Law enforcement rangers cleared an illegal cannabis grow in Sequoia National Park, where they found thousands of plants, toxic chemicals, and major environmental damage. A new national park could be coming to Florida—legislation has been introduced to study the creation of “Florida Springs National Park.” Workers at Yosemite and Sequoia & Kings Canyon have voted overwhelmingly to unionize, joining a growing movement across the Park Service. Plus: new hunting and fishing opportunities at wildlife refuges, the Maurice Bathhouse restoration at Hot Springs, a fruitless year at Capitol Reef's orchards, and more. If you got your coffee from a Seattle Starbucks this morning, it may have been prepared by a unionized barista. At least 33 Starbucks in Washington have unions, including the cafe at the company’s headquarters in Sodo and the Reserve Roastery on Capitol Hill, according to The Seattle Times. It’s the result of an organizing effort that began in 2021 in Buffalo, New York. Starbucks workers across that city kicked off a renewed push to unionize those coffee shops. Jaz Brisack was one of the lead organizers on that campaign. They began working with unions while they were a student at the University of Mississippi. Brisack is also the author of "Get on the Job and Organize: Standing Up for a Better Workplace and a Better World," which came out earlier this year. They stopped by the KUOW to talk about their book and why they think that if you have a job, you should have a union. Thank you to the supporters of KUOW, you help make this show possible! Uber drivers in Victoria are forming Canada's first rideshare union. The feds want more electric cars. Automakers want more people to actually buy them. Right now, neither side is getting what it wants.

The shooting inside the student union of the Florida State University campus in Tallahassee Thursday impacted hundreds of students, teachers and staffers. We interviewed a witness. Next: New College let go its marketing director, after he was arrested by Manatee County deputies Tuesday for exposure of sexual organs. The Suncoast Searchlight and Florida Trident investigated, and we have their report. Then: New College fired a Chinese professor, citing a new Florida law, and that is making ripples. The Suncoast Searchlight has that report. Finally: It's unprecedented - bankers in Florida are joining unions. Five bank tellers in Bradenton are now bargaining with Wells Fargo, and Sera Deniz talked to a union organizer.
Unionize and get fired: Minneapolis cafe workers just learned that harsh economic lesson the hard way. After Cafe Serez baristas voted to form a union with 88% support, ownership responded with a simple solution—shutting down all four locations and terminating 30 employees. Watch as we expose the disconnect between union organizers claiming they were 'about to cross the finish line with a fair contract' while completely ignoring the 3-5% profit margins that make most restaurants barely viable. From fundraising failures to delusional statements about 'dignity and stable careers,' these former employees now face the reality of rent coming due with no paychecks in sight.Did these workers seriously not see this coming? Is this pattern of union-busting closures at Starbucks and Trader Joe's just a coincidence, or are business owners sending a clear message? Share your thoughts below on whether employees demanding more are justified or dangerously out of touch with economic realities.
On episode 235, we welcome Jaz Brisack to discuss unionizing efforts for Starbucks workers and Project Germinal, how unions form and why workers may fear them, the popular ideas of unions and how they're misrepresented by corporate media, Jaz's experiences in the Starbucks union and “salting,” whether corporate managers act in good faith, anti-union tactics and why they should be considered psychological warfare, and how workers can sustain a sense of hope in the face of their significant and persistent professional struggles. Jaz Brisack is a union organizer and cofounder of the Inside Organizer School, which trains workers to unionize. After spending one year at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, they got a job as a barista at the Elmwood Starbucks in Buffalo, New York, becoming a founding member of Starbucks Workers United and helping organize the first unionized Starbucks in the United States. As the organizing director for Workers United Upstate New York & Vermont, they also worked with organizing committees at companies ranging from Ben & Jerry's to Tesla. Right now, our government is making dramatic slashes to the federal workforce. Tens of thousands have already lost their jobs, and healthcare benefits are definitely on the chopping block. At the same time, the Trump regime is perhaps the most anti-union administration in our history, working to lessen the power of workers. In her recent article for Capital and Main, Jesse Baum tells the story of The Southern Women Handling 1-800-MEDICARE Calls and their demands for a Union. She's with us to discuss.

