Send us a textThe SS United States once sailed mightily across the Atlantic. She set the transatlantic sailing speed record , which still stands today, only using 2/3 of her power. She was once majestic, powerful, and one of the most luxurious vessels of its time. But time has passed. The jet airplane cut transatlantic travel from days to hours. The need for such sea faring vessels disappeared and with in just a few short years the SS United States was mothballed, her furnishings sold, her interior gutted, and she sat at port for a half century as the elements took their toll. She is now headed for Florida to become an artificial underwater reef. A project that will almost certainly rejuvenate life into this lonely vessel at the bottom of the sea. As we commemorate the SS United States historic place on the high seas and watch her slow sail from Philadelphia to Mobile, Alabama to be prepared for sinking. We thought now was a perfect time to reflect on it all as we watch her final sail before she sinks into history and moves on to its new chapter under the sea. Title: Languaging in Hampton RoadsEpisode 14: Voices of Faith in Hampton RoadsHosts: Jill Winkowski and Prue SalaskyDate: March 5, 2025Length: 48:50Publication Frequency: Fourth Friday (approx) of each monthIn this episode we interview several pastors, all first-generation immigrants, who minister to their flocks in the native language of their country of origin. The interviews are with Pastor Echo Lin from the Shanghai region of mainland China, who leads services in Mandarin at the more than 100-year-old independent First Chinese Baptist Church in Virginia Beach; Father Joseph Nguyen who ministers to two Catholic Vietnamese congregations, Our Lady of LaVang Catholic Church in Norfolk, and Our Lady of Vietnam Catholic Church in Hampton ; and with Luke Do, Senior Pastor of Peninsula Korean Baptist Church in Newport News.(We also talked to Pastor Trung Phan, leader of Hope Vietnamese Church in Annandale, Va. Time and geographical constraints meant we weren't able to include his interview; we will run it as bonus material at a future date.)From our interviews, we learned about the changing role of the church in each community, the importance of language for identity, the generational rifts as assimilation occurs -- and what the future of ethnic-centered churches might be as globalization and technology reduce differences. We did not address the use of traditional liturgical languages, such as Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, and Koine Greek, all of which are represented in Hampton Roads. Nor did we cover the multiple Spanish-speaking churches, by far the largest segment of non-English services in the region. Instead, we focused primarily on Asian-led churches that minister to their communities through the use of the vernacular. In talking to ministers at Korean, Vietnamese and Chinese churches we learned not only about immigration patterns in the region, but also the ealier history of colonization and missionary activity. We learned in many cases that faith was secondary to a sense of community and cultural belonging. Our interest in the topic was sparked by a sign for the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, Mehane Hiwot Abune Gebre Menfes Kidus, in the Park Place neighborhood of Norfolk . We learned that the Norfolk church, started in 2013, is part of one of the most ancient branches of Christianity, part of the Coptic tradition dating back to 300 AD. Priest Teshome Yohannes Feleke presides over a congregation of 200 drawn from throughout Hampton Roads. Services are in a combination of Ge'ez, the ancient liturgical language, and Amharic, Ethiopia's everyday language that evolved from it. (Plug in the church's name to find beautiful chanting on YouTube.) The church is celebrating its renovation with a grand re-opening on March 14/15.We also discovered Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Norge, which once held services in Norwegian. Today the language is no longer used, but the church is the proud possessor of a Norwegian Bible donated by Norway's royal family in 1939. We also learned that Norge is actually the name for Norway in Norwegian, a tribute to its original Scandinavian settlers at the turn of the 20th century! As you can gather, it's a very rich topic and we only scratched the surface of the Babel of languages used in worship in our Hampton Roads region. Please send your questions and feedback to languagingHR@gmail.com

On today's episode, I talk to illustrator and comics creator Brian Blomerth. Brian grew up in Newport News, Virginia, and in college started to move towards making art for a living. Some of his early work was for Vice, as well as making tour posters for bands like Phish or album artwork for musicians like Ryley Walker. Since 2019, he's been working on a series of books about 20th century psychonauts starting with Bicycle Day, about the discovery of LSD, and the follow-up, Mycelium Wassonii, about the scientist couple responsible for popularizing the use of psychedelic mushrooms in the US. His most recent book, Lilly Wave, about the life of scientist and psychedelic dolphin tormentor John C. Lilly, came out in October, and it's a delight! In the early morning hours of September 14, 1982, a man broke into a home in Newport News, Virginia and beat 30-year-old Jesse Perron to death with a crowbar. Then, over