Some things can't be seen—only felt. The texture of presence, the quiet shifts in atmosphere, the way the body speaks before words arrive. In the clinic, it's not always the protocols or point prescriptions that lead the way, but something quieter. Something more fluid. In this conversation with Felix de Haas, we meander through the tactile world of East Asian medicine—through pulse, palpation, and the subtle feedback that unfolds when you listen with your hands. Felix shares how Chinese medicine didn't just appear in his life—it found him. And how the most meaningful parts of practice often live in the places we're still learning to trust.Listen into this discussion as we explore the idea of 通 tong as communication and opening, the felt shape of qi, why protocols eventually fall away, and how clinical insight often begins with not knowing.Felix brings a lifetime of experience, sense of history, and a willingness to stay curious. This conversation is for anyone who's ever wondered if the body might be whispering more than we're used to hearing.

Contrary to popular belief, global migration levels have remained relatively stable. So why has it become such a hot button issue on the political world stage? Hein de Haas is a professor of sociology at the University of Amsterdam and an expert in migration. His book, How Migration Really Works: The Facts About the Most Divisive Issue in Politics delves into migration as a historical and ongoing phenomenon, comparing past and present migration patterns.Hein and Greg discuss common misconceptions about migration, why people migrate in the first place, and what the actual impact of migration is on the economy, culture, and climate. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Political showmanship won't solve migration26:24: There are no easy solutions for complex migration problems. So that migration can cause problems in places where migrants concentrate, and not everybody is happy about it, particularly because employers reap the biggest benefits of their cheap labor—I can fully understand that. But the kind of solutions that politicians sell to us have more to do with bold acts of political showmanship than any really serious effort to control and manage migration.Migration is part of development15:07: We need a new paradigm, a new theory on migration—that migration is part of development. This is not about liking migration or not or denying that migration can also lead to tensions and problems. But if you deny that fundamental reality, you also see it in middle-income countries, where many governments have tried to stop or curb rural-to-urban migration. It has all failed. Are politicians in denial about the realities of migration?02:53: Both in the U.S., but also across the Atlantic in Europe, politicians have been basically in denial for over the last four to five decades about the realities of migration. That's the reason why these policies always fail. It's a lack of fundamental understanding of migration as a social and economic process that needs to be the foundation of any policy. The migration issue has been completely hijacked by politicians, with pro- and anti-migration debates that don't really engage with the realities of migration. That huge gap is really the problem.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Economist Michael Piore books Guest Profile:Faculty Profile at University of AmsterdamProfessional WebsiteHis Work:How Migration Really Works: The Facts About the Most Divisive Issue in Politics

«There is nothing more permanent than a temporary migrant. Don't create any illusions that a fair share of migrants in not going to stay», says sociologist Hein de Haas, in this episode of «It's Not That Simples», a podcast by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation. One of the most enlightened but also thought provocative voices of migrations, Hein de Haas explains that this hot topic of today is neither a phenomenon nor a novelty. «Migration is part and parcel of who we are as human beings, as a society», he explains, emphasizing that migratory movements have been taking place «for as long as humanity has existed». The difference lies in Europe's position in this chessboard, having shifted from being a point of departure (in colonialism or world wars) to being a continent where citizens from all over the world arrive.  Highlighting that it is impossible to stop this movement, the sociologist warns against the hypocrisy of policies that punish migrants instead of those who accept them illegally. «In the United States, the number of employers who are prosecuted each year for employing undocumented migrants is between 10 and 15 a year, with no zeros», he claims. «If you would really be serious as a politician when you say 'I want to combat smuggling, I want to combat illegal migration'... If you really want to do that, you better punish employers», Hein de Haas explains, adding that the lack of consequences for those who employ them fuels exploitation and abuse. Breaking down the false narratives on this issue - from the left, which sees immigrants as «victims and refugees», and from the right, which speaks of the threat of those who «arrive to steal jobs» - the expert believes that these discourses hide the real problem: the fact that «in Western Europe and the US, there is the biggest labor shortage ever, especially of low-skilled migrants».

From ‘Stop the Boats' to ‘Build the Wall', mass migration is the great upheaval of our times, opening a poisonous political divide. Will population movement really tip our world into chaos as the populists and far-right agitators warn? Will democracies have to choose between mass migration or low growth? Are hardliners like Italy's Meloni or Hungary's Orbán really cutting migration to their countries like they say? And what does “solving” migration even mean? Just days after Suella Braverman's incendiary Commons speech and Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick's theatrical resignation over the Rwanda policy, Gavin Esler looks for answers with Prof Hein de Haas, author of How Migration Really Works. • “Immigration is the price you pay for being a wealthy market economy. That's the bottom line.” • “Migration rhetoric is a vote-winner but it's very dishonest… We have to be aware of what politicians say and what they do.” • “The Rwanda policy is an act of desperation. It's been a huge failure and a political distraction.” Buy How Migration Really Works through our new affiliate bookshop and you'll help fund This Is Not A Drill by earning us a small commission for every sale. Bookshop.org's commission helps support independent bookshops too. Eloise de Haas: Fully Alive — The Lord's Redemption Paul wrote in Romans that God, ‘works all things together for the good.' The Psalmist declared, ‘I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.' But how could they say this in the midst of trouble? They trusted in the redemption of the Lord. This is not just the redemption of salvation, or the redemption that we will one day see in Heaven, but the redemptive power that works in our lives now. Redemption that gives beauty for ashes and joy for mourning. In this episode Eloise shares with Courtney and Lana about some real and raw times when she had to intentionally choose to lay down her ashes so God could turn it into beauty. The process is not always easy: sometimes you need to lay the same thing down again and again. In the end, it's important to remember that the grace and redemption of the Father is not dependent on us, but on Him.
