A rare mix from the critically acclaimed experimentalist. Lucrecia Dalt isn't your typical electronic artist. The Colombian singer and composer approaches music-making in the way a fantasy writer builds worlds. Over the past two decades, she's produced a catalogue that reads more like a bookshelf of strange, interlinked novels, each with its own laws, characters and textures, extending the one before it. Dalt's RA Mix is a fascinating entry into the series (and will sit comfortably with RA's recent archival playlist, Mixes From Artists Who Don't Call Themselves DJs, But Probably Should). Take the opening track, "Cellophane," by Beak>, the band led by Portishead's Geoff Barrow. The lyrics set the tone for the hour to come: "Now the wind has blown down / Now the truth is laid out there." True to Dalt's oeuvre, RA.1005 has little regard for convention. Kick drums and beatmatching are nowhere to be heard; instead, she offers a collage of inspiration, drawing connections across eras, moods and geographies. The mix includes the work of close collaborators (David Sylvian, Juana Molina and Niño de Elche) as well as excursions into psychedelic jazz (Lloyd's Miller's "Gol-E-Gandom"), sombre downtempo (Muslimgauze's "Enchante, Monsieur") and Korean pop (Leenalchi's "Magic Pocket). Spanning just over an hour, it unfolds like another chapter in Dalt's ongoing project of world-building through sound. @lucreciadalt Find the tracklist and interview at https://ra.co/podcast/1023

Melbourne-based musician Envy Marshall is an artist who doesn't care for trends or fashions or being the 'next big thing'. Her musical journey is more selfish, in a way, in that she creates music that means something to her first and foremost. But when that music is rooted in life experiences and self-worth, it suddenly becomes accessible to the masses. Or at least those who believe that you are the master of your own destiny and, as such, deserve to be happy. Deserve to be free. Deserve to be confident in yourself. After announcing her intentions earlier this year with the explosive and confronting track Like A Man, Marshall returns via the path least expected with Hurt, a song dripping with emotional vulnerability amid haunting piano, laced with searing guitar riffs and a vocal delivery with the unmistakable swagger of an artist for whom boundaries are a source of inspiration rather than fear. Following the viral success of Like A Man, Envy Marshall is proving herself to be one of the most vital independent voices in today's rock scene. With Hurt, she doesn't just raise the bar - she rips it off the wall. With her debut album in the can and nearing release date, Marshall joined HEAVY for an open and honest discussion about her life and music, starting with Hurt and how it has been received."I think people are sick of hearing positive music," she measured, "and I think this song has really touched a lot of people. We've had some great success with it in Australia, but it's been number one in a couple of countries over in Europe, which has been amazing. I was a bit worried about putting out a ballad because you never know how it's going to land, but it's landed really well. People are just sick of candy pop, and they want to actually listen to something that means something to them."We ask if the song is more about hurting yourself or inflicting hurt on others."I think when we get hurt, we like to hurt. It's a reaction," she mused. "So I think this song is about taking power back after being really badly hurt. And I think we've all been really hurt. I think we live in a lot of hurt, especially these days. The world is crazy. I don't think we need lots of lipstick, positive songs. I think it's a real thing that a lot of us are in a lot of pain, so this song, for me, was about being hurt; being let down and finding a way to move that through my body - not through revenge - because that's where you start. When you get hurt, first you get angry, then you get sad, and you get angry again. Then you get jealous, then you get some envy, and you go through all those emotions, and then finally you get to revenge, which is a better feeling. And that sort of gets you out of that feeling of hurt. So it's really about moving through those emotions and coming out the other end of it, the hero of your own story."In the full interview, Envy discussed her recent professional developments, emphasizing Hurt's exploration of complex emotions and the importance of processing pain rather than seeking revenge. She elaborated on her creative process, highlighting her collaboration with Mike Young at Armory Studios, where the haunting piano intro for Hurt was developed. Envy cited musical influences such as Portishead and In This Moment, and emphasised her commitment to artistic freedom in her songwriting. She shared plans for her forthcoming album, which will showcase a gritty rock sound, and teased her new single Looking Good and Feeling Famous, set for release in September, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Kicking off this week's ElecSoul with a classic from Galliano, one of the standout acts from the Acid Jazz era on Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label. I'd been chatting on IG about the scene back in the day, and it reminded me how Galliano carved out a sound that went way beyond the standard Acid Jazz blueprint. From there, I'm keeping close to that early crossover energy into the world of trip hop, breaks and dusty beats, with flavours that nod to Rae & Christian and Unkle. James Lavelle's MoWax label was huge at the time, collaborating with artists like Portishead and pushing boundaries across sound and style. You get the idea. This week's selection leans into a bit of nostalgia, but not without moving forward. There's even a cut from Felix Da Housecat tucked in before we shift gears into house, garage and some late-night footwork. Hope you enjoy the ride, 49 minutes of memory, motion and movement.

