In 2024 both Ronnie Simpson and Bryan Fuller had an ocean adventure. Ronnie was solo sailing in a race around the world. Bryan doing one of the only Atlantic crossings from Boston to London in a rowboat. Neither event is simple or easy. Both men are experts. Each mission failed...and both boats were abandoned during their attempts. Bryan and Ronnie don't know one another, yet, they have much in commo. Ronnie returns for his second visit to the Break It Down Show with Pete A Turner. With Bryan Fuller the founder of Boarder Rowers and Power Rowing of Brookline Mass. Ronnie Simpson is a 39-year-old professional racing sailor from the United States of America who aims to sail in the 2028 Vendee Globe. Recently, Ronnie was the skipper of the Open 50 Shipyard Brewing which competed in the first-ever Global Solo Challenge in 2023-24. Sailing in a strong third place for most of the race, Ronnie unfortunately dismasted off of Argentina in February 2024 and Shipyard Brewing was lost at sea. Having completed 80% of a singlehanded racing circumnavigation and rounding all of the three great capes including Cape Horn, Ronnie's resolve to race the Vendee Globe is now only stronger.
So I successfully rode 75 miles on a single charge of my eBike battery (with a little bit of a top off!). What did I learn from the adventure and what does it mean for future trips with my ebike? eBike Range Test Takeaways 75ish miles is pretty great with a little top off… that's amazing for the C&O and other reasonably flat terrain! 1.Battery Management is Key •The ride underscored the importance of efficient battery use. Keeping the e-bike battery between 20% and 80% for everyday use is recommended, but for extended trips, charging to 100% proved essential. However, overuse of higher pedal-assist levels (like Level 3) quickly drained the battery, emphasizing the need to stick to lower levels (1 or 2) to maximize range. 2.Comfort Adjustments are Ongoing •Experimentation with the saddle and handlebars revealed that finding the right configuration for long rides is a process. While the new saddle and bar extensions offered some comfort, they weren't perfect, suggesting that further adjustments or a different saddle type (like a Brooks) may be needed for better ergonomics. 3.Weather and Trail Conditions Impact Performance •The dry, cool weather and improved trail conditions (like the newly paved Western Maryland Rail Trail) enhanced the ride experience. However, headwinds were a challenge, requiring adjustments in effort and assist levels to maintain speed. 4.Range and Effort Balance •The ride confirmed that the e-bike could cover about 70-75 miles on a single charge, with minimal hills and strategic use of pedal assist. This opens possibilities for long-distance touring with the addition of a second battery but highlighted that even with assist, significant physical effort is still required, particularly on longer rides. 5.Preparation and Redundancy are Crucial •While the ride was successful, minor issues like forgetting a bike lock, misplacing microphone components, and underestimating hydration needs pointed to the importance of thorough preparation. Carrying a spare battery, hydration supplies, and tools for adjustments proved beneficial. The ebike is absolutely in my plans for some adventures - Train and bike to/from DC - really anyplace but emphasis on east coast - Circumnavigation of Lake Ontario - More east coast greenway riding - Another segment of the cross country ride

Susie brings a few nominees to the Darwin Awards--one is a snake influencer (?) who said anit-venom was for p*ssies who then, of course, was bit by his pet viper and the other was a man who was observing a friend drink an assisted suicide drug cocktail and then decided to take a sip for himself. We learn about a man who circumnavigated the globe on foot instead of getting a divorce and the unbelievable events that he went through for this dubious distinction. We hear about a daydreaming contest that tests whether you can remain lost in your thoughts for 90 minutes. Susie describes a couple who waited 12 years for access to Disney's Club 33 only to lose access based on what they say was a misunderstanding. Hear the incredible lengths they're going to get back in and what it's like to be a member of this exclusive club to begin with. We find out how mail is processed in Antarctica and who is sending mail there. We learn why Hope Solo was ostracized from the women's professional soccer team. M. Scott Ault is a Calgary based artist, author and sporadic adventurer. He grew up in east- central Ontario and knew there was more "out there" than just what had been taught in books and through movies.. adventure and that it was sitting there.. waiting for him. All he had to do was reach out and grab it. Thus, one day he decided to give away nearly all his personal property and, armed with just a backpack and a cardboard sign, he was en route to... nothing short of Life, Immeasurable. In the years since he has meandered by various alternative methods including cycle touring around