In this episode, for this winter's extremely-belated Christmas episode, the randomizer goes all the way back to 2004 to pick a straight-to-DVD anthology feature in which everyone's favorite classic Disney animated characters were given some of the most horrendously hideous CGI makeovers you ever done seen, just so they could star in a bunch of even-cheaper holiday stories about everything Christmas is all about: sick ice skating moves, espionage, chronic embarrassment, blacklight-induced violent rage, and of course the act of naming a dog Murray. Needless to say, they couldn't get Kelsey Grammer to narrate this one. Join Tony Goldmark, Dave Cobb, Tyler Green and Cassie Shima as they regift MICKEY'S TWICE UPON A CHRISTMAS! A big week for beginnings this week, with a new Doctor, a new origin story for the Daleks, and a whole new approach to defeating the bad guys. Oh, and a new podcast to discuss them all on. So let's welcome Patrick Troughton to the studio floor, as we discuss The Power of the Daleks. Notes and links The most recent Blu-ray release of The Power of the Daleks was the Special Edition in 2020, which includes a compilation of all the surviving footage, including material shot on an 8mm film camera pointing at a TV screen. This material was also included on the Lost in Time DVD release way back in 2004. Simon also mentions a site which chronicles the upsetting history of Doctor Who's missing episodes. It's called The Destruction of Time, and it's well worth reading, if a bit dispiriting at times. The Omnirumour was a series of rumours arising during 2013 that as many as 90 missing Doctor Who episodes had been found and were ready for return to the BBC Archives, possibly as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations. This didn't happen, obviously, but we did at least get nine episodes: five episodes of The Enemy of the World and four of The Web of Fear. Let's continue the tradition: here is Elizabeth Sandifer's essay on this story, which (inevitably) discusses the importance of mercury to the new Doctor's character. Nathan and Brendan refer to Kieran Hodgson's Bad Doctor Who Impressions version of The Daleks, which is something you should go and watch immediately. James very thoughtfully plugs Brendan and Richard's new podcast about The Avengers, called The Three-Handed Game, in which they are joined by old friend of the podcast Steven B to discuss episodes from different eras in the history of the show. At the end of the episode, Simon recounts the story of the gradual revelation of The Power of the Daleks throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s. Among the things he mentions are Peter Haining's Doctor Who: A Celebration (1983), the Radio Times Doctor Who 20th Anniversary Special (also 1983), The Making of Doctor Who by Malcolm Hulke and Terrance Dicks (2nd edition, 1976), an edition of DreamWatch Bulletin (possibly issue 121 in December 1993) announcing the upcoming publication of the telesnaps in Doctor Who Magazine, and the discovery by Damian Shanahan of some clips from this story in an Australian TV Show called Perspective: C for Computer. Flight Through Entirety discussed The Power of the Daleks in Episode 11: Bum Wetting. Follow us Nathan is on X as @nathanbottomley, Brendan is @brandybongos, James is @ohjamessellwood, and Simon is @simonmoore72. The 500 Year Diary theme was composed by Cameron Lam. For now at least, 500 Year Diary shares a social media presence with Flight Through Entirety. So you can follow us on Mastodon and Bluesky, as well as on X and Facebook. Our website is at 500yeardiary.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll write next week's shownotes in a completely incomprehensible acrostic code. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. Flight Through Entirety will be back at Christmas in July to discuss The Return of Doctor Mysterio, and we'll be covering Peter Capaldi's final year on the show after that, concluding with Twice Upon a Time at Christmas. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire will be back a couple of days after the screening of the first two episodes of Season 1 of the Ncuti Gatwa Era on 11 May. In the meantime, you can hear our hot takes on the four episodes we've seen of Doctor Who's second RTD era. There's also Startling Barbara Bain, our Space: 1999 commentary podcast. We've covered the first four episodes of Series 1; Episode 5 should be out in the next couple of weeks. Maximum Power will be back later in the year to talk about the final series of Blakes 7. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we said farewell to Star Trek: Enterprise by watching that universally acknowledged Star Trek war crime, These Are the Voyages….

"DOCTOR... I LET YOU GO." The 60th Anniversary Specials of Doctor Who are finally in full swing, so before November ends, we have one last trilogy to revisit. Despite various circumstances stacked against him, such as unfair preconceptions and people growing tired of Moffat's storytelling style, Peter Capaldi had made his mark as a truly fantastic incarnation of titular Time Lord, and has only grown more beloved over time. So, with his exit in 2017 coinciding with Moffat's exit as showrunner, how did their final chapters fare? Come watch with Brian and Alec to find out as they revisit the Twelfth Doctor's final trilogy: World Enough and Time, The Doctor Falls, and Twice Upon a Time!
