To say that the medical world's view of psychedelics has changed would be a vast understatement. Until about two decades ago, drugs like LSD and psilocybin—the active compound in psychedelic mushrooms—were considered dangerous party drugs. Then, a small group of scientists began reconsidering the therapeutic value of the compounds, known for centuries in many non-industrial cultures. In 2000, doctors at Johns Hopkins got regulatory approval to study the drugs. Since then, doctors there and elsewhere have shown that psychedelics can help people quit smoking, quit drinking, ease anxiety, and lift depression. PNI started its Treatment & Research In Psychedelics (TRIP) program in 2019, under the direction of Dr. Keith Heinzerling. So far, TRIP has completed three studies of psychedelics which are difficult to do because the drugs are still illegal under federal law. More studies particularly focusing on depression are underway. Working on those trials has made Dr. Heinzerling one of the foremost experts on psychedelics. Listen to the episode to learn more about the “psychedelic renaissance,” now in its 25th year, from a practitioner who has a thoughtful take on the promise of these once-shunned compounds.

This interview had two foci: ISKCON and Tulsi Gabbard's Connection to Krishna Hinduism and his new academic book on music and its role in psychedelics states. Gelberg was a Krishna devotee for 17 years and has written about his experiences with the cult and why he exited. He is now a successful photographer and author. We discussed the more recent finding that Tulsi Gabbard, nominated by Trump to be Director of National Intelligence, shows ties to Krishna Hinduism and ISKCON. Chris Butler, who is the guru of Tulsi Gabbard, was a disciple of the Krishna movement and Prabhupada. The group is known for its homophobia. “The Krishna movement also is very misogynistic. They try to hide that. They don't like talking about it. They know it's not popular, but if you go to Prabhupada's books, he repeats what he learned from the Hindu tradition about women being lesser and needing to be always under the control of a man and less spiritually adept than men are” Steven said. He then expressed concerns about ties with this organization and what that may mean by Gabbard's beliefs around these topics. In addition to his spiritual and academic education after leaving the cult, Gelberg continued to tune into an evolving “Psychedelic Renaissance” as the government began to loosen regulations allowing for legitimate clinical studies and inspiring the creation, by growing numbers of colleges and universities, of programs and centers for the study of psychedelics and their therapeutic effects. Today, we are in the middle of a sea change in the perception and use of psychedelics unlike anything that has occurred in recent decades and probably going back many centuries, at least in Western history. In fact, one probably has to go back to the early Christian era to see psychedelics so commonly used and accessible. And while there are a lot of great books that have been written on the subject over the last five decades, it's not easy to find a good general overview that is fully contemporary. Sean Lawlor's new work, The Psychedelic Revival, is one of the books that is trying to fill that void. Sean is a therapist, and a writer, in my home state of Colorado. I was thrilled to get him on the podcast to talk about one of my favorites subjects these days - the nature, influence, and impact of psychedelics on individuals and culture.