N. America and worked on his chosen art forms that include 3D soapstone sculpting, photography, and literature. He has, also, had to take on various forms of employment and has always been in "survival" mode. If one thing was a "take away" from him.. it would be to slow down and smell the roses. Instead of rushing head long in to a life that is more work than enjoyment he has always sought peace and tranquility. It is his hope that spending 24 months on the oceans of this planet will teach him more about this and reinforce his connection to her and he'd like to share that sense with as many people worldwide as possible. In S2Ep10 of the PRP, Adam parleys with seasoned ultra runner, metallurgical engineer, San Fransisco running connoisseur and ultimate adventurer Alex Hudgins who has been preparing for the Speedgoat 50K on July 23rd, 2022. Alex sheds light on his childhood and humbly admits that he is extremely lucky to have been exposed to the outdoors in a multitude of ways at a young age and credits his love for and confidence in nature to his parents. Although Alex throws down some insanely massive runs on the regs, the PRP listenership learns that he only caught the ultra bug in 2017. That being said his combination of XC experience at a collegiate level with his experience in the great outdoors have complimented each other well as he has truly began to blossom as an all around adventurer. Sam Kirk, small business owner, proud father of two and emerging ultra runner joins the show as guest host and offers his sharp-witted opinions on Alex and all things ultra running. Having just turned 40 and fathering two terrific toddlers, his view on the sport and his "why" have changed dramatically over the past few years and he offers some profound advice on how to be and remain happy by giving yourself grace when training and preparing for larger efforts. The two Lehigh University alums share some heartfelt insight into the vast world of Strava and provide insight on how they assemble their training blocks to ensure they're ready when it's time to rock. Alex shares his two main reasons for loving the sport - A) it has provided him with more confidence when navigating his day-to-day life B) no matter what the circumstance, at the end of a run, he's always happy. Alex's keen yet relaxed attitude towards racing and adventuring is truly refreshing and his pure love for spending time in nature shines bright throughout the 'sode. Ummm, car jacks & 50lbs TV stands? Why is Alex's family so damn cool?! Why does the ultra bug burn so deep? What is the Circumnavigation of Mt. Hood? What about the Wonderland Trail around Rainier? Are the cereal box days long gone?! 1st class?!? What the heck is Cali carpet?? KETCHUP?!? Buckle up for this & loads more in this encouraging and exciting episode of the PRP! Originally aired on October 29, 2018Alex is not your typical 18 years old. Instead of setting out to trade school, college, or hanging out at home after the summer of high school graduation, Alex decided he wanted to do something adventurous to transition into this new phase of life called adulthood. That desire led him to kayak 1,750 km around the edges of Lake Winnipeg, something incredibly daunting considering the remoteness of much of the lake as well as the unpredictable weather.Alex is incredibly articulate for his age and understands that this trip was an amazing opportunity to show the world the importance of keeping resources like Lake Winnipeg free of pollution, invasive species, and a refuge for the human soul. He's already an experienced adventurer and we're super excited that Alex joined us for this interview as we're sure he'll be an even bigger name in the outdoor community very soon.lakewinnipegcircumnavigation.com/about-alexInstagram @alex.marrtinAlexmartinphotography.myportfolio.comDo you want to take charge of your health and wellness and have better sleep, more energy, and a healthier immune system? Just over two years later, the teams are back in the Philippines to finish the lap. In this episode we are honored to be talking with Sir Robin Knox-Johnston (yes, that Sir Robin) who is among many things the brainchild behind The Clipper Race and Mark Light, who completed his own lap back in the 2012 Clipper Race and is now the race's director. In addition to being a cruiser, Amy is also an author and she writes for sailing magazines as well as a series of romance novels. And where does she get the inspiration for her travel themed novels? From the cruising life, of course! Links mentioned in this episode ⬇️
When Dustin Reynolds, also known as The Single-Handed Sailor, pulled into his home port on the Big Island of Hawaii last December, he became the newest member one of the most exclusive maritime clubs, sailing alone around the world. With a membership around 300 sailors, this achievement is made even more remarkable considering that he is a double amputee: the result of a horrific motorcycle accident in 2008. Dustin's endeavor is an incredible example of resilience, perseverance, and adaptation. Take a listen!
