Last Episode FollowUp: LADY Follow Up- Mast Cells and Histamines How interesting that y'all were talking about mast cells and histamine on last's night show. Just a little rabbit hole for you: The condition that you were speaking of last night - an allergic reaction to extreme cold - is called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). The condition Omi was speaking about with fingers turning various shades of white, blue, and purple during temperature changes is called Raynaud's. Both MCAS and Raynaud's are co-morbids of a congenital condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS).  EDS is a connective tissue disease and has over 10 subtypes, with hypermobile EDS (hEDS) being the most common. The top co-morbidities for EDS are MCAS, chronic inflammatory conditions such as migraine, interstitial cystitis, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS); and dysautonomia. MCAS is an absolute nightmare to live with as literally anything can set it off: food, temperature changes, stress, a mosquito bite, solar weather, someone marinating in their perfume or cologne, dust, & etc. Reactions can range from sneezing and itchiness to anaphylaxis - just as you said. I am all too familiar with this condition as my daughter, youngest son, and myself all suffer from it. In fact, with the ice storm that hit NC weekend before last, the youngest son was out playing in it and when he came in his cheeks were a bright red. I immediately gave him Benadryl. The next morning when he woke up, not only had the Benadryl not touched it, his eyes, lips, and cheeks were swollen like he'd been beat up. That was a trip to the ER. And the scary part of MCAS is that it is not consistent. One week you can eat chicken and it's fine; the next week, you're off to the ER. There is literally no way to know how, if, or when your mast cells are going to have a hissy fit. All that said, it is interesting to note that histamine, which is elevated during an MCAS event, can exit the body through multiple means including sweat. Histamine reacts to electrostatic fields and in some cases has been the reason why some folks can perform telekinesis. Russian Leonid Leonidovich Vasiliev conducted research and found that a woman by the name of Nina Kulagina, who was thought to be telekinetic, had high amounts of histamine on her skin from sweat (body detoxifying), and that was interacting with the electrostatic field on the objects she was attempting to move, and was thus the reason she was able to move items viz., she wasn't telekinetic. Last year, Les Dames NC selected Food Connection as one of three beneficiaries of our annual holiday cookie sale—and this conversation is exactly why. This isn't about scraps or leftovers—it's about smoked brisket, roasted vegetables, crab cakes, veggie couscous… food that was cooked with care and deserves a second purpose. Food Connection connects those with too much food to those without enough—keeping hundreds of tons of fresh food out of landfills while delivering hundreds of thousands of heat-and-serve meals with dignity and choice. Inside this episode with your host, Mitch HamptonI grew up with both bookstores and record stores. Some of the first albums I bought were, aside from being large physical objects with quite elaborate artwork, were bought as part of the exploration inside of the record store. More often than not this involved ten year old me talking to older people about the new Return To Forever or Weather Report album or what this direct to disc Dave Brubeck album was all about. I loved speaking with Morgan Markowitz; this episode represents the most direct connection to how I learned about the arts in general and the importance of those physical spaces intended for public enjoyment that some of us call “third place”. To love music was for sixty plus years to be involved in one way or the other with some record storeMore on the wonderful Earth River Records Asheville's largest selection of Vinyl, Tapes & CDs with over 20,000 items both new and used! A second-generation vinyl legacy handed down from father to son! The first Earth River was based in Rochester, New York in the back of a headshop in 1968 and run by OG Owner Franklin Markowitz. Throughout the 70s & 80s the shop (and Franklin's huge vinyl collection) moved out west and based operations in Newport Beach, California. Franklin's family grew & Earth River Records expanded to multiple shop locations in Coos Bay, Eugene & Corvalis, Oregon. In the 90s & 2000s the shop was passed to Franklin's son Morgan and moved to Seattle, Washington. Earth River Records finally landed in Asheville, North Carolina in 2021. But it didn't!)The wonderful folks at Siam Thai fed the Woodfin community (and us) delicious food for free when our neighborhood was hungry. Mercy Chefs set up a kitchen two doors down. Travelling linemen, firefighters and responders came in looking for music and movies. Countless friends and customers reached out, checked in and helped each other. We weren't sure if the shop would make it in the wake of so much destruction and grief. But you kept our doors open! When the power came back on without internet service, suddenly all of this physical media had relevance again. People still needed to hear music, watch a comforting movie or play an old videogame. We've told the story of labor conflicts from Harlan, Kentucky to Blair Mountain, West Virginia. This week, we tell a story that's not set in the Kentucky or West Virginia coalfields, but in Western North Carolina. Gov.Josh Stein is wrapping up his first year in office. It's been a year marked by hurricane recovery efforts in Western North Carolina and fights with the legislature over taxes, Medicaid and more in Raleigh. He joined WUNC's Colin Campbell to discuss the big issues of 2025 and what's ahead next year, from the primary to property taxes

In this week's episode of the Carolina Weather Group, we look at a wild temperature swing heading into the holidays before revisiting one of the most resilient communities in Western North Carolina.

Community activists from western North Carolina voiced their frustrations at the U.S. Capitol on Monday. They’re upset about the slow pace of Hurricane Helene recovery relief, which they blame on the federal government. Meanwhile, Governor Josh Stein’s advisory committee on Western North Carolina recover, a bipartisan group of state and local officials in charge of Helene recovery goals, are pretty upset as well. WRAL state government reporter Will Doran discusses what these groups say is slowing things down and what they want to see change. Plus, what federal government representatives are saying about the complaints.  

Erika Bell and Hunter Jones describe the importance of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond connecting with small towns and rural communities throughout the Fifth District, including those in western North Carolina recovering from Hurricane Helene. Bell is a community development regional manager and Hunter is a senior business analyst. In addition, Russ Harris of the Southwestern Commission Council of Governments and Nathan Ramsey of the Land of Sky Regional Council reflect on the value of their partnerships with the Richmond Fed and other regional organizations, both before and after the hurricane.