As the psychedelic renaissance continues to spread throughout the West, we learn more about these substances and experiences every day. But are we losing the important ancestral teachings and Indigenous knowledge that got us here? In this episode, Kyle interviews Alonso Del Río: author, musician, filmmaker, founder of the Center for Healing and Consciousness Studies (Ayahuasca Ayllu), and facilitator with 45 years of experience largely under the framework of the Shipibo tradition. Together with translator, Francisco Rivarola, they have developed a course called “Ancestral Teachings for the Psychedelic Renaissance,” which aims to be both an honoring of knowledge that has safeguarded these traditions, and a bridge between that wisdom and our Western frameworks, teaching ancestral traditions (largely Shipibo and Incan-Peruvian), the roles and function of dietas, the less talked-about dangers of brujeria (witchcraft), holistic frameworks for dealing with mystical experiences, and the connection between spirituality and responsibility towards nature. The course features 20 hours of Del Río's teachings (with subtitles) and is the first time they've been made available to the general public. He talks about: The importance of following guidelines when working with ayahuasca, and how Westerners often don't respect the rigor required to do it right The different types of healers in the Shipibo tradition, from good and bad to the “Ascended Master,” who transcends physical limits and is incapable of causing harm The potential for ayahuasca to be weaponized, how often this happens, and the risks for Westerners who aren't aware How the consciousness level of a person can be related to the emotions that that person allows themselves to have How the expansion of consciousness is healing in itself and more! Ancestral Teachings for the Psychedelic Renaissance is a self-paced course that can be taken at any time, so if you're interested, take advantage of early bird pricing and check it out in the Psychedelic Education Center now! Matt Johnson is the Susan Hill Ward Professor of Psychedelics and Consciousness and a professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins University. As stated on the Hopkins' website, Matt "is one of the world's most published scientists on the human effects of psychedelics, and has conducted seminal research in the behavioral economics of drug use, addiction, and risk behavior."During our conversation, Matt talks about the resistance and skepticism he faced in attempting to study psychedelics for therapeutic purposes, herd mentality within academia, and the effectiveness of psychedelics in mitigating human suffering, specifically in cancer patient's end-of-life anxiety, treatment-resistant depression, nicotine addiction, and alcohol addiction. He also talks about the state of mental healthcare in America and the life and work of one of his colleagues, the late Roland Griffins.Matt has been a pioneer in the psychedelic renaissance, and I believe that his commitment to independent-thinking and freedom of thought, determination in the face of skepticism, and openness to being wrong can be a model for any ambitious person attempting to do original, important, and potentially world-changing work and research.
Deep work involves confronting the shadow confronting the darkness. That's where our most extraordinary power and greatest resilience come from. Psychedelic coach, entrepreneur, and advocate for safe psychedelic practices Paul Austin(@PaulAustin3w) shares his in-depth knowledge of how different medicines can help us heal and transform. " I think entrepreneurship is art. Are we creating with precision, beauty, and an artistic kind of good sense and integrity? We really should be aiming to do things at the highest, most excellent level." -Paul Austin Key Takeaways: MicroDose: Navigating everyday reality with microdosing offers a subtle shift in perception where one may notice a slight alteration in consciousness without losing track of time or reality. Individuals can maintain precision, awareness, and understanding, effectively navigating their daily lives. Psychedelics' Differential Impact on the Brain: LSD primarily affects the dopaminergic system, enhancing focus, attention, and motivation. In contrast, psilocybin mainly targets the serotonergic system, promoting feelings of presence, somatics, and contentment. Understanding these differences is crucial in harnessing the benefits of each substance. Psychedelics and Building Resilience: When approached with intention, guidance, and responsibility, psychedelics serve as powerful tools for fostering resilience and aiding individuals in learning, growing, and adapting while facilitating profound personal development. With clear purpose and intentionality, psychedelics can positively impact countless individuals. 3rd Wave Psychedelics: Emerging Frontiers: The "third wave" of psychedelics represents an evolving era characterized by refined approaches, advanced research, and mainstream integration. This phase emphasizes responsible usage, therapeutic applications, and cultural acceptance. As the movement progresses, it promises further insights into the therapeutic potential and societal implications of psychedelics. Aleem Maqbool meets Richard Butler, who describes a new-found connection with Jesus during an Ayahuasca retreat in Mexico, after discovering spirituality through meditation. Some psychedelic drugs, like the plant-based DMT found in the ayahuasca drink, have been the subject of medical trials for their help with mental health conditions such as depression, with some successful results. But alongside their medical potential is, for some, a connection between their use and spirituality. To discuss what might be going on, the potential and the dangers of the so-called psychedelic renaissance, Aleem is joined by a fascinating panel. Rev Rita Powell is an Episcopal Priest who has taken magic mushrooms as part of a University trial in the US, Dr Ben Sessa is a psychiatrist involved in psychedelic research here in the UK and Dr David Luke, Associate Professor at the University of Greenwich, explores spirituality, psychedelics and ‘exceptional human experiences' in his work.Opening Music: Ayahuasca Icaros - Medicine (Cures For All) Producer: Rebecca Maxted Assistant Producer: James Leesley

Coffee is the most widely consumed mind-altering plant product in the world. The human species arose in or near the Rift Valley in East Africa, the northern edge of which abuts the forests of Ethiopia in which the coffee plants originated. The drunk monkey hypothesis proposes that human consciousness was born when our ancestors ingested fermented grapes. The stoned ape hypothesis suggests that the consciousness is due to proto humans consuming magic mushrooms. In the first half of two-part episode, Mark Plotkin suggests that the human mind developed when these primates ate coffee berries, whose caffeine inspired both their thinking and their creativity.

