23. Doctor Who Review: Rosa

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 21, 2018 30:13

The BlogtorWhoCast is back again to review the very latest episode of Doctor Who. 'Rosa' sees a retelling of the story of Rosa Parks in Montgomery, Alabama. Although the episode isn't as violent and brutal as it potentially could've been, there is something very uncomfortable about the situation. Bedwyr goes so far as to call it the most alien environment the TARDIS has ever taken the time travellers to. Susan picks up on some of the more comedic elements, the Steve Jobs reference being particularly amusing. Both reviewers were less impressed with the villain Krasko but huge praise is given to the scene of Ryan and Yas in the alleyway. Ultimately, given the tough subject matter, 'Rosa' proves to be an important piece of Doctor Who. Keep up to date with the BlogtorWhoCast by following @BlogtorWhoCast on Twitter. 22. Doctor Who Review: The Ghost Monument

In this latest edition Bedwyr and Susan review ‘The Ghost Monument’. Whilst Susan has plenty of positivity for the episode, Bedwyr makes an unfortunate comparison with 'The Beast Below'. Things do however start with a positive and a wonderful new title sequence. There is also praise for the characters introduced in the episode. Similarly, the race across the 12 systems was also solid. Both Bedwyr and Susan were a little surprised with another mention of the Stenza. Last week, they agreed that T'zim-Sha was one of the weaker elements. The planet called 'Desolation' is also debated with particularly scathing criticism of the robot guards. Finally of course the new TARDIS interior is discussed with a less than glowing response for a few reasons. Keep up to date with the BlogtorWhoCast by following @BlogtorWhoCast on Twitter. The BlogtorWhoCast is back to review the very latest episode of Doctor Who. 'The Woman Who Fell to Earth' saw a new era for the show. But what did Bedwyr and Susan make of it all? Our podcast duo start out by giving their overall reaction to the new episode. One is positive. The other not so much, but probably not for the reasons you might expect. Together they then breakdown the whole episode. First of all they discus the new friends of the Doctor; Ryan, Graham, Grace and Yas. All of these characters proved popular but would Jodie Whittaker's portrayal of The Doctor? Plus we had a new costume and sonic screwdriver to reveal. Those scenes are also discussed before attention moves towards the dramatic conclusion. Finally, Bedwyr and Susan ponder how the adventure will move forward next week.

