This book analyses the way that changes in the comics industry, book trade and webcomics distribution have shaped the publication of long-form comics. The US Graphic Novel (Edinburgh UP, 2022) pays particular attention to how the concept of the graphic novel developed through the twentieth century. Art historians, journalists, and reviewers debated whether it was possible for a comic to be a novel – debates that accelerated after the term 'graphic novel' was coined by the comics fan Richard Kyle in 1964. This study underlines the proximity of the graphic novel to other media, showing that this cultural form is not only the meeting place between periodical comics and books, but that graphic novels are in dialogue with films, posters and computer screens. Dr. Paul Williams is an Associate Professor of Twentieth-Century literature and culture at the University of Exeter in the UK. His research is centrally concerned with comics and graphic novels. His monograph Dreaming the Graphic Novel broke new ground by explaining how graphic novels were published, circulated, and discussed in North America between the mid-1960s and 1980. Dr. Williams has also co-curated the exhibition The Great British Graphic Novel at the Cartoon Museum in London, which was visited by over 10,000 people. Learn more about your ad choices. Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

My guest this week is Becky Jefcoate, who like me was at university in Lampeter from 1991-94 where she studied Archaeology and English Literature. We find out how Becky ended up there and why her school teacher had misgivings about doing Archaeology as a single honours subject. We talk about how Lampeter was a place you knew pretty quickly whether you were going to fit in or not and how it attracted a certain type of self-sufficient person. After university, Becky moved to London and we learn about her time working at the Cartoon Museum as well as in a theatre and at the Royal Opera House. We talk about the collections in the Cartoon Museum, exploring with different audiences what the relevance was to them personally of the likes of Hogarth and Bagpuss. There was a specific Nostalgia exhibition, and we learn how it affected Becky, and the therapeutic possibilities involved when recording people's memories. Becky has always kept a diary including from her Lampeter days, and we talk about the efficacy of diaries. We learn about Becky's childhood. She was born in Birkenhead and moved to Lincolnshire, and remembers watching Robin of Sherwood and its mystical world England. Her favourite film was Raiders of the Lost Ark and which was a determining factor in studying Archaeology. Musically, Becky was into the Pet Shop Boys and Crowded House. Becky was one of the DJs in the Union Disco in Lampeter, and we talk about the interplay between new and old music played by bands at gigs. We discuss the balance of Archaeology and English as they are about people and their stories, what they have left behind, and we find out how they have both helped Becky in terms of her career. Becky wrote over 500 letters to every arts organization and museum when applying for work, and she reflects on whether with the passing of time we tend to remember the good times, and what we learn from the past. Then, at the end of the interview, we find out about the performances Becky was involved with in the Drama Society, about the way we look back on particular years, and why Becky is an especially nostalgic person.

With Mat providing an authorised absence to attend the book signing at Forbidden Planet, Bedwyr and Susan are left to reminisce about the Target books of old. Four modern stories, plus ‘City of Death’, have been novelised. These are episodes that can be watched again and again. Yet, even in this modern world, there is a place for novelisations of these stories. Of course, Bedwyr and Susan remember a time when the Target books were the only way to revisit old stories. Together the duo share memories of specific titles and tell stories of story books. Another element of the successful range was the artwork that adorned the covers. Despite a move to photo covers in the 1980’s, the artwork creations remain the best, showcased in a recent exhibition at the Cartoon Museum in London. It was there that Susan interviewed Chris Achilleos a link to which is below. Enjoy this trip into classic Doctor Who literature and be sure to send us photos of your collections. For more details on the Target book she of the past check out David Howe’s book on the subject available from Telos Publishing.