Today's Raise the Line guest, Dr. Megan Meyer, has a pretty simple message for proponents of psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) who are concerned that demand for therapists will outstrip supply in the coming years: don't overlook the largest group of mental health providers in the nation. “Social workers provide more mental health services than psychologists, psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses combined and we're embedded everywhere. I don't think the psychedelic renaissance can actually achieve its aims without us,” says Meyer, who is an associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work. Meyers adds that social workers also happened to be well-equipped for PAT because they're trained to act as guides in helping clients find their own voice and not impose their own perspectives or biases. Getting large numbers trained will require collaboration across disciplines, universities and training institutes such as the project she's working on with colleagues at the university's Schools of Pharmacy and Nursing to survey social workers and nurses regarding their current knowledge and training needs related to psychedelics. Join host Michael Carrese for an expansive conversation about the role social workers can play in minimizing the risks and realizing the potential of psychedelics including issues of bias and diversity, community-based models of post-therapy integration and learning from the practices of indigenous societies.Mentioned in this episode: https://www.ssw.umaryland.edu/

Welcome to part two of The Ethnobotany of Beer! This week, we continue to explore the question on everyone's mind these days: did civilization invent beer, or did beer invent civilization? And then we help solve a cold case: did ancient Africans know and use antibiotics? And why are we asking this in a discussion of beer? And is there really a 10 CD set comprised entirely of German beer drinking songs? And what did the late Frank Zappa say – and sing – about beer? Works Cited Appleton, Frank. New developments in the treatment of mental health challenges have been painfully slow to arrive. Talk therapy, lithium, prozac, electroshock therapy have all developed in the past 150 years. There have been a number of new medications developed but each has its own profile of positive and negative benefits. And few are highly effective (i.e., help more than 50% of the population they are intended to serve). In the past 10 years, however, there have been some noticeable improvements from some unsuspecting sources. These include psilocybin, ketamine, vagal nerve stimulation, Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and MDMA. Tune in to this fascinating conversation with Dr. Rebecca Allen, who heads up the Seattle Neuropsychiatric Treatment Center which is comprised of 5 treatment centers throughout Washington. Recent research out of Johns Hopkins, published in the prestigious journal Nature, found that critical windows of learning were re-opened in mice for 2,3 and 4 weeks depending on which psychedelic drug they were administered (and no, I have no idea how you discover the proper dosage of psilocybin for a mouse!). The mice were given either ketamine, MDMA, psilocybin, LSD or ibogaine. Ketamine kept the social reward learning period active for 48 hours, psilocybin and MDMA opened the critical learning window for two weeks, LSD for 3 weeks and ibogaine opened it for four weeks. This duration aligns loosely with the self-reported after effects of each psychedelic drug in humans. This post-treatment period could offer a valuable window of opportunity for maintaining the learning state. It appears that these drugs impact the RNA and thus, the genetic level, turning on or off genes associated with social learning. So these drugs seem to be impacting at a spiritual level, an interpersonal level, a cognitive level, a neurological level and at a genetic level. It is research such as this (as well as research in larger mammals, i.e., humans) that has heralded a new age in the treatment now called the Psychedelic Renaissance. Topics Covered In This Episode:Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). For which mental health diagnoses is this treatment used? What is its efficacy?Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). For which mental health disorders is this prescribed? What is its rate of success?Ketamine therapy. For what has it been shown to be helpful? Effectiveness rates?Psilocybin (magic mushrooms). What disorders show promising results here? What percentage of the population responds positively to them?Vagal nerve stimulation (VNS). What does this help?MDMA (Street names: ecstasy or molly). What about the recent excitement around MDMA for healing? What disorders are responsive to MDMA? Rachel Harris, PhD joins us to talk about her new book, Swimming In The Sacred Swimming in the Sacred offers a revelatory look into the past half-century of psychedelics use via in-depth interviews Harris conducted with women elders who have worked underground guiding sacred entheogenic journeys to cultivate insight, healing, and spiritual development. Specifically, we talk about working with unseen worlds and unseen others; thin veils, absorption, and being accidentally overdosed by psychedelics; the uncanny connection between guide and journeyer during ceremony; and how psychedelic guiding work is NOT therapy and how therapy and guiding are two different skill sets. Furthermore, we talk about the complexity of good dosing; the value of lower doses and the risks of putting larger doses on a pedestal; the strange emerging phenomenon of “competitive ego deathing”; and learning to work with life in a bigger way by learning to let our psychedelic insights work on us over time. We talk about the risks of harm and abuse in both under- and above-ground psychedelic therapy; the difference between certification and qualification; how we lose our capacity to properly skill psychedelic guides in our rush to certify as many as possible to meet a massive demand; how to assess if a provider is trustworthy and skilled; and why psychedelic therapists NEED to experience psychedelics themselves. ... Welcome to another episode of The Tim Ferriss Show, where it is my job to deconstruct world-class performers to tease out the routines, habits, et cetera that you can apply to your own life. This is a special inbetweenisode, which serves as a recap of the episodes from last month. It features a short clip from each conversation in one place so you can easily jump around to get a feel for the episode and guest.Based on your feedback, this format has been tweaked and improved since the first recap episode. For instance, @hypersundays on Twitter suggested that the bios for each guest can slow the momentum, so we moved all the bios to the end. See it as a teaser. Something to whet your appetite. I wrote about the health benefits of using continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) more than ten years ago in The 4-Hour Body. At the time, CGMs were primitive and hard to use. Levels has now made this technology, and the unique insights that come from it, easy and available to everyone. Levels is making glucose monitoring simple, helping you see how food affects your health through real-time feedback. I started tracking my glucose years ago to learn more about what I should and shouldn't be eating (including quantities, time of day, etc.), based on objective data from my own, unique physiology. Keeping my blood sugar stable is critical to my daily and long-term health and performance goals. Furthermore, poor glucose control is associated with a number of chronic conditions like diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, and obesity. It's important. If you're interested in learning more about Levels and trying a CGM yourself, go to Levels.link/Tim.*This episode is also brought to you by LMNT! What is LMNT? It's a delicious, sugar-free electrolyte drink mix. I've stocked up on boxes and boxes of this and usually use it 1–2 times per day. LMNT is formulated to help anyone with their electrolyte needs and perfectly suited to folks following a keto, low-carb, or Paleo diet. If you are on a low-carb diet or fasting, electrolytes play a key role in relieving hunger, cramps, headaches, tiredness, and dizziness.LMNT came up with a very special offer for you, my dear listeners. For a limited time, you can get a free LMNT Sample Pack with any purchase. This special offer is available here: DrinkLMNT.com/Tim.*This episode is also brought to you by Athletic Greens. I get asked all the time, “If you could use only one supplement, what would it be?” My answer is usually AG1 by Athletic Greens, my all-in-one nutritional insurance. I recommended it in The 4-Hour Body in 2010 and did not get paid to do so. I do my best with nutrient-dense meals, of course, but AG further covers my bases with vitamins, minerals, and whole-food-sourced micronutrients that support gut health and the immune system. Right now, Athletic Greens is offering you their Vitamin D Liquid Formula free with your first subscription purchase—a vital nutrient for a strong immune system and strong bones.
