For more than 15 years, Sharon Van Etten has worn her heart on her sleeve. Over 7 albums she's processed the raw emotions of life through some incredible songs, and continued to evolve her sound with every album. From early days playing indie folk and Americana, to big anthems, incorporating synths, and now collaborating with her band for the first time on the writing of an album. With The Attachment Theory on deck for her latest, I invited her to Take 5 with her songs of metamorphosis, and what she revealed was the very blueprint of her musical heart.Jethro Tull - 'We Used To Know' Mary Chapin Carpenter - 'Passionate Kisses'The Lemonheads - 'Ever' Nine Inch Nails - 'Terrible Lie' Portishead - 'Only You'

Back in September we made an appearance at the Haarlem Vinyl Festival for a special live podcast on the year 1994! Here's the second part of an abridged version of the show (we've had to cut out the sections we played music on the turntable due to copyright issues). For 1994, we were both astounded at how many great records we found, both established favourites and underrated classics. On this second part, we cover albums by Portishead, Massive Attack, Soundgarden, Blur, Yes, Oasis and more! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The current pushes and pulls / But I’m still here, I’m still rowing / Here in my paper boat / All I know is there’s water and above me the sky."

This week we focus on those magic people who make non league tick. The ones who run the clubs, maybe not in ownership terms but certainly in operational terms, not alone, as they both admit, but people who ensure their club not only survives but thrives in a difficult world, effectively the biggest fans of their clubs and in turn of huge fans of non league. First up, Nigel Osmond, from a dad on the sideline he now finds himself in a full-time job helping oversee the rise of Portishead Town pushing for back-to-back promotions and a Step 4 dream, whilst reaching a historic Round Three in the FA Vase, ironically or perhaps due to the magic of non league with that same son that drew him to the club, now featuring as a stalwart in that historic men's first team, just one of over a thousand locals benefitting from this club at the heart of the community. Then we return to the club we last spoke to when competitive football was banned. Roydon are probably outside the football pyramid we usually cover, but the stories are real and the issues they face, are relevant to clubs up and down the land. Danny Adderson is Secretary of Roydon FC and much more, helping share the load of Chairman Alan Banks who has now done seven decades helping at the club. Less than half his age, Danny himself has done over two decades keeping the club thriving and he has big plans to keep that and the club going and get the club progressing up the pyramid. Jon Couch is our man from The Non League Paper this week. the weather may be looking to play a part this weekend but that won't mean a lack of non league news. We round up some of the same and preview what lies ahead.
A hugely successful song that was only coincidentally perfect for a movie, and a serious cover that knew where not to take the original too seriously. Wicked Game, originally by Chris Isaak, covered by Daisy Gray. Outro music is Threads by Portishead.

It feels like it's taken forever but here we are at the end of season 5, our journey through 1994. And as is now tradition we have put an episode together to discuss what our own personal top ten lists of the best albums released during the year are. After a brief chat about some of the albums that NEARLY made our top tens we then get into it and have a lovely conversation about bands like Portishead, Beastie Boys, Soundgarden, Senser, NIN, Kyuss and loads of others. We're also very grateful to some of our friends who contributed their thoughts about their favourite albums of 1994 - big love to the wonderful comedians Stephen Grant and Rich Wilson, and Steve & Gaz from Trve.Cvlt.Pop - stay tuned right at the end of the episode to hear their whole conversation about their choices where Steve manages to not mention the Chaka Demus & Pliers album which frankly none of us could have predicted. If you want to check our our playlist with songs from each of our own choices on it then you can find it here. We will be back ASAP with a whole new season of albums to look at as we go through 1995 but until then enjoy this episode and as always please do let us know your own faves from '94 if we totally missed them out.

Video version: https://youtu.be/fJWJgieaZN4 From hosting parties as kids on two home hifis in a small west country town to playing some of the biggest clubs and festivals in the world, schooldays best friends Nick Halkes and Andy Smith have enjoyed amazing careers both individually and together. Here they talk about remixing , touring and so much more as they prepare for the release of the third instalment of the Reach Up Disco Wonderland compilation series on BBE that Andy compiles. As schooldays best friends Andy and Nick ran a mobile disco together and hunted for bargain 12 inch vinyl in their childhood home town of Portishead near Bristol. At this point they had no idea that Andy would supply beats and tour the world with Portishead before one of the top 100 djs in the world nor that Nick would go on to set up the XL and Positiva labels becoming one of the UK mst respected dance and electronic music industry executives. Reach Up launched more than five years ago at London basement venue The Waiting Rooms and soon after appeared at Carl Cox's night at Space, Ibiza where they played for three seasons on the bounce and then also began packing out their monthly London residency at Peckham's South London Soul Train (hosted at the legendary Bussey Building). Following the 2017 release of the Reach Up Disco Wonderland compilation on the renowned BBE Records, Volume 2 was released in 2019. Andy and Nick's re-edits of two tracks on the 2017 Reach Up Disco Wonderland comp were just the start. Nick's collaboration with Full Intention, both to release original music on Midnight Riot and remix State of the Nation feat the Jungle Brothers, gained support from Purple Disco Machine, Dimitri from Paris and Roger Sanchez. From there a chart topping Nick Reach Up remix of Hideaway by De'lacey followed and a Nick Reach Up collab with Birdee and vocal legend Barbara Tucker that scored coveted daytime Radio One play in the UK whilst hitting top 3 on Traxsource. An invitation to remix Mel C took the Nick Reach Up sound into new territory whilst a rework of Body Work by Hot Streak also took off. Most recently Nick was approached to remix the Kylie single Magic taken from her album appropriately entitled ‘Disco' and in October 2020 had 4 remixes of his simultaneously in the Music Week Upfront Top 20. In the time that all this was happening amongst other achievements Andys re-edit of Will Sessions & Amp Fiddler feat. Dames Brown – Lost Without You notched up a tune of the month accolade in Mixmag. Despite having much to look back on Reach Up's monthly radio show on the award-winning Soho Radio features regular guest mixes from the likes of Full Intention, Jumpin' Jack Frost, Young Pulse, Danny Rampling and more showcasing the hottest new music along with classic and more hidden gems from back in the day. Despite knowing each other for decades maybe this is still just the start for Nick and Andys Reach Up Disco Wonderland adventure?!

