We have finally made our way through the entirety of Season 19, the first run of Peter Davison as the Doctor. You all know what that means!!! It's time for our customary season retrospective, in which we look back at the entire season, using a blend of awards, metrics, and questions from our friends on social media to make our thoughts known… And man, do we make our thoughts known this time around. As always, this was a lot of fun for us to do so we hope that you enjoy listening to this as much as we did making it. Join us as we discuss whether or not Reilly owes our listeners drink when they purposefully try to gross out Diana by using her “favourite” Doctor Who phrase (don't worry, we won't spell it out here), who actually votes for Adric's death as being the best moment of the season, who should sport a carrot on their lapel (Troughton or Baker), and how we all want a TARDIS crew who just LIKE each other. And of course, please let us know if pairing up the Dickie (awarded to Bidmead) with the Cumming just made sense this season, or no. If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the entirety of the season available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). This episode, we finally get ourselves started on the Fifth Doctor era as the Master returns (again) to taunt our new Doctor in Castrovalva… heh heh heh… Join us as we discuss just how young Peter Davison was when this was made, whether or not Adric was a little TOO excited at being tied up in the Master's web (or if it's just the harness), Tegan's need for “enormous thrust,” Bidmead's myriad weaknesses, and how the Master THINKS that he's a dom, but is clearly just a brat and all he wants is kisses (because he DESERVES them!)… this might be our most unhinged episode yet, to be honest. Space Precinct actor and Gerry Anderson Podcast host Richard James chooses this Peter Davison story to put under the positive magnifying glass that is Happy Times and Places. Perhaps the most traditional seeming story of the Fifth Doctor's first year, The Visitation seems to have fallen out of favour in recent years. So is it a case of a plague on all four episodes or are the story's good qualities so infectiously good that by the end of it you'll be riddled with positives? #doctorwho #doctorwhoreaction #doctorwhocommentary #doctorwhocomedian #tobyhadoke #doctorwhofacts #positivedoctorwho #classicdoctorwho Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. There's bad Doctor Who that makes you ROFL. There's bad Doctor Who that just leaves you baffled. And sometimes, if you're lucky, you find both in one story. Four to Doomsday, Peter Davison's first dip in the Who pool, was a tale of two reactions for Team PTO. Good thing the political angles (incel Adric, anyone?) were so outnumbered by hilarious/dumb/hallucinatory choices (Tegan can draw like DaVinci and pilot a TARDIS by crying now?) Join us as we hurl a cricket ball of nerd rage right at the fabulous green-suited alien of early '80s camp. Howzat?! Give your own rating for Four to Doomsday on Spotify! OLIVER CROCKER on the original ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on December 15th 2024. This week's special guest is the film-maker, researcher, prolific podcaster, and author, OLIVER CROCKER who joins me to talk not about the long-running police drama THE BILL, about which he is something of an authority, but about another long-running drama from the 1970s and 1980s, the popular Yorkshire-set veterinary series ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL based upon the books by the author ALF WRIGHT who was better known by the pen name JAMES HERRIOT. Starring CHRISTOPHER TIMOTHY, ROBERT HARDY, CAROL DRINKWATER, and PETER DAVISON, with the likes of JOHN McGLYNN and LINDA BELLINGHAM joining the cast for its revival, ALL CREATURES was a huge success across seven series, ninety episodes, and appeared in the BBC schedules for over a decade, making household names of all of its stars, with a popular combination of light comedy, heart-wrenching drama, and lots and lots of the kind of photogenic cute furry animals that had viewers tuning in in their millions. OLIVER quite literally wrote the book on ALL CREATURES with his popular ALL MEMORIES GREAT AND SMALL, a collection of memories and production details about the making of a series which was so well loved that it has been successfully revived by CHANNEL FIVE for five series and counting, so I am very pleased to welcome him to VISION ON SOUND this week, to talk about this, and his TV career in general. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

This week, things take an upsetting turn on Flight Through Entirety, as Bill is beset, in succession, by a nervous gunman, the master in latex (as usual), the passage of time, a creepy surgeon, and narrative inevitability. Also, the Masters are having an end-of-series party with the Cybermen again. It's World Enough and Time. Notes and links For all four of us, the special effect shot of the hole in Bill's chest is familiar from the Robert Zemeckis film Death Becomes Her (1992), in which Meryl Streep makes a similar hole in Goldie Hawn, which is for several reasons more hilarious and enjoyable. Until this point, the canonical version of the Genesis of the Cyberman had been the Big Finish audio play Spare Parts (2002), written by Marc Platt and starring Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton. It's really brilliant, and not very expensive, which means you should definitely put it on your list. And finally, the title of this story comes from Andrew Marvell's poem “To His Coy Mistress” (1681), in which the poet imagines how he would love his mistress if their time was unlimited, and then describes the alacrity with which they should love each other, given that time is fleeting. Follow us Nathan is on Bluesky at @nathanbottomley.com and Todd is at @toddbeilby.bsky.social; Simon is on X as @simonmoore72. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. 500 Year Diary is our latest new Doctor Who podcast, going back through the history of the show and examining new themes and ideas. Its first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we enjoyed a dumb and action-packed episode of Star Trek: Enterprise called Azati Prime.
New episode out now! We watched the pilot episode of the British mystery show The Last Detective, starring Peter Davison as DC “Dangerous” Davies. We talk about the main character and how his whole vibe seemed to be just “normal” and “nice”, and how he utilizes that vibe to get people to really talk to him. We have a discussion about the evolution of British vs American humor and debate whether this show can be labeled a comedy in any way or more a “dramatic cop show with small comedy elements”. We enjoy how it explored the real trauma a family goes through when the worst happens, and appreciated how it portrayed the messiness, randomness, and complexity implicit in human nature. Katy forgot about the Roman Empire, Carrie shares a fun fact about Mormans, Maddy was actually compelled, and Mack worries about remembering where he was at all times. We also talk about council estates (again), learn some Doctor Who family connections, wonder if you can eat fruit from a green burial, and get jealous at European transit. Listen to hear more about Madonna music rights, JSTOR, tithing, Carrie laughs, and gender swapping RPG campaigns. Enjoy! TW: Chris Hardwick, generational trauma, sexual assault, cancer
