Bill Potts an exceptional individual whose story not only stands as a symbol of resilience for cancer survivors but is also enriched by an unlikely friendship with Winter the Dolphin. Bill C. Potts, a five-time cancer survivor, has recently launched a compelling guide titled "Up for the Fight: How to Advocate for Yourself as You Battle Cancer―from a Five-Time Survivor." "Up for the Fight" is not just a book; it's a comprehensive guide for readers to navigate the complexities of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Bill shares his experiences with empathy and authenticity, offering actionable advice and uplifting stories. Covering everything from self-advocacy and building a support team to managing side effects and finding strength in setbacks, this book provides a holistic perspective on the cancer journey. To provide your audience with insight into Bill's remarkable journey, I've formulated ten thought-provoking questions that promise to fuel a meaningful conversation: What motivated you to share your personal cancer journey through "Up for the Fight"? As a five-time cancer survivor, what advice would you give to those struggling to maintain hope during their battle? How can readers effectively advocate for themselves in the complex world of cancer treatment? What essential qualities should individuals look for when assembling a supportive care team? How does maintaining a positive mindset contribute to a person's overall well-being during cancer treatment? Could you share a story from the book that illustrates the importance of emotional and mental self-care during the cancer journey? What practical steps can individuals take to make their treatment days more comfortable? How can family and friends best support a loved one with cancer without overwhelming them? "Up for the Fight" emphasizes recalibrating priorities after cancer. Can you provide guidance on how readers can approach this process? What message do you hope readers take away from "Up for the Fight" and your experiences with cancer? Published by Page Two Press on September 13, 2022, "Up for the Fight" is available on Kindle for $9.99 and in paperback for $21. This 208-page guide encapsulates invaluable insights, practical advice, and empowering stories for anyone facing the challenges of cancer. His journey is intricately intertwined with the lessons learned from Winter the Dolphin, significantly influencing his approach to life and cancer. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

We've spent the last twelve weeks enjoying some unexpected extra time with Peter Capaldi and friends, and so it's finally time to kick back and chat about what we've loved, what we've learned, and (inevitably) who we'd snog. It's the Series 10 Retrospective. Notes and links Thank you to the people who contributed their questions: Luke Hobbs, Si Hart and David Kitchen. And remember that we have a shiny new-ish Bluesky account, which is the best way to follow us online these days. And for the very last time, probably, we reference Friend from the Future, a promotional short designed to introduce Bill Potts, first broadcast during Match of the Day on 23 April 2016, nearly a year before this season began. You can see the entire short here. And just as a reminder, the Jenny Laird Award goes to a season or era's most puzzling creative choice, and the Bonnie Langford goes to someone or something that is surprisingly and delightfully good. Follow us Nathan is on Bluesky at @nathanbottomley.com, Todd is at @toddbeilby.bsky.social and James is at @ohjamessellwood.bsky.social. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow Flight Through Entirety on Bluesky, as well as on Mastodon, X and Facebook. Our website is at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll think of the right words later. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. 500 Year Diary is our latest new Doctor Who podcast, going back through the history of the show and examining new themes and ideas. Its first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. The Three-Handed Game makes a triumphant return to your podcatcher with Part 2 of its The Pop Explosion triptych, Build a Better Mousetrap, in which Cathy Gale joins a motorcycle gang which is threatened by witches, which is a thing that basically happened all the time in the 1960s. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. Nathan and Joe took the week off this week, but last week, we enjoyed a widely-reviled episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine called Ferengi Love Songs.

