October 21, 2018 What is an atheist issue? American Atheists redefines what is an atheists issue. We will challenge the status quo. In doing so we will lay out a plan to fight for equality and the true separation of religion and government. If you are not happy with the way things are then the time is now to make a change. Jim G. Helton is the National Field Organizer for American Atheists. After attending the 2012 Reason Rally, he co-founded the Tri-State Freethinkers and was appointed American Atheists’ Kentucky State Director. Under his leadership, Tri-State Freethinkers adopted the highway in front of the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter and led a protest that received international attention. He played a key role in eliminating Gideon’s bible distributions in public schools and removing abstinence-only sex education. Mr. Helton’s activism at the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter landed him appearances in the 2017 documentary film Bill Nye: Science Guy and the forthcoming documentary We Believe in Dinosaurs. He has been quoted in countless news outlets, including The New York Times, Miami Herald, and Washington Post. He is a fixture in local media and has given interviews for international television specials in France, Switzerland, and elsewhere. As National Field Organizer, Mr. Helton works with affiliates, local partners, and state directors to challenge religious privilege and fight to protect church/state separation at the local level by building coalitions around specific issue campaigns, including medically accurate sex education, LGBT non-discrimination ordinances, and religious exemptions.
Hey guys this is Mikel from the Blasphemy in the Bluegrass podcast. This is a special bonus episode that is made up of on-the-spot interviews and guest speeches from the second anniversary protest of the opening of Ark Encounter. The Kentucky Secular Society was among the sponsors for the protest, and special thanks goes to Jim Helton and Jenn Scott and all the wonderful folks at Tri-State Freethinkers who made this protest happen. Speakers you will hear in this special episode include Aron Ra, Seth Andrews, Mandisa Thomas and many more. Just a note in advance, it was pretty windy much of the day and in some places the audio is not great. Please be patient when it's a bit hard to hear because it does improve. I hope you enjoy the interviews and speeches from the Ark Encounter Protest!

We start with 15 minutes of Kelly Helton. Kelly is the 13-year-old daughter of Jim Helton and you’ve probably seen her speak on equality, science, and atheism around the country. If she can do it, well, you might not be able to do it but she’s inspiring. Jim Helton is the National Field Organizer of American Atheists. He used the ACES model (listen to find that one out) to develop a local organization called the Tri-State Freethinkers that challenges local lawmakers and most famously took on Ken Ham’s Ark Park. Where does American Atheists go post David Silverman? They’re already on the way. In this episode, we discuss the controversy surrounding the Richard Spencer "Nazi punch" and whether or not it's ok to punch Nazis. Jim Helton from Tri-State Freethinkers joins us for the Activist Spotlight to discuss the Women's March and what local groups can do to make as much impact as possible.
Jim Helton is the President of Tri-State Freethinkers and is the Regional Director in Kentucky for American Atheists. He helped organize the protest at the opening of the "Genocide and Incest Park," (A.K.A. Ken Ham's Ark Park). He and his family have been receiving death threats after calling attention to numerous violations of the separation of religion and government in Grand County schools. This episode features guest speaker Jim Helton talking about issues involving the separation of church and state in Grant County Kentucky and what the Tri-State Freethinkers are doing to defend the rights of non-believing citizens there. Also, we talk about some weird Christmas traditions and how non-religious families celebrate the holidays. One weird holiday tradition we talked about is the 'caganer' that is displayed with Nativity scenes in Catalonia, Spain, Portugal, and Italy. It doesn't get much weirder than this. "A Caganer (Catalan pronunciation: [kəɣəˈne], Western Catalan: [kaɣaˈne]) is a figurine depicted in the act of defecation appearing in nativity scenes in Catalonia and neighbouring areas with Catalan culture such as Andorra, Valencia, and Northern Catalonia (in southern France). It is most popular and widespread in these areas, but can also be found in other areas of Spain (Murcia), Portugal, and southern Italy (Naples). The name "El Caganer” literally means "the crapper" or "the shitter". Traditionally, the figurine is depicted as a peasant, wearing the traditional Catalan red cap (the barretina) and with his trousers down, showing a bare backside, and defecating." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caganer Upcoming Events around Kentucky The details for Secular Secret Santa for American Village mentioned in the podcast can be found at https://kysecularsociety.org/2016/12/secular-secret-santa-for-american-village/ Louisville Atheists and Freethinkers Featured Events Tom Flynn, Executive Director of the Council for Secular Humanism Monday, December 19, 2016 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM Sullivan University College of Pharmacy 2100 Gardiner Lane, Louisville, KY Holiday Party! After hearing televangelist Pat Robertson accuse the Freedom From Religion Foundation of being led by “the Devil,” we hear comedian Robin Williams lampoon the story of Mary and Joseph. We listen to jazz pianist/composer (and FFRF member) Addison Frei’s freethinking song “Clinging,” sung by Tahira Clayton. Then we interview Jim Helton, president of Tri-State Freethinkers, about the successful protest he organized against young-earth creationist Ken Ham’s publicly subsidized “Ark Encounter” in Kentucky, a monument to genocide and ignorance.
