A year after they last saw one another, Prince William and his brother Prince Harry put their fraught relationship aside as they said farewell to their grandfather at his funeral on Saturday in the UK.The brothers were sombre and silent as they walked together in a procession behind Prince Philip's coffin before his funeral at Windsor Castle along with their father, Prince Charles, and other close relatives. They were seen chatting and walking together after the service concluded. It was the first time the brothers had been together in public since Harry stood down from royal duties and moved to the U.S. with his wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and their son Archie in early 2020.Tensions between Harry, 36, and William, 38, came to the fore after Harry and Meghan gave a revealing interview to U.S. talk show host Oprah Winfrey last month. The couple portrayed the royal family as indifferent to Meghan's mental health struggles, and Harry described his relationship with William as "space at the moment."On Saturday, William and Harry walked in silence on either side of their cousin, Peter Phillips, as they joined other senior royals in Philip's funeral procession. At one point Phillips fell behind slightly to allow the brothers to walk side by side — a visual echo of the moment the pair, as boys in 1997, walked behind the coffin of their mother Princess Diana in another royal funeral televised around the world. The brothers sat opposite each other in St. George's Chapel for the funeral, which was attended by only 30 people because of coronavirus restrictions. While William sat next to his wife Kate, Harry was on his own because Meghan is pregnant with their second child and was advised by her doctor not to make the long trip.Afterwards, Harry, William and Kate strolled together outside the chapel. Moments later, the brothers walked together alone while Kate spoke to Zara Tindall, another of Queen Elizabeth II's eight grandchildren who is William and Harry's cousin.Rumors of a rift between the brothers — William, the heir, and Harry, the "spare" — have rumbled at least since 2019. That's when Harry and Meghan separated from the Royal Foundation, originally set up as the brothers' joint charitable venture, to set up their own platform. That year, Harry said he loved his brother dearly but they were "on different paths" and have "good days" and "bad days."Many believe that William was angered and hurt by Harry's decision to speak so publicly about the royal family's issues during the Winfrey interview. In one explosive allegation, they said a family member — not the queen or Philip — had expressed "concerns" about Archie's possible skin color before he was born. Meghan has a Black mother and a white father.Days after the interview aired, William insisted "we are very much not a racist family," and said he had not spoken to Harry since the broadcast. It's unclear whether the passing of their grandfather will help the brothers heal their rift. It wasn't immediately clear how long Harry, who has been self-isolating in line with the U.K.'s coronavirus restrictions since arriving from California early this week, will stay in his home country.Saturday's funeral was limited to only 30 people, who all had to wear masks, sit in family bubbles and remain socially distanced in the same church that had hosted hundreds of people for Harry and Meghan's royal wedding in 2018. And Britain's continued coronavirus restrictions may limit how much opportunity the brothers will get to smooth over their differences."Because of the restrictions of COVID, it's difficult to get down to decent conservations," said royal biographer Penny Junor. "It's probably quite difficult to sit down as they normally would over a beer and discuss things."

The citizens of National City have found a new solution to dealing with pain and trauma. The answer to solving their problems is to lose themselves in the virtual world.  According to Obsidian North virtual reality is perfect for dealing with stress and working out your problems. Maybe even make your wildest dreams come true. What if you were to get lost? What if you couldn’t find the way out?  What if what started as virtual reality is reality to you now? Alex is in pain from the loss of Jeremiah. She was so close to her father they could finish each other’s sentences. He depended on her for many things. She was expected to help her mother and look out for her little sister. Jeremiah often treated Alex like an equal. Often forgetting that she was just a child herself. Alex screams that she has lost him so many times she does not feel compelled to accompany Kara to Midvale to bury their father and comfort their mother.  She also pushes Kelly away. She is making it clear that she just wants to be left alone with a bottle of wine. Since Kara has left for Midvale, William enlists Kelly to help in his investigation. He believes there is some nefarious motive for the Lex Luthor world tour.  Kelly is still wondering why her concerns with the faulty virtual reality fail safe button have not been addressed. Andrea says the service request is hung up in the board of directors and she will take care of it. William tracked down a warehouse address linked to an IP address. While William continues to investigate. Kelly goes to check on Alex.  Alex has decided to escape from the real world for a while into the virtual world of her choice. What if she were Supergirl?  At first she is excited to expel some of her anger by punching stuff. However when a dragon attacks the City she realizes that some of Kara’s powers are not as easy to use as they look. When she discovers that Kara was taken by Hank Henshaw she springs into action. Helping her sister and the City is second nature to Alex both in this world and in reality. Kelly finds Alex on the couch. The contact lenses have turned red. Something is wrong.  Alex is not responding to the shot of adrenaline. Time for the next step. Kelly must go in and pull her out.  Alex is so deeply involved in the event taking place in the virtual world that she refuses to believe that what she is experiencing is not real.  She always had to depend on herself so maybe another version of Alex can convince our Alex to return to the real world.  When William makes it to the warehouse it appears empty. Sometimes what you see can be deceiving. When William finds an identification bracelet on the ground he knows he has to keep looking. There is more here than meets the eye. Young Alex is able to tell her older self exactly what she needed to hear. Even if Alex was Supergirl she still couldn’t have saved her father. She is not Kara and she doesn’t have Kryptonian powers but Alex Danvers is a hero. Every day she protects her City, helps her sister and mother and loves her girlfriend. That is the kind of woman she is. Many questions still remain. Where is Lena?  What is Lex doing with these satellites? What about Gemma Cooper? Why is the failsafe not fixed?  Is it because they want to lock people in this dream world? Is this warehouse where Margo is watching over people lost to the real world?  Is she the only one? Alex talked to some people inside virtual reality that were losing their sense of self. Could there be more? Until next time National City. This is your eye in sky Green Butterfly. Stay safe, take care of each other and have a super week.

