It's been a busy stretch across both coasts, and we're catching up on two weeks of Walt Disney World updates in one packed episode. The biggest headline? Magic of Disney Animation returns to Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2026! Disney has officially announced plans for a new version of the classic attraction, and concept art has already surfaced. We'll be watching this one closely. [caption id="attachment_74591" align="aligncenter" width="1920"] Meanwhile, Walt Disney World has seen a flurry of updates. After surprise previews on July 18 and 19, the Disney Starlight Parade officially debuted at Magic Kingdom, bringing dazzling new floats and an all-new original character, Whimsy, to Main Street, U.S.A. Greg was there for the early shows, and his full breakdown is in this week's video. Test Track Reopens and BDX Droids Debut Test Track is back! The attraction officially reopened to all guests, boasting updated visuals and effects while keeping its familiar design-your-car feature. Over at Hollywood Studios, BDX Box Droids made another appearance, although some performances were delayed due to Florida's summer storms. Speaking of Hollywood Studios, more construction walls are now visible. Toy Story Land now features new construction walls near the restrooms—possibly signaling upcoming infrastructure work. Disneyland Turns 70 with Celebrations on Both Coasts Disneyland celebrated its 70th anniversary on July 17 with a full day of festivities. One of the highlights? A tribute to the Sherman Brothers playing inside Main Street Cinema. Even more magical: the official Disneyland 70th balloon completed its coast-to-coast flight, landing in California just in time for the anniversary.  Walt Disney: A Magical Life Opens. To mark the occasion, Disney+ released 17 new point-of-view ride-throughs, offering immersive experiences of classic Disneyland attractions in stunning 4 K resolution. It's a subtle but strong message: Disney+ is becoming the go-to source for park content. Disney+ Highlights and Rapid Fire News In addition to the Disneyland POV collection, Disney+ dropped: Zombies 4 SHARKFEST content for Shark Week A new daily news program: What You Need to Know The return of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse with brand-new episodes On the awards front, The Walt Disney Company earned 137 Emmy nominations, a huge haul across streaming and broadcast platforms. Foodies will appreciate the peach-flavored Dole Whip, which appeared on Dole Whip Day (July 17) at Disneyland. Over at Disney's BoardWalk, Greg found a unique banana Nutella dog that might just be the most unusual snack this month. Marvel and More: Trailers, Concerts, and Popcorn Buckets A double dose of excitement with the release of the TRON: Ares trailer, complete with a new Nine Inch Nails soundtrack single, and the full trailer for Pixar's Hoppers ahead of its 2026 debut. The Descendants and Zombies: Worlds Collide concert tour kicked off in San Diego, featuring stars from both franchises. And in popcorn bucket news, Greg tracked down new offerings in the parks, and the biggest popcorn bucket ever! Finally, the Fantastic Four make their big-screen return this weekend. BROADWAY NATION
CRAZY FOR NOSTALGIA! — BROADWAY'S NOSTALGIA CRAZE OF THE 1970s, Part 2.