Washington's iconic outdoor retailer, REI, has gotten a little too far out over its skis. The member-owned co-op has been losing money for years. Always a hot topic. Labor Unions, you're either a supporter or do everything you can to avoid them. Currently, there are no registered Unions in South Africa that directly represent Professional Hunters. Should there be? And will they be beneficial to PHs and the industry? Or will they simply cause division amongst Outfitters and those they rely on to guide their clients. In today's topic, I try to answer those questions. Enjoy! RATE & REVIEW or else you won't get that Kudu bull you have been dreaming of, it's a fact!

Shoot us a Text.Today's the day when we release More Than Cars episode 4: Mohawk Chevrolet at 1PM! Oh and we're also talking about Rivian and VW's finalized joint venture, how the UAW is struggling to gain momentum following last year's big wins and how Dodge is adjusting its EV and ICE muscle car plans.Show Notes with links:Rivian Automotive and Volkswagen Group have finalized a significant joint venture worth up to $5.8 billion to advance electrical architecture and software for future EVs, utilizing Rivian's current tech.Since the venture was announced in June, VW's investment in Rivian has grown from an initial $5 billion.Rivian brings its advanced EV technology, while VW contributes its vast manufacturing scale. The initial phase includes deploying Rivian's system in VW vehicles, launching Rivian's R2 by 2026 and VW's Scout brand vehicles by 2027.The partnership focuses on electrical architecture and software, not hardware, though Scout Motors CEO Scott Keogh hinted Scout's EVs will leverage the tech.“By combining complementary expertise, we aim to reduce costs and accelerate new tech,” VW's Oliver Blume stated. This venture is crucial for Rivian's financial strategy, as it faced a $1.1 billion Q3 loss amid slowed revenue and production.Outspoken UAW President Shawn Fain is facing mounting obstacles in organizing nonunion U.S. factories owned by Toyota, Hyundai, Mercedes, and others amid a shifting political and corporate landscape.Following historic labor deals with the Big 3, Fain aimed to build on momentum, targeting new factories, especially in the South.Despite a spring win at VW, recent efforts at Toyota and Hyundai encountered resistance, as these automakers raised wages to counter unionization drives.Initially focusing on a rapid approach, Fain encouraged online union pledges and fewer traditional one-on-one meetings. At Mercedes in Alabama, a quick vote resulted in a narrow loss, with 56% against unionizing.“It wasn't like we got annihilated there,” Fain said. “That was a very, very close election.”Fain emphasized the importance of the UAW's first contract with VW in Chattanooga, saying, “We won in a place where no one said we could win. Now, the argument is, ‘We're not winning fast enough,' when initially it was, ‘We can't win.'”Dodge is moving up the launch date of its gas-powered Charger Sixpack to early summer 2025, five months ahead of schedule, in response to strong demand for traditional internal combustion muscle cars. The decision was influenced by anticipated regulatory shifts under President-Elect Donald Trump, potentially easing EV mandates.Originally planned for late 2025, the ICE Charger Sixpack is now set to arrive ahead of Dodge's all-electric Charger Daytona. The Charger Sixpack will feature a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight-six Hurricane engine, with up to 550 horsepower in the high-output variant.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Kate Wolf speaks with filmmakers Brett Story and Stephen Maing about their new documentary Union, which is out in theaters now. It follows, in real time, the forming of the first ever Amazon union in the country, the ALU, at the JKF8 plant in Staten Island. Later in the conversation Chris Smalls, the president of ALU, joins as well. Chris began to petition for the Amazon union after he was fired by the company in March of 2020 for walking off the job in protest of the lack of Covid safety precautions at the plant. The film picks up about a year later as Chris and his fellow organizers are gathering signatures to ratify their petition to formalize the union process. It captures the ensuing months of grueling work by Chris and other ALU members as they try to convince the 8,000 plus workers at the JFK8 plant that a union is in their best interest. The film is an object lesson in the many tactics needed for political organizing, and the inevitable discord that comes with it, both from the outside—in this case, one of the biggest companies in the world—and from within as well. Also, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, author of Survival Is A Promise: the Eternal Life of Audre Lorde, returns to recommend Audre Lorde's The Black Unicorn.