A (relatively) in-depth analysis of American singer, songwriter, composer, and actor Isaac Hayes Jr. in (just over) forty five minutes - this is the longest Low-Noise episode to date, which seems rather fitting as Hayes is known for his lengthy musical compositions. As a successful in-house songwriter, session musician and producer, Hayes was one of the creative forces behind Stax Records in the 1960s. With his working partner David Porter he wrote the Sam & Dave hit Soul Man, widely considered to be one of the most influential songs of all time. Hayes also had a successful solo career - he released several successful albums such as Hot Buttered Soul (1969) and Black Moses (1971). Hayes also worked as a film composer. In 1997 Hayes was introduced to a new generation of fans when he provided the voice for the character of 'Chef' in the animated TV series South Park. The show ran until 2006.In this episode I am in discussion with Bhoke.Mathew Woodallhttps://www.facebook.com/share/1F15mx4ea3/https://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. Paula OS is a Chilean-born, Argentina-based producer, singer, and DJ crafting atmospherically rich electronica influenced by acts like Radiohead, Portishead, and Björk. She launched her solo live project in 2017—dreamy vocals with hypnotic textures—which eventually led to a collaboration with Hernán Cattáneo and Soundexile on Renaissance: the alluring ‘Harvest' EP. Earlier this year, she founded her own label, Sopor Music, kicking things off with ‘Image', a solo six-track album coded with electronica and emotional hues. On this Balance Selections mix, Paula OS delivers a dynamic take on progressive, filled with cerebral moments and pure dancefloor diesel. Featuring tracks from Stimming, Analog Jungs, Stereo Underground & D-Nox, this tightly programmed session shows she's transmitting a unique frequency that's becoming increasingly hard to ignore. @paula_os
During our live interview with Skye Edwards and Ross Godfrey of Morcheeba, I found myself at one stage scrolling through my notes to find a description of the band's sound I'd queried using Chat GPT. I couldn't find it at the time but here is what it said:“Morcheeba's signature rich, mellow music became the soundtrack of the suburban homes and chillout rooms of the late 90s and early 00s”.That's a composite of much that has been written about the band over some 30 years, and it doesn't really flatter does it? “The devil's own lounge band” is the quip that Skye Edwards recalled from an early review. The music press loves to characterise bands, but in Morcheeba's case, it comes across somewhat dumbed down. Contained within Morcheeba's mellow sounds are multiple layers of influence that reveal hidden depths with every listen. The interview with the band for this launch episode for The Art of Longevity (Season 12!) manages to scratch just beneath the surface at least. That said, Morcheeba know their place in making music that can be the perfect backdrop, to quote Ross Godfrey:“We've always made relaxing music. You can get home from work on a Friday night, have a glass of wine or smoke a spliff or whatever and play our music”. On the other hand, the sheer depth of their musical influences and references can be breathtaking. Within the mix are Bacharach, Barry and Moriconi of course, but also Brazilian late 60s Tropicalia, and somewhat less obviously (but most certainly in terms of always impressive guitar work) classic rock from Ross Godfrey's childhood favourites Neil Young and Jimi Hendrix. Meanwhile, Skye's lyrics and styles include 70s country music, along with ska and dub reggae. All of this is somehow weaved into the seamless Morcheeba sound on the new outstanding album Escape The Chaos. Launched in the mid-90s and quickly swept along on the British ‘trip-hop' wave, Morcheeba outlasted most of their contemporaries including