This week, we're joined by Melvin Peña for a day trip to the Thames Frost Fair in 1814, expecting a jolly afternoon of daydrinking, sword swallowers and juicy sheep hearts, only to find ourselves tied to a bomb and engaged in an intriguing discussion about race, class, death and the ethics of killing. It's Thin Ice. Notes and links Once again, Friend from the Future was a promotional short designed to introduce Bill Potts. Nathan makes fun of the fact that at the end of the short, the on-screen caption reads Introducing Pearl Mackie asBill. You can see the entire short, including that unfortunate typo, here. Like Martha before her and Ruby after her, Bill is concerned that treading on a butterfly in the past will change the present in terrible ways. That concern comes from Ray Bradbury's 1952 short story A Sound of Thunder, which you should really just go off and read right now. In Bong Joon-ho's post-apocalyptic film Snowpiercer (2013), the poor people who live in the back of the train are fed on glistening black protein bars, which we discover are made from ground-up cockroaches. Flight Through Entirety only occasionally advocates for political violence (see Episode 182: The Icy Moral High Ground), but this week we are pleased to bring you this clip of neo-Nazi Richard Spencer being punched in the head during an interview on ABC-TV in January 2017. Melvin alludes to the Slave Compensation Act 1837, which authorised the payment of about £20 million in compensation to slave owners in the British colonies. This sum was finally paid off when the British Government restructured its debt in 2015. (The people who had been enslaved didn't receive any compensation, of course.) Follow us Nathan is on Bluesky at @nathanbottomley.bsky.social, Todd is on X at @toddbeilby, and here's Melvin's profile on about.me. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow Flight Through Entirety on Mastodon and Bluesky, as well as on X and Facebook. Our website is at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we won't tell you what's in those fish pies that you're so looking forward to for dinner this evening. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. 500 Year Diary is our latest new Doctor Who podcast, going back through the history of the show and examining new themes and ideas. It's first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. Brendan and Bjay's gaming poscast is called The Bjay BJ Game Show. In the most recent episode, they discuss The Talos Principle (2014), a puzzle-based game with a sentient robot protagonist, which raises questions about identity, consciousness and religion. Brendan, Richard and Steven have released another episode of their Avengers podcast The Three Handed Game. It's the third episode of their triptych The Cool War, covering an early Season 2 episode called The Decapod, featuring Julie Stevens as Venus Smith. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. Last week, they dropped in on the Q Continuum in an episode of Star Trek: Voyager called Death Wish.

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

We're back for the first episode of Peter Capaldi's final year — a simple, well-told tale of Girl Meets Girl, Girl Becomes Puddle, Girl Loses Girl and, finally, Girl Goes off with Her Tutor on a Series of Adventures in Time and Space. Welcome aboard, Bill Potts. It's The Pilot. Notes and links Friend from the Future was a promotional short designed to introduce Bill Potts first broadcast during Match of the Day on 23 April 2016, nearly a year before this episode aired. You can see the entire short here. Peter mentions the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Skin of Evil as another TV episode containing a high-concept puddle. It's famously not very good, as Joe and Nathan discovered in this episode of Untitled Star Trek Project. You'll be relieved and probably unsurprised to learn that Nathan is wrong: John Peel doesn't claim that Genesis of the Daleks took place in 1831. However, TARDIS Wikia dates it as set in the 15th or 16th centuries, probably because in The Daleks, one of the Daleks claims that there were two races on Skaro 500 years ago. But the whole idea is absolutely enervating, don't you think? The squishy thing Todd mentions as a possible companion for the Doctor is, of course, Mr Huffle from The Return of Doctor Mysterio. The Doctor does apparently take it with him at the end of the story. And Pearl Mackie married her wife Kam Chhokar on 4 May this year. Here's a wedding photo from Tumblr. Douglas is Cancelled is Steven Moffat's most recent TV show — a four-part miniseries starring Hugh Bonneville, Karen Gillan and Alex Kingston, about a middle-aged male TV personality who is overheard making a sexist joke at a friend's wedding. Worth a look. Follow us Nathan is on Bluesky at @nathanbottomley.bsky.social and James is at @ohjamessellwood.bsky.social; Todd is on X as @toddbeilby. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow Flight Through Entirety on Mastodon and Bluesky, as well as on X and Facebook. Our website is at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll invent a massively high-concept backstory for you which prevents you from ever truly realising yourself as a person. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. The Blakes 7 podcast Maximum Power has been on hiatus for a while, but arrangements for the recording of Series D are well underway, and we will definitely have some new episodes for your before the end of the year. How much fun time travel is can often depend on the amount of melanin in your skin. That's one of the lessons Bill Potts learns in Thin Ice when she and the Doctor take a quick detour to Regency London. At first it looks to be a lively visit to one of the Frost Fairs on the river, but mysterious lights beckon the pair, and soon they're up to their tophats in street urchins and circus performers. Bill C. Potts is a motivational speaker, business leader, and community builder who has held executive roles at IRONMAN Group and Clearwater Marine Aquarium. He is co-founder and managing director of marketing agency Remedy 365 and a lecturer at Tulane University. An IRONMAN triathlete and a five-time cancer survivor, Bill is a long-time volunteer at his local homeless shelter and an advisory board member of the Halo House Foundation. He joined me on Uncorking a Story to discuss his memoir Up for the Fight. Key Themes The Writing Process: The writing process is a journey that requires dedication and perseverance. Just like running a marathon mile by mile, writers must tackle each sentence and follow a “training plan” to reach their desired destination. Heartbreak and Resilience: Exploring themes of heartbreak and resilience can create compelling stories that will be helpful to others. By delving into the emotions and experiences of characters who have faced loss, writers can create engaging narratives that resonate with readers. Embracing the Unavoidable: When writing about sensitive topics like cancer, it is important to address them honestly and authentically. Feedback from publishers and editors can provide valuable insights and help shape the narrative to create a meaningful book. Turning Pain into Purpose: Finding one's purpose often involves introspection and seeking guidance from others. By sharing personal experiences and helping others who are going through similar challenges, writers can turn their pain into a purposeful endeavor. Collaboration and Support: The input and support of others, such as publishers and mentors, can greatly contribute to the success of a book. Engaging in conversations and seeking guidance from trusted individuals can help writers refine their ideas and bring their stories to life. At 41, Bill Potts received a diagnosis of thyroid cancer. He listened to the recommendations from his primary care physician and didn't seek out a second opinion. It was only six months later, during a follow up visit when his doctors wanted to repeat his treatment with radioactive iodine that he began to ask questions and started to advocate for himself. He now says he would likely be dead had he not sought out a second opinion at that time. He's since learned a lot about advocating for himself with cancer as he's been diagnosed six times with cancer. He's taken what he's learned from his experiences and written Up for the Fight, a guide for newly diagnosed cancer patients, family members, and caregivers. It provides not only critical advice on dealing with the mental aspects of the disease, but also lots of practical advice about navigating the healthcare system, insurance companies, and treatments that could only come from lived experience. We spoke to Potts about why it's essential for patients to learn to advocate for themselves, how to navigate the mental and emotional aspects of the disease, and why it's important to stay motivated and celebrate small achievements along the way.