Doing For Selves: Open Source Supplies and Tenant Organizing Welcome to a podcast special from The Final Straw. While William is was busy producing an episode featuring voices of medical professionals and activists inside and out of prison to talk about the impacts of covid-19 on incarcerated people for broadcast, I had a couple of conversations about work folks are doing on the outside that I'd like to share. Hacking To Fight Covid-19 First, I spoke with Bill Slavin of Indie Lab, space in Virginia that is in the process of shifting it's purpose since the epidemic became apparent from an broader scientific and educational maker space to work on the manufacturing and distribution of covid-19 related items in need such as testing kits, medical grade oxygen, ventilators and 3d printed n95 quality masks for medical professionals to fill public health needs. Bill talks generally about the ways that community and scientists can come together through mutual aid to deal with this crisis left by the inaction of the government on so many levels. They are also crowd-sourcing fundraising for scaling up their production and facilities and there's a link in our show notes on that. The platform that Bill talks about in the chat is known as Just One Giant Lab, or JOGL. Consider this an invitation for makers to get involved. Organizing With Your Neighbors For Homes and Dignity Then, I talked to Julian of Tenants United of Hyde Park and Woodlawn in Chicago. What with all of the talk about rent strikes in the face of such huge leaps in unemployment during the spread of covid-19 and accompanying economic collapse, I thought it'd be helpful to have this chat to help spur on these conversations of how we seize power back into our hands while we're being strangled by quarantine and hopefully afterwards. You can learn more about the group Julian works with at TenantsUnitedHPWL.Org. Philadelphia Tenants Union and Los Angeles Tenants Union were both mentioned and will be linked in the show notes, alongside a reminder that the national Autonomous Tenants Union Network (ATUN) is being organized and folks can reach out to Philly TU or LA TU via email to get onto their organizing zoom calls. Finally, if you're in the Chicago area and need a lawyer for housing, check out Lawyers Committee For Better Housing online at lcbh.org. Julian also mentioned squatting of homes in southern CA owned by the state, here's a link to an article. Announcements WNC Mutual Aid Projects Linked in our show notes is also a googledoc that Cindy Milstein and others are helping to keep updated that lists many mutual aid projects that have sprung up all over concerning the exacerbation of capitalism by the covid-19 crisis, as well as a similar page up from ItsGoingDown.Org . If you're in so-called Western NC and want to get involved, the project Asheville Survival Project has a presence on fedbook and is soliciting donations of food and sanitary goods for distribution to indigent, bipoc, elder and immune compromised folks in the community. We'll link some social media posts on the subject that list our donation sites around Asheville in the show notes and you can venmo donations to @AVLsurvival. If you care to contribute to efforts in Boone, NC, you can follow the instagram presence for @boonecommunityrelief or join the fedbook group by the same name, reach them via email at boonecommunityrelief@protonmail.com find donation sites and venmo donations can happen up at via venmo at @Bkeeves. NC Prisons Covid-19 Phone Zap And check our show notes for an invitation to call the NC Department of Public Safety and Governor's offices to demand the release of NC prisoners susceptible to infection and possible death of Corona Virus in the NC system due to improper care. Wherever you are listening, consider getting together with others and calling jails, prison agencies and the executive branches to demand similarly the release of AT THE VERY LEAST the aged, infirm, folks in pre-trial detention, upcoming release or who are held because they can't pay bail.   North Carolina Corrections Department-Prison Division (919) 838-4000 North Carolina Governors Office 919-814-2000 https://governor.nc.gov/contact/contact-governor-cooper  sample script: My name is ________, and I am a North Carolina resident  deeply concerned about the safety of the states's incarcerated people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Incarcerated people have a unique vulnerability to disease due to their crowded, unsanitary living conditions and lack of access to adequate medical care. For humanitarian reasons as well as reasons of public health, we call for the immediate release of all people in the North Carolina prison system. We also urge that you stop the intake of new prisoners during the pandemic. The cost of failing to take these steps will be paid for in human lives, and we refuse to abandon our neighbors and loved ones to die in lockup. CALL AS MANY TIMES AS YOU CAN stay tuned to the twitter accounts for @NCResists and @EmptyCagesColl for updates 10th Anniversary Even while the world burns, our 10th anniversary still approaches and we're still soliciting messages from you, our listenership.
