Ep. 517: The Future of Christian Higher Education with Ed Stetzer

MinistryWatch Podcast

Regular listeners to this podcast, or regular readers of MinistryWatch, know that we have spent a lot of time covering Christian education. The reasons for our coverage are many. Christian colleges are among the largest Christian institutions in the country, taking in billions of dollars each year. Secondly, what happens in Christian colleges and seminaries often directly affects the church. So even if you don't have kids in college now, or ever, your life and your church will be impacted by what is going on at Christian and secular colleges in this country. Thirdly, higher education – including Christian higher education – is in the midst of a tremendous transition. Demographics, technology, and a national conversation happening now about the value of a college education are all causing Christian colleges to face challenges they have never faced before. That's one reason I wanted to talk with Dr. Ed Stetzer. Ed Stetzer is the Dean of Talbot School of Theology at Biola University and Scholar in Residence & Teaching Pastor at Mariners Church. He has planted, revitalized, and pastored churches; trained pastors and church planters on six continents; earned two master's degrees and two doctorates; and he has written hundreds of articles and a dozen books. More to the point for our conversation today, he helps lead one of the few institutions of Christian higher education that is growing.  I wanted to ask him why, and how, that was happening. Thanks for tuning in today to my conversation with Ed Stetzer. In addition to all the things I mentioned about Ed at the top of the program, he is also Regional Director for Lausanne North America, is the Editor-in-Chief of Outreach Magazine, and regularly writes for news outlets such as USA Today and CNN. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. Until next time, may God bless you.

Do you ever think about the inheritance we are leaving our children and grandchildren? Not monetary, but qualities like clean air, access to clean water, healthy food and a safe and nurturing environment to live in. OR are we on the path to guaranteeing them the opposite, where it will be hard to breath, too hot to go outdoors, food insecurity and famine will be rampant, water shortages a common experience, and we could go on. None of us want that, but the decisions we make today, and the actions we take right now, matter, and so we're going to look that future in the eye and call on all adults to get involved in any way we can. Local action does result in global impact. After that, it's time to dig into the news, and of course, unless you live under a rock, we had Trump's speech at the UN, Super Typhoon Ragasa hitting China, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and soon Vietnam and Laos, Tylenol has been blamed for Autism, the Rapture… did it happen (?), the fact we're getting dumber and those Meta glasses ain't going to help, and of course, the fight for free speech continues. That's just a start when it comes to the weeks' news, and we never get through it all, but we give it a go. We are absolutely delighted to welcome Joseph Masembe who hails from Uganda, and he's the CEO and founder of Little Hands Go Green, as well as Regional Director, Climate Change Advocacy, East Africa. A passionate advocate for our children's future, Joseph launched Little Hands Go Green in 2012, as a civil society organization, with a goal to nurture and empower children as the main drivers of environmental conservation education in their schools, homes and communities. Joseph wants to foster a deep-rooted love and passion for the environment among children through engaging and entertaining activities, and get this, they have planted 872,000 trees since they started – amazing! Joseph is a delight, and you will love listening to what he has to share. So please, come and join us, get caught up on the news, get inspired into action, this Friday 26th September 2025, 8am UK, 9am EU, 10am Uganda, 2pm TH, 3pm SG, 5pm AEST. Heather holds professional licenses in the States of Illinois and Arizona as a Counselor specializing in childhood and adolescent behavioral health. Throughout her career, Dr. Jelonek struggled with closing the mental health gap with the healthcare industry and viewed this obstacle as the primary threat to the spiraling costs of healthcare. Her current role as Managing Director of Bright Health Care of Arizona created new opportunities to improve healthcare integration, improve outcomes and reduce costs from a trauma informed approach. During her studies at Cummings Graduate Institute, she was introduced to the ground breaking CDC/Kaiser Adverse Childhood Experiences study and the connection between the long-term medical costs associated and unaddressed childhood trauma. Dr. Jelonek currently resides in Phoenix, Arizona with her two furkids, Briony an English mastiff and Otto a blue heeler mix. She spends her free time hiking, gardening and challenging beliefs that mental health is different than medical health.