several hours, the attacker sexually assaulted Perron’s 22-year-old wife, Teresa, leaving bite marks during the assaults. Teresa and Jesse Perron’s home was located near the shipyard where the U.S.S. Carl Vinson was harbored and where Perron worked as a welder. Over several months bite mark impressions were taken from hundreds of sailors on the Carl Vinson. Police had no suspects at that time. Keith Harward had been among those whose teeth were examined in the immediate aftermath of the investigation, but he had been ruled out as the source of the bitemarks on Teresa by a civilian dental consultant working with the Newport News City medical examiner. When Harward came to court, Teresa was there, but could not identify him as the attacker. After police asked Harward to submit to a second procedure to perform bite mark analysis, they determined that Keith’s bite marks matched the ones found on Teresa. Harward was subsequently convicted of capital murder, rape, robbery and burglary and sentenced to life in prison. Are you a “can't stop, won't stop” kind of person? Is Christmas stressing you out? Christmas- it's supposed to be a season of celebrating the birth of Jesus. It's a time of peace and love. But let's be real: it's also a season loaded with expectations. Some of those expectations are self-induced, while others come from family and friends. But here's the good news: the grind doesn't have to steal your Christmas. In the Bible, we see Mary prioritizing relationships and savoring the moment while her sister, Martha, was focused on work. This week, we'll hear the finale of “The _____ That Stole Christmas, Part 4: Grind”, exploring how the grind can impact your faith. Join us this week as we learn how to shift our focus away from being busy to truly cherishing the season- prioritizing what matters most over the “work”. #TheBlankThatStoleChristmas #ChangeTheWay #WatersEdgeChurchCome visit us online or in-person at one of our campuses in Yorktown, VA, or Newport News, VA! Last week, we observed the first yahrzeit (anniversary of a death) of Dr. David Ellenson -- past president of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, past provost of that institution, a professor at that institution for a generation – a teacher, a theologian, a historian of Jewish ideas, a world class thinker. Someone said that “David was always the smartest person in the room, and he never let you remember that.” If you could look up the word mensch in a dictionary, you would see David's photograph. You could meet him and never know he possessed one of the greatest Jewish minds of this generation. Simple, unpretentious, a man who made everyone feel that he was a member of their family. A man who passionately loved his own family, especially his wife, Rabbi Jacqueline Koch Ellenson, and their children, several of whom have followed David and Jackie into the rabbinate. David and I were friendly for more than fifty years; our kids are friends; our grandchildren are friends. Three generations of friendship in one family. It does not get any better than that. Please check out the podcast that we recorded in his memory. It features: Professor Arnold Eisen – former president of Jewish Theological Seminary. Rabbi Michael Marmur – associate professor of Jewish theology at HUC-JIR, Jerusalem, who had served as the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Provost at HUC-JIR, having previously been Dean of the Jerusalem campus. Elisheva Urbas – editorial director, Hadar -- an editor, writer, translator, coach, and teacher. We took a deep dive into David's life -- beginning with his formative years in the Orthodox community in Newport News, Virginia. We discussed how David's Southern Orthodox Jewish boyhood shaped him -- making him sensitive to what it means to be a cultural stranger, and imbuing within him an infectious love for clal Yisrael -- the entirety of the Jewish people.

**What are you believing God for in 2025?**What would happen if you “stepped up”?Stepping forward and taking a risk can feel daunting, right? Yet this is exactly what God calls us to do. Without faith, it's impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6) In the Bible, Peter boldly stepped up with the eleven apostles, raised his voice to the crowd, and preached. The apostles stood with him, and God moved powerfully through them. When we stand together and step forward in faith, there's no limit to what God can do. This week, we conclude our “Heart for the House” series with Part 4, “They Stepped Up.” Pastor Stu will inspire us with stories from the Bible and modern times, showing how God uses those willing to step up to advance His mission. We have an amazing opportunity to put our faith into action, believing that God is going to use our obedience to reach even more people for Jesus. Don't miss this transformative message about faith, trust, and the incredible things God can do when we "step up". #HeartForTheHouse #ChangeTheWay #WatersEdgeChurchCome visit us online or in-person at one of our campuses in Yorktown, VA, or Newport News, VA! Pastor Stu will share four key reasons why we invite you to give beyond your regular tithe during this season, and how this step of faith can impact your spiritual journey in meaningful ways.#HeartForTheHouse #ChangeTheWay #WatersEdgeChurchCome visit us online or in-person at one of our campuses in Yorktown, VA, or Newport News, VA!
