What happens when twin forces, obsession and capitulation, come together? And whose story do you believe in any lovestory gone wrong? They were an unlikely couple. Greg, a post doc medicalstudent, is a planner who wants to have his career, a wife, children, a home. Anya is a free spirit, an artist living hand to mouth but passionate about her art and living a life that matters. When Greg spots her at a party, a vision dancingin a diaphanous blue shirt, blue eyes and long black hair swaying, she is like a butterfly in motion.  He is captivated. She sees in him a safe harbor. Against the odds, they start to date, their differences like the jagged edges of a puzzle that fit. The seemingly golden couple were on their way.In her new stand-alone noir, THE BUTTERFLY TRAP, Clea Simon reveals the dark undertow lying beneath the surface of their connection and how despite the signs, both Greg and Anya are committed, if not to the marriage, then to their story of it.  Told in two parts, we see them first throughGreg's eyes and then through Anya's. We witness the subtle fissures as they move forward with friends, careers and what begins to feel like the inevitability of marriage and family. Within it all flows an increasingly toxic push-pull of identity confusions and gender misapprehension that feed andfuel shocking and irrevocable acts. About the Author: Simon is the Boston Globe-bestsellingauthor of three nonfiction books and more than thirty mysteries, including World Enough and Hold Me Down, both of which were named “Must Reads” by the Massachusetts Center for the Book.  A graduate of Harvard University and former journalist, she has contributed to publications rangingfrom Salon.com and Harvard Magazine to Yankee and TheNew York Times. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, things take an upsetting turn on Flight Through Entirety, as Bill is beset, in succession, by a nervous gunman, the master in latex (as usual), the passage of time, a creepy surgeon, and narrative inevitability. Also, the Masters are having an end-of-series party with the Cybermen again. It's World Enough and Time. Notes and links For all four of us, the special effect shot of the hole in Bill's chest is familiar from the Robert Zemeckis film Death Becomes Her (1992), in which Meryl Streep makes a similar hole in Goldie Hawn, which is for several reasons more hilarious and enjoyable. Until this point, the canonical version of the Genesis of the Cyberman had been the Big Finish audio play Spare Parts (2002), written by Marc Platt and starring Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton. It's really brilliant, and not very expensive, which means you should definitely put it on your list. And finally, the title of this story comes from Andrew Marvell's poem “To His Coy Mistress” (1681), in which the poet imagines how he would love his mistress if their time was unlimited, and then describes the alacrity with which they should love each other, given that time is fleeting. Christian McEwen -- In Praise of Listening, Slowing Down, and Creativity

