STEVE HATCHER on twenty years of "New Who"First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on March 23rd 2025.This week, perhaps rather astonishingly, March the 26th will bring with it the twentieth anniversary of DOCTOR WHO returning to our television screens in its shiny new incarnation after a rather lengthy break which found it pretty much adrift in the time continuum for over a decade and a half, despite the odd big night in to entertain us with.During those “wilderness years” there had been several glimpses of the old Time Lord who simply refused to fade away, and the show had been managing to flourish in other formats, but it was only when RUSSELL T DAVIES presented his own uniquely updated take on the show, now featuring CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON in the lead role alongside BILLIE PIPER as ROSE TYLER, that the true potential of this once hugely neglected science fiction masterpiece was rediscovered, and became something of an unexpected television smash hit in the year 2005.Since then the show has become something of a cornerstone of the television schedules, not least around Christmastime and continues to go in and out of fashion and divide its fans and enemies almost in equal measure, with several fine actors DAVID TENNANT, MATT SMITH, PETER CAPALDI, JODIE WHITTAKER, and NCUTI GATWA taking on the role across the last two decades. This week we welcome back our old friend STEVE HATCHER who specifically asked if he could come back to talk about DOCTOR WHO for this anniversary, which prompted what I hope you will find an enjoyable meander around the many lives of the Time Lord and their fans.PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Clayton from 'Men Who Like Men Who Like Movies' joins Sean for a brand new side-series. The Donna Noble Chronicles will explore every Doctor Who episode which starred Catherine Tate as Donna, from 'The Runaway Bride' to 'The End of Time'. Discussion Points: -Catherine Tate's career before she joined Doctor Who. -Donna Noble's character in her first appearance. -The fantastic cold opening. -The reason for the absence of Bernard Cribbins. -The cut scene regarding Rose Tyler. -Clayton says highway, and Sean immediately corrects him. -The comedic-pairing of David Tennant and Catherine Tate. -'Save the Cat Moments'. -Donna's decision to walk away. Raised Questions: -How long ago was 2006? -Was Donna Noble slightly too 'over-the-top' or 'pitch perfect' in her first appearance? -Who would be happy being ripped out of their wedding day? -Is Sean re-treading old ground? -Did you know Donna wasn't meant to come back? -Are you over Doomsday yet? -Did you notice the Bridget Jones reference? -Is a new flavour Pringle really that exciting? -Do you want someone to make it snow for you? Shout-out to Cinnamon Toast Crunch, who joined Sean for a YouTube Livestream discussing Doctor Who Series Four. Random Recommendations: -The Catherine Tate Show (2004-2009). Thanks for Listening! When the Doctor Who television series rebooted on BBC in 2005, the producers were looking for a very specific type of person to play The Doctor's human traveling companion. They wanted a young actress to connect to a new generation of viewers, but also relatably perform the role of an ordinary girl whose adventures with The Doctor connect her to what makes her extraordinary. The selection of actress Billie Piper for the part of Rose Tyler was especially inspired; after all, Billie had been a pop star by age 15, only to walk away from a life she didn't want - and toward the one she did. Tread Perilously goes back to the beginning of the DoctorDonna with the 2006 Doctor Who Christmas special "The Runaway Bride." The Doctor's attempt to dwell on Rose Tyler's departure gets interrupted when Donna Noble materializes aboard the TARDIS in a wedding dress. She was moments from getting married and is in quite a state to now be on a spaceship with a very thin and maudlin Time Lord. Will The Doctor get her to the church on time? Will the Santa roboforms from the previous year's Christmas invasion get in the way? And will Donna's fiancé prove to be a poor choice? Erik and Justin discuss the latest Gallifrey One announcements and the fate of Dead Again. They get lost in the weeds discussing obscure media, the ghost of Arthur Fonzarelli, and the Babylon 5 hot shot pilot from Season 2. They also find things to like about "The Giggle." Justin's attempt to find the episode reveals the limits of technology. Wilf's absence during the wedding gets some fanon (and the real world reason for it). The pair try to figure out Nerys and warn writers away from employing Jack the Ripper in their work. A youthful David Tennant inspires feelings of mortality and Erik can't stop casting new actors in old TV shows reboots.

It was only a year into the Doctor Who revival of 2005 that David Tennant took over as the titular Time Lord. Would the show survive changing its lead so soon when it had barely found its feet? Four years later, we scarcely had to wonder, as arguably the most popular incarnation of the new era (and possibly all time) said goodbye. (Well, technically he said "I don't want to go", but still...) With David Tennant set to return, albeit briefly, as the 14th Doctor in 2023's three-part 60th anniversary special, Vinnk and Sean look back at his original, trail-blazing run that began 18 years ago on Christmas Day, and preview what's to come as he dons his trademark Converse once more. Starring: * David Tennant - The Doctor * Billie Piper - Rose Tyler * John Barrowman - Captain Jack Harkness * Freema Agyeman - Dr. Martha Jones * Derek Jacobi - Professor Yana * John Simm - The Master * Catherine Tate - Donna Noble Available on Max. Season 4 of The Moment is on its way! But it is not quite ready yet. In the meantime, we're revisiting some episodes from previous seasons of The Moment. This week, we revisit episode 2.03 with Deb Stanish (http://www.themomentpod.com/guests/deb-stanish), to discuss a moment from 2005's The Parting of the Ways, the finale of Christopher Eccleston's first and only season as the Doctor. We discuss how Rose's perspective really spoke to Deb's personal history, the Doctor's history of putting companions' safety before their agency, and the aspects of the scene that some fans find troublingly classist. Special Guest: Deb Stanish.