In this episode, we take an in-depth look at Portishead's groundbreaking debut album Dummy, ranked #67 on Apple Music's Top 100 Albums of All Time. Released in 1994, Dummy helped shape the trip-hop genre with its brooding atmosphere, hypnotic beats, and haunting vocals from Beth Gibbons. We'll explore how the band fused elements of jazz, hip-hop, and electronica to create a dark, cinematic soundscape that still resonates today. From the eerie tension of "Mysterons" and the spy-film vibes of "Sour Times" to the emotional depth of "Roads" and the iconic "Glory Box," we break down each track and discuss what made this album so influential. Tune in for a journey into one of the most important albums of the '90s and how it continues to shape modern music.
In the premiere episode of our 4th season, we discuss Portishead's unexpected, genre defining debut.
Ever wondered how an award-winning musician navigates an entire orchestra of analog synthesizers? Join us on this week's Lost in Sound as Paul sits down with Will Gregory, one half of Goldfrapp and head honcho of the Will Gregory Moog Ensemble. You'll hear about his journey from playing saxophone with Tears for Fears in the '80s to collaborating with industry giants like Peter Gabriel, The Cure, and Portishead in the '90s. Discover the inspiration behind the Moog Ensemble's latest album, ignited by Wendy Carlos's "Switched-On Bach." Gregory sheds light on the unique challenges and nostalgic appeal of using vintage synthesizers, the logistics of live performances, and the thematic choice of making an album about Archimedes, connecting mathematics with music in unexpected ways. The pandemic reshaped his creative process, resulting in compositions that blend literal and abstract interpretations, akin to a film score for an imaginary biopic about the ancient mathematician. Explore the ever-evolving landscape of music consumption with us, as we discuss the shift from detailed jazz albums to the instant gratification of digital platforms like TikTok. Gregory reflects on the impact of these changes on listening habits and the importance of live performances in sustaining the music industry. We also delve into the cultural and artistic shifts of the early '70s, highlighting the necessity of artistic growth and the continuous battle with creative uncertainty. This episode offers an intimate look at the artistic journey and evolution of an innovative musician who has consistently pushed musical boundaries.
The 90s featured the rise of a several varieties of electronic music into the mainstream. The electronica of Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers and the industrial of Nine Inch Nails and Stabbing Westward became household names thanks to MTV and alternative radio station playlists, but not far behind were the late night grooves of trip-hop thanks to Portishead and Massive Attack. Combining samples and live instrumentation, and taking influence from reggae, dub, soul, jazz and more, the 1998 third album Mezzanine slowly unfurls from the start with opener "Angel" and keeps the listener entranced. From there, the band carefully weaves drum, bass, synths, and a variety of other instruments with three perfectly matched guest vocalists into a constantly shifting sonic landscape. In 1994, new records from bands such as The Cranberries, Massive Attack, Beck, and Portishead made their way into the American mainstream, thanks partly to KCRW. LA’s 1984 Olympics were the pinnacle of organization, profitability, and viewership. Can LA’s 2028 Games build on that and the momentum from 2024’s successful Paris Games? Both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are hoping to mobilize youth support online through fan videos, candid clips, memes, and the language of TikTok. Every state in the country allows no-fault divorce, meaning you don’t need a reason to get one. But some on the far-right are now trying to change that. In Utah, just a handful of school districts can get books pulled from school libraries. Literature by Margaret Atwood and Judy Blume are now censored for being “pornographic.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIszb9nh3r4https://open.spotify.com/artist/64kjTvGmTTpYpoSX0uNJ6QRapper Jesse Medina continues to pour his heart and soul into his music, putting out hard-hitting tracks. The most recent is “No Ma'am” off an upcoming EP titled Extrasensory Modes ofPerception.“No Ma'am” features Medina's boy Q-Timer, who he has been playing music with for years. They wrote the song together and put it to a beat by producer Barry Bones, who they bothworked with on Medina's recent track “In My Head.”While his first single was more about using trippy poetry describing the world of drug psychosis, this one is a little more fun and playful with a focus on “chillin' with his homies.”“We went over to Barry's lab and did it over his beat,” Medina said. “It was based off the show‘Married With Children' and Al Bundy's little crew of homies. You know, it's about looking out foryour bro, having guy time and just kind of talking shit.”Medina admits there is some randomness to the song, and he and Q-Timer are just “spittin'.”The inspiration for the bars kind of just came out of thin air.“It's really about the brotherhood,” Medina said. “It is kind of the camaraderie between me andQ-Timer. It's about sticking with your boys. You know, there are people in relationships, but youcan go out and kick it with your homies. I like the word play and like the beat a lot, and the hookis hella dope to me. That kind of sums it up.”Medina said the bars and the beat carry the lyrical flow. The beat has an element of intrigue to itbefore the lyrics kick in.Here they comeAll my gunsMy day onesLike when you see me runThe story behind the beat is an interesting one. Jesse said there was initially another beat that“No Ma'am” was written to. Somehow it went missing, and no matter how hard they looked, theysimply couldn't find it. Sometimes that is just the way things go, and resiliency is key. While itthrew them off at first, Medina, Q-