On today’s episode, I’m joined by Garrett Madison, a world-record holding mountain climber and Mount Everest guide-extraordinaire. His records include being the only person to climb Mount Everest and nearby Mount Lhotse in a day, three times; being the only American to climb K2 twice; and he has personally led more climbers to the summits of Mount Everest and K2 than anyone else. Together, Garrett and I talk about his career, following your passion, and leadership. Garrett’s passion for mountain climbing began when he was in high school, and he and his dad decided they wanted to climb Mount Rainier. After preparing for the climb, Garrett realized he wanted to continue to learn more, so he enrolled in more mountaineering classes, and in college, he was hired as a Mount Rainier guide. While Garrett thought it would be a fun summer job, he then ended up making it into a career as a fulltime mountain guide expedition leader. Garrett explains that his job comes with a number of different rewards, and that while the records he holds are great, his favorite parts of the job are simply getting to spend time in the mountains and helping others to achieve their bucket-list goals. He shares that the first time he made it to the summit of Everest, it was a really emotional experience and that helping other climbers reach that summit and sharing in that experience with them is both special and very rewarding. As someone who people trust to lead them up mountains and navigate them through the difficulties of the journey, Garrett also talks to listeners about leadership. He shares with them an experience in which he and his team ended up getting stuck on Everest after an earthquake and how in experiences such as this, the most important actions a leader can take are: handle things moment by moment, look out for the people around you, and keep calm. Finally, Garrett ends our talk today by encouraging those who are listening to follow their hearts. As someone who never had a roadmap for his own career, Garrett advises following your passion and believing that things will work themselves out from there. In addition to his work as a guide, he also then goes on to discuss his work as a film producer, writer, and his future goal of becoming a sailor. To hear more about some of Garrett’s incredible expeditions, his favorite climbs, and how to prepare for your own climbing adventure or expedition, be sure to listen in to today’s episode! Garrett Maroon shares how he created a wildly successful business by referral by focusing on building strong relationships within his community. Garrett is the owner of The Maroon Group, founder of Business By Referral & co-host of The Real Estate Your Way podcast, & he is proof that a large database is not the only path to success in sales. While Garrett's focus is real estate, his techniques, systems and methodology can be a guide for any business owner or entrepreneur, no matter the industry. "We live in a connection and experiential economy. Over 92% of millennials will choose a referral over anything else. This generation wants to believe in the purpose of the company, so your business has to be missionary. " Garrett Maroon Episode Highlights: Kara introduces Garrett Maroon, President and Co-Founder of Business By Referral and Founder of The Maroon Group with Keller Williams in Newport News, VA. Garrett shares his own soul inspired journey that led him to an unlikely career in real estate. Since Garrett was not originally from Newport News, he did not know a large amount of people when he entered real estate, and was advised that he would need to cold call people to be successful. Garrett decided to abandon the "cold calling" advice, and build his business by referral...a decision that brought him more joy in his business. In building his business by referral, he realized he needed to create better systems to stay in touch with his clients and customers. Ultimately, he had to figure out a system so that his clients and customers would think of him when they thought of real estate. He didn’t reinvent the wheel in business, but rather, figured out a model that made sense for him. If your heart is there to serve at a high level, you can build a good business by caring for people. Garrett offers important insights about mindset, and has discovered the best way to build relationships is becoming curious. In his opinion, becoming deeply curious about others allows you to completely tune in to the needs of others. The consistent action of building relationships is going to get you a consistent business. After conducting many trainings around the country, Garrett realized that there was a need for better systems around staying in touch with past clients. On each episode of National Geographic's Diggers, metal detector hobbyists Tim “The Ringmaster” Saylor and his friend “King George” Wyant traverse the United States in search of buried treasure. But treasure means different things to different people, says Saylor, who sat down with host Sean Heath for this episode of Discover the Truth by Garrett Metal Detectors. "I'm one of the very few lucky ones that make a living off this, but I don't make a living off the things I find," he said. "I would be doing this whether or not I was on television because I do it for the love of it. This is about the thrill of the hunt and the sport of hunting." But learning a sport takes time, Saylor advised. "Don't be intimidated. Do what you want and you'll get alot out of the sport," he said. While Garrett has a range of products that vary from nearly "plug and play" models that make it easy for novices to get started in the sport, veteran detectors find more as they become more acquainted with the features and technology. "We know our machines forwards and backwards. We can sense what's going on just by what we're hearing," Saylor said. "But there's so much garbage in the ground that you have to learn how to interpret each little tweak to know what's bad, what's good, and what's iffy." Among Saylor's favorite finds are an 22k solid gold mourning ring dated 1744 with an amethyst stone (the "greatest ring I've ever found in my life", according to him).

In this podcast Garrett does a quick review of all of the boots he has used for whitetail hunting over the past several years. Some boots have served as great all around options for scouting, turkey hunting, and western hunting in addition to whitetails, while others are very specific use. The boots reviewed in this podcast share a similarity. None of them are rubber. That isn't to say that rubber boots are inferior - certainly they have their place. That being said, there are lace up options that many whitetail hunters overlook because of reasons such as scent control that can really be great options due to their support, weight, and breathability. One important characteristic of boots for the later whitetail systems is insulation and warmth. While Garrett has packed in heavy pack boots to change into at the tree, he also believes there can be better options to have insulated feet without dealing with moisture from sweat on the walk in.

While Garrett was taking his Lamborghini in to get serviced, he needed his son to follow him to the dealership so that he had a ride back while it was getting tightened. After a few minutes of getting to the dealership, he realized that this would be a perfect opportunity for Parker to drive the Aventador himself, and so he gave him the keys and was able to see a mirror of the enjoyment that he feels on a regular basis driving his dream car. It also made him realize that sometimes we experience even greater joy in seeing others enjoyment than going through the experience ourselves.
