Dr. Martin Blaser is the Henry Rutgers Chair of the Human Microbiome, professor of medicine and microbiology at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and author of Missing Microbes. His lab has been studying pathogenic bacteria since 1981 and the human microbiome since 2002. In this talk, I'll review the current state of the research on the clinical use of psychedelics, and describe psychedelic integration, the popular new practice of "microdosing," and the concept of "ego-death." I'll highlight the relationship between the stages of developmental psychology and tribal rites of passage - both of which are facilitated by the loosening action of visionary substances and both of which represent mini- "deaths and rebirths" - and show how societal development mirrors personal development. We'll conclude with a discussion of the future of psychedelics policy and the big-picture implications of a re-introduction of psychedelics into Western civilization. Neal M. Goldsmith, Ph.D. is a social psychologist, expert in psychedelic research and therapy, and a licensed psychotherapist with a psychospiritual development orientation. Author of dozens of popular and scholarly articles, he is a frequent speaker on psychotherapy and change, adult developmental psychology, psychedelics research and policy, and the integral future of society.
