Philadelphians are spending their own time and resources to maintain vacant and neglected land in their neighborhoods. These vacant lots can become community gathering spaces, such as gardens and playgrounds, thanks to the stewardship of these neighbors. Then the owners of the lots can take them back when they want to build. Host Trenae Nuri speaks with Ryan Gittler-Muñiz, land security organizer for Iglesias Garden and organizer of the Philadelphia Land Stewards Union, about the new union and how it's pushing for people who live around vacant land to have a say in what happens to it. Tottenham Hotspur's crisis worsened against Crystal Palace as West Ham United beat Fulham. In cup action, Wrexham A.F.C. met Chelsea in the FA Cup, while Spurs also faced Atlético Madrid in the Champions League, where things boiled over, and Liverpool was rattled by the Turkish atmosphere.

On this episode of the America's Work Force Union Podcast, we cover two major stories of workers building power—from the animation studios of Hollywood to the statehouse in Iowa. Segment 1: The Organizing Wave in Animation DreamWorks Animation remote feature production workers and the production team behind the TED animated TV series have voted to unionize, joining The Animation Guild (IATSE Local 839) and the Editors Guild (IATSE Local 700). Organizer Allison Smartt, TED: The Animated Series Color Coordinator Kelly Simmons, and Organizer Ben Speight join the show to discuss this major victory. They explain how the pandemic exposed a "zip code barrier" where remote workers were denied union protections simply for moving out of LA County. The group also discusses: The push to end the "two-tier" system that separates production staff from artists. Why establishing guardrails for Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a critical part of their fight. How industry consolidation is driving more workers to organize for job security. Segment 2: Why Union Members Must Run for Office Dan Gosa, a third-generation member of Insulators Local 81 and current Iowa State Representative, joins the show to discuss his re-election campaign. Gosa serves as President of the Quad City Federation of Labor and brings a "kitchen-table" perspective to the legislature. Gosa details the challenges facing Iowa's working families, including the drastic cut to unemployment benefits (from 26 weeks down to 16) and the need for "Responsible Bidder" laws to track bad-actor contractors who misclassify workers. He argues that when union members sit at the decision-making table, they can stop policies that strip funding from essential local services and ensure working-class issues aren't treated as political games. Today on the show, abortion will remain legal in Wyoming for now. We dig into the crux of the arguments from the Wyoming Supreme Court, including a look back at the passing of one key constitutional right. The property tax bill for your home might be going away, maybe forever. That's if some state lawmakers get their way. We'll also hear how, despite a federal boost, coal still struggled in 2025. And local community fundraising is becoming more important to some Laramie-based non-profits. Those stories and more.

If you got your coffee from a Seattle Starbucks this morning, it may have been prepared by a unionized barista. At least 33 Starbucks in Washington have unions, including the cafe at the company’s headquarters in Sodo and the Reserve Roastery on Capitol Hill, according to The Seattle Times. It’s the result of an organizing effort that began in 2021 in Buffalo, New York. Starbucks workers across that city kicked off a renewed push to unionize those coffee shops. Jaz Brisack was one of the lead organizers on that campaign. They began working with unions while they were a student at the University of Mississippi. Brisack is also the author of "Get on the Job and Organize: Standing Up for a Better Workplace and a Better World," which came out earlier this year. They stopped by the KUOW to talk about their book and why they think that if you have a job, you should have a union. Thank you to the supporters of KUOW, you help make this show possible! Uber drivers in Victoria are forming Canada's first rideshare union. The feds want more electric cars. Automakers want more people to actually buy them. Right now, neither side is getting what it wants.

Unionize and get fired: Minneapolis cafe workers just learned that harsh economic lesson the hard way. After Cafe Serez baristas voted to form a union with 88% support, ownership responded with a simple solution—shutting down all four locations and terminating 30 employees. Watch as we expose the disconnect between union organizers claiming they were 'about to cross the finish line with a fair contract' while completely ignoring the 3-5% profit margins that make most restaurants barely viable. From fundraising failures to delusional statements about 'dignity and stable careers,' these former employees now face the reality of rent coming due with no paychecks in sight.Did these workers seriously not see this coming? Is this pattern of union-busting closures at Starbucks and Trader Joe's just a coincidence, or are business owners sending a clear message? Share your thoughts below on whether employees demanding more are justified or dangerously out of touch with economic realities.
On episode 235, we welcome Jaz Brisack to discuss unionizing efforts for Starbucks workers and Project Germinal, how unions form and why workers may fear them, the popular ideas of unions and how they're misrepresented by corporate media, Jaz's experiences in the Starbucks union and “salting,” whether corporate managers act in good faith, anti-union tactics and why they should be considered psychological warfare, and how workers can sustain a sense of hope in the face of their significant and persistent professional struggles. Jaz Brisack is a union organizer and cofounder of the Inside Organizer School, which trains workers to unionize. After spending one year at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, they got a job as a barista at the Elmwood Starbucks in Buffalo, New York, becoming a founding member of Starbucks Workers United and helping organize the first unionized Starbucks in the United States. As the organizing director for Workers United Upstate New York & Vermont, they also worked with organizing committees at companies ranging from Ben & Jerry's to Tesla. Their new book, available on April 29, 2025, is called Get on the Job and Organize: Standing Up for a Better Workplace and a Better World. | Jaz Brisack | ► Website | https://www.insideorganizerschool.com ► Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/jazbrisack ► Twitter | https://x.com/jazbrisack ► Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/jaz.brisack ► Get on the Job and Organize Book | https://bit.ly/GetontheJobandOrganize Where you can find us: | Seize The Moment Podcast | ► Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/SeizeTheMoment ► Twitter | https://twitter.com/seize_podcast ► Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/seizethemoment
Right now, our government is making dramatic slashes to the federal workforce. Tens of thousands have already lost their jobs, and healthcare benefits are definitely on the chopping block. At the same time, the Trump regime is perhaps the most anti-union administration in our history, working to lessen the power of workers. In her recent article for Capital and Main, Jesse Baum tells the story of The Southern Women Handling 1-800-MEDICARE Calls and their demands for a Union. She's with us to discuss.

The hearing focused on how local governments cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. WNYC reporter Arya Sundaram has the latest.
Rideshare drivers in Minnesota would be able to unionize under a bill state lawmakers plan to introduce, and warm temperatures and a dwindling snowpack have forced organizers of this year's John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon in northeast Minnesota to move the starting location. Those stories and more in today's evening update. Hosted by Emily Reese. Music by Gary Meister.
Washington's iconic outdoor retailer, REI, has gotten a little too far out over its skis. The member-owned co-op has been losing money for years. And that's put it at odds with its employees who want better wages and benefits. On today's episode, workers in the service industry are organizing at companies that used to seem immune from unionization. So, could the next generation of workers revolutionize retail?
