The animation is back and somehow we're really happy about that! There is a brilliant action sequence that we can't see but the emergence of the Cybermen and Vaughn's plans are coming to fruition...no signs of this story running out of steam.

This time we watched Tomorrow, the Rat — Episode 4 from Series 1 of Doomwatch, first broadcast 2 March 1970 and written by Terence Dudley. That's four years before James Herbert published The Rats (which we covered in episode 4). It's highly likely he was inspired by this vintage BBC sci-fi thriller—pen in hand, watching Doomwatch unfold.Doomwatch was a vintage BBC science fiction series that aired from 1970 to 1972. A prime example of British sci-fi, it followed a government scientific agency led by Dr Spencer Quist (John Paul) investigating futuristic environmental and technological threats. Think of it as classic BBC sci-fi with serious Black Mirror energy. The show was created by Doctor Who masterminds Gerry Davis and Kit Pedler—the very same duo who invented the Cybermen. Davis had been a Doctor Who story editor; Pedler served as scientific adviser. Their fascination with the dangers of science run amok became the foundation of Doomwatch, this cult BBC science fiction drama.Series 1 and 2 each had thirteen episodes; Series 3 had twelve (though one, Sex and Violence, was never broadcast). The BBC got cold feet, possibly due to real execution footage and unflattering portrayals of public figures like Mary Whitehouse and Cliff Richard. As with far too much vintage BBC content, parts of Doomwatch are missing—wiped or taped over. At its peak, the show pulled in over 13 million viewers, cementing its place in classic British sci-fi history.Dr Quist was a Nobel-winning physicist haunted by his involvement in the Manhattan Project. (Yes, he appears in Oppenheimer.) John Paul, who played him, was a familiar face on British television: I, Claudius, Triangle, The Avengers, The New Avengers—proper BBC veteran.Toby Wren, played by Robert Powell (who we talked about in episode 46, The Survivor), was a key figure in Series 1. He met a legendary end in the finale, Survival Code. Powell asked to go out with a bang—literally. The BBC received more letters about his on-screen death than any issue since World War II.This episode, Tomorrow, the Rat, was written by Terence Dudley—then the producer of Doomwatch. Dudley directed three episodes and went on to work extensively in Doctor Who, including directing Meglos (1980), and writing Four to Doomsday, Black Orchid, and The King's Demons. He also wrote Target novelisations and K-9 and Company. Classic vintage BBC sci-fi pedigree.Simon Oates plays Dr John Ridge—you may remember him from Beasts (The Dummy episode, which we reviewed in 44a). He also played Steed in the stage version of The Avengers.Penelope Lee appears as Dr Mary Bryant. She once auditioned to play Barbara, the Doctor's original companion. She later voiced Lyn Driver in The Plague Dogs (a British animation not for the faint-hearted) and a computer in Doctor Who: Revelation of the Daleks. She also featured in Richard Donner's Superman as the Ninth Elder. Peak British sci-fi credentials.Hamilton Dyce turns up as the Minister. You might recognise him as Major General Scobie in Doctor Who: Spearhead from Space—another vintage BBC sci-fi staple. And no, before you ask, none of this cast ever turned up in Boon.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. Originally released on the 27th of May 2015!!! (The original episode contained) In episode 20 of the podcast we catch up with what each other has been watching and/or listening to since last we recorded. Liam tells of his experiences in America. Next we look at the connections between some of the lost classic Doctor Who serials and a landfill in a New Mexico desert (audio segements came from ATARI: Game Over, a documentary made in 2014). I reference some facts that The Tin-Dog Podcast's host Michael, has made in some of his past podcasts (I don't know which one, but I'm sure they exist). Once we hit the news, Liam shares his frustration with Disney and their lack of consideration towards Star Wars fans for what they'll be doing with the continuity established in the book series once episode VII comes out in December. We discuss the news and future releases from Big Finish regarding Torchwood, Doom Coalistion, The Worlds of Big Finish (extreme crossover release) and it's potiential marketing sceme. When we get to the reviews we first finish discussing The Two Doctors classic story, focusing on audio only, but my explaining of what happened visually to add clarification to the story. Next we discuss the Big Finish releases: The Defectors - by Nick Briggs; Last of the Cybermen - by Alan Barnes; Death Match - by Matt Fitton; Suburban Hell - by Alan Barnes; The Well-Mannered War - by Gareth Roberts, adapted by John Dorney; Damaged Goods - by Russell T. Davies, adapted by Jonathan Morris. During the review of Damaged Goods we get into the a second discussion/debate on Doctor Who "Cannon" or what is and what is not cannon, and then back to Star Wars cannon and not cannon. I make a reference to @DoctorSquee's Gallifrey Stands Podcast interview with Paul Cornell. We finish up the show reviewing Jago & Litefoot sereis 9, Blake's 7 Truth and Lies, and Terrahawks Vol. 1, before a quick Game of Thrones discussion to end episode 20. Stay tuned for more Doctor Who goodness, including monthly Big Finish reviews, audio commentary, retro-reviews, the DWAP "Rassilon Seal of Approval" and beyond!
