It started as a partnership with General Electric, but how long can two companies work towards the same goal? On this week's episode of Slice of Disney, we take a look into another attraction designed for the 1964 World's Fair - the Carousel of Progress. Hear about all the changes made throughout the years, the changes that still *really* need to happen, and which Disney animatronic is basically inspired by Will. 2020 has been a rough one, everybody - but we can always look towards a great big beautiful tomorrow!
One of the last attractions at Disney World that Walt personally oversaw, the Carousel of Progress is a historic show that looks at... well, history! From it's spectacular opening at the NYC World's Fair to its declining popularity at its current location in Magic Kingdom, we're talking all about this classic attraction this week. Music by Colin Paul
In 1964, Progressland debuted at the New York World's Fair. The original concept dated back to the 1950's, and new technologies allowed Walt and his Imagineers to finally bring the idea to life. Sponsored by General Electrical, Progressland (which later became known as the Carousel of Progress) was an instant hit and saw waits of around an hour at the fair despite an hourly ride capacity of 3,000 guests per hour. After the World's Fair, the attraction was moved to Disneyland, then to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. With only a handful of changes over the years, Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress is one of the most historic attractions at the Disney Parks, reminding us that "there's a great big beautiful tomorrow shining at the end of every day." In this episode, we'll explore the detailed history of the Carousel of Progress. I'll also include a binaural audio recording so you can virtually experience the current version of the attraction. Travel back in time to the 1964/1965 New York World's Fair with me as we cover both a music review of the fantastic CD box set called "Walt Disney and the 1964 New York World's Fair" and a review of "Yesterday's Tomorrow: Disney's Magical Mid-Century" by Don Hahn. I also make note of some worthy academic journal articles on Carousel of Progress and it's a small world that you can check out for free. See end of show notes. However, the main feature is an engaging discussion on the "Yesterday's Tomorrow" book with guests Courtney Guth and Emily McDermott, co-hosts of the Book of the Mouse Club podcast. We talk about a number of topics featured in the book, including Disney technology, Mineral King, Mary Blair, early Disneyland, Disney's foray into television, and, of course, the 1964 New York World's Fair. This episode we head to Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom to take a spin on Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. Located in Tomorrowland, the guide map describes this attraction thusly, “Travel through the 20th Century to see how technology has improved our way of life." There are no age or height requirements for this attraction and the thrill level describes this attraction as being a slow ride. Before we answer the age old question of just what is shining at the end of every day, here are five fast facts about Walt Disney’s Carousel of progress. 1. In the 1950’s Walt Disney came up with the foundation of the idea for the Carousel of Progress but the technology available to the Imagineers at the time made it impossible. It wasn’t until General Electric approached Walt Disney to develop a show for the 1964//65 World’s Fair that Walt was able to make the show a reality, opening on April 22, 1964. After a successful run at the Fair, the show was moved to Disneyland where it opened on July 2, 1967. The show ran at Disneyland until September 1973 when it was moved, at General Electric’s urging, to Walt Disney World. The show opened at the Magic Kingdom on January 15, 1975 and still runs daily at the time of this recording. 2. The carousel theatre concept, where the audience revolves around the stage, was developed by a team of imagineers led by Bob Gurr and Roger E. Broggie. This allowed the guests to remain seated during the duration of the show rather than getting up and moving to the next theatre as had been the original plan. 3. The attraction’s iconic song, There’s A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow’ was written by Disney Legends, The Sherman Brothers. When it first opened at Walt Disney World, it had a new song, also written by the Sherman Brothers called The Best Time Of Your Life. In 1993, when the show was given a major overhaul and an update, There’s A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow returned to the show. The Sherman Brothers have stated that that song, There’s A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow was Walt Disney’s Theme Song as he was always so optimistic about the future. 4. The show’s original narrator, playing the part of the father, was singing cowboy Rex Allen. When the show was overhauled in 1993, that role went to radio personality Jean Shepherd, author of the stories that inspired the movie A Christmas Story. Rex Allen was still in the show, this time playing the Grandfather in Act 3. One other voiceover note, Mel Blanc, the legendary voice actor behind Bugs Bunny and Daffy duck, plays Uncle Orville in the show. And Janet Waldo who voices the grandmother in Act 4 was also the voice of Judy Jetson on The Jetsons 5. Of the 32 different audio animatronic figures in the attraction, a crowd favorite is Rover, the family dog. In the current show, Rover is the dog’s name the entire time. When the attraction first opened at Walt Disney World, the dog had a different name in every scene including Buster, Sprot, Quieenie and Rover. Now let’s sit back and enjoy Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. Joining me today is John B. dehaas and after the ride audio we’ll give you our shouts on this classic attraction. This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones, put them on now as we are about to experience Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress at Walt Disney WOrld’s Magic Kingdom! Unlocking The Magic: Talking all things Disney World and Disneyland
Pirates of the Caribbean, located at the end of Adventure Land is one of our favorite attractions. It is a well known "Disney Classic" and a must do at the Magic Kingdom. Believe it or not, the attraction was originally supposed to be walk through wax museum but with the success of Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress at the 1964 New York World's Fair, Walt Disney decided that Audio Animatronics was the best way to have their guests immerse themselves in this fun, pirate story. There was even a movie inspired by the attraction. Have you heard of it? ;) Be sure to visit the pirate themed gift shop at the end of your experience for some really great keepsakes to take home. Truth be told, Bruce has to drag me out every time."Yo ho, yo ho, a pirates' life for me." Ha!