Portishead (who refused to heed to the repeated calls to re-form). Morcheeba is one of those bands you might easily have forgotten about. And yet the band has (give or take a short hiatus and shuffling of personnel sometime between 2003 and 2009) steadily worked their way to 11 albums over 30 years, most of it under the radar of music industry gatekeepers and without much love from the music press. “They hated us” was Skye Edward's response when I brought up the subject of early press reviews. And yet, Pitchfork gave their debut album Who Can You Trust (1996) an 8.3/10, but then stopped loving them as the band's popularity took off. Recent single We Live & Die references “in the old days of NME” which had me going on to Wayback Machine to dig out an NME review from 1998 of the breakthrough album Big Calm. It was the now legendary music critic Syvia Patterson, who wrote:“Morcheeba you see, sounds nothing like Portishead. They sound like they like life”.That has certainly proved a lasting observation. And Morcheeba has proved a lasting British trip hop institution. One of the few 90s bands that just seem to keep on getting better and better. This live episode launches a new partnership between The Art of Longevity and Bang & Olufsen. Pro wrestling has plenty of stipulation matches, but one of the most common is the Street Fight. It's essentially just another name for a No DQ match... or a Hardcore match... or a Weapons Wild match... or whatever other silly name you come up with. Regardless of the name, this match type has inspired this episode. Andrew and returning guest Warren Hayes (The Mr. Warren Hayes Show, Voices of Wrestling) play songs that have street suffixes in the title (street, road, drive, avenue, etc.), or in some cases are the names of actual streets. Artists played include Elton John, TSHA, Radiohead, Annie Lennox, Bobby Womack, Portishead, Yellowcard, and many more. Send us a textIf you're looking for a sonic palette cleanser from the mundane, Venamoris' new album To Cross or To Burn is the aural experience you didn't know you needed. Out now via Ipecac Recordings, the album is a seductive, shadowy, and soul-baring effort from the duo of Paula and Dave Lombardo. Yes, that Dave Lombardo—drum god behind Slayer, Mr. Bungle, Misfits, Dead Cross and countless other boundary-pushing projects. But this isn't thrash, metal, or hardcore. Instead, it's something far more intimate and atmospheric—part gothic lullaby, part cinematic fever dream, and entirely its own thing.Think: a darker, stranger Portishead raised on vintage synthesizers and heartbreak. And you're only halfway there.Venamoris, a name derived from the Latin vena amoris ("vein of love"), is a reflection of the real-life partnership between Dave and Paula Lombardo. The musical bond they've cultivated runs just as deep. Paula's roots include everything from backing up Las Vegas legends like Wayne Newton to chasing a singer-songwriter dream in Nashville. With this project, she brings a magnetic presence—equal parts elegance and eerie introspection—on vocals, piano, and synths. Every lyric feels lived-in; every melody, emotionally raw.Engineered and produced by Dave Lombardo, mixed by David A. Lombardo, and mastered by the acclaimed Golden Mastering team, To Cross or To Burn shimmers with sonic depth. Every note and nuance is deliberate, yet full of danger. The Lombardos handle all instrumentation themselves, with Paula on vocals and synths and Dave handling drums, guitars, and more. The album also features contributions from a formidable group of guest musicians, including:Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk) – contrabass on “Stay With Me”Ra Diaz (Suicidal Tendencies, KORN) – bass on “Stain of Pain”Alex Skolnick (Testament) – guitar on “Stain of Pain” and “Burnt Paper”Gary Holt (Slayer, Exodus) – guitar on “Animal Magnetism”Each