Matt Crawford speaks with author Peter Philips about his book, Titans of Capital: How Concentrated Wealth Threatens Humanity. In Titans of Capital, Peter Phillips, a political sociologist, poses three key research questions: To what extent do the wealthy influence—or even dominate—decision making that affects all of us in society? Who are the most powerful people? And how does the accumulation of capital work? 117 people are in charge of asset management companies that control 50 trillion dollars. Those investments shape the world, and when that capital shores up practices detrimental to society and the health of the planet we should all have something to say about it.

Amidst the hype, excitement and nervousness of the election, the bigger picture of what the United States is and how it operates often gets lost on people. Many think that choosing one or another candidate will significantly alter their future to better represent their values, but in reality there is only one group of people that matter the most: those who Dr. Peter Phillips, professor emeritus at Sonoma State University, calls the “titans of capital.” In his new book by the same name, Phillips studies the economic trends following the COVID-19 pandemic and how the wealth concentration in the world took a dramatic turn towards the already ultra-wealthy. He joins host Robert Scheer on this episode of Scheer Intelligence to further analyze these trends and how dire inequality is becoming. The main problem is simple to understand: the ultra-wealthy “doubled their wealth concentration.” That means, according to Phillips, that “the upper one half of 1% of the people got richer and basically, the rest of the world got poorer.” Phillips names the top 10 capital investment companies, such as BlackRock, Vanguard, State Street, Morgan Stanley and others as the main culprits. Over $50 trillion are controlled by 117 people across these 10 companies, according to Phillips. This immense concentration of wealth inevitably renders any semblance of democracy almost useless, as the main decision makers are those who hold the biggest bag. “Whoever we elect as President is not going to make any difference because they're managed by capital,” Phillips tells Scheer.  “They're there to protect global capital. That's what the American political system is about. That's what the political systems in the West are about. They see capital as a vital interest of the West, and that's why we have military bases all over the world to protect capital and to ensure that debts get repaid and that this capital continues to grow and expand.”

Get Peter's book here: https://a.co/d/hAtLLq0   In Titans of Capital, Peter Phillips, a political sociologist, poses three key research questions: To what extent do the wealthy influence—or even dominate—decision making that affects all of us in society? Who are the most powerful people? And how does the accumulation of capital work? Networks of wealthy individuals have evolved since the COVID-19 pandemic, and Titans of Capital shows how the financial investments of transnational elites threaten human rights and the future of the planet.   Private capital investments serve as the primary operating funds for international arms sales, private prisons, and other socially negative activities. These investments fuel the continued use of carbon-based energy leading to amplified global warming and climate change.   Military spending is a critical component of continued wealth concentration and political power in the world. Spending on arms and intelligence is a required aspect of maintaining global power and control. Dealing with Russia, China, Iran and other “rogue” states is a continuing agenda for agents of the world power elites. Propaganda machines in Western capitalist governments serve to protect elite wealth by promoting military conflicts to open new regions for economic investment.   Phillips warns that while continued concentration of global capital increases the profits enjoyed by the global economy's “Titans,”, it also increases global inequality, starvation, and civil unrest, threatening the lives of the hundreds of millions of people living in extreme poverty. It is imperative to ask how we can reverse the concentration of Titan wealth and revitalize grassroots democracy unbridled by extreme wealth. Identifying 117 global Titans by name and exposing the networks and interests that unite them provides readers opposed to militarism and committed to economic equality with crucial tools to directly engage the power elite who endanger life on earth.   Check out our new bi-weekly series, "The Crisis Papers" here: https://www.patreon.com/bitterlakepresents/shop   Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. The titans of capital aren't just the obscenely wealthy. They are the directors of transnational finance companies; they manage the money of the obscenely wealthy.Steve's guest, political sociologist Peter Phillips, is the author of Titans of Capital: How Concentrated Wealth Threatens Humanity. The titans, he says, have doubled their AUM (assets under management) in the past 5 years.“There's only 117 of them and they manage $50 trillion of capital. That $50 trillion is the core –– almost half of the free-floating capital in the world. And that is what the US calls a vital interest. So, when the US says we have vital interests in the world, that's what they mean.“And that's why we have military bases everywhere in the world, because these investors are everywhere. And any rivalries are undermined by our intelligence agencies, by the government, by military whenever possible. So, it just happens that governments work on behalf of capital.”So, if you're wondering why the US has military interests in Ukraine or Gaza. Look to the titans, whose firms are investing in the defense industry. They profit off of warWhile the titans are massively increasing the wealth of the top .05 percent of the world's population, over 20,000 people die each day from starvation and easily curable diseases. While the ruling class and their media mouthpieces insist that capitalism is going to save the world and money will trickle down...“It's not. It's exactly the opposite. People are dying daily. There are 700 million people who live in extreme poverty in the world. And extreme poverty means you're living on $2.15 a day. That's the UN set level for extreme poverty.Steve and Peter discuss ways in which the titans are able to bend policy to their own purposes. They mention the role of groups like the Trilateral Commission and the Council on Foreign Relations. The episode also compares the approaches of the US and China, illustrating China's success in alleviating extreme poverty through state-driven economic strategies and how the US tries to spin China as a threat.Steve and Peter talk about the need for revolutionary social movements to challenge the entrenched capitalist structures and demand wealth redistribution, using the insights of MMT to spur new thinking about alternative economic possibilities.Peter Phillips is a Professor of Political Sociology at Sonoma State University since 1994, former Director of Project Censored 1996 to 2010 and President of Media Freedom Foundation 2003 to 2017.

