New here? Start with our Start Here playlist — five episodes that will change how you think about motherhood. You know you should declutter. You feel better when you do it. And yet the stuff just keeps piling up — on the counters, in the closets, in that one chair. If you've been carrying guilt about the state of your home, this episode is your permission slip. JoAnn sits down with Emily McDermott, decluttering coach and host of the Moms Overcoming Overwhelm podcast, to dig into why letting go feels so hard — and why it has almost nothing to do with laziness. From the guilt of getting rid of gifts to the psychology of why Target and Costco are basically designed to fill your home with things you'll never use, this conversation is equal parts validating and genuinely useful. In this episode: Why we have so much more stuff than previous generations — and why it just keeps coming The real reason decluttering gets put off again and again (hint: it's not that you don't care) How to handle the guilt of getting rid of a gift — especially when the gift-giver asks where it went Why keeping a gift out of guilt doesn't actually honor the relationship The photo trick that lets you release a gift without the weight of it What Costco and Target are actually selling you (it's not the stuff) The "aspirational self" trap — and why buying for who you wish you were is filling up your home What to do if you're catching the pattern after the fact, not in the moment Why holding onto something you feel guilty about buying is costing you more than you think The one thing to remember when you need permission to let something go Whether it's the Costco tent you bought because you thought maybe you'd camp, or the gift from your mom that's been sitting in a closet for three years — this episode will help you release the weight of it. You don't have to keep things out of guilt. And you don't have to earn the right to a home that actually feels good to be in. If you've ever felt overwhelmed just looking around your home…this episode is for you. We're kicking off a 3-part Spring Cleaning Series with the most important first step: decluttering. Because before you organize or deep clean, you need to clear the excess. And if you've ever struggled to get started—or felt stuck halfway through—it's not because you're lazy or unmotivated. There's actually a reason clutter feels so heavy. In this episode, I'm joined by guest expert Emily McDermott, and we're diving into the science behind clutter—including how it can increase cortisol levels and contribute to stress, overwhelm, and decision fatigue. But more importantly, we're giving you a simple, realistic way to move forward. ✨ Inside This Episode, We Cover: Why clutter impacts your mental load (and what's happening in your brain) Where to start when everything feels overwhelming Practical, doable steps to begin decluttering your home Common mistakes to avoid (that keep you stuck) How to work through emotional clutter (the things that are hard to let go of) What aspirational clutter is—and why it's keeping you from a home that actually works for your life How to make progress without needing hours of uninterrupted time ✨ Why This Matters Decluttering isn't just about getting rid of things—it's about creating space. Space to think clearly. Space to breathe. Space to actually enjoy your home again. And when you start here, everything else—organizing, decorating, cleaning—becomes easier and more effective. ✨ What's Next in the Series This episode is part one of our Spring Cleaning Series: Decluttering (this episode) Organization (coming next) Cleaning hacks and tips JOIN The Spring Cleaning Challenge...starting Monday, April 13th Make sure to follow along so you can move through each step with clarity and confidence. ✨ Ready for Help with Your Home? If you're feeling stuck—not just with clutter, but with how your home looks and functions as a whole— A Decorating SOS Call is your next step. Together, we'll look at your space, identify what's not working (from clutter to layout to design), and create a clear, step-by-step plan so you can move forward with confidence. Paring Down: Realistic minimalism to live more intentionally
How would your loved ones feel if they had to go through your stuff after you're gone? It's tough to think about, but the emotional weight of decluttering is heavy for those we leave behind. No one wants their family grieving while sorting through a lifetime of belongings—wondering what to keep, what to toss, and what any of it truly meant. That's where Swedish death cleaning comes in. More than just decluttering, it's a thoughtful, intentional way to organize your life now so your loved ones aren't overwhelmed later. I was so happy to sit down with Emily McDermott of Moms Overcoming Overwhelm to talk through: • What types of things to declutter and organize today in the off chance we pass away unexpectedly • What is "the sign up list" and how does it preserve your family's relationships? • What book do we recommend to help you through the process? Hey friend! Did you know that multiple studies have shown a direct correlation between a cluttered environment and elevated levels of cortisol — our body's primary stress hormone? When our surroundings are messy or chaotic, our brain perceives it as “unfinished business,” which keeps us in a state of stress. So even if you're not consciously thinking, "Ugh, this clutter is stressing me out," your body is. And it's responding by keeping you in a low-grade stress mode — making it harder to focus, sleep, or even relax. But let's think beyond cortisol for a second. Clutter also impacts: Your energy: It's mentally draining. Your relationships: It can lead to arguments or embarrassment about inviting people over. Your productivity: Visual distractions make it harder to concentrate. Your confidence: A cluttered home can make you feel like you're "failing" at adulting — even though you're absolutely not. You deserve to feel proud of your home — not overwhelmed by it. Ready for help doing just that? Last fall saw the release of a massive new autobiography from legendary Disney Imagineer Bob Weis, who ultimately led Walt Disney Imagineering as its president toward the end of his career with the company. Dream Chasing: My Four Decades of Success and Failure with Walt Disney Imagineering recounts Bob's amazing time with Disney Imagineering, working on new theme parks like the Disney-MGM Studios and Tokyo DisneySea to conceptualizing projects that never materialized. It's a wonderful look at not only one person's career, but also the major endeavors that they contributed to. Hey Friend! I was completely exhausted from constantly feeling tied to my phone. I spent hours and hours on social media every day, posting and scrolling while missing what was happening right in front of me, convinced that social media was the way (the only way!) to grow my business. I felt ruled by this little device and I didn't know how to control it. Our phones are a luxury, to be sure, and they can be used for good, especially when it comes to running a business. But there's a fine line we tend to cross over where our relationship with our phone becomes unhealthy. It's easy to be completely obsessed and dare I say? Addicted! This used to be my story. In today's guest episode, you'll hear my conversation with my friend Emily McDermott on her podcast Moms Overcoming Overwhelm. Listen in as I share a bit of my journey of how I found my way from overwhelm and struggling to finally becoming the good, present wife, mom and business owner I truly wanted to be. Grab a notebook and pen, throw your phone out of reach and write down these tactical tips on how you can begin to develop a healthy relationship with your phone, or at least, a healthier one, take baby steps to reduce dependence and create realistic boundaries. It's time to ask the deeper questions and take back your time so you can be present, serve others and make an impact for God's glory. I pray this blesses you!
