Being able to call someone's name lets them know you see them, you hear them, you care about them, and they're important to you.Post-Hurricane Helene recovery in Western North Carolina needs capital that treats local entrepreneurs as builders, not charity cases. Jeffrey Kaplan, CEO of Optimist Ventures and Director of Venture Asheville, is helping make that possible with a new fund designed for Asheville's real economy.During this episode, Jeffrey explained how Venture Asheville grew out of the region's economic development work. The team had already planned to launch an accelerator and fund before Hurricane Helene. Then the storm hit. Assumptions changed. Fundraising changed. The community changed.Rather than step back, Jeffrey and his team pivoted. Optimist Ventures raised its first fund, invested in seven companies last year and is preparing to invest in 13 more.That matters because, as Jeffrey said, “net new job growth creation is coming out of small businesses.” He sees local entrepreneurship not as a side project but as core economic development. In a place better known for hospitality, food and beverage, health and wellness than high-growth startups, that shift is powerful.The fund pairs philanthropy with investment capital. Each participating company receives $50,000. Half is a grant. Half is structured through a Shared Profit Agreement note, or SPA Note, a new instrument Optimist Ventures created to avoid the limits of traditional grants, debt and equity.Jeffrey described the thesis this way: “Could we create a localized fund that wasn't a debt fund, that wasn't onerous equity, that would also have a built-in liquidity system to get returns to investors without strangling our founders, without forcing exits or acquisitions or IPOs?”The answer became a purpose-fit profit-sharing model. Companies repay from net profit over six years. The structure encourages founders to reinvest, take care of employees and grow sustainably instead of chasing a quick exit.Jeffrey made the impact plain: “Every dollar stays here in Asheville. Every dollar helps recovery. Every dollar is creating a job.”I love this model because it brings dignity and accountability together. Founders get capital and support. Philanthropists get meaningful local impact. It's been almost 21-months since Hurricane Helene's impact was felt across Western North Carolina. While the region has largely recovered from some of the notable physical aspects of the story, the economic recovery will be going on for quite some time.Last week, Governor Stein's Advisory Committee for Western North Carolina recovery met in Boone, where the draft version of the region's Long-Term Economic Recovery plan was discussed. Listener Messages- Washington priest removed as exorcist after linking UFOs to work of demons | Catholicism | The Guardian Y'all might be interested in this as it has UFO/UAP, exorcists, and about a gazillion conspiracy theories: Recently, the exorcist for the D.C./Maryland diocese, Monsignor Stephen Rossetti, was fired for his remarks on a recent podcast about aliens and UFOs. Everyone is in an uproar because Monsignor is a powerhouse in the exorcism and spiritual warfare communities and highly respected. The reasons for his firing are, at best, confusing. McElroy said that Rossetti's remarks 'gravely undermined' the Church's teachings. The funny thing is, there is nothing in the Catechism that speaks directly to or about the subject, and there are no formal doctrinal or traditional teachings on the subject either! This is where the conspiracies begin: * Cardinal Robert McElroy, the archbishop of Washington, is the one responsible for Rossetti's firing, and he has a lot of questionable situations attached to him to start with. Is his firing of Rossetti personal, or is there something or someone else behind McElroy calling the shots? And why? * Rossetti is the second exorcist this year to have controversy. Earlier this year, another prominent exorcist, Father Chad Ripperger, came under fire and had his life threatened after appearing on the Shawn Ryan Show. * Rossetti is not just a Catholic priest. He is a Monsignor - which means it is an honorary papal title given as recognition for service to the Church. This alone lends credit to Rossetti's services to and in the Church. But, it doesn't stop there. He holds a PhD in psychology and is a licensed psychologist, was a Carthusian monk, and the best bit: served as an officer in the USAF as an intelligence officer. The dude has a lot going on that might make some people uncomfortable. With UAP/UFO disclosure being a hot topic right now, along with all the missing/deceased folks from Los Alamos and JPL, and now we have TWO exorcists who have made comments about UFOs and BOTH have been dealt harsh blows as a result, everyone is asking: WTH is going on?! Episode 74: Carrying a Language Home with Gil Jackson Episode Description What does it mean to be so connected to a place that even your name carries it? Gil Jackson, known by the Cherokee name Dohi, meaning outside or outdoors, was born in Robbinsville, North Carolina in 1951 and today lives on 30 acres just 200 yards from the spot where he came into the world. He is a fluent Cherokee speaker, one of roughly 130 left, an elder of the Snowbird community, and an educator who has taught at Stanford, UNC Asheville, and Duke. In 2014, he thru-hiked all 2,200 miles of the Appalachian Trail, walking in part to honor his ancestors on the Trail of Tears. In this conversation, Gil takes Josh inside a tight-knit upbringing built on Gadugi, the Cherokee construct of community, where neighbors came together to cut wood, harvest crops, and care for anyone in need. He explains why family kept him rooted in Western North Carolina even when opportunity called him elsewhere, how a community school preserved the language while the wider world pushed assimilation, and why Cherokee is considered one of the ten hardest languages in the world. They also talk about why Gil keeps walking. From a 48-mile day in the Great Smoky Mountains to the ladder-strewn West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island, his adventures are less about conquering anything and more about seeing the creator's creation. Most of all, this is a story about a race against time: preserving a language, the knowledge of medicinal plants, and the sacred sites that risk being lost before the next generation can carry them forward.