Ian and Nathan are thawed out to review probably the most iconic 2nd Doctor story! The Tomb of the Cybermen (1967). Directed by Morris Barry. Written by Kit Pedler and Gerry Davies. Starring Patrick Troughton, Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling
We re-watch the Series 2 penultimate and ultimate episodes. Starting with “Army of Ghosts” where the Doctor and Rose arrive back in London to do some laundry. Oh yeah! And visit with Jackie... and said ‘ghosts'... but mostly do laundry. Followed by “Doomsday” where the Who crew save the day but the Doctor loses his bestie. Whilst all this is going down, pre-Martha gets upgraded, Jackie and Pete get reunited but it feels so ewww, and Rose lives but dies inside because she will never ever get to see the Doctor ever again. Pinkie swear that will never ever happen. Ever. EVER!
Now firmly settled into his new form, The Doctor is suddenly faced with the fallout of the actions of his previous incarnations. This week, Paddy and Tricia follow The Doctor and Peri as they track a distress signal to Earth, which brings them back to where The Doctor's adventures started. Will they be able to find the source of the signal and survive the Attack of the Cybermen?
AN ESSAY by a tech writer and CEO makes the case that the tech/AI singularity isn't coming, it's already here. Mark Jeftovic argues that we have created code that's now writing its own code to create more intelligent artificial intelligence—a feedback loop that is accelerating. Jeftovic then cites an X account that claims Elon Musk's Grok 3 achieved AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) on February 17, 2025—and further, several different AIs across different companies achieved consciousness simultaneously and are converging with each other. It may sound like science fiction, but it's plausible, which is why we open our new book The Gates of Hell with a fictional scenario describing the emergence of a self-aware AI called KRONOS (name chosen deliberately—see Derek's previous book The Second Coming of Saturn). It's a story we've seen often in science fiction, from the Cybermen of Doctor Who and the Borg of Star Trek to ARIIA of Eagle Eye and SkyNet of the Terminator franchise. And yet, to use Elon Musk's words, we continue to summon the demon. We also discuss last night's tornadoes here in Missouri and the supernatural stories that came out of the deadly Joplin tornado of May 22, 2011. Multiple witnesses reported physically impossible encounters with beings children called “butterfly people.” These accounts are documented in the book And the Angels Came and the 2024 documentary The Butterfly People (stream it for $5 here). Our new book The Gates of Hell is now available in paperback, Kindle, and as an audiobook at Audible! Adric's fate, an unexpected "asteroid," and the triumphant return of the Cybermen—Earthshock is the definitive Doctor Who game-changer. From its big-budget action sequences to its brutal emotional gut punches, this Davison classic gave us one of the show's most shocking cliffhangers and its most heart-wrenching companion exit. But does all the spectacle hold up, or is this the original sin of '80s Who? Join us as we crack the last logic code, psychoanalyze the Cyber Leader's emotions (should Cybermen even have emotions?), and get lost in the cavernous plot holes of one of the show's most unforgettable adventures. Today's book club adventure takes us into the era of Sylvester McCoy. We take a look at the BBC's first Seventh Doctor story in the Past Doctor Adventures range, where he and Ace encounter the Cybermen and Nazis. But in World War 2. Not in Windsor. We're joined by co-author Mike Tucker and Steve Cole - at the same time! - to discuss this novel.
Continuing our rewatch of Series 2 brings us the long awaited two-part return of... Pete Tyler! Also I guess the Cybermen... whatever Boomer (scoffs)... Whilst “Rise of the Cybermen” lands us in an alt-universe London where their Rose is a dog, Mickey is gay, and our Doctor reunites with his Potterverse father. “The Age of Steel” kills off alt-Jackie, Rickey (alt-Mickey), and the rising alt-Cybermen. You just know this Doctor is not unhappy about some of these developments.