According to the Californian political sociologist Peter Phillips, American capitalism is facing an existential crisis. In his new book, Titans of Capital, he argues that the concentrated wealth of investment companies like BlackRock and Fidelity not only threatens human rights and democracy, but also the future of planet. Perhaps. But where Phillips really goes out on a limb is to argue that the Chinese state controlled model of capitalism which, he says, has brought hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, is more humane than the free market American model. Seriously?Peter Phillips is a Professor of Political Sociology at Sonoma State University since 1994, former Director of Project Censored 1996 to 2010 and President of Media Freedom Foundation 2003 to 2017. Mickey and Eleanor co-host this week's episode of the Project Censored Show. In the first half of the program, Mickey speaks with Dave Lindorff about the remarkable story of Ted Hall, a scientific genius who was put to work on the WW II Manhattan Project while still in his teens, then gave his knowledge of atomic secrets to the USSR, to prevent the US from being the world's sole nuclear power. Lindorff also shares information from declassified military documents from the 1940s and 1950s about US planning for a nuclear first strike against the USSR. In the second half of the show Mickey and Eleanor discuss recent attacks against press freedom in the US, from the now-well-known police raid on the Marion County Record in Kansas, to other cases of government interference with media that haven't had as much scrutiny. Dave Lindorff is a long-time investigative reporter who written on topics from health care to the Mumia abu-Jamal case. His new book on Ted Hall, “Spy For No Country: The Story of Ted Hall, The Teenage Atomic Spy Who May Have Saved the World” will be in print later this year. Eleanor Goldfield hosts this week's Project Censored Show. In the first segment, Crystal Mello provides an update on the Mountain Valley Pipeline, a project that once appeared stalled by opposition, but was revived by Congress. It would deliver fracked natural gas from West Virginia into Virginia. Crystal Mello says the pipeline's construction has disrupted local water supplies, and brought numerous other ill effects. She also says local media are spreading false information about the project. Later in the program, Carla Joy Bergman explains the concept of “adult supremacy,” pointing out that society still sanctions age discrimination against its youngest members. She proposes instead recognition and respect for children's' autonomy, especially in schools.   The News That Didn't Make the News. Historian Peter Kuznick joins Mickey to discuss the new Christopher Nolan movie “Oppenheimer.” While his overall evaluation is positive, Kuznick notes that the movie fails to address the crucial fact that there was no military need to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. Kuznick also reminds listeners that had Henry Wallace not been replaced as Vice-President by Harry Truman, Wallace would have succeeded to the presidency upon FDR's death in April 1945, and history would've taken a different path (Kuznick believes that Wallace would not have used the bomb, nor started the Cold War). In the second half of the show, Peter Phillips and Bill Tiwald remind listeners of the catastrophe that even a “limited” nuclear war would unleash on humanity, as well as the human and financial costs of maintaining nuclear stockpiles. They explain how New Mexico has borne a disproportionate share of the nuclear burden, and talk about an event they helped organize — the Albuquerque Peace Festival (www.abqpeacefest.org), taking place on August 5. Our Coronation Countdown continues with a scion of House Windsor who has never held a title, but has still made some waves for the Palace. Peter Phillips, son of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, was set up to live a "normal" life in spite of being Queen Elizabeth II's first grandchild. It sort of worked! His future first wife only learned of his family ties when, months into their relationship, she saw him in a documentary talking about his cousins, Princes William and Harry. When things came apart in the marriage, Buckingham Palace was kind enough to leave the story well enough alone. Want early, ad-free episodes, limited series, Zoom hangouts, and more? Several years ago, you'd find Peter Phillips driving excavators around a construction site. Today he's one of the masterminds behind the fast-growing Chip City Cookies, a cookie bakery with14 stores and counting. Tune in to learn how this co-founder went from real estate developer to bakery entrepreneur, landing a $10 million investment from Enlightened Hospitality. Peter Phillips jumped right out of high school and into real estate. Some people turn to art for creativity, but Peter found building a project from the ground up his type of creative process. He dove all in, starting as a broker. Peter learned the project management ropes by helping with his father's real estate development business. He wasn't afraid to lean in and get dirty, so he became a subcontractor and learned to drive heavy equipment. Throughout his career, he kept in touch with his high school buddy, Teddy Gailas, who worked in the food and hospitality industry. They occasionally talked about opening a side hustle together. A brainstorming session inside a small store recently available in Astoria, Queens, hit on the idea for a cookie business. Focusing on nostalgic flavors and quality ingredients, the first store quickly had lines around the block and gained early press attention. Like many food industry businesses, the pandemic tested their business model and strategy, but Chip City Cookies endured. Their survival proved their model worked and inspired the duo to see how far Chip City could grow. In our chat, Peter talks about how doubling down on quality and adhering to their culture have sustained and grown their business. Even as other investors showed interest, not compromising their core values paid off as they found the right investor in Shake Shack entrepreneur Danny Meyer's Enlightened Hospitality brand.