guest adds a unique brushstroke to the darkly emotional soundscape, enhancing but never overshadowing the central force: Paula's haunting voice and poetic songwriting. The album's opener, “Stay With Me,” is a cinematic dive into surrealist romance—starting in lo-fi crackle and ending in full digital immersion. "Holding On to Nothing" flexes Paula's lyrical teeth as she dissects betrayal with Ben Folds-style piano wrapped in Sabbath-inspired gloom.www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. Things covered: Getting the sound right while recording in a 'cathedral', flight delay, the mundanity of owning a place, Nodi networking function in Alghero, bumping back into Italian, experiences that are both concrete and abstract, dealing with uncertainty, meeting a life-coach, snake-oil, "l'aria fritta" (fried air), what draws us to people selling fried air, having one's buttons pushed over and over again, Sardegna drawing in a dreamcatcher vibe, homemade brick oven and making pizze, primal human experiences, cranio-sacral massages, gong showers (sound baths), golden showers, people talking (or not) about their kinks, piss play, more prevalent than us vanillas, lacking imagination (or perhaps theory of mind), Portishead, Beth Gibbons (singing Gorecki Symphony 3), how to be introduced into something we didn't use to like (e.g. yoga for Lee), the things we end up doing and believing, jam cocktail (listener feedback), unattributed quote from last week to George Saunders' commencement speech (in the links below). --- Related links (and necessary corrections): Beth Gibbons singing Górecki's Symphony No. 3 (not number 5): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YlGYxCSDJUGeorge Saunders' commencement speech at Syracuse: https://genius.com/George-saunders-graduation-speech-at-syracuse-2013-annotated Get in touch with Lee and Simon at info@midlifing.net. ---The Midlifing logo is adapted from an original image by H.L.I.T: https://www.flickr.com/photos/29311691@N05/8571921679 (CC BY 2.0)
This week Ken welcomes singer-songwriter behind the must buy brand new album "Erotica Veronica", Miya Folick. Ken and Miya discuss the troubles of LA, the stress of 2025, trying to be creative and make a living as an artist in 2025, life without respite, no longer being the main character, the dark timeline, allowing yourself to work through your own experience, promoting your stuff, not having kids, growing up as a huge nerd, being social, not getting into music until you were in college, loving doing homework, not having the "cool older brother" effect growing up, college radio, mix tapes, KERTH 101, good peer pressure, Live Journal, being a musician without being able to make every specific tone reference possible, collaboration, songwriting, being an idea generator, planning to learn about music history upon retirement, wanting to shred, Tidal, trusting the algorithym, finding new music, going through music droughts, mood and music, auditory sensitivity tied to your menstral cycle, listening to podcasts, The Ezra Klein Show, The Daily, Democracy Now, Heavyweight, Jonathan Goldman, unresolved issues of the heart, developing parasocial relationships with podcast hosts you listen to, being into super dorky opera competitions, Downtown LA, growing up in Orange County, jumping on the turtleneck bandwagon, master classes at the classical music society, trying and hating acting, the audition process, thinking about a return to acting, Paris, Texas, being inspired by Cinema, Portishead, The Three Colors Trilogy, the magic of cinema, pop music, wanting producers across the country, Steve Albini, the belief that the only good album a band makes is their first album, thinking about going back to or even starting a day job, going to sleep with white noise, not watching TV at night, Marvel Comics in the 1970s, and the nature of storytelling.