BROADWAY NATION

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 26, 2025 26:01

In this episode I continue my review of Broadway's Nostalgia Craze of the 1970s and beyond. Many of the musicals that emerged in the late 60s and very early 70s were also influenced by the incipient Nostalgia Craze, even if overall their shows were decidedly modern. HAIR, Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Applause  all included musical sequences that recalled the Vaudeville era and Silver Age of Broadway. So nostalgia was in the air, and then No, No, Nanette sent it into the stratosphere! And all of this was before the nostalgia craze expanded to include the 1950s. Almost exactly one year after the premiere of Nanette the musical Grease opened on Broadway. It became wildly popular and ran for eight years on Broadway passing Fiddler to become the longest running musical of all time until A Chorus Line passed it. And Grease's enormous success set into motion a 1950s wing of the nostalgia craze by inspiring both the movie American Grafiiti (1973) and the TV show Happy Days (1974). The success of Nanette led directly to a 1973 revival Irene, the smash hit musical that opened in 1919 and became the longest running musical of its day. And Grease led directly to Over Here !, the 1974 musical in which the director, choreographer and producers of Grease attempted to do for the 1940s, what their previous show had done for the 1950s. The two still living Andrews Sisters, Patty and Maxine, where enticed to star in Over Here!, and the Sherman Brothers, of Disney fame, provided a terrific set of brand new very authentic sounding Big Band era style songs for them to swing. Broadway's Nostalgia Craze continued with a hit 1975 revival of the Jerome Kern Princess Theater musical Very Good Eddie, then in 1979 both the 1928 Edie Cantor vehicle Whoopee! and the 1930's style classic Burlesque show, Sugar Babies.  It was inevitable that the movie 42nd Street itself would be transformed into a Broadway stage musical in 1980. That same season there was the Marx Brothers inspired revusical A Day In Hollywood A Night In The Ukraine. 1983 brought a hit revival of Rodgers & Hart's On Your Toes, and over the next decade there would be two Gershwin “revisals”, both of them so heavily reworked that they were given new titles: My One And Only in 1983, and Crazy For You in 1993. In between, came the Broadway debut of a 1937 London hit Me And My Girl in 1986. I would even include the 1980 blockbuster Annie in this category. Although it was, of course, an entirely new musical it certainly played on nostalgia for the comic strip and radio show Little Orphan Annie from the Depression Era, and smartly used that to echo the recession of the 1970's. Some people would say that the Nostalgia Craze never ended, at least as far as Broadway is concerned.  Although, revivals of popular musicals have been part of the Broadway mix throughout most of its 120+ year history, the success of No, No, Nanette and its successors created a pattern and expectation that in every season – there should be at least enough revivals to fill out a Tony Award “Best Revival” category. And you could say that the immense popularity of City Center's Encore Series is an extension of the Nostalgia Craze, as well. I for one hope that we will never tire of rediscovering and reinventing the great musicals of the past. Riley's request for a documentary about two legendary brothers who became Walt Disney's personal staff songwriters in the 1960s. Over the course of their illustrious decades-spanning careers, they composed such all-time classic beloved evergreen masterpieces as "Fidelity Feduciary Bank," "Let's Put It Over with Grover," "The Boomps Song" and of course "Detroit." But beneath those hummable earworms, all was not well for Richard and Robert, for theirs is a story that involves bitter personality clashes, familial estrangement, post-traumatic stress disorder and songs with titles like "Rutabega Rag," "The Ugly Bug Ball," "A Most Befuddling Thing," "Va-Va-Va-Veee (For Victory)," "Don't Shoot the Hooey to Me, Louie," "Protocoligorically Correct," "The BunnyBee Song," "Dolly Of PaPali," "Kiddy-Widdy-Winkies" and yes those song titles are all real. Jeff and his cousin Greg Sherman's film, The Boys, chronicles their fathers' Disney journey from Annette Funicello's hit single, Tall Paul, through The Disney Songbook of Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and legendary Disneyland Park rides including It's A Small World (After All!)Jeff joins us along with HIS next-gen musical son Alex, who offers up one of his beautiful songs. Jeff talks about his remarkable childhood which found him on  sets with his Dad, at scoring sessions for Tom Sawyer and touring Disney Studios with Walt Disney! Jeff also describes the fraught relationship between