Gretchen Maurer, hairdresser, consultant, educator, and author, joined the We Do Wedding Podcast to talk about what she's learned after being in the wedding beauty business for over thirty years--and why she's transferred some of that knowledge into a popular educational Facebook group and several books.Gretchen was the first person to launch a wedding hair/e-commerce website back in 1998 and has been passionate about educating couples AND hair stylists ever since. She's become an expert in the "successful wedding morning" after learning all the things that can prevent starting your big day right. We chatted about why it's so important for hair and makeup artists to wear multiple hats, and why having one particular style you're good at isn't enough to serve wedding clients well.We really enjoyed talking to Gretchen about what all our jobs have in common: our clients are vulnerable, and we work with them on an extremely meaningful and potentially anxiety-filled day. As a result, her stories and advice are full of wisdom and soul. Where to find her books: The Business of Bridal Beauty and The Morning of Your Wedding: How Will Yours Be? The aim of this episode is to help you develop an affordable and doable skincare routine, whatever your budget. Ciara will also be talking us through the most popular treatments for brides, and crucially, the order in which to get them! This is wedding beauty prep 101, so you might want to have a pen and paper at the ready before you hit play!Episode Breakdown: Bridal Beauty Prep: Your Essential GuideWedding tip: Celina's tip this week is to use this handy formula to figure out how much wine you need for your wedding!Main topic: This week, we're talking about wedding beauty prep, which, I think we can all agree, is an intimidating topic! That's why we wanted to sit down with freelance beauty therapist Ciara McCluskey to talk through treatments, products and lifestyle factors (is anyone out there actually drinking two litres of water per day!?), specifically, which ones are worth the investment! As well as answering lots and lots of listener questions across skincare, tanning, waxing, nails, and brows, Ciara gave us her top tips for creating a foolproof skincare regime (and sticking to it!) and talked us through the ideal wedding beauty timeline. Enjoy!Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “I'm not coming with an exciting question about my upcoming nuptials as they are no longer going ahead. I collected my wedding dress in September and by the end of October, my fiancé told me he had changed his mind. I now have an unused, unworn and unaltered couture gown sitting in my wardrobe that I cannot sell. The price was €3,595 and I have already reduced it to €3,000 but to no avail. I have an advert on sellmyweddingdress.ie and have contacted a number of bridal boutiques, which have been reluctant to sell my gown. The only place that has come back to me said the highest they would offer to sell it for is €2,000. Any tips on where I can get the most for my dress? I don't want to sell it for half price.” Our response for this listener is that, unfortunately, it's unlikely she'll be able to sell her wedding dress for the price she's hoping, which is around 85% of the full retail price. Generally speaking, we recommend selling for 50% - 70% of the full retail price. That said, we think it's worth casting a wide net with online marketplaces, including Depop and Adverts, and maximising the chance of selling by using lots of keywords.Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Celina's suggesting you book tickets for a supper club. Her pick for Dublin is Ethiopian pop-up restaurant Gursha! Thanks for listening! Got something to add to the conversation? Shoot us a mail at hello@onefabday.com. Gretchen Maurer has been a stylist since 1980. I loved updo work straight away and did my first brides while in school. In 1989 she bought a salon and worked it for 5 years. During that time, she was discovered by Paul DiGrigoli at a hair show where she was doing volunteer finish work on Goldwell models. She worked for Paul for a decade doing platform and taught updo classes for his advanced academy. In 1998 she created weddinghair.com which won best beauty site by Brides magazine. She created 100’s of hairstyles and sold 1000’s of step by step bridal hairstyles to brides all over the world over the internet and on Behind the Chair.com. In 1998 her first book, The Business of Bridal Beauty was published by Milady. In 1999 she was a national speaker for The Association of Bridal Consultants in New Orleans educating wedding consultants all about the wedding morning. In 2000 she went 100% freelance doing weddings up and down the east coast as well as NYC. Being moved by all the drama and chaos she saw at wedding mornings she wrote The Morning of Your Wedding in 2008. From 2005 to 2015 she worked with her husband in a couple of residential recovery facilities as a coach and trauma counselor. Now a certified clarity coach her heart is again all in with coaching stylists through her Facebook Group, Updo and Hairstyle Education. Over the last year she rewrote The Morning of Your Wedding and released this month as an e-book titled Wedding Morning Success: Your guide for avoiding the chaos and drama most brides experience. She is now the creator of a new membership community called https://updosystem.com/

In recent episodes of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we've led crash courses in wedding dress shopping, bridesmaid dress shopping, guest lists, and honeymoons, and now, it's time for another biggie - today, we're talking about all things bridal beauty! This is an area of wedding planning that we get so many questions on, so this week, we're putting those questions to an expert, Aidan Corcoran of the Brown Thomas Beauty Style Team. We've long been huge fans of Aidan's no-nonsense approach to wedding makeup, so we were thrilled to be able to quiz him on all things beauty!Episode Breakdown: Episode 25: Everything You Need to Know About Bridal BeautyWedding tip: Think about tipping - chat to your other half about who you'll tip ahead of your wedding, how much you'll tip and make sure you have cash in envelopes ready to go on the day.Main topic: Regardless of whether you're a full-blown beauty nerd or a makeup-only-on-the-weekend kind of girl, it's only natural to want to feel as confident as possible on the big day, and for many brides, that means wearing makeup. That's why we recruited the help of Aidan Corcoran from the Brown Thomas Beauty Style Team, to offer expert skincare and make-up advice, and tell us about some of his favourite products across the department store's extensive Beauty Hall.Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “My best friend in the whole world is pregnant and her due date is 11 days after the wedding. I'm really hoping that she'll be able to attend but, of course, she'll have to wait and see how she feels on the day, but I'm wondering, if she does make it, is there anything I can do to make her feel more comfortable? I would love to still include her in the day in some way, too, if possible. We previously asked her to sing at the ceremony but, on her suggestion, we changed things around when she told us about the pregnancy!" Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In the theme of this week's episode, we're recommending that you treat yourself to a really indulgent pre-wedding beauty treatment. Thanks for listening!
