This week on CounterSpin: Among many other things, 2024 was a series of reminders that corporate news media, tasked primarily with enriching the rich and shoring up entrenched institutions, will not, today or ever, do the liberatory, illuminating work of independent journalism — that boldly speaks truth to power, that stands up for the societally voiceless, that provides space for the debates and discussions we need to move society forward — for those of us who believe that U.S. society needs to change. New calendar years are symbolic, but they can also offer a fresh start. Why not see 2025 as a much needed opportunity to acknowledge, support, create, and grow independent journalism? We talk about that this week with two people who are and have been doing not just critical, dissident, uplifting journalism, but the thinking and advocating around why we need it: Sonali Kolhatkar, from Rising Up! With Sonali, and Laura Flanders from Laura Flanders and Friends. The post Sonali Kolhatkar and Laura Flanders on Independent Media and the Year Ahead appeared first on KPFA.

We have become incredibly good at producing food. In doing so we have transformed our planet. Yet when we go to the supermarket or eat at a restaurant, the supply chains, labour and environmental impacts that went into our food are all but invisible. Those impacts are huge. Today, humans and livestock make up 96% of all mammals. Agriculture consumes about 70% of global freshwater, and is responsible for some 80% of deforestation. And yet despite producing more than enough food to feed everyone on earth, every day a minimum of 800 million people go hungry, while a fifth of all food produced for human consumption goes to waste. Clearly, something's got to give. Thankfully, here to help us out of the mess is Dr. Sonali McDermid, a climate scientist and Chair of the Department of Environmental Studies at NYU. In this episode, she breaks down how climate and ecological crisis threaten our food systems — and how we can feed the world without wrecking the planet. Find more about the Break Down at break-down.org and be sure to follow us across social media to stay up-to-date with upcoming episodes, essay launches and more.

It is commonly known that t(w)eens reject their parents. It is considered just one of those "hard truths" of parenting through the teen years that we parents just need to put up with. I disagree. Yes, a teen does need to distinguish themselves as a separate being from their parent. Yes, they do try to do this by rejecting their parent, through isolating in their room, saying "Go Away!", eye-rolling, etc. And, here's what I see - even when they reject the parent in this way, the teen is still not getting their need met. That's why the teen continues to reject, and why that wall goes up between you and your teen. I'm going to share ways to take down that wall, brick by brick, by identifying and meeting your teen's (and your) core needs. And, I'll show you how to do this in a way that will have you and your teen in belly laughs. It's possible. Actually. Join us for a conversation with Sonali Vongchusiri as we explore why t(w)eens reject parents so relentlessly, how to respond instead of just saying ‘you're being rude,' and learn how to dismantle the growing wall, one brick at a time. NYU professor Sonali Thakkar's brilliant first book, The Reeducation of Race: Jewishness and the Politics of Antiracism in Postcolonial Thought (Stanford UP, 2023), begins as a mystery of sorts. When and why did the word “equality” get swapped out of the 1950 UNESCO Statement on Race, to be replaced by “educability, plasticity”? She and John sit down to discuss how that switcheroo allowed for a putative anti-racism that nonetheless preserved a sotto voce concept of race. They discuss the founding years of UNESCO and how it came to be that Jews were defined as the most plastic of races, and “Blackness” came to be seen as a stubbornly un-plastic category. The discussion ranges to include entwinement and interconnectedness, and Edward Said's notion of the "contrapuntal" analysis of the mutual implication of seemingly unrelated historical developments. Sonali's "Recallable Book" shines a spotlight on Aime Cesaire's Discourse on Colonialism--revised in 1955 to reflect ongoing debates about race and plasticity. *LIVE RECORDING. I wrote and delivered this poem, The Beautiful Ones Have Changed to Light, in honor of the martyred poets and writers of Gaza and Falesteen as part of the first ever Los Angeles reading of The Gaza Monologues, on January 19, 2024. Our gathering was organized by the precious Sonali Fiske @sonalifiske (IG) with the blessing of Ashtar Theatre @ashtartheatre (IG) in Ramallah and in response to their global artistic solidarity call. We gathered to pay our respects, bear witness, send collective Love and prayer, and recite the heart-piercing monologues written by young souls in Gaza.To birth this prayer-poem posted here, I soul-studied each of the named martyrs (among so many unnamed here) and, for each of them, wrote passages specifically in their honor. My prayer is that these personalized passages intuitively reflect aspects of their singular lives, work, passions, personalities, prayers, and dreams, including phrases here that are inspired by and evocative of their own written work.On Jan. 28, I posted on IG an unofficial phone recording of me reciting this poem. You may find it on my page. The official video of our overall monologue reading will be shared by Sonali and others in the days to come. For a written copy of this poem, please email jaiya@soulwater.org.Please feel free to share and post this poem with proper crediting far and wide, especially within the diaspora Fal*steeni and Levantine communities. May our Love reach them and be solace, salve, and balm in the human breeze. All of my books are available at jaiyajohn.com (thank you for purchasing directly from the author) and at booksellers worldwide.
