Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Zoro, World Renowned Drummer, Author, “Maria's Scarf” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Zoro, is a world-renowned rock, R&B, and hip-hop drummer, who is widely referred to as “the minister of groove."    He has spent over 4 decades performing with many music superstars including Lenny Kravitz, New Edition, Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, Bobby Brown, Sean Lennon, Lisa Marie Presley, French superstar Vanessa Paradis and Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind & Fire.  He's been voted the number one R&B drummer in the world numerous times by Modern Drummer Magazine and Drum Magazine.   He's also a highly accomplished author of 4 books about music: “The Commandments of R&B Drumming”, “The Commandments of Early Rhythm and Blues Drumming”, “The Big Gig: Big Picture Thinking for Success”, and “The Commandments of the Half-Time Shuffle”.  In addition, he is an immensely influential and inspirational educator and motivator, with a passion for helping people achieve their potential and attain success.  He's the author of a highly popular book entitled, “SOAR: 9 Proven Keys for Unlocking Your Limitless Potential”.    And today, he's here to talk about his brand new book, which I absolutely loved, entitled, “Maria's Scarf: A Memoir of a Mother's Love, a Son's Perseverance, and Dreaming Big”.  This is an incredibly heartfelt and heart wrenching autobiography, chronicling our guest's tumultuous journey as the fatherless, bi-racial child of a Mexican immigrant single mother, who somehow managed to raise her 7 children in an atmosphere of love, courage, faith, tenacity and optimism.  From the impoverished and notorious streets of Compton in South-Central Los Angeles, to the harsh realities of rural Oregon - this is a man who, thanks to his mother's many sacrifices and unbreakable resilience, overcame countless almost insurmountable obstacles of abject poverty, racism and adversity.   He was an insecure little boy who grew up longing for the love and approval of an absent father, and struggling with identity, self-worth and craving a sense of belonging.  Thanks to the love and guidance of his mother, and the unshakable bonds that kept his family together, he ultimately harnessed and channelled his pain, anguish and ambition, together with his love of music and rhythm, to become one of the world's most successful and respected drummers.  This book is so poignant, so uplifting and inspirational, that I just HAD to invite the author, Zoro to our show. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To learn more about Zoro, go to:https://zorothedrummer.com/http://www.facebook.com/zorothedrummermusichttps://instagram.com/zorothedrummer/http://www.twitter.com/zorothedrummerhttp://www.youtube.com/superfunkyfan #Zoro    #harveybrownstoneinterviews

N. Guenka (Meditation Teacher) Effect On Emotions I have that observer within me that watches things rising and falling out falling now for a while. For many years in my life, I thought that mindfulness was so that we didn't have to feel our emotions anymore. We didn't have to be in that, I realized, is an ignorance within us. We're supposed to feel fully. But if I feel sorrow fully, but I don't say I am a sad person. It's two different things. Do I identify with the emotions? Or do I allow myself to feel it fully? Thoughts On Breathing Breathing is the great gift. The deep breath, the holding of the breath, the holding the bottom of the breath; all of those are wonderful techniques for us to turn on our parasympathetic nervous system to quiet the mind to let the body know it's safe. So the thoughts of fear that are constantly rising from our physicality, quiet down, and we can access that awareness underneath all the thoughts.   Bullying Story I was bullied in junior high school, I grew very quickly. I was five feet eight inches tall in junior high school. And I was the tallest student and was taller than some of my teachers. I was gawky and had goofy hair. So I came from an elementary school where I was the president of the Student Council was kind of this celebrated person. And then I got into junior high school and got bullied by other girls. It was very painful and a big shock to me that people were cruel that way. And I retreated into myself and so, you know, that stays with you. It's fear, right? Fear of judgment. I think around that time that internal negative voice became a megaphone within me. And it's been something I've fought and tried to understand through my whole life. Now, do I see a benefit of that experience? Quite a bit. It drove me to understanding myself in psychology and spiritual practice. When you can feel another's pain, you can't bully them. And, and when you're bullied, you can see I can look at those girls, and I can see what they were afraid of. I can see where it was coming from. it. It opens empathy. It's only compassion that problems would solve. Suggested Resources Books: Anything by Alan Watts and Robert Thurman Book: Bhagavad Gita As It Is by A. C. The Unstarving Musician

This episode features Mike Dawson on dynamics, creative recording, getting gigs and more. It's the first ever rewind episode of the Unstarving Musician, based on episode one of the podcast. In rewind episodes I'm digging deep into past conversations to further mine insights. The hope is that I'll uncover insights that were perhaps lost in our collective note taking. This is of course intended to serve music professionals like you. Mike is the former managing editor at Modern Drummer Magazine. He is now Chief Creative Officer at Drum Factory Direct. He's also host of the Drum Candy podcast, described as the definitive podcast for gear-obsessed drummers. His education includes a Masters in Music Performance from University of the Arts Philadelphia, music studies at West Virginia University and many years of high school band. His education is a relevant part of our conversation, and I believe very relevant to who he is professionally.  Mike has had a great career performing in the music business, in part thanks to his education. But don't be discouraged if you lack formal music education. Mike also says that among his peers, about half are self-taught.  I am in fact self-taught and have always  been able to play when, where and with whom I want. And that comes with the other part of being like Mike, the part that involves keeping relationships alive and working on your craft. Mike and I also discuss dynamics, something I learned thanks to the bit of formal education that I do have. Mike shares about the importance his education had on dynamics and why it matters. The skill of dynamics seems to be lost on lots of otherwise good musicians–drummers especially. All musicians benefit from developing good dynamics and by learning how to lead a band in dynamic changes. It's hard to find musicians who can play quietly and with a good sense of dynamics. So give yourself a leg-up by working on your dynamics and on leading other musicians dynamic changes. Mike also talks about his passion for anything that's authentic and emotional. He was working on a few different projects of varying styles when we spoke. These varied projects presented challenges that Mike really enjoyed at the time. I'm sure he still pursuing a wide variety of passion projects today. This speaks to the value of being a diverse musician and being open to trying new things for the sake of a challenge, and for the sake of personal growth in your art. Diversity and discipline have allowed Mike to work in a wide range professional gigs. Mike and I also cover his passion for recording and experimentation in the studio. He loves the art of recording. It's even become his morning meditation of exploration and creative practice. This practice allows him to create something new almost daily. Mike shares his recipe for nurturing and leveraging his creativity. One important aspect of Mike's mornings is that he looked at the limits of his schedule and made the decision to work in early morning creative time. It's Mike's way of starting the day in a creatively productive way. Other topics we discuss include his self-care routine, marketing, social media trolls and business tips.
