How William Howard Survived Tudor England The Tudor court was a treacherous place where even the slightest misstep could cost you your head. For William Howard, 1st Baron Howard of Effingham, survival wasn't just luck—it was a carefully calculated game of loyalty, adaptability, and knowing when to keep quiet. On this day in Tudor history, 12th January 1573, William Howard died at Hampton Court Palace. But how did this man navigate the reigns of four Tudor monarchs without meeting the same grisly fate as many of his relatives—like Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard? Howard's story is one of resilience. He rose to power as a soldier, diplomat, and even Lord Admiral. But he wasn't without controversy—he faced imprisonment after getting caught up in Queen Catherine Howard's scandal and even defended London during Wyatt's Rebellion. Despite his family's dangerous reputation, he managed to rebuild his career and regain royal favour under both Mary I and Elizabeth I. So, what made William Howard different? What allowed him to endure when so many others fell? Let's uncover the remarkable story of a man who knew how to play the Tudor game of thrones—without losing his head. #TudorHistory #OnThisDay #WilliamHoward #HowardFamily #TudorCourt #AnneBoleyn #CatherineHoward #ElizabethanHistory #TudorPolitics #SurvivalInTudorEngland
In 1979, as Christmas approached, the United States Embassy in Tehran held more than fifty American hostages, who had been seized when revolutionaries stormed the embassy. No one from the U.S. had been able to have contact with them. The Reverend M. William Howard, Jr., was the president of the National Council of Churches at the time, and when he received a telegram from the Revolutionary Council, inviting him to perform Christmas services for the hostages, he jumped at the opportunity. In America, “we had a public that was quite riled up,” Reverend Howard reminds his son, The New Yorker Radio Hour's Adam Howard. “Who knows what might have resulted if this issue were not somehow addressed? . . . Might there be an American invasion, an attempt to rescue the hostages in a militaristic way?” Reverend Howard was aware that the gesture had some propaganda value to the Iranian militants, but he saw a chance to lower the tension. Accompanied by another Protestant minister and a Catholic bishop, Howard entered front-page headlines, travelling to Tehran and into the embassy. He gave the captives updates on the N.F.L. playoffs, and they prayed. It was a surreal experience to say the least. “It was in the Iranian hostage crisis that I understood how alone we are, and how powerless we are when other people take control,” Reverend Howard says. “And really it's in that setting that one can develop faith.”This segment originally aired on December 15, 2023.

About a year ago I decided to try using one of those apps where you tie your goals to some kind of financial penalty. The specific one I tried is Forfeit, which I liked the look of because it's relatively simple, you set single tasks which you have to verify you have completed with a photo.I'm generally pretty sceptical of productivity systems, tools for thought, mindset shifts, life hacks and so on. But this one I have found to be really shockingly effective, it has been about the biggest positive change to my life that I can remember. I feel like the category of things which benefit from careful planning and execution over time has completely opened up to me, whereas previously things like this would be largely down to the luck of being in the right mood for long enough. It's too soon to tell whether [...]The original text contained 7 footnotes which were omitted from this narration. --- First published: April 15th, 2024 Source: https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/DRrAMiekmqwDjnzS5/my-experience-using-financial-commitments-to-overcome --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO.

It's too soon to tell whether the effect will fade out eventually, but I have been doing this for ~10 months now[1] so I think I'm past the stage of being excited by a new system and can in good conscience recommend this kind of commitment mechanism as a way of overcoming akrasia. The rest of this post consists of some thoughts on what I think makes a good akrasia-overcoming approach in general, having now found one that works (see hindsight bias), and then advice on how to use this specific app effectively. This is aimed as a ~personal reflections post~ rather than a fact post. Thoughts on what makes a good anti-akrasia approach I don't want to lean too much on first principles arguments for what should work and what shouldn't, because I was myself surprised by how well setting medium sized financial penalties worked for me. I think it's worth explaining some of my thinking though, because the advice in the next section probably won't work as well for you if you think very differently. 1. Behaviour change ("habit formation") depends on punishment and reward, in addition to repetition A lot of advice about forming habits focuses on the repetition aspect, I think positive and negative feedback is much more important. One way to see this is to think of all the various admin things that you put off or have to really remind yourself to do, like taking the bins out. Probably you have done these hundreds or thousands of times in your life, many more times than any advice would recommend for forming a habit. But they are boring or unpleasant every time so you have to layer other stuff (like reminders) on top to make yourself actually do them. Equally you can take heroin once or twice, and after that you won't need any reminder to take it. I tend to think a fairly naively applied version of the ideas from operant conditioning is correct when it comes to changing behaviour. When a certain behaviour has a good outcome, relative to what the outcome otherwise would have been, you will want to do it more. When it has a bad outcome you will want to do it less. This is a fairly lawyerly way of saying it to include for example doing something quite aversive to avoid something very aversive; or doing something that feels bad but has some positive identity-affirming connotation for you (like working out). Often though it just boils down to whether you feel good or bad while doing it. The way repetition fits into this is that more examples of positive (negative) outcomes is more evidence that something is good (bad), and so repetition reinforces (or anti-reinforces) the behaviour more strongly but doesn't change the sign. A forwards-looking consequence of this framing is that by repeating an action that feels bad you are actually anti-reinforcing it, incurring a debt that will make it more and more aversive until you stop doing it. A backwards-looking consequence is that if the prospect of doing...

This week, Claire Ridgway, author of "On This Day in Tudor History", is dividing the week into two parts, and this first part covers Tudor events that took place on 11th, 12th and 13th January. 11th January 1584 - On this day in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the execution of printer William Carter took place at Tyburn. Carter was hanged, drawn and quartered for treason for printing a book which allegedly contained a passage inciting Queen Elizabeth I's assassination. 12th January 1573 - On this day in Elizabeth I's reign, William Howard, 1st Baron Howard of Effingham, diplomat, soldier and naval commander, died at Hampton Court. He had served under Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I. He managed to survive the fall of his good friend, John Dudley, in 1553, by choosing to be loyal to Mary I rather than Queen Jane, and managed to serve both Mary I and Elizabeth I loyally. 13th January 1593 - On this day in Elizabeth I's reign, Sir Henry Neville died. Neville was the son of a condemned traitor and a godson of King Henry VIII. On this week's episode of TSAM, J.Mix is joined by William Howard and Andy Bower to discuss what white ally-ship looks like from the black AND white perspective. A passenger on a flight from Auckland to Christchurch last Thursday says the lack of spare seats was an unwelcome surprise. William Howard was travelling south on an Air New Zealand flight to visit a friend in Christchurch, but he says every row he could see was taken up, and no passengers were able to distance from each other. On the airline's website, it says they will be allocating seating to allow an empty seat between customers travelling alone, although families will be able to stay together. A picture taken by Mr Howard shows that the allocated free space in his row had been taken up by a person. He spoke with reporter Mackenzie Smith about the flight.

Before Tennessee began its historic 1985 championship season, it was loaded with quality running backs. Keith Davis, Charles Wilson, Pete Panuska, William Howard and Big Sam Henderson were just some of the veteran backs who would be counted on. Nowhere in the preseason media guide was there any mention of a walk-on named Jeff Powell. In spite of his low profile Jeff Powell would go on to be remembered for one of the all time great runs in Tennessee football history when he came "roaring down the greensward of the super dome" in the 1986 Sugar Bowl against the Miami Hurricanes. This episode tells Jeff's fascinating story with interviews by him, his coach Doug Mathews, with archival sound from John Ward and Johnny Majors.
