Figuring out your true passion takes time and my conversation with Leigh Acord (Watson) shows you how long that journey can take. After painting a mural of a tree for her sister's nursery in 2001, she slowly built a book of clients by doing what she loved on her free time while working in the corporate world.Leigh decided to follow her heart and launched Watson Murals (formerly Watson Design) in 2004. Since then, Leigh has thrived on taking a broad concept from a client and turning it into something that speaks directly to that person, whether it be a mural in the bedroom of a five-year-old boy or a larger than life showpiece in a venue where thousands of patrons will see it and be inspired.Watson Murals has been a smashing success and if you don't believe me.....take a look at her clients on her webpage (were talking Fortune 500).Be ready to be inspired and laugh hard in this episode.https://watsonmurals.com/Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/hphs1995. A trip abroad to London during her junior year at the University of Texas helped Leigh make the move to New York City after graduation in 1999. In New York she picked up valuable sales experience at Getty Images, a company that was in the process of becoming a juggernaut of its industry. (Were talking about Facebook type of dominance in the Social Media space) In 1995 Mark Getty founded Getty Images by 2006 he sold it to Hellman & Friedman for $2.6 billion (today's value is 3 billion with an estimate annual revenue of 1 billion). Leigh moved back to Austin, Texas in the mid aughts and found another inspirational founder in the wine company Scout and Cellar. Our conversation shows that she loves to talk about the grape and the clean crafted process for wine making.Opening Song - Can't Do Without You by Caribou Ending Song - People Everyday by Arrested DevelopmentSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/hphs1995. You might be saying to yourself - "Shelburne, what are you doing?"Well, the first interview gives the listener John's backstory.* This was rerecorded after the first unscripted episode. The framework of the episode is the following -John walks the listener thru his experience at Kansas and his part with the Jayhawk Music Festival (Link to setlist). Mistake about the Urge. They were in the 1995 lineup. His time at TCU sheds light on all of the odd jobs he worked while studying and his first experience with Bloomberg. He walks thru his interview story with Bloomberg and working in the analytics being hired at Bloomberg and the analytics department. He touches on trading systems and the genius of the trading system strategy. He then goes thru -Stories about moving out to San FranciscoWorking for Bloomberg in San Francisco and being so young.Traveling Around the West CoastLiving in Cow HollowRoomates in San Francisco and where he lived. The HP crew in San Francisco and Wild Times while living in San Francisco.Moving back to DallasWorking as a corporate bond sales person at Southwest Securities, Tejas and Esposito. Why he moved to London.Living in London - the good and the badWorking at Algomi.Traveling around Europe.Having kids in LondonRaising a baby in London. The recording studio apartment - Wessex Sound Studios - (Link to Wikipedia)Coming back to Dallas.Setting up CatFIX and how COVID changed everything. The ending goes over some ground rules for the interviews.Intro and Exit is Ellie Goulding - Rythem of the NightEllie Goulding - Rhythm of the Night in the Live Lounge
Why is John Shelburne putting together a podcast -He wants to learn how to record a podcast and distribute it to an audience. He wants an opportunity to catch up with classmates and learn about their businesses/careers and any news that they want to share. This has NO affiliation with Highland Park High School or Highland Park Alumni Association. The concept of the podcast -A phone call chat with me that will be recorded with a classmate of 1995 and will be distributed on apple, Spotify and the website.I have setup an easy online scheduling tool that will allow class members to sign up without emailing me or calling me.The link is on the podcast webpage and CatFIX.bizPossibility of a Tiered Content Model, Walled Access or Ads -Let's say this takes off and I have to dedicate more time to this project than I originally intended then I am going to have to figure how to monetize the content. In that case you might hear a few sponsor pitches or even ads.I am also looking at private podcasts for class members that want to share their story but do not want to promote it to the general public. It is all up to the person that is being interviewed.Patreon is a service that allows content creators to setup tiered access to content.I am trying to set this up where HPHS class of 95 members will have free access.Friends and Family of the podcast interviewee would have another rate and Highland Park alumni another rate.At the end of the day this is about catching up with class members and giving them a chance to tell their story to an audience. The reunions are so far apart that we don't have time in one weekend to catchup with everyone.Opening tune - Clocks (Coldplay & Bueno Vista Social Club)Youtube Link -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k85X3ZGwYtkExit - Dumb & Dumber Lloyd trades the van for a moped sceneSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/hphs1995.