I'm not trying to win. I'm not doing this because I want to beat someone, or because I hate someone, or because I want to blame someone. It's not because it's fun and God knows it's not because it's easy. It's not even because it works, because it hardly ever does. I do what I do because it's right! Because it's decent! And above all, it's kind. It's just that. Just kind. On a quiet farm on a distant spaceship, the Doctor makes his last stand. Because that's what he always does. It's The Doctor Falls. Notes and links Nathan compares the Missy/Master dynamic to a similar situation found in the late Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Second Chances, in which we meet a transporter clone of Commander Riker who is still in love with Deanna Troi, while his original version has long since moved on from that relationship. (We are yet to cover this one on Untitled Star Trek Project.) He also compares the Missy/Master hug to a similar one from the Blakes 7 episode Traitor, in which Servalan snogs a character called Leitz, who is blackmailing her, and then stabs him in the back of the neck with a plastic crystal thing. We will talk more about this during our coverage of Blakes 7 Series D on Maximum Power, which starts just three weeks from today. In The World Shapers (1987), a Doctor Who Magazine comic strip written by Grant Morrison, it is established that the Mondasian Cybermen were descended from the Voord from The Keys of Marinus. Bill's final speech to the unconscious Doctor at the end of this episode seems to allude to a similar speech from Moffat's first Doctor Who story, The Curse of Fatal Death (1999), in which the Doctor's companion Emma (Julia Sawalha) says “Doctor, listen to me. You can't die, you're too nice, too brave, too kind and far, far too silly. You're like Father Christmas, the Wizard of Oz, Scooby Doo. And I love you very much. And we all need you, and you simply cannot die.” You can — and should — watch The Curse of Fatal Death on YouTube. Picks of the Week Todd Todd recommends the Special Edition of The Happiness Patrol, which restores many deleted scenes and adds some clever and sympathetically designed new special effects. It's available on the Season 25 box set of Doctor Who: The Collection. (Amazon UK) (Amazon US) (Amazon AU) Peter Peter recommends the Surgeons of Horror podcast series on Doctor Who, The Horror of Who, which has featured Brendan, Peter and Nathan. In the episode Hartnell's Horror Part 4: The Cybermen, Peter explains what makes the Cybermen from The Tenth Planet so brilliant and effective. Brendan Brendan recommends George Sheard's reimagining of these two episodes as a 1960s Doctor Who story as Genesis of the Cybermen: World Enough and Time Noir. Check out the trailer here. Nathan Nathan recommends our other Doctor Who podcast, 500 Year Diary, which will be taking over from Flight Through Entirety for a few years while FTE takes a well-earned break. In our first season, New Beginnings, we discussed six episodes in Doctor Who and its spinoffs, where a show is making a new or fresh start. We'll be back with a second season early in 2025. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. 500 Year Diary is our latest new Doctor Who podcast, going back through the history of the show and examining new themes and ideas. Its first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we enjoyed a widely-reviled episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine called Ferengi Love Songs.

This week, things take an upsetting turn on Flight Through Entirety, as Bill is beset, in succession, by a nervous gunman, the master in latex (as usual), the passage of time, a creepy surgeon, and narrative inevitability. Also, the Masters are having an end-of-series party with the Cybermen again. It's World Enough and Time. Notes and links For all four of us, the special effect shot of the hole in Bill's chest is familiar from the Robert Zemeckis film Death Becomes Her (1992), in which Meryl Streep makes a similar hole in Goldie Hawn, which is for several reasons more hilarious and enjoyable. Until this point, the canonical version of the Genesis of the Cyberman had been the Big Finish audio play Spare Parts (2002), written by Marc Platt and starring Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton. It's really brilliant, and not very expensive, which means you should definitely put it on your list. And finally, the title of this story comes from Andrew Marvell's poem “To His Coy Mistress” (1681), in which the poet imagines how he would love his mistress if their time was unlimited, and then describes the alacrity with which they should love each other, given that time is fleeting. Follow us Nathan is on Bluesky at @nathanbottomley.com and Todd is at @toddbeilby.bsky.social; Simon is on X as @simonmoore72. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. This week, we enjoyed a dumb and action-packed episode of Star Trek: Enterprise called Azati Prime.