Awakin Call

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2024

Traversing through time and space, and through humanness to the beyond, listening is a powerful and underrated practice. So says author, educator, and cultural activist Christian McEwen. She prefers to use the word "listening" not simply for the work of our ears, but as an extended metaphor for openness and receptivity - less actual than symbolic, less physical than metaphysical - rippling out from the self-centered human to the farthest reaches of the non-human world. In her latest work, In Praise of Listening (2023), she offers many accounts of listening as a pathway to realities forgotten and hidden, ranging from intimate anecdotes about family and friends to transformational social narratives from researchers, healers, activists, and more. The book tracks the endangered practice of listening through literature, Buddhism, nature writing, science, and sociology, including interviews with writers and therapists, naturalists, storytellers, and musicians. Christian's latest work might be seen as a cousin to her earlier, popular book, World Enough & Time: On Creativity and Slowing Down (2011), now in its second edition. "From the beginning, I was concerned with how slowness might intersect with happiness, and then again with creativity," Christian writes in World Enough. "Like the English composer Brian Eno, I wanted to find a way of living in 'a Big Here and a Long Now.' It was obvious from the start that this would not be easy." Strewn with a delicious assortment of quotes on slowing down - ranging from Lily Tomlin to Gandhi to Rumi - World Enough also gave rise to a separate book of quotes celebrating slowness, aptly titled The Tortoise Diaries. Growing up in the Scottish countryside, perhaps it was the quietude of her childhood - or its contrast with the fast-paced life in New York she witnessed as a young adult - that drew her life to dedicate her life to listening. Even in her early work as a poet, listening was key to expressing what is experienced beyond the immediately visible. Her writing draws attention to minute everyday subtleties and deeply felt personal experiences. Pausing to listen to a snail as it munches on a leaf, or to a hyacinth growing loudly in its pot, she brings together many different stories of people who've learned to listen and attune. Her work grapples with a range of topics, including gender. In 2004, she co-produced a video documentary titled Tomboys! that celebrates "tomboys of all ages" - highlighting real-life stories of feisty girls who grew up to be spirited women. At the start of the documentary, you can hear Christian's crisp, enchanting voice, "When I was a child, I was what people called a tomboy. The word itself seemed magical to me: fiery, disobedient, gloriously untidy." She's also written a play Legal Tender: Women & the Secret Life of Money (2014), based upon personal interviews with more than fifty women about their relationship with money - intended as a creative catalyst, modeling courage and honesty for its listening audience, both through the play itself and through a linked project known as "The Money Stories" workshops. Christian's thesis as a writer and producer is simple: stories give rise to other stories, and courage and clarity inspire more of the same. She has edited four anthologies, including The Alphabet of the Trees: A Guide to Nature Writing and Sparks from the Anvil: The Smith College Poetry Interviews, based on a series of interviews she conducted with visiting poets. She has written for The Nation, The Village Voice, and numerous other journals, including The Edinburgh Review of Books and the Shambhala Sun. Growing up in the Borders of Scotland "in a big old-fashioned house" with "beautiful shabby rooms and scented gardens" and "a perpetual drone of adult anxiety about school fees and taxes and the latest heating bill," Christian first came to the United States on a Fulbright Scholarship. She has taught poetry and creative writing at a number of venues, including Williams College in Massachusetts, the Zen Mountain Monastery in Upstate New York, and the Scottish Poetry Library in Edinburgh. She has also worked as a writer-in-the-schools for ALPS and the Teachers & Writers Collaborative. Christian has been a fellow, several times, both at the MacDowell Colony, and at Yaddo. In 2011, she received a grant in playwriting from the MA Cultural Council. In all her work, she continues to encourage the reader to take a moment to stop and listen. "In a world of racket and distraction, generous, expansive listening is increasingly under siege. But it remains a skill worth honoring, worth passing on...Many an old story begins with the words, 'Long ago, when animals could speak....' Perhaps the corollary would be just as good an opening.... 'Long ago, when people could listen.'" Join us for a slow conversation with this ardent listener, as we co-create a circle to reclaim this ancient medicinal practice.