Bedwyr and Susan are back with their brand of Doctor Who related conversation. In this episode our duo conclude their reviews of stories from Series 10 with 'The Doctor Falls'. There is huge praise for Peter Capaldi's penultimate performance. However, there are a number of problems with the episode that both Bedwyr and Susan struggled with, resulting in an interesting discussion for the BlogtorWhoCast. Bedwyr and Susan return with their brand of Doctor Who related conversation. Although neither can quite work out what the episode title means, the story proves to be a huge hit. Bedwyr even goes out on a limb and declares it to be one of the best pieces of Doctor Who that he has ever seen. He even suggests that it tops the critically acclaimed 'Heaven Sent'. Both agree that whilst you see the direction that the episode is taking, it is the journey that it takes you on which makes it so memorable. Equally, if you did not know the history of the Cybermen then the story is just as gripping and dramatic. Keep up to date with the BlogtorWhoCast by following @BlogtorWhoCast on Twitter. Bedwyr and Susan are back with their brand of Doctor Who related conversation. Firstly the duo reflect on the return of Rona Munro. With 'The Eaters of Light' Munro became the first Doctor Who writer to author a tale for both the classic and new incarnations of the show. Naturally our two hosts who belong to that Classic era take the opportunity to reflect on 'Survival', Monro's first story, before turning their attention to 'The Eaters of Light'. Bedwyr and Susan are back with their brand of Doctor Who related conversation. To continue their reviews of stories from Series 10 the duo move onto 'Empress of Mars'. The story starts with some peculiar words on Mars and a clumsy device used to get rid of Nardole and question the intended position of this tale within the series. Both are however pleased to see the Ice Warriors back and for a trip to their home planet. Throw into that sci-fi mixture some Victorian soldiers and you have a slightly bizarre but thoroughly entertaining Doctor Who episode. Together Bedwyr and Susan discuss the design of Iraxxa and new Ice Warrior weaponry. They also cover the debate that surrounded the depiction of a coloured soldier in the British Army of the Victorian era. As two connoisseurs of the classic series our hosts were also delighted by the return of Alpha Centauri. This also saw the return of Ysanne Churchman who returned to Doctor Who at the age of 92! Finally the pair also reflect on seeing more Ice Warriors than ever before and Bedwyr offers a piece of information from behind the scenes. With Mat providing an authorised absence to attend the book signing at Forbidden Planet, Bedwyr and Susan are left to reminisce about the Target books of old. Four modern stories, plus ‘City of Death’, have been novelised. These are episodes that can be watched again and again. Yet, even in this modern world, there is a place for novelisations of these stories. Of course, Bedwyr and Susan remember a time when the Target books were the only way to revisit old stories. Together the duo share memories of specific titles and tell stories of story books. Another element of the successful range was the artwork that adorned the covers. Despite a move to photo covers in the 1980’s, the artwork creations remain the best, showcased in a recent exhibition at the Cartoon Museum in London. It was there that Susan interviewed Chris Achilleos a link to which is below. Enjoy this trip into classic Doctor Who literature and be sure to send us photos of your collections. The Baby Lifeline red carpet event is nearly here and Susan reminds listeners how they can support the charity. It will be a great evening and listeners of the BlogtorWhoCast can be a part of it with tickets still available. The main topic for this episode is the Doctor Who Classic DVD range. Following the release of 'The Enemy of the World' Special Edition this week the team reflect on the range as a whole. Bedwyr believes that the range serves as an important archive of how television production has changed over the years. Mat and Susan share their highlights from the range, including the 'Trials and Tribulations' documentary. Together the trio come up with a list of Classic DVD recommendations for new collectors. Bedwyr, Susan and Mat return with their brand of Doctor Who related conversation. Firstly the team discuss the Season 12 Blu-Ray release. They debate the use of the new Doctor Who logo on the cover, which may be subject to change. This logo has symbolised the new era of Jodie Whittaker but is included on the provisional cover for this set. Mat also raises an interesting point, pondering if the logo will have to be retained should a new production team come in and change it on other merchandise in a few years. Discussion then turns to the stories of Season 12 beginning with 'Robot'. The K1 robot proved a hit for Bedwyr and Susan enjoyed the close connection to the Third Doctor era which had just concluded. 'The Ark in Space' triggers body horror imagery and a comparison with a brutal horror movie franchise. 'The Sontaran Experiment' and 'Revenge of the Cybermen' both receive positivity. Unfortunately, the gap between Cybermen stories means the portrayal of the cyborg monstrosities is flawed. Of course, ‘Genesis of the Daleks’ remains the highlight of the season. The trio also point to the connections to later stories, including tales of the Time War, first established here. Finally, the team ponder which other seasons of Doctor Who they are looking forward to seeing. Early contenders for the next release include Season 6, Season 16 and Season 25. Firstly the team discuss the Series 3 Blu-Ray steelbook release and subsequent delay. In sadder news the passing of Peter Miles is reflected upon. Unsurprisingly his role as Nyder in 'Genesis of the Daleks' is the standout. For the main event of Episode 12 Team BlogtorWhoCast discuss the Monk trilogy, a series of episodes in Series 10 which encompassed 'Extremis', 'The Pyramid at the End of the World' and 'The Lie of the Land'. Topics for debate include simulations, the portrayal of scientists and how the world will end. The 'fake' regeneration is also mentioned and how the concept of regeneration is now broken. There are also positives with praise for the attempts at trying something fresh with an 'Invasion Earth' story. However, the team admit that things didn't quite come together in these three stories.