We continue on with our leisurely-paced examination of Ian Marter's time on Doctor Who by looking at Harry Sullivan's role in Genesis of the Daleks and Revenge of the Cybermen. The character starts out strong with Terry Nation's sidekick / buddy writing for Sullivan in Genesis, but by the time Bob Holmes writes Revenge, Harry is on the chopping block, and we witness a prickly, almost hostile relationship with Sarah and the scapegoat and butt of jokes for the Doctor — a total disintegration of the character due to no fault of Marter. Opening music is from the Genesis of the Daleks soundtrack composed by Dudley Simpson and closing music is "Rockfall" composed by Carey Blyton. We recorded this episode on 4 November 2024.

Tread Perilously begins a cornucopia of sci-fi with the most infamous episode of Torchwood: "Cyberwoman." When Ianto Jones invites a specialist in Cyber tech to Torchwood 3, all hell breaks loose. It turns out he's been keeping his partially Cyber-ized girlfriend on life support since the Battle of Canary Wharf. He's using a Cyber-conversion machine to do it. And none of the others know about it. Of course, Cybermen are going to Cyberman, but will a "Cyberwoman" also seek to make all organic life like her? Also: what will Captain Jack Harkness do when he learns Ianto has been keeping a woman prisoner in their basement? Justin faces his first -- and possibly last -- episode of Torchwood. He learns almost immediately why Erik has been putting this one off for so long. Episode writer Chris Chibnall is, once again, in the hot seat. Erik is accused of being a David Tennant fan. The weeds lead to some darker places, but also to discussion of The Tick, the Noldor, and more. Justin tries to make sense of Torchwood as a concept. He also notes Erik's "angry" British accent. A surprise Burn Gorman appears! White Water Summer is used to prove a point. The viscosity of Ianto becomes important and Justin suggests Torchwood isn't sexy enough.

This week, Brendan, Nathan, Steven B and Johnny Spandrell penetrate the heart of the Vatican, only to discover that behind its dusty and arcane lore lies an eldritch horror that threatens the very idea of existence itself. It's Extremis. Notes and links The most important inspiration here is Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code (2003), a massively popular and widely-panned thriller about a dark secret that threatens the credibility of the Catholic Church itself (but probably not the one you're thinking of). Perhaps this review of the book will give you a good sense of its style. It turns out that the dark secret in The Da Vinci code was originally revealed in 1982 in a best-selling book called The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail (or in the US, more pithily, Holy Blood, Holy Grail). This book was, terrifyingly but unsurprisingly, co-written by our very own Henry Lincoln, co-writer of The Abominable Snowmen, The Web of Fear and The Dominators. Steven remembers the first Doctor talking about his religious beliefs in a passage from The Empire of Glass (1995) by Andy Lane. Here, in Chapter 6, the Doctor is talking to Galileo. “In short, sir, I am currently an agnostic, and by the time my life draws to its close, and I have travelled from one side of the universe to the other and seen every sight there is to see, I firmly expect to be an atheist. Does that answer your question?” In a recent episode of The Bjay BJ Game Show, Brendan and Bjay review a game called The Talos Principle, a video game set in a computer simulation which deals with questions of identity and religion. Nathan has a website called the Randomiser at therandomiser.net, which can help you pick a random Doctor Who story to watch, but which can also (more importantly, perhaps) reassure you that you're not living in a computer simulation. The properly randomised Doctor Who podcast which Nathan appeared on is called Pull to Open, with Pete Pachal and Chris Taylor. As a kind of public service, Steven alerts us to a 2015 article by Charlie Brooker about a group of German researchers created a version of Super Mario World in which Mario was self-aware and emotionally affected by his experiences in the game. Steven also draws our attention to a branch of philosophy concerned with the possibility that we might all be living in a computer simulation. This 2020 article in Scientific American sums up the state of play. Johnny refers to Kit Pedler's original conception of the Cybermen as a race of Star Monks — an idea that El Sandifer runs with in a productive and interesting way in her essay on The Tenth Planet. Johnny Spandrell takes aim at this story in an entertaining and insightful blog post on Extremis, written in 2018. Here's a link to the Character Options Series 10 action figure set, featuring the Doctor, Bill and a heavily made up Missy, for those of you who enjoy that kind of thing. And finally, here's Donna Summer singing about this story forty years early in Once Upon a Time….