In this month's episode Andy & Alex stick with the 3rd Doctor era and review another story that they know incredibly well due to its early release on VHS: Terry Nation's Death to the Daleks. As well as highlighting their favourite moments, they consider how they felt about the story back in the late Eighties compared to now. As usual they also find themselves asking a lot of questions: - Who compiles the 700 Wonders of the Universe? - Why does Julian Fox (Hamilton) have such huge eyebags? - How would you go about synthesising parrinium? - Does 10 million people really constitute a galaxy-wide plague (its only the population of Sweden!)? - and What did Michael E. Briant do immediately after recording the BBC DVD audio commentary for this story? Alex also contemplates writing a spin-off called 'Space Chums!' and worries if World Enough and Time has gone a bit South Bank Show, while Andy argues that this story is a template for Hinchcliffe Who and foxes Alex with a quiz called UNIT or UNOT. Along the way they also re-examine the relationship between the 3rd Doctor and Sarah, have a Bellal love-in, and contemplate how prescient the story is to due to its out-of-control AI city. We've been on a bit more than a summer break, but we're back and its about (World Enough and) Time... This month we go back to our roots and the very first story we covered on the podcast way back in 2017: Spearhead from Space. We archived that episode as the sound quality was terrible, but also because we didn't really do this seminal Pertwee classic justice. This time around its a proper deep dive as we talk about stuff we've not thought about before, despite knowing this story inside out: - The geography of the story: where is Oxley Woods in relation to Ashbridge Cottage Hospital and indeed AutoPlastics? And are any of those near Epping? - How automated is the Plastics Factory and why is Ransome's doll so special? - Is the 'Doctors Only' sign sexist? - Is this the worst ever exhibition at Madame Tussauds? - Does the Doctor drop calling Liz Doctor as a power move? - And our own twist on 'Gay or European?': 'Auton or sweaty?' All this, Louise Jameson, an argument about better stories than Spearhead, and a Companions quiz. What else could you possibly need? We love you (and we're very glad to be back)! Today's episode of The Literary Life is a continuation of our series covering The Mind of the Maker by Dorothy L. Sayers. Angelina, Cindy, and Thomas discuss chapters 6-8 this week, which they acknowledge are probably the most difficult portions of this book so far. Angelina starts off with some questions she has about why chapter six in included and how it fits with other arguments she has already made earlier. Thomas reads and expands on a passage about the autobiographer and his art. Angelina makes a distinction between moral goodness and artistic goodness in works of fiction and art. Cindy highlights the idea of justification and something being “out of true.” Coming up from House of Humane Letters on November 16, 2023, Jennifer Rogers' webinar on Tolkien and The Old English Tradition. Commonplace Quotes: My friend, the Scottish poet and translator Alastair Reid, carries a lifetime's worth of poems—an entire small library—in his head. “Do you memorize them?” someone asked him once. “No,” he answered gravely. “I remember them.” Christian McEwan, World Enough and Time The book everywhere exhibits the style and temper for which the author was both loved and hated. The essays are full of cheerful energy. The young people would call them ‘bonhomous'. By a bonhomous writer they mean one who seems to like writing and what he writes of, and to assume that his readers will mostly be people he would like. I think that this last assumption is what infuriates them. C. S. Lewis, Image and Imagination If you are not careful…you'll be a genius when you grow up and disgrace your parents. It was native in him to rejoice in the successes of other men at least as much as in his own triumphs. Arthur Quiller-Couch, from “The Death of Robert Louis Stevenson” Only one hour of the normal day is more pleasurable than the hour spent in bed with a book before going to sleep and that is the hour spent in bed with a book after being called in the morning. Rose Macaulay, as quoted by Christian McEwan in World Enough and Time The unity of a work of art, the basis of structural analysis, has not only been produced solely by the unconditioned will of the artist, for the artist is only its efficient cause: it has form, and consequently a formal cause. The fact that revision is possible, that the poet makes changes not because he likes them better but because they are better, means that poems, like poets, are born and not made. Northrop Frye, from Fables of Identity Nondum by Gerard Manley Hopkins " Verily Thou art a God that hidest Thyself." ISAIAH xlv. 15. God, though to Thee our psalm we raise-- No answering voice comes from the skies; To Thee the trembling sinner prays But no forgiving voice replies; Our prayer seems lost in desert ways, Our hymn in the vast silence dies. We see the glories of the earth But not the hand that wrought them all: Night to a myriad worlds gives birth, Yet like a lighted empty hall Where stands no host at door or hearth Vacant creation's lamps appall. We guess; we clothe Thee, unseen King, With attributes we deem are meet; Each in his own imagining Sets up a shadow in Thy seat; Yet know not how our gifts to bring, Where seek Thee with unsandalled feet. Hundreds of people can talk for one who can think, but thousands of people can think for one who can see. To see clearly is poetry, prophecy and religion—all in one.” from The World Enough and Time, by Christian McEwan Build, build your Babels black against the sky- But mark yon small green blade, your stones between, The single spy Of that uncounted host you have outcast; For with their tiny pennons waving green They shall storm your streets at last. F. L. Lucas, from “Beleaguered Cities” The old universe was wholly different in its effect. It was an answer, not a question. It offered not a field for musing but a single overwhelming object; an object which at once abashes and exalts the mind. For in it there is a final standard of size. The Primum Mobile is really large because it is the largest corporeal thing there is. We are really small because our whole Earth is a speck compared with the Primum Mobile. C. S. Lewis, from Studies in Medieval and Renaissance Literature Science-Fiction Cradlesong by C. S. Lewis By and by Man will try To get out into the sky, Sailing far beyond the air From Down and Here to Up and There. Stars and sky, sky and stars Make us feel the prison bars. Suppose it done. Now we ride Closed in steel, up there, outside Through our port-holes see the vast Heaven-scape go rushing past. Shall we? All that meets the eye Is sky and stars, stars and sky. Points of light with black between Hang like a painted scene Motionless, no nearer there Than on Earth, everywhere Equidistant from our ship. Heaven has given us the slip. Hush, be still. Outer space Is a concept, not a place. Try no more. Where we are Never can be sky or star. From prison, in a prison, we fly; There's no way into the sky. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