Ryan O'Reilly returns to the show for a deep dive into the George Lucas-produced surrealist film Twice Upon a Time, featuring Lorenzo Music playing *another* orange animal, dirty cuts that got censored, and animator fist fights! --- https://linktr.ee/ChannelKRTPodcast Edited by Jacob Miller Show logo by Marissa Thorburn: https://twitter.com/KermitWaz0wski Show theme by Andy HG and Tyler Green
Sometimes Time Ram does something really silly. This time, we take the Peter Capaldi episode 'Twice Upon a Time' in which the tweflth Doctor meets the first Doctor and ram it into... the first Doctor, William Hartnell. Who now meets himself, coming out of 'The Tenth Planet'? No that doesn't work. Could this be another 'Good Man Goes to War'? Well, you'll have to listen to find out. It's 1966, Peter Capaldi is 6 years old, and we've definitively shown which production team is the maddest! Possibly.
And we're live... from Planet Earth, with the hunky, spunky Lyall Brooks! Yayyy! This week, AW completely humiliates himself in front of our EXTRA-special guest by reliving an embarrassing story INVOLVING Mr. Brooks! *Fail Music* Also in this super-campy episode, the dudes oil-up with some Men-o-War for Manowar's Kings of Metal, before discussing the Thing About Men with the hit Off-Broadway musical. We received a lot of feedback about the 'lousy 2030' part being a bit too long and dystopian, so we figured we'd also offer a new edit that features only the good 2030 aka #thegoodfuture :) I hope you enjoy this version; if so, please be sure to subscribe and share it widely! This is a special new edit of my recent film Twice Upon a Time see https://www.futuristgerd.com/sharing/twiceuponatime/ and https://youtu.be/BanqTNbTotU This film is a passionate call for action to everyone - we must act now to ensure the good future. Our attitude contains our future, and the choices we make today create our future. We are to be architects of the future - not its victims (Buckminster Fuller).

Tread Perilously's annual Tread Merrily tradition returns with the Doctor Who Christmas special "Twice Upon a Time." As the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) resists his coming regeneration, the TARDIS lands him in a very peculiar place: Earth's South Pole in 1985. There, he runs into the First Doctor (David Bradley) as he also tries to avoid regenerating. Soon, the two incarnations land in a heap of trouble, starting with the sudden appearance of a World War I British captain. But when the Doctors and the captain come into contact with Testimony, a memory-scraping AI from the far future, the nature of the problem leads to a startling revelation for both of the Doctors. Justin declares Freddy's Dead as the worst Nightmare on Elm Street movie. Erik's frustration with ex-showrunner Chris Chibnall bubbles to the surface. The nature of Christopher Eccleston's "return" to the Doctor is explored. Justin learns about the Fourteenth Doctor and the other extra Doctors played by David Tennant. Justin offers some James Bond opinions. Erik and Justin disagree if a person is the sum of their memories or not. World War I becomes an unavoidable topic. VR headgear is decried and "The Ankle-Touchers" makes its debut.
Mark Gagliardi (Blood & Treasure) is joining us again for the sequel to Once Upon Upon A Christmas. Santa's daughters Rudolpha and Kristen are back and even more evil and bird-brained than before. Will the longest infomercial you've ever seen ruin the North Pole or save Kristen's brain? Only this movie can tell. Stephen James Taylor - Musician & Explorer : Trans-tonal Music - Transcendent ThinkingStephen James Taylor has a unique musical identity. His style has often been called “Afro-futuristic) as it represents a blend of classical, rock, blues, gospel, world music, homemade instruments, and avante garde. His past projects include scoring Richard Tanne's 2020 Amazon film Chemical Hearts, music for the Star Wars Cantina at Disneyland's Galaxy's Edge (2019) {the first microtonal music ever in rotation at Disneyland), the PBS documentary by Charles Burnett entitled Power To Heal (2018), Maya Angelou-And Still I Rise (2016), Richard Tanne's theatrical release, Southside With You (2016), Tom Bradley: Bridging the Divide (2015), People Are The Sky, (2015), Marvel's TV Series The Black Panther, music for theme parks such as Disney World and The Red Sea Astrarium, Universal's The Adventures of Brer Rabbit, Disney's Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas (for which he won Best Original Score at the 2004 DVDX Awards), Teachers Pet, a Disney animated feature with wide theatrical release in 2003, and most of the films directed by Academy Award winner, Charles Burnett including To Sleep With Anger and the blues documentary, Warming By the Devil's Fire produced by Martin Scorsese. In 2001 he wrote underscore and produced some of the songs for Clark Johnson's Boycott (HBO films) as well as his 2018 Netflix film, Juanita (2017). In 1996 he was commissioned to write an orchestral suite for the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics and was one of the conductors of the Atlanta Symphony for that occasion. In 1993, Stephen received an Emmy nomination for an R&B song he wrote for I'll Fly Away as well as a Daytime