his Dad and Uncle which somehow forged treasured tunes that have brightened the world. In celebration of its 60th anniversary, ABC and 20/20 recently aired 'The Untold Story of Mary Poppins, co-produced by Jeff and his cousin Greg. For this production, The ABC News archive doors swung wide open and the cousins discovered early drawings, backstage footage, archival interviews and the audio tape recordings of the Sherman Brothers attempting to win the hardened heart of the famously crusty Mary Poppins Author, P.L. Travers. The special also details how the Sherman Brothers both spotted Julie Andrews performing a scene from My Fair Lady on The Ed Sullivan. Each sensed that she would be a perfect Poppins but knew that the pick needed to be Walt's idea and so Broadway tickets were arranged and on cue, he walked backstage and offered Julie Andrews the part. The special also includes interviews with Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and today's legends who have been moved and inspired by The Sherman Brothers including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tom Hanks and Emily Blunt.Jeff shares that through the noise of his father and uncle's contentious relationship, they both loved him and were generous with lessons and opportunities to visit sets, sit in on recording sessions and ask questions of greats like John Williams and Irwin Kostal. Jeff received piano lessons from his Tin Pan Alley Tunesmith grandfather, Al Sherman and Jeff's polio vaccine inspired the beloved classic, A Spoonful of Sugar. All that plus Alex Sherman remembers his grandfather and performs an original tune!Path Points of Interest:Jeff on Facebook Jeff on YouTubeJeff on IMDBThe Untold Story of Mary PoppinsThe Boys: The Sherman Brothers' StoryEntrance by Jeffrey ShermanAlex ShermanRobert B. Book Vs. Movie: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (replay)The 1964 Ian Fleming Novel Vs. the 1968 Classic MovieBook vs. Movie: Chitty Chitty Bang BangThe Margos explore Ian Fleming's only children's story, "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," published in October 1964, shortly after his death at 56. Written for his son Caspar, the story features characters inspired by Fleming's children and their friends, set against the backdrop of 1920s aero-engine racing carts. The tale follows Commander Caractacus Pott and his magical car, "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," named for the sound it makes. The car embarks on various adventures in England and France, able to swim and fly while evading villains who kidnap children for robberies. Produced by Albert "Cubby" Broccoli, the film took liberties with the story and included music by the Sherman Brothers. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song and became a stage musical in 2002.So, which did we like more between the original story and the 1968 adaptation? Book Vs. This D23: Ultimate Fan Event 2024 celebrated The Sherman Brothers in a big way. They have contributed so much to Disney's legacy, so we wanted to take this episode to pay our own special tribute to them. Walt Disney hired Richard and Robert Sherman in 1960 to be the Walt Disney Studios ONLY in-house composers, and they worked on such classics like Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, The Parent Trap, “The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room”, “it's a small world after all”, and hundreds more. Richard and Sarah give a brief history of the Sherman Brothers and share our personal stories meeting Richard Sherman.    Then, sit back and listen to the entire “Road To Cherry Tree Lane: Walt Disney's Mary Poppins” panel, recorded at D23 2024. Disney music historian Randy Thornton hosted this panel in which he shares how Walt's daughters Diane and Sharon, Davy Crockett, Disneyland/Vista Records, and Annette Funicello were all crucial intersections on “The Road to Cherry Tree Lane ” and Walt Disney's Mary Poppins. You'll hear some great history, and also audio excerpts from the story meetings between the Sherman Brothers and P.L. Travers - writer of Mary Poppins books. If you watch this episode on YouTube, you'll see a slideshow of images to go along with the panel.   Prepare yourself, because the tributes continue! During the D23 Disney Parks Showcase panel at The Honda Center on 8/10/24, Meghan Trainor stepped onstage to sing "Feed The Birds", and we've included an excerpt here.   Today in Star Wars History - 8/19/1973   Happy Birthday Ahmed Best! For the Star Wars Prequels, Ahmed Best provided the motion capture and voice for Jar Jar Binks who was the first fully-computer-generated supporting character in a feature film.    He also provided the voice for Jar Jar in Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and has a cameo as Achk Med-Beq in Attack of the Clones.    