A wise man once said, “You can do loads in twelve minutes. Suck a mint, buy a sledge, have a fast bath.” Tonight, Brendan, Nathan, James and canonical friend-of-the-podcast Conrad Westmaas find out just what Paul McGann can do in just seven minutes and nine seconds. Turns out, quite a lot. It's The Night of the Doctor. Watch the story! The Night of the Doctor was originally released on BBC iPlayer on 14 November 2013. It is included as a special feature on the DVD and Blu-ray releases of The Day of the Doctor, which means you probably have it on a shelf somewhere. Failing that, it is also available on YouTube. Notes and links The second, completely unmemorable prequel to The Day of the Doctor is called The Last Day, and can also be found on YouTube. It's included here merely for the sake of completeness: you don't have to go and watch it or anything. There will be a lot of talk this week about Steven Moffat's novelisation of The Day of the Doctor (2018), so let's start by admitting that Nathan gives the wrong chronological order here. From our point of view, it goes Tennant, Smith, Hurt, but from the Doctor's point of view it goes Hurt, Tennant, Smith. Which is just the sort of nonsense that you either love/hate about Moffat. For Conrad — and for the rest of us too, really — this episode is the sequel to The Brain of Morbius, which we discussed way back in Episode 41: Philip Madoc in Fishnets. For fans of a certain age, Paul McGann will always be I in Withnail & I (1987), alongside titular Doctor Who villain Richard E Grant. Every weekend was very much like that film in the late 80s and early 90s, apparently. River Song snogs Colin Baker's Doctor (spoilers!) in a Big Finish story called World Enough and Time, part of The Diary of River Song, Series 2. Brendan says that it's proper romantic. And finally, Conrad sent us this photo of Ohila's costume alongside the Eighth Doctor's costume for this episode. The hat that forms part of Ohila's costume is just the sort of magnificent nonsense an accomplished actress might refuse to wear on set. Follow us Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, Brendan is @brandybongos, James is @ohjamessellwood and Conrad is @HairoftheHound_. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow the podcast on Twitter at @FTEpodcast. We're also on Facebook, and you can check out our website at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll subject you to a proper legitimate actor tantrum when you tell us we have to wear that gorgeous hat that you spent so much time creating. And more You can find Jodie into Terror, our flashcast on the Whittaker Era of Doctor Who, at jodieintoterror.com, at @JodieIntoTerror on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and wherever podcasts can be found. We'll be back with a new flashcast on the second Russell T Davies era in November 2023. Our James Bond commentary podcast is called Bondfinger, and you can find that at bondfinger.com, at @bondfingercast on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and everywhere else as well. In our most recent episode, we watched in awe as Roger Moore and Tony Curtis solved the mystery of The Long Goodbye. We can also be heard on the Blakes 7 podcast Maximum Power, which a few weeks ago started its coverage of Series B of the show. This week's episode: Chris Boucher's Weapon, starring The Talons of Weng-Chiang's John Bennett in a largely non-racist role. And finally, there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. We've been having a short break to give us the chance to rest on our laurels after our first year of podcasting. Today, we're recommending our coverage of Star Trek: Discovery.

Doctor Who: the World Enough and Time podcast

It's our 50th episode! To celebrate our golden jubilee we have a quick look back through our podcast archives to dig out some of our favourite and silly moments from the past 4 years. Surprise guests include: @hannahbeeblogs, Kieran Hodgson off Two Doors Down, and the Cailleach! Elsewhere, Nightmare of Eden and Invasion of the Dinosaurs are in the Time-Space Visualiser and the quiz focuses on the life and times of Nicholas Courtney in 'Courtney or Court-nay'. We also review the missing Hartnell historical Marco Polo. Alex has unwisely watched it all in one sitting, while Andy relied on a gatefold LP and Lou & Lalla acting out the entire story in a specially constructed pergola in his back garden while swigging back elderflower presse in straw hats. Several fascinating matters are also discussed in relation to early Who. While Alex suggests that John Lucarotti might actually have nicked Marco Polo due to his preference for radio, Andy recounts what may be the most important Doctor Who memo of all time, written by the director of episode 4 (The Wall of Lies) John Crockett. Andy also reminisces about the time he was almost found in contempt of court and Alex obsesses about horses and distances again. Yes it's exactly what you might expect from an episode of World Enough and Time, only a bit longer than usual - some might say bumper - and a bit more gilt-edged. See the finish! Enjoy! We love you. Andy & Alex xxx Next Time: Inferno (gosh!) Photo colourised and restored by Clayton Hickman.

