Gretchen Maurer has been a stylist since 1980. I loved updo work straight away and did my first brides while in school. In 1989 she bought a salon and worked it for 5 years. During that time, she was discovered by Paul DiGrigoli at a hair show where she was doing volunteer finish work on Goldwell models. She worked for Paul for a decade doing platform and taught updo classes for his advanced academy. In 1998 she created weddinghair.com which won best beauty site by Brides magazine. She created 100’s of hairstyles and sold 1000’s of step by step bridal hairstyles to brides all over the world over the internet and on Behind the Chair.com. In 1998 her first book, The Business of Bridal Beauty was published by Milady. In 1999 she was a national speaker for The Association of Bridal Consultants in New Orleans educating wedding consultants all about the wedding morning. In 2000 she went 100% freelance doing weddings up and down the east coast as well as NYC. Being moved by all the drama and chaos she saw at wedding mornings she wrote The Morning of Your Wedding in 2008. From 2005 to 2015 she worked with her husband in a couple of residential recovery facilities as a coach and trauma counselor. Now a certified clarity coach her heart is again all in with coaching stylists through her Facebook Group, Updo and Hairstyle Education. Over the last year she rewrote The Morning of Your Wedding and released this month as an e-book titled Wedding Morning Success: Your guide for avoiding the chaos and drama most brides experience. In today’s episode, we are going to explore the 6 personalities of brides of brides and how you might use this information to connect with them and at the end of today’s episode, I’m going to ask you to do something for me - so stay to the end. Those of you who have ever attended my Business and Branding 5 Day Boot Camp, you’ll know that we play a little game where we pair up the descriptions with the bride personality and I have to say that 9 times out of 10, people get them spot on and I think they surprise themselves because they’d never really thought about brides in the form of a category and I said in Episode 002 that when you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing no-one and if you remember I talked about gathering all the information you can on one specific personality of bride and then creating your portfolio of work to appeal to that bride. A lot of stylists don’t agree, they still think that they need to keep their options open and they can do any look and they don’t want to be limited. Some even say, what if i want to chose 2 or 3 is that ok and well my short answer is “do what you like” my longer answer is, just concentrate on one, nail that, get booked continuously with those brides and then look at attracting another. A lot of the time, we launch our Bridal Business to crickets and the problem is that we are in such a hurry to show off our skills that we get this brain fog and we think that the reason why brides aren’t booking is because: - We’re too new, - We’re too expensive, - We don’t have a full portfolio So we’ve spent all this money on our education and with no clients we freak out and go into panic mode and what most of us do - including me when I first started - is you think, right "I need bums on seats and I need to build up my portfolio". You start asking all and sundry if you can do makeovers on them (because that will build the portfolio) and then you do the most stupid thing that anyone in this industry could do and you offer FREE or low cost bridal trials because you think its ok - that will get them through the door! But this is really like sticking a bandaid over the problem. You’re temporarily fixing your problem and when you eventually rip off that bandaid - its going to hurt.