Ahmed returned to the Star Wars saga in a flashback to Order 66 in The Mandalorian episode, “Chapter 20: The Foundling,” He is the Jedi Kelleran Beq who saves Grogu. On May 25, 2024 the world lost a legendary songwriter emblematic of the term Disney Legend. Richard M. Sherman, who, with his brother Roger, wrote some of the most beloved songs of the 20th century and into the 21st century, too, passed away at the age of 95. It's almost impossible to sum up Richard's life and legacy in the span of a few sentences, or even over this conversation, though I want to create space to honor a man whose music and spirit will continue to illuminate our lives for generations to come. On this episode of Notably Disney, host Brett Nachman is joined by two individuals who knew, wrote about, and worked with Richard over the years. Author Jeff Kurtti is a celebrated Disney author who has written several dozen books about various facets of Disney. Central to this dialogue, he is the co-producer of The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story documentary and an editor on the Walt's Time: From Before to Beyond book about the Sherman Brothers. Author Jim Fanning is an accomplished Disney author of many books, including the recent Drawing 100 Years of Disney Wonder, and has over the years crafted many articles, videos, and other pieces of writing about the Sherman Brothers' work. Jeff and Jim share their memories of Richard Sherman, including some incredible anecdotes and facts that illustrate the songwriter's creativity and kindness. Tony Nominee Liz Larsen (BEAUTIFUL, HAIRSPRAY, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, STARMITES) joins David to share her love of the Disney Parks, specifically "Soarin'," "it's a small world," and the movie MULAN. When Liz was 19 she finally got to go to Disneyland for the first time and shares her memories from that trip, including going on "it's a small world" which she describes as "life changing." Many of Liz's Disney stories revolve around family, watching the movies with them and falling more in love with the characters, and an epic trip in 2005 for five days to Walt Disney World, battling the Florida weather and two small kids (and what happened after a family meal at Cinderella Castle). Liz's love for Disney is infectious, especially when she talks about the attractions and movies in the Disney universe that speaks to her. No "E-Ticket to Broadway" episode would be complete without mentioning Dopey, but this time it's the guest who brings up the Seven Dwarfs, specifically how she wants to be just like them when she's older. At Tiana's Palace and Blue Bayou there were hero tables setup to honor missing heroes. They had a slice of lemon on the bread plate to remind us of the bitter fate of those who will never return, a pinch of salt symbolizing the tears endured by those who sacrificed all, an inverted glass for those who cannot toast with us, and an empty chair, representing a seat that remains unclaimed at the table. – https://wdwnt.com/2024/05/disneyland-memorial-day-missing-hero-tables/ Construction in Downtown Disney is coming along nicely. On the west end of the shopping district, the future security area is nearing completion, along with Din Tai Fung. Parkside Market is still a ways away from being complete, but is making quick progress. – https://www.micechat.com/387375-disneyland-update-beautiful-fantasies-overwhelming-nightmares/ An entire area in Disneyland is undergoing work from the ground up! Critter Country, which closed a few weeks ago, has had it's walkways torn up, and there is a lot of work being done. The reopeneing date of the land has been pushed back “to be announced.” – https://www.micechat.com/387375-disneyland-update-beautiful-fantasies-overwhelming-nightmares/ A new droid has come to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge to narrate the Season of the Force version of the fireworks. “Fire of the Rising Moons” debuted as an alternative musical score for the nightly fireworks in Batuu. An R-1 droid named Bard has now arrived to accompany the display with a narrative. Bard and the “Fire of the Rising Moons” show will continue after Season of the Force on nights with fireworks. – https://www.micechat.com/387375-disneyland-update-beautiful-fantasies-overwhelming-nightmares/ The Matterhorn is turning 65 this year, and Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar is getting in on the celebration. Starting June 1, Trader Sam's will offer a coconut-pineapple Dole Whip, wish a coconut shaving topping and blue and silver edible glitter mixed in. It will come in a special souvenir cup decorated with images of the Matterhorn. – https://www.micechat.com/387375-disneyland-update-beautiful-fantasies-overwhelming-nightmares/ Weeklyteers staying at the Pixar Place Hotel in the concierge level now have a place to hang out.