It's an illustrated Discworld crossover special as Georgina Chadderton rejoins Liz and Ben to talk gods, dragons and outer space in the twenty-seventh Discworld novel, 2001's The Last Hero, illustrated by Paul Kidby. Genghiz Cohen, Emperor of the Agatean Empire, has deserted his throne, and along with his horde is heading for the mountain at the hub of the world. He is planning to pay a little visit on the gods, and "return what the first hero stole" - with explosive interest. According to the wizards, this will destroy the source of the Disc's magic and thus end all life on (and under) it. A rag-tag team of misfits is quickly assembled - a dangerously genius inventor, a stout and honest officer of the Watch, and a reluctant "wizzard" - to take a risky flight looping around the Disc, and intercept Cohen before its too late... The second large-format illustrated Discworld novel, The Last Hero - subtitled "A Discworld Fable" - is a relatively short story, but crosses the streams of the various sub-series more than any other book, providing Paul Kidby with the chance to showcase a whole host of characters and places - including the Disc as seen from above and below! It both feels like a throwback to some of the earlier books - the whole world at stake, Rincewind and Cohen on wild Disc-crossing adventures, the gods playing games with mortals - and a fitting last hurrah (more or less) for two of Pratchett's most beloved characters. Is this a fitting send-off for Cohen? What's happening in the Agatean Empire now its Emperor is gone? How many hours have you spent poring over the illustrations finding references, in-jokes and Easter eggs? And what do you imagine the minstrel's saga sounds like? Join the conversation using the hashtag #Pratchat55 on social media. Guest Georgina Chadderton (aka George Rex) is a comic book creator and illustrator based in Adelaide. She was last our guest way back in #Pratchat7 in 2018 to talk about the first illustrated Discworld novel, Eric. Since then she's continued to make delightful autobiographical comic (including her upcoming book), run comic-making workshops, organise the Papercuts Comics Festival, and even found the time to create the cover art for Pratchat! You can find her online at georgerexcomics.com, where you can find out about Georgina's upcoming events and also buy all manner of cool comics, postcards and stickers. You can also follow her on Instagram at @georgerexcomics. As usual, you can find notes and errata for this episode on our website. Over the next two months we're returning to Pratchett's sci-fi work. In June, we're discussing his 1990 short story "#IFDEFDEBUG + 'WORLD/ENOUGH' + 'TIME'" with science fiction author Sean Williams. That'll leave us (and you) a bit of extra reading time before July for the third Long Earth novel, The Long Mars, which we'll be discussing with our old friend Joel Martin! But in the meantime, you can send us your questions for the short story using the hashtag #Pratchat56, or via email to chat@pratchatpodcast.com.

Two fine examples of body horror, Ben and Mark discuss Cyber origins by way of 'World Enough and Time'/'The Doctor Falls' and the Big Finish audio 'Spare Parts'. As well as discussing the inevitability of the Cybermen, they also discuss the relatable aspects of the Master's self-destructive downfall. With 'Spare Parts', they ponder how much Big Finish has changed since the show returned in 2005 and how you avoid the pitfalls of "just doing Genesis of the Daleks again". Also: Has Steven Moffat actually written the last ever episode of Doctor Who? What does the Doctor's failure say about the political climate of 2017? And what's it like to cook a lasagne in the company of four different versions of Nick Briggs?

Time travelling archaeologist and adventurer River Song returns - and this time she will be stepping into the past life of the Doctor, encountering two of his incarnations at once! From the space exploration vessel Saturnius – which is heading to a destination that never gets any closer - to a doomed planet Earth and beyond, River's journey will bring her closer to a new foe… and an encounter with both the Sixth and Seventh Doctors. 2.1 The Unknown by Guy Adams A planetary anomaly. A scientific impossibility. A mystery to be solved. Of course, River Song expects to be consulted. She expects her valuable knowledge and experience will help the crew of the Saturnius unlock the strange phenomenon that has appeared in Earth's solar system.
