his game no doubt, but what's the extra 2% that he can do” “It's become a hobby, but a hobby that's opening doors as well” “The hole in the wall is the feature, the nail in the wall is the benefit, but the 50inch TV is the outcome…some people can't look past the nail” VALUABLE RESOURCES Paul@thepodcasthostcoach.co.uk Website EPISODES TO CHECK OUT NEXT Comparing Podcast Production Options | using AI?
