Disney almost had a Legend of Sleepy Hollow ride, in not one, but TWO different parks. In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we unearth some rare concepts for an Ichabod Crane-themed attraction by Imagineering—ideas that, much to our chagrin, never saw the light of day. We begin with a brief tour through the history of the Sleepy Hollow portion of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, highlighting some incredible concept art by Mary Blair. From there, we head over to Walt Disney World to investigate what happened to Ichabod in both Fantasyland and Liberty Square. Along the way, we explore architectural influences rooted in literary history, uncover the origins of a classic Haunted Mansion song, and learn the backstory behind a popular invisible dog joke. Kate also shares details about a little-known, never-realized land once proposed for Disneyland. Meanwhile, Kirk terrifies us with a bizarre attraction from Hong Kong and reveals some shadowy concepts that reflect his deepest wishes for Liberty Square. We end the episode watching the Headless Horseman ride into the sunset—along with our hopes for what could have been (and may never be) when it comes to seeing this eerie attraction brought to life in the Disney parks.Join us LIVE on YouTube most Thursdays at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast.Distory T-shirts and StickersKate's SubstackKate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD app

In honor of Women's History Month we're producing a two-part series about two artists who were visionaries and trailblazers. In part 2, we look at the career of Mary Blair. She changed the way Walt Disney wanted to make animation and brought modernist sophistication to his style. But not everyone at the studio was on board with Walt's dream to “get Mary in the picture.” I talk with animation historians John Canemaker and Mindy Johnson about the influence of Mary Blair, and how we've experienced her work more than we've actually seen it. And I talk with author Gabrielle Stecher about the more complicated aspects of Blair's legacy. Mindy Johnson's book is Ink & Paint: The Women of Walt Disney Animation. John Canemaker's book is Magic Color Flair: The World of Mary Blair. Gabrielle Stecher's article is “Examining The Legacy of Mary Blair.” This episode is sponsored by Audible and Remi. In honor of Women's History Month, we're producing a two-part series about two visionary and trailblazing artists: Mary Blair and Milicent Patrick. They went to the same art school. They each began working at Disney during the Depression. They were both singled out for their talents but left in 1941. From there, they went on to have wildly different careers, but each had a lasting impact on pop culture. In part one, I talk with authors and historians Mindy Johnson and Mallory O'Meara about Milicent Patrick. Mistakes? Bring 'em on! In this delightful episode, Jed Doherty chats with author and illustrator Eliza Kinkz about her charming new picture book, "MISTACO" - a celebration of imperfections and the beauty of embracing our flaws. Eliza shares how the book was inspired by her own experiences growing up, where she struggled to open up about her mistakes. She wanted to create a "safe space" for families to share their slip-ups without judgment. And what better way to do that than with a silly, taco-themed character named "MISTACO" - a nod to the Spanglish words Eliza grew up with. As an artist, Eliza's vibrant, chaotic style is the perfect match for this playful story. Jed praises her use of "joy, color, and chaos" - qualities that Eliza says were heavily influenced by the legendary Disney artist Mary Blair. It's a style that perfectly captures the unpredictable, messy nature of childhood. But "MISTACO" isn't just about the laughs. Eliza and Jed dive deep into the importance of teaching kids (and adults!) to embrace their mistakes. They share personal stories of how parental reactions can deeply impact a child's self-esteem, and why it's crucial to model self-compassion. Whether you're a parent, educator, or just a kid at heart, this episode is a delightful reminder that perfection is overrated. So grab a taco, get cozy, and get ready to celebrate your inner "MISTACO"! We also have a fun time speaking with Brenda Do, author of It's OK Not To Know. Brenda shared how the inspiration for the book came from observing her young nephew's hard reaction to making a mistake. This led her to explore the important lesson of embracing failure and uncertainty as a path to growth. Brenda emphasized the need to teach self-compassion to children, rather than pushing them to be perfect. She drew parallels to her own upbringing in the Asian-American community, where mistakes were often harshly judged. Brenda's book aims to celebrate curiosity and the freedom to not have all the answers - a message that resonates for readers of all ages. Jed and Brenda's discussion highlighted the power of using children's literature to promote empathy, resilience and the joy of learning. I had Mary Platt on today. It was a really fun talk because we were at the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University in Orange, CA and she did a walk and talk of the Disney material, and that's her expertise. In fact, she's done a book on that specific area. So this is a great podcast to watch on YouTube because you can see the paintings and what we're talking about. We  just had a wonderful conversation in the museum, talking about the main animation related exhibit they have at the moment which is on Disney artist and animation pioneer: Mary Blair. So very interesting, enlightening talk with Mary Platt, Director of the Hilbert Museum of California Art.