Emmy nomination for his classical orchestral score for an episode of the animated series, The Lion King's Timon and Pumbaa. Other Emmy nominations have been for the PBS movie Brother Future (1991), and Raw Toonage an animated series for Disney. In 1999 and 2000 he has received Annie nominations for his work on Disney's Mickey Mouseworks. He has also done string arrangements for James Taylor and for Crosby, Stills, and Nash. He is currently working on a cartoon series for Netflix. After graduating from Stanford University in 1976 with a B.A. in music, he studied composition for four years with Henri Lazarof, professor of music at UCLA. He studied microtonality with Erv Wilson for 20 years with whom he helped develop a new 810 key microtonal keyboard used in many of the above scores. Taylor's second chamber symphony was commissioned and premiered by the Pasadena Chamber Orchestra in 1983. The Detroit Symphony later performed it in 1990. His various chamber works have been performed throughout the country. He has done a great deal of composing in surround sound. His 2001 “COME ALIVE” premiered at the El Paso Microhoot and has been presented many times since. More recently his 55 minute surround suite, “MUSIC FROM THE OTHER WAKANDA”, was selected by the composition faculty at Virgina Tech to be presented as part of its 2022 Afrofuturist themed “Cubefest”. A filmmaker as well, he has also completed some short films of his own: the award winning documentary, SURFING THE SONIC SKY, the science fiction short, I AM HERE. as well a research documentary about the micro- geometry of subatomic matter with co-director Jesus Trevino called “Gurule Shells, A Quantum Metaphor”. A few samples: "Red Sun Blue Highway" (fretless acoustic blues guitar} https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgBIf... “The Bradley Variations” (31 tone guitar solo)
We watch "Twice Upon a Time" (Series 10, Episode 13) where the Doctor has doubts about continuing with his existence after battling the Cybermen... but reconsiders after encountering himself post battling the Cybermen. Whilst said Cyber-jerking is occurring, "Bill" returns to show the Doctors what wonderful lives they had, “Nardole” shows up because... who cares... it's "Nardy!", and then "Clara" shows up to either infuriate the Clara haters or invigorate the Clara lovers. Since I count myself in the latter category, I have one final thing to say on this episode: Geronimo!!!
This week, there's a massive Silurian spaceship pre-crashing in the direction of Planet Earth, and the whole gang is on board for the ride. Brendan's on the lookout for discarded teeth, Nathan's holed up in an escape pod watching reruns of Mitchell and Webb, James's progress is being hindered by the unfeasibly large amounts of vegetable matter in his pants, and Fiona is doing a terrific job of keeping her feisty new companions under control. Somehow, life finds a way, in Dinosaurs on a Spaceship. Notes and Links Nathan clearly thinks that the US is in Europe, since we were last there in Daleks in Manhattan and will be there again in The Angels Take Manhattan (not to mention The Chase, some of which is even set in Africa). Understandably enough, he has also forgotten The Abominable Snowmen. Before David Bradley took on the role of the First Doctor in Twice Upon a Time, the First Doctor was played by Richard Hurndall, who played Nebrox in a gloriously terrible episode of Blakes 7 called Assassin. (Yes, I know, every episode of Blakes 7 is gloriously terrible.) As James rightly points out, the velociraptors in this episode had previously featured in Primeval, which was a family-friendly Sunday night science fiction series which mostly involved dinosaurs attacking Dougie Henshall. A fun show, which kind of outstayed its welcome a bit. And, as promised, here are some lovely photos of Fiona's dog Aston and his toy triceratops Tricey. Original broadcast date April 26, 2018. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2018/04/binary-system-podcast-124-all-doctor-who-all-the-time-mostly/ The plan was to talk about two topics this episode: the latest season of Doctor Who, and the first season of American Gods. And then we remembered that we never usually plan things, so why should we stick with a plan this time? Listen in as we ramble all over the place with everything we loved about the Twelfth Doctor's final episodes "The Doctor Falls" and "Twice Upon a Time," and ask the hard questions: Would the First Doctor really have been that sexist? Which end of the ship was closest to the black hole? How is the Thirteenth Doctor going to get along with the TARDIS? And why did Elizabeth's head explode when Kathryn pointed out that of COURSE River Song is a Companion? We also wander off into tangents like Metal Men of Gandahar and Fantastic Planet, plans for the Hugo Awards, and how Neil deGrasse Tyson would like to die. The outro music this week is the Twelfth Doctor's theme by the amazing Murray Gold. https://www.bbc.co.uk/music/artists/46e5aa54-d0a2-4121-8ad8-e5d6147c0c08 Here's an article about the animated reconstruction of the Classic Doctor Who story "Power of the Daleks". http://www.indiewire.com/2016/11/doctor-who-power-of-the-daleks-patrick-troughton-regeneration-recovered-1201747920/
