In 2023, award-winning investigative journalist Brandi Kellam published "Uprooted,” a collaboration between ProPublica and the Virginia Center for Investigative Journalism at WHRO. The series revealed how American universities expanded campuses while systematically displacing Black and marginalized communities. It exposed historic injustices as well as the present-day consequences of university-led displacement. The investigation helped spur the creation of a Virginia legislative commission now exploring potential redress. It also sparked the creation of a local Newport News task force to examine the role Christopher Newport University played in displacing dismantling a historic Black community over the last 60 years. Kellam updates us on the state and local investigations and what steps will be taken to right a wrong.

Our country owes a lot of gratitude to the generation of men and women who were the Founders of this country and wrote its founding documents. Too often we forget they were walking in uncharted territory: they were the first group of colonies to successfully break away from an empire, we were the first post-colonial country and the first nation founded on moral principles. What they accomplished was unprecedented. Today, we examine the role of the Second Continental Congress in achieving this success. To explain why he calls them the “greatest generation,” we are pleased to welcome Jeffry Morrison, Professor of American Studies at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia, and Director of Academics at the federal government's James Madison Foundation in Alexandria, Virginia.

In 2016, a long-haul trucker and his wife — a night-shift nurse expecting their first child — moved into a modest three-bedroom house just outside Newport News, Virginia. The home was bright, only fifteen years old, and seemed perfect for starting their family… until the first weekend. While painting the nursery closet, he heard slow, deliberate footsteps overhead in the empty loft. A few weeks later came flickering lights, quick camera-like flashes in the corners of their eyes, and what sounded like muffled voices upstairs when no one was home. After their baby arrived, the upstairs began to feel heavy and oppressive at night. One early-morning wake-up changed everything: at 3 A.M., the couple heard the glow of the husband's sleeping laptop screen and the unmistakable sound of keys slowly tapping — tap… tap-tap… tap. Grabbing a flashlight, he crept up the stairs. The typing stopped the moment he stepped into the loft. The desk chair turned slowly on its own, then faced him and went still. Was it stress, imagination… or something trying to communicate through the keyboard? #TrueHaunting #LoftHaunting #RealGhostStory #HauntedHouse #ParanormalActivity #TypingInTheDark #HauntedNursery #NewportNewsHaunting #RealParanormal #CreepyTrueStories Love real ghost stories? On July 12, 1994, 19-year old Steven Smith was killed after being struck by a single bullet to the head in Newport News, VA. Within weeks three individuals, two teenage boys, and one in his twenties, were arrested for the crime. Darryl Hunter, his older brother Nathaniel Pierce, and his friend Reginald Fletcher, were each tried and convicted solely on witness testimony. They were sentenced collectively to over 200 years in prison. Since then, a dozen witnesses have recanted, claiming that the government coerced them to testify against the Virginia 3.
