It's our hundredth episode and in celebration we have been briefly removed from our own time-streams to go old school and dawdle ineffectually around Survival from the olden days of 1989.   On at least one occasion John says Rhona Cameron instead of Rona Munro, and he could not be more mortified. Sorry.   Please read all of John Wyndham's work with the possible exception of the posthumously published Plan For Chaos.   Peter Strickland's four films Katalin Varga, Berberian Sound Studio, The Duke Of Burgundy and In Fabric are all exquisite, but they aren't for everyone.   Restraint Of Beasts by Magnus Mills is a morbidly brilliant book. Highly recommended.     This is the US Doctors thing we were nattering on about. There's nothing wrong with Perivale. Ben theorizes that Rona Munro is channeling the myth of Herne the Hunter as inspiration for the Cheetah people revealing the magic that is hidden in suburban London. Not so much the Cockney urchin that Ace likes to pretend she is, the trip back to Perivale reveals that she perhaps is a spoiled middle class kid whose making a big deal about not much of anything. David notes this story feels much more London than anything London in the modern Who era. Proving that setting is more than just a few set dressings of buses and phone boxes. All-in-all, Survival is a praiseworthy Doctor Who story and sadly the last of the classic era. Opening music is from the score of Survival by Dominic Glynn. Glynn also composed the closing music, "...and Somewhere Else, The Tea's Getting Cold." At the very end, to help celebrate the old western feel to Glynn's score, we ultimately close with the Cellar Set's 2007 interpretation of the theme in "Spaghetti Who."

Ben and Mark discuss Doctor Who's relationship with realism as they watch "Night Terrors" and "Survival". Is Night Terrors' main issue a lack of grounding in a particular time or place? Is Survival the perfect end for Doctor Who? Along the way, Mark goes a bit Noel Edmonds and ponders Doctor Who's cosmic coincidences, Ben discovers the inherent sadness of the humble dog on a chain and there's some discussion of the endings to Seinfeld, Star Trek and Will & Grace. Bedwyr and Susan are back with their brand of Doctor Who related conversation. Firstly the duo reflect on the return of Rona Munro. With 'The Eaters of Light' Munro became the first Doctor Who writer to author a tale for both the classic and new incarnations of the show. Naturally our two hosts who belong to that Classic era take the opportunity to reflect on 'Survival', Monro's first story, before turning their attention to 'The Eaters of Light'. Doctor Who: Straight Outta Gallifrey

The final episode of series 26 broached many interesting ideas by Rona Munro, who later returns to Doctor Who in 2017's story, the Eaters of Light.  Both stories play around with ideas about bravery, divides among cultures, traditions, languages, species, etc.  Ace returns to her hometown, and it is not a hero's welcome.   "If we live like animals, we die like animals!" the Doctor shouts.  The final act of the Cold War is the backdrop for the viewer's real life.  Imagine, many people think this is a weak story to go out on, but actually, the story question's toxic masculinity, challenges the viewer with the idea that sometimes it takes more strength not to fight, and what defines the progression of a people.  I don't know about you, but the Doctor stating: Somewhere there is injustice, somewhere there is Tyranny, and somewhere else, the tea is getting cold.  C'mon Ace, we have work to do.  Sorry for paraphrasing.  Too lazy to look up the quote.  But if that is not Doctor Who, then I will just be wrong about the matter.

It's a double shot of DOCTOR WHO discussion this week on the MUTTER'S SPIRAL Podcast!  We have our great friends Kim Rogers & Sage Young of HeadOverFeels.com back with us to discuss their thoughts on Series 10 of DOCTOR WHO - they liked a lot (Sarah Dollard, Rona Munro, Peter Capaldi, Pearl Mackie, Michelle Gomez), but they were also really disappointed with how the character of Bill was handled and treated.  They pull no punches in their critique, which is great - their love for the show and for Bill is evident in their high expectations and honest appraisal of how it all went.   BUT, before the series 10 recap, we jump FORWARD in time to discuss the naming of JODIE WHITTAKER as the 13th Doctor with KIM (flying solo this time) - we get her reactions and thoughts on how Jodie will do, plus Kim gives a great and impassioned exhortation about the need for more women of color in the Whoniverse as well as her dream for DOCTOR WHO to be an incubator of new and diverse talent, both on screen and off. SO - it's 36 minutes with Kim on Jodie Whittaker followed by an hour of Kim & Sage on Series 10 - a double-header of WHO content this week! NOTES: This episode has some EXPLICIT language, so be warned. :)  That "E" is there for a reason this week!

I'm back! Yes, another (unexpected) hiatus down and here I am again! Yeah, as I say in my introduction, I've been really behind on podcasting these last few months due to dealing with some fairly heavy medical stuff, but, despite all that, I'm hoping to get back on the saddle and really determined to get this podcast whipped back into shape. So, in the spirit of all of that, in this return episode, you'll find my belated review for the last Christmas special, 'The Return of Doctor Mysterio'. I just really wanted to get that one covered before my foray into S10 of the new series, so that I could feel 'caught up', per se. Now, I had honestly also hoped this episode would be out before the new Doctor Who episode aired (and recorded it before then, as you'll be able to tell when I talk about it coming up), but pesky technical issues and Life Stuff slowed things down a few days, so it is a teeny bit late (speaking of which, I had to use a temporary different recording set-up, so there were a few teeny sound issues, but probably not enough for anyone to really notice). Oh well. Anyway, again in this episode is my long overdue review of the Christmas special, as well as talk about anything from my squee about the return of Rona Munro and the Mondasian Cybermen from the Classic series, to the upcoming Atlanta Doctor Who convention Wholanta, to Bill being our first incontrovertibly gay companion on the televised series (so, yeah, not including my beloved Izzy Sinclair from the DWM comics who was also a lesbian, of course), to my great love of the superhero and comics genre, to Nice Guys (tm) and Sexy Lamps, etc. So, yeah, I hope you all will join me for my review and episode discussion. Tom Sutcliffe talks to Michael Holroyd about why he put his own family in the spotlight in his late 50s novel A Dog's Life, only published in the UK after the death of his parents. Family secrets and a doctor's revenge are at the heart of Herman Koch's darkly comic novel, while Hugo Blick's new television series, An Honourable Woman, explores how the sins of the father resonate in the present. The playwright Rona Munro looks ahead to a trilogy of plays which chart the rise and fall of Scotland's Royal Family, from James I to III, with tales of love, war, treachery and intrigue. Producer: Katy Hickman.