When Doctor Who relaunched in 2005 on the BBC after a failed (but serviceable) Fox US movie/pilot barely a decade earlier, many of us didn't know what to expect. We didn't expect Christopher Eccleston, and we certainly didn't expect Russel T Davies and his eccentric touch, but both rocketed the franchise into a new golden age the likes of which could only have been imagined by fans of the classic series. Vinnk and Sean, along with guest host Miles (from sister podcast Casual Trek) relive the reboot, ostensibly without the benefit of rose-colored glasses, and not at all influenced by RTD's return to the remade franchise nearly two decades later in 2023. Starring: * Christopher Eccleston - The Doctor * Billie Piper - Rose Tyler * John Barrowman - Captain Jack Harkness * Noel Clarke - Mickey Smith * Camille Coduri - Jackie Tyler Available on HBO Max (for now), Amazon, BritBox, and Disney+ (eventually). I am BEYOND EXCITED that we are joined by my OG Idol, Billie Piper, who made the first album I ever bought - fun fact! Believe it or not, Billie first burst into our lives 25 years ago - so this is technically the Silver Jubilee of Queen Billie, which should be a national holiday, right? As a 15 year old popstar, Billie became the youngest person ever to go straight to number one with the eternal bop, Because We Want To before going on to land two more number one singles with Girlfriend and Day & Night. How her hit, Honey 2 The Bee wasn't ever a number one is still an injustice that haunts me until this day. But here we are… Billie then turned to acting with the comeback of Doctor Who starring as the Doctor's assistant, Rose Tyler opposite Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant and The Secret Diary of A Call Girl. Billie even continued to set records with her new career path by winning all six of the possible best stage actress awards, including an Olivier award, for her stage debut in Yerma. Now Billie is back with the second season of the BAFTA nominated TV show, I Hate Suzie, which she co-created with Succession writer, Lucy Prebble. If you haven't watched the first season of the show, it follows the former child star, Suzie Pickles as her life implodes when private images of her leak online. And let me tell you RIGHT NOW, the second season is just as good as the first with more twists and turns for our anti-hero, Suzie. I Hate Suzie Too is available on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW from 20 December.Today Billie joins us to talk about being a horny dancer (same here!) - tis the season, after all - and how exploring anxiety and mental health on I Hate Suzie has impacted her own well being. Billie also opens up about how seeing her 14 year old son grow up has made her reflect further on her own teenage stardom and the advice she wishes she could go back and give her popstar self. She also shares some great words about balance and pressure which I think we all need to hear and will relate to, and about finding a new level of confidence turning 40 this year. Billie Piper is still THE coolest person on the planet in my mind, so I hope you love this chat just as much as me as it really shows just how this icon has managed to stay relevant for a quarter of a century across so many disciplines. Let's Celebrate the complicated legacy of Susan Foreman, the Doctor's Granddaughter and First Companion!I'll discuss Susan's (perhaps unfair) reputation as "The Screamer," what makes Susan special as a companion, her unique relationship to the Doctor, Mentor/Mentee relationships generally between the Doctor and Companion, the problematic aspects of Susan's development and departure, the deliberate parallels between her departure and Rose Tyler's, and her overall legacy within the history of the show. One day, she shall come back. Yes, she shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties."Look, if they don't understand, they can't, they can't hurt us at all. I understand these people better than you. Their minds reject things they don't understand." (to the Doctor)"I love your school. I loved England in the twentieth century. The last five months have been the happiest of my life." (to Ian and Barbara)-An Unearthly Child "Oh, look, Grandfather. I understand the Sensorites. They're timid little people. Because their minds and mine can communicate sometimes, they trust me." "Grandfather and I don't come from Earth. It's been ages since we've seen our planet. It's quite like Earth. But at night, the sky is a burnt orange, and leaves on the trees are bright silver."The Sensorites"I never felt there was any time or place that I belonged to. I've never had any real identity.""One day you will. There will come a time when you're forced to stop travelling, and you'll arrive somewhere."-The Dalek Invasion of EarthNEXT TIME: Serial #11 The Rescue (Episodes: "The Powerful Enemy" & "Desperate Measures")Special thanks to Cathlyn "Happigal" Driscoll for providing the beautiful artwork for this podcast. We bid adieu to the lovely Rose Tyler, and continue the theme of companion exits by taking a look at how Adric shuffled off this mortal coil. The Doctor ends these episodes as he once began, alone. Also: Daleks versus Cybermen?!?!
