Jason and Derek discuss the origins of one of Lamborghini's most iconic models: the Diablo. And what makes this 1 of 83 GT edition so special. === The Carmudgeon Show Sponsor, Vredestein Tires: https://www.vredestein.com/ Click here to join the Hagerty Driver's Club: https://bit.ly/Join-HDC-Cammisa-Rev === Prior to recording this episode, Jason's Diablo-experience was limited to a blue VT he drove as part of a V12 Lamborghini story back in 2012 that included a 1972 Miura SV, 1988 Countach 5000 QV, Murciélago, Aventador, and LM002. Luckily for Jason (and all of us,) Derek – who also recently drove a Diablo Roadster – brought along this spectacular orange Diablo GT (one of just 83 ever built), which both he and Jason took for a spin. Their impressions followed after a brief history lesson courtesy of Derek. The history lesson will include the origin of Lamborghini itself at the hands of multiple different owners: Ferruccio Lamborghini, Jean-Claude and Patrick Mimran, and Chrysler, which took over just as the Diablo concept was nearly production ready. Luckily for everyone, legendary designer at Bertone, Marcello Gandini, didn't throw his hands up and walk off the job, and we got the Diablo (and the non-Chrysler-tainted early designs went on to become the Cizeta-Moroder V16T). But it was the 90s, and we demanded more! So the motorsport-focused Diablo GT was born. Featuring widened front fenders, a carbon-fiber rear diffuser, carbon-fiber bucket seats, oil cooler w/ heat extractor hood vent, and a roof scoop to direct cold air into the massive carbon-fiber intake plenum feeding independent throttle bodies – and much, much more! Like all Diablos, the interior is a little kit-car spec. A flat bezel with holes carved into it for individual gauges comprises the main “cluster.” The suspension is ultra-stiff, but handles exceptionally well on smooth tarmac. And the car can effortlessly break traction at both near-idle RPMs and at near-triple-digit speeds. Rear visibility is non-existent (there is effectively no rear window), but boy are you visible to everyone else on the road. Before we wrap things up, we talk crankshafts and who made the first modern flat-plane crank for a production V-8. Perhaps it's the Urraco and not the Ferrari 308? Ford's contemporary flat-plane crank Voodoo V-8 from the Shelby GT350 is known to shake itself to pieces. Is that par for the course? Chevy's C8 Z06 Corvette seems to be doing just fine. As are the AMG GT Blacks Series and Aston Martin Valhalla, but does anyone care? Cars like the new Revuelto and Temerario are more common than ever these days. And the number of people who stand a chance of someday affording them seems to be dwindling. Do you care about these million-dollar super cars? Or would you rather see more $35,000 challenges with cars like the Mini Cooper S, Hyundai Elantra N, Ford Mustang Ecoboost, Mazda3 Turbo, VW GTI, Subaru WRX, and Toyota GR86 in 2025? Lamborghini has turned out to be everything Ferruccio didn't want it to be — and thank heavens. What started out as the Ultimate Grudge Match against Enzo Ferrari created some of the most outrageous cars ever made. === Click here to join the Hagerty Driver's Club: https://bit.ly/Join-HDC-Cammisa-Rev === This episode covers the history of Lamborghini — from Ferruccio's infamous clash with Enzo Ferrari over a slipping clutch, through the Miura, Coutach, LM002, Diablo, Murciélago, Aventador — and the lesser-known models like the Urraco and the front-engined Islero, Jarama, Espada, et al. Oh, and the Lamborghini Urus. And of course, we discuss the now-late, great designer, Marcello Gandini — who designed so many of Lamborghini's most beautiful cars. Is Lamborghini the best driving supercar, Lamborghini cars, such as the Huracán and Aventador models, are celebrated for their: Exhilarating Performance: Lamborghinis are synonymous with high-performance engines, lightning-fast acceleration, and top speeds that can leave adrenaline junkies craving for more. Striking Design: The avant-garde and futuristic designs of Lamborghinis are a spectacle on their own. The sleek lines, aggressive stance, and distinctive aesthetic make them stand out in any crowd. Innovative Technology: Lamborghini incorporates cutting-edge technology into their vehicles, from advanced suspension systems to state-of-the-art infotainment. This enhances both the driving experience and overall comfort. Exclusivity and Prestige: Owning a Lamborghini is not just about driving; it's about the prestige associated with the brand. The exclusivity and rarity of these vehicles contribute to their allure. However, other supercar manufacturers, such as Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren, and Bugatti, also boast exceptional offerings. Each brand has its unique approach to design, engineering, and performance. Some may prioritize track-focused precision, while others may emphasize luxury and comfort alongside speed. Factors influencing the "best" supercar for you might include: Driving Experience: Some prefer the raw and visceral driving experience of a Lamborghini, while others may appreciate the more refined and precise feel of a Ferrari. Intended Use: Consider whether you prioritize daily drivability, track performance, or a balance of both. Some supercars excel in specific environments. Design Preferences: Aesthetics play a significant role. Lamborghinis are known for their bold and extravagant designs, but personal taste varies. Brand Loyalty: Some enthusiasts have a deep loyalty to a particular brand due to its history, racing heritage, or personal connections. Budget: Supercars can be a substantial investment, so your budget will inevitably influence your options. Ultimately, whether Lamborghini is the best driving supercar for you depends on your individual preferences, priorities, and driving style. It's recommended to test-drive multiple models, compare specifications, and assess your own preferences before making a decision. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carexamer/message