Action Plan: https://jimharshawjr.com/ACTION Free Clarity Call: https://jimharshawjr.com/APPLY It's one thing to learn how to deal with constant pain and an incurable illness. It's another to turn that pain into purpose. Five-time cancer survivor Bill Potts has managed to do exactly that despite his 20-year (and still ongoing) battle. With his determination and lifestyle, you wouldn't have even known that Bill Potts has battled cancer five times. Yes, five times.  This episode of the Success Through Failure podcast is not about cancer. It's about how you can own your journey and turn the struggle, scars, and pain into purpose. And after all these years, Bill is currently undergoing treatment for the sixth time, with number seven just a few years away. His accidental expertise led him to author "Up for the Fight: How to Advocate for Yourself as You Battle Cancer―from a Five-Time Survivor," a book on how to navigate through life after a diagnosis. For many of us, decades of surgeries, treatment, recovery, isolation are just plain unbearable, and understandably so. And yet, Bill's ability to somehow respond even better each and every day is nothing short of extraordinary. Bill Potts is a motivational speaker, business leader, community builder, and dedicated father and husband. He has held executive positions at the IRONMAN Group and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, and lectured on marketing at Tulane University, where he earned his MBA. He is currently the co-founder and a managing director of marketing agency Remedy 365 and an IRONMAN triathlete. In this episode, Bill walks us through his ongoing 20-year battle and how you can turn your own pain into purpose. Listen to Bill's story now. Bill Potts got her future-events cred via a visit to the troubled human colony depicted in Smile, one of the most gorgeous episodes of the Capaldi era. Besides a wide-eyed new companion, the story features one of Doctor Who's most reliable antagonists: servant robots that have for some reason gone homicidal. Throw in a massive colony ship and some end-of-the-world vibes and we might really have something — just as long as the social commentary on emoji is really thoughtful and not just something tossed in because it's trendy

