In Pakistan, the punishment for a blasphemy conviction is the death penalty. While no one has yet been executed under these laws, many allegations frequently result in lengthy legal battles, prolonged imprisonment, and significant other hardships for the accused and their families. False allegations have led to riots and Christians being killed. Closer to the Fire host Greg Musselman is joined by Rev. Salim Arthur, who knows firsthand what can happen when false blasphemy allegations are made. Rev. Arthur was arrested, imprisoned, tortured and nearly lost his life, and his family had to go into hiding in Pakistan after a Muslim teenage girl came to Christ. What stands between you and Christ may not be obvious sin, but the idol you refuse to surrender. In the third sermon of our Summer Series, John MacArthur examines the rich young ruler and shows how the law exposes our hearts and leads us to the only Savior.

What is the unforgivable sin? Can it be committed today? Is there any hope for someone who fears they have gone too far? These are some of the most searched questions about the Bible, and Mark chapter 3 gives us more clarity than most people realize. In this message from Mark 3, we explore the moment Jesus warns about a sin that cannot be forgiven. Two groups confront Jesus with opposite conclusions about who He is. His own family believes He has lost His mind. Religious leaders from Jerusalem accuse Him of casting out demons by the power of Satan. Jesus responds with a logical argument, a powerful illustration about binding the strong man, and a direct warning about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Here is what this passage actually teaches. Every sin can be forgiven. Blasphemy against Jesus Himself can be forgiven. The unforgivable sin is not a moment of weakness, a careless word, or a season of doubt. It is a persistent, deliberate, and settled rejection of the Holy Spirit's testimony about Jesus Christ, even when a person knows the truth. It is the kind of hardness of heart that cuts a person off from the only path to forgiveness. If you have ever wondered whether you have committed the unforgivable sin, the very fact that you are asking the question is a strong sign that you have not. Those who have truly hardened their hearts against God are not troubled by the question. This message also answers whether a Christian can commit the unforgivable sin, what it means that Jesus came to bind the strong man, how the Holy Spirit convicts and points people to Jesus, and why C.S. Lewis argued that Jesus cannot simply be called a good teacher.