Ryan Embree: Welcome to Suite Spot, where hoteliers check in and we check out what's trending in hotel marketing. I'm your host, Ryan Embree. Hello everyone. Welcome to another episode of The Suite Spot. This is your host, Ryan Embree, continuing our series of the Suite Spot Road Trip into the summer a little bit coming into the fall. I'm here with right down the road from our Travel Media Group headquarters, I-4. I know you probably hear that and think might be a long way away. I-4 can be congested sometimes, but not too bad of a drive here. We're gonna talk about that today. I'm here with Robert Mason, Regional Director of Food and Beverage at Kolter Hospitality. Robert, thank you so much for joining the Suite Spot. Hey, thanks for having me. And we're gonna talk a little bit about your property today. We're gonna talk a lot about the portfolio and your job here as the Food and Beverage Director, but I do want to get to, as it is, tradition here on the Suite Spot, get to know a little bit about your background and what led you to Kolter Hospitality. Robert Mason: Wow. So I've been 42 years in food and beverage. It's all I've ever done. It's all I know. I started in the culinary side. I worked all the way up to executive chef. I actually studied under a master chef in San Francisco Bay Area and, had a really fun journey through culinary for about two decades. And about 15 years ago, I made the transition to the dark side, as I say, got into the front of house operations. and it's been a great journey. Work brought me to Orlando. In San Fransico, I was kind of a small fish in a big pond, but here I'm kind of, was kind of a big fish in a small pond, so to speak. Yeah, but Orlando has certainly grown and developed over the last 20 years that I've been here. And just having fun. And this opportunity actually came up right in the middle of COVID. I came from a much larger property down in South Orlando. And the reason I took this job was couple full first, you know, I like the company culture. I liked the fact that the Skybar had so much to offer. I saw the potential right away. And it's a smaller, easier to manage kind of thing 'cause everything's in one place as opposed to a big sprawling resort with 15 outlets and that kind of thing. But I have stayed with the company because I really do enjoy all the people I get to work with Sarah, I know, you know, Sarah and John from our corporate office and Scott, our president, they just do a wonderful job. And they're really people first. We're a really people first company. So I believe in the vision here and that's why I stay. It's awesome to hear. And your story resonates coast to coast, but I think it's a true example of hospitality professionalism. 'cause it's transferable skills, right? Yeah. You know, you can work at a hotel, whether you're in food and beverage on one side of the country, and then move all the way to the other, side of the country, like your story. And here you are in Orlando, before we get to talk about your property and this beautiful skybar that we're in right now, right behind us, I four can throw a rock to the Kia Center, Citrus Bowl right over there. Orlando City Stadium. For those that aren't familiar, Robert, that might be listening to this podcast, paint a picture of why this is just the perfect intersection and location. You've got yourself a great location here. Robert Mason: We really do. We really do. So, you know, I always tell people we're kind of three different operations within one.

From the Gold Rush that made it the 31st state to today's $3 trillion economy, California has always been a land of opportunity. But families and businesses are now facing crushing inflation, heavy taxes, and government mandates that drive people to leave the Golden State in record numbers. Heather explains how bad policy has hurt working-class communities like Stockton, where small businesses are struggling to survive while their representative still chose politics over providing tax relief. The conversation also highlights looming redistricting battles, grassroots advocacy, and the growing push to hold lawmakers accountable. Heather shares how her team is engaging Californians who feel forgotten, reminding them that their voices and votes matter—even in tough political terrain. California may be at a crossroads, but with citizens willing to push back against runaway government, there is still hope to restore freedom, opportunity, and prosperity in the Golden State.

When I spoke to Fares in late 2023, he had just come back from visiting the Za'atari Refugee Camp, where Meta has established a digital literacy program. Dr. Pamela Roshell's Plan for a Healthier Fulton County: Solving Health Deserts & Boosting Community Wellness Dr. Pamela Roshell is leading a comprehensive effort to transform public health in Fulton County, Georgia. Her strategy is a tailored, holistic approach that addresses the unique needs of communities from North to South Fulton. Roshell's mission focuses on tackling "health deserts"—areas with limited healthcare access. Through strategic partnerships, like the one with Morehouse School of Medicine, she is establishing new community clinics. These hubs offer essential services, including primary care and preventative screenings, to create a more equitable healthcare system for underserved residents. Leveraging her background as a former Obama Administration official and Regional Director for HHS, Roshell brings a deep understanding of securing federal funding for innovative, community-based solutions. A top priority is mental and behavioral health. Roshell is fighting the stigma and lack of access to care through new programs and expanded access points. Her work also directly benefits Fulton County's senior population, with initiatives that improve access to care and promote social engagement to combat isolation. Roshell believes in a holistic approach to community well-being, recognizing that public safety and the arts are interconnected with health. This 360-degree view helps her create policies that improve the overall wellness of the county's residents. Follow @fultoninfo Web: https://www.FultonCounty.gov Call: (404) 612-4000 About: Dr. Roshell, one of the highest regarded experts on health services in the south (and an Obama Administration Presidential Appointee!) – she'd love to talk about how Fulton County is improving quality of life for its residents through developing new clinics in “health deserts,” and working to solve critical health issues for individuals and families in the county's 15 municipalities (Fulton County extends from cities like Milton, Alpharetta, Johns Creek at the top to Fairburn, Chatahoochee Hills and more at the base of the long county!). This includes behavioral health and mental health, some very important topics these days! She is a delight! Please let me know the coordinates I should share with her, and I should have at least one other person to send you for the following day too...   Dr. Pamela Roshell serves as Chief Operating Officer for Fulton County Government, where she provides executive leadership and operational oversight across key service areas including Health and Human Services, Economic Development, Public Safety, and Arts and Libraries. In this role, she manages a broad portfolio of countywide initiatives, directs a large and diverse workforce, and stewards a multi-million dollar operating budget that supports critical programs and services for Fulton County residents. She also ensures alignment with essential community partners, including the Fulton County Board of Health and the Department of Family and Children Services.   Since joining Fulton County in 2017, Dr. Roshell has held several senior leadership roles, including Deputy Chief Operating Officer and Director of Senior Services. Her work has focused on advancing innovative strategies to improve service delivery, expand access to care, and strengthen outcomes for vulnerable populations.   Prior to her service in county government, Dr. Roshell was appointed Regional Director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where she oversaw federal health programs across the Southeast. She also held executive roles at the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), including serving as State Director for AARP Georgia, where she led advocacy, outreach, and program development for more than one million members.   Dr. Roshell holds a bachelor's degree from Columbia College, a Master of Social Work with a concentration in administration from the University of South Carolina, and a Ph.D. in social policy, planning, and administration from Clark Atlanta University.