Affiliate link included.Transcript:Graham: The Doctor arrives in Antarctica to find Vikings and a whole mass of old continuity and then faces a greater challenge when he takes Bill shopping. We'll tell you all about it as we take a look at Dr Who: The Twelfth Doctor – The Wolves of Winter. Straight ahead.Announcer:Welcome to the Classy Comics podcast where we search for the best Comics in the universe. From Boise, Idaho here is your host, Adam Graham. Host:We're now to the point in the Twelfth Doctor comics continuity where he began to travel with his series 10 companion Bill Potts and they continued on to some adventures in the comics rather than going with one-off comic-only companions. This book contains 4 issues and 2 different stories. The first is a 3-issue story the titular Wolves of Winter, where the Doctor arrives right after Vikings land in Antartica fleeing other Vikings and wanting to protect their treasure and pretty soon there are some mysterious goings on and the Doctor and the Vikings bump into the Ice Warriors and the Ice Warriors are on Earth on the trail of the flood. Now this is another continuity point, if you've been following Doctor Who, going back to the 10th Doctor era, the second to last television stories for the 10th Doctor. The Waters of Mars had the Doctor facing off against a Martian virus that took possession of human host and sought to wipe out everyone at a Mars colony and in many ways this story is before this because we're back in the time of the Vikings, a several hundred years before the events in the Waters of Mars. The Antarctic setting really does create a great sense of atmosphere particularly the way the art is laid out in this book and there is a lot going on. There is also another villain from the Doctor's past. This one from classic Doctor Who, and I won't reveal it as a big spoiler here, that shows up. I think writer Richard Menic deserves credit for managing to get this to hang together as a story with its own continuity and just really work as a story because there are some Doctor Who stories where they'll just throw out a bunch of continuity. Ooh Dalek, Ooh I Cybermen, Ooh Ice warriors, aren't you impressed but this is actually a really good story with some solid twist and some actual surprises. It does use a lot of continuity and the more that you're into Doctor Who, the more you're going to appreciate this story but I think it is absolutely a solid, well-told tale. The second story is "The Great Shopping Bill" and in this one, this is after the point in series 10 when it was revealed that Missy was what was being imprisoned in the vault. She had had a sense of death conferred on her for her crimes but the Doctor had decided to rehabilitate her by locking her in this vault and pledging to keep guard on it for as long as it took and not to go off-world, though he does fudge a bit on that during the course of series 10. At any rate, it's found that the dimensional stabilizer is failing and in order to keep the vault secure for Missy, as well as to keep Missy alive, they have to find a new one and it finally occurs, thanks to Bill's suggestion to go to the Ubermart, which is a giant intergalactic market with anything you could imagine including dimensional stabilizers. Anyway, in the store Bill finds a lost little girl and tries to get her back to her mother. However, there's confusion, robots end up chasing after them, particularly when the Doctor reports Bill missing. It's a sweet, short little story. It's a fun read, not particularly great but I think enjoyable.Well overall I thought this was actually a pretty decent volume. I don't think it was great by any means. I think that when Doctor Who comics are truly great,

This week's podcast is all about where we started - Doctor Who. We both watched the new episode ("The Pilot") and, unsurprisingly, have many opinions about the whole thing. We discuss Bill Potts, the Steven Moffat effect, where the show is headed, and much more. We are both very hopeful for what this season has to offer and will keep this conversation going as new episodes arrive. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Shannon offers up the Lego Hobbit video game as a great way to pass the time. And Becca gives us the Netflix docu-series "Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On" which, despite the unfortunate name, has a great story to tell about sex, technology, and modern relationships. In this episode, thanks to W. Eugene Smith's tape recorders, we get to experience something audiences rarely hear - the unrehearsed, imperfect, open-ended, overlong, rough-around-the-edges music that jazz players made when they got together to jam at 821 Sixth Avenue. No audience present. Just the musicians playing. The late vibes player Teddy Charles said it best in an interview: When nobody's around, and you're just by yourself, that's when the best jazz happens. Really incredible stuff. You take chances on things. The real excitement of jazz is taking chances. Whether you make it or not. You try for something even if it doesn't happen. And that's what makes Jazz really exciting. Featured in this episode are jam sessions with: 1 - Dave McKenna, piano; Fred Greenwell, sax; Bill Takas, bass; Ron Free, drums2 - Bill Potts, piano; Zoot Sims, tenor sax; Ron Free, drums3 - Paul Bley, piano; Jimmy Stevenson, bass; Roland Alexander, tenor sax; Eddie Listengart, trumpet; Lex Humphries, drums4 - Sonny Clarke, piano; other unidentified players5 - Chick Corea, piano; Jimmy Stevenson, bass; Joe Hunt, drums   This is a slightly updated version of The Jazz Loft Radio Series, which first aired on WNYC in November in 2009, in conjunction with Sam Stephenson's book “The Jazz Loft Project." We are re-distributing the entire series now on the occasion of the release of Sara Fishko's documentary, "The Jazz Loft According to W. Eugene Smith," which debuted at the New Orleans Film Festival in October of 2015.   Thanks to the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, our original partner in the production of The Jazz Loft Radio Series.  The Jazz Loft Radio Series was supported in part by a grant from The National Endowment for the Humanities; and by an award from The National Endowment for the Arts.