For more than 15 years, Sharon Van Etten has worn her heart on her sleeve. Over 7 albums she's processed the raw emotions of life through some incredible songs, and continued to evolve her sound with every album. From early days playing indie folk and Americana, to big anthems, incorporating synths, and now collaborating with her band for the first time on the writing of an album. With The Attachment Theory on deck for her latest, I invited her to Take 5 with her songs of metamorphosis, and what she revealed was the very blueprint of her musical heart.Jethro Tull - 'We Used To Know' Mary Chapin Carpenter - 'Passionate Kisses'The Lemonheads - 'Ever' Nine Inch Nails - 'Terrible Lie' Portishead - 'Only You'

Back in September we made an appearance at the Haarlem Vinyl Festival for a special live podcast on the year 1994! Here's the second part of an abridged version of the show (we've had to cut out the sections we played music on the turntable due to copyright issues). For 1994, we were both astounded at how many great records we found, both established favourites and underrated classics. On this second part, we cover albums by Portishead, Massive Attack, Soundgarden, Blur, Yes, Oasis and more! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The current pushes and pulls / But I’m still here, I’m still rowing / Here in my paper boat / All I know is there’s water and above me the sky."

This week we focus on those magic people who make non league tick. The ones who run the clubs, maybe not in ownership terms but certainly in operational terms, not alone, as they both admit, but people who ensure their club not only survives but thrives in a difficult world, effectively the biggest fans of their clubs and in turn of huge fans of non league. First up, Nigel Osmond, from a dad on the sideline he now finds himself in a full-time job helping oversee the rise of Portishead Town pushing for back-to-back promotions and a Step 4 dream, whilst reaching a historic Round Three in the FA Vase, ironically or perhaps due to the magic of non league with that same son that drew him to the club, now featuring as a stalwart in that historic men's first team, just one of over a thousand locals benefitting from this club at the heart of the community. Then we return to the club we last spoke to when competitive football was banned. Roydon are probably outside the football pyramid we usually cover, but the stories are real and the issues they face, are relevant to clubs up and down the land. Danny Adderson is Secretary of Roydon FC and much more, helping share the load of Chairman Alan Banks who has now done seven decades helping at the club. Less than half his age, Danny himself has done over two decades keeping the club thriving and he has big plans to keep that and the club going and get the club progressing up the pyramid. Jon Couch is our man from The Non League Paper this week. the weather may be looking to play a part this weekend but that won't mean a lack of non league news. We round up some of the same and preview what lies ahead.
A hugely successful song that was only coincidentally perfect for a movie, and a serious cover that knew where not to take the original too seriously. Wicked Game, originally by Chris Isaak, covered by Daisy Gray. Outro music is Threads by Portishead.

It feels like it's taken forever but here we are at the end of season 5, our journey through 1994. And as is now tradition we have put an episode together to discuss what our own personal top ten lists of the best albums released during the year are. After a brief chat about some of the albums that NEARLY made our top tens we then get into it and have a lovely conversation about bands like Portishead, Beastie Boys, Soundgarden, Senser, NIN, Kyuss and loads of others. We're also very grateful to some of our friends who contributed their thoughts about their favourite albums of 1994 - big love to the wonderful comedians Stephen Grant and Rich Wilson, and Steve & Gaz from Trve.Cvlt.Pop - stay tuned right at the end of the episode to hear their whole conversation about their choices where Steve manages to not mention the Chaka Demus & Pliers album which frankly none of us could have predicted. If you want to check our our playlist with songs from each of our own choices on it then you can find it here. We will be back ASAP with a whole new season of albums to look at as we go through 1995 but until then enjoy this episode and as always please do let us know your own faves from '94 if we totally missed them out.

Invincible UK out-rock trio Beak>, which includes Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, have released their fourth album, >>>>, (that’s four beak symbols!), about which they say, "At its core, we always wanted it to be head music (music for the ‘heads’, not headphone music) – listened to as an album, not as individual songs. This is why we are releasing this album with no singles or promo tracks.” That said, we’ll introduce you to a track that gives heavy feels for its sinister-yet-cinematic hook, a touch of classic Nirvana and prog-rock, and durability as “Denim.”