Prasansook "Fawn" Veerasunthorn is a Thai film director and animator. She worked as a storyboard artist on the Disney Animation films Frozen, Moana, and Zootopia and as head of story on Raya and the Last Dragon. Her first feature film was Disney's Wish, in collaboration with Chris Buck. This episode delves into Fawn's transformative journey upon relocating to the US, navigating the hurdles of language barriers and cultural disparities. Despite these challenges, she found solace and purpose in her passion for art, propelling her forward on the path to becoming an animator and director for Disney projects. Fawn Veerasunthorn, born in Chonburi Province, Thailand, found her calling in art from a young age, inspired by the magic of Disney's "Dumbo," particularly the work of Mary Blair. After attending Triam Udom Suksa School in Bangkok, Fawn pursued medicine at Mahidol University but soon realized her true passion lay in fine arts. Encouraged by animator Paitoon Ratanasiritrawoot, she made the bold decision to move to the United States and study at the Columbus College of Art and Design. Upon graduating in 2004, Fawn embarked on a remarkable journey in the animation industry, working at esteemed studios such as 6 Point Harness, Warner Bros. Animation, Nickelodeon Animation Studios, and Illumination. Her talent as a story artist shone through in projects like "The Lorax" and "Despicable Me 2." In 2011, Fawn joined Walt Disney Animation Studios, contributing her skills to blockbuster hits like "Frozen," "Moana," and "Zootopia." Her exceptional work led to her promotion as head of Disney's animation department and her pivotal role as head of story on "Raya and the Last Dragon." Fawn's achievements reached new heights when she was appointed as co-director of Disney's upcoming film "Wish," making history as the first Thai artist to helm a Disney animated feature. Her contributions to the industry have been recognized by both Disney and the Government of Thailand, solidifying her legacy as a trailblazer in animation.

News: The Adventureland Treehouse will open later this week to the public, but Disney released a preview of the reimagined attraction online last week. The video shows the father's painting area which is wheelchair accessible and allows guests who cannot climb steps to experience the different rooms. The animatronics, audio, and overall asthetic looks amazing. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/videos/full-tour-adventureland-treehouse-at-night-disneyland-resort/ https://www.micechat.com/338868-breaking-news-disneylands-new-adventureland-treehouse-revealed/ The new bar at the Villas at the Disneyland Resort has opened to guests. The Palm Breeze Bar is colorful and fun, reminiscent of Mary Blair's designs. The food has been reported as very good, however it is on the pricier side. This could explain why a new location like this isn't as busy as other similar locations that have drawn much bigger crowds. – https://www.micechat.com/372173-disneyland-update-treehouse-triumph-jungle-turbulence-toontown-turmoil/ With the Holiday season starting this week, the Christmas tree on Main Street has been installed. From ears, to spirit jerseys and everything in-between, there is truly something for everyone. – https://www.micechat.com/369082-disneyland-holiday-merchandise-2023/ A new character from the upcoming Disney movie Wish is going to be meeting and greeting at the resort soon. On November 22nd, the day of the movie premiere, she will be in front of the Royal Hall in Fantasyland. It isn't clear if she will be around beyond the one day, but we will update you once we know. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/11/asha-from-wish-arriving-at-disneyland-resort-on-november-22/ There is trouble on the waterways of the Jungle Cruise. The attraction closed abruptly last week and was closed through the weekend. Scrims have gone up around the tiger area that can be seen from the exterior portion of the Indy queue. Micechat reports that the rockwork by the tiger was crumbling and in need of repair. The attraction will hopefully reopen with this section behind scrims. – https://www.micechat.com/372173-disneyland-update-treehouse-triumph-jungle-turbulence-toontown-turmoil/ As we reported on previously, part of Toontown have come out from behind construction walls. The fountain is the only section that was previously closed to guests that is still unavailable, and the walls moved around Goofy's How to Play Yard, and Donald's Duck Pond. November 11th should be the last day for all walls in Toontown, unless the schedule slips. – https://www.micechat.com/372173-disneyland-update-treehouse-triumph-jungle-turbulence-toontown-turmoil/ January 7th will mark the end of Tail of the Lion King in the Fantasyland Theatre. The show ran for a little under two years, and wasn't as flashy as other shows that used this venue, but it was still a very well done, lively show. – https://www.micechat.com/372173-disneyland-update-treehouse-triumph-jungle-turbulence-toontown-turmoil/ Discussion Topic: Adventure by Disney Trip with Josey https://www.adventuresbydisney.com/destinations/around-the-world/global-jet-adventures/ This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