I mixed a bowl of goodness this week. I dive into how KIA is becoming a leader in car design with the new EV9, Ferrari getting test drives out for its SUV, which I am excited about, and Lamborghini giving us a sneak preview of the future of the Aventador replacement. Also, the time I and my son spent at the Super Lap Battle Time Attack event (Youtube video @CarQuicks on that)... sit back and enjoy!
The Lamborghini LB744 is the internal designation for the Aventador successor, and its new V12 hybrid powertrain is revealed ahead of a full debut later this month. We discuss some interesting camper conversions such as a Chevy Camaro with a bed and sink, and a two-story semi-truck RV with its own theater room. Dramatic video catches thieves stealing six Dodge Challenger Hellcats from a dealership, and we hold a cheap car challenge for cool camping vehicles.

The Lamborghini Aventador has finally reached the end of the road. Launching in 2011, the Aventador jumped to the top of Lamborghini's lineup and has provided the bones for some of the company's most outlandish machines. Though the days for the V12-powered Lamborghini seem to be numbered and the Aventador is going by the wayside. Sending the Aventador off in style, Lamborghini is unleashing the LP 780-4. While that shows its horsepower in CV, the power figure becomes 769 hp in SAE. That power comes from a 6.5-liter, naturally aspirated V12. That V12's power travels through a seven-speed automatic and through the all-wheel-drive system. In this episode of Quick Spin, Mark Vaughn puts the final Aventador through its paces. Vaughn walks you around the LP 780-4 and highlights some of its styling features before taking you inside to describe the interior. Vaughn then takes you out on a live drive review of this Lamborghini. Expanding on his thoughts, Vaughn chats about the 2022 Lamborghini Aventador LP780-4 with host Wesley Wren. The pair talk about the Aventador's history, Lamborghini's future and more. Closing the show, the two discuss what makes the 2022 Lamborghini Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae special.

The Aventador is coming to the end of its production run as Lamborghini electrifies its entire line-up. But intent to go out with a bang, the Italian supercar builder is selling the last ever Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae Coupé as a 1/1 NFT to be auctioned at Sotheby's. Aventador NFT is Lamborghini's last hurrah for petrol power The Lamborghini drop will be the world's first NFT-physical supercar auction. Responsible for creating the NFT artwork and music are contemporary artists Krista Kim and Steve Aoki. In describing her artistic inspiration for the project, Kim spoke of “higher states of consciousness” meeting with “leading-edge technology & design.” While Aoki, who was tasked with the soundtrack, said the music reflects the “soulful energy — the vibe, the spirit, and the power” of the car. Not only will the winning bidder own the last ever V12 petrol-powered Aventador, but they will also become immortalized as part of the brand's legacy and have access to a range of VIP benefits. This includes exclusive virtual previews of future limited edition Lamborghini models, a private tour of the Museo Lamborghini, and a virtual “Meet and Greet” with Aoki and Kim. The CEO of Lamborghini, Stephan Winkelmann, alluded to the NFT auction concept being an ideal way to usher in a new beginning for the firm. “we are projecting this car into the digital world. It's an end of an era, but it's also the start of a new beginning.” The death of the internal combustion engine The European Commission (EC) is set on introducing a zero-emissions target for vehicles sold after 2035. Commenting on this, Hildegard Müller, Head of Germany's VDA car lobby group said: “That would not only mean the end of the internal combustion engine, but also the end of plug-in hybrids.” Although insiders had warned the EC was planning such a move before the announcement was made in June 2021, it still came as something of a surprise. Electric cars, and their associated infrastructure, have a long way to go in terms of rivaling the convenience of filling up with petrol. Also, how would people who live in flats, or have no parking directly outside their property, charge their electric vehicles? The EC seems to be ignoring the devastating environmental and social effects of mining for battery minerals. For example, Congolese miners describe slave-like working conditions and practices as they dig for cobalt, earning as little as 30p ($0.40) an hour. Also, locals report contaminated water supply due to the use of large amounts of groundwater to extract lithium. Nonetheless, Lamborghini, and other manufacturers, are falling in line with the EC and pushing for all-electric line-ups. Bidding for the Aventador NFT drop opens on April 19, with the auction set to close on April 21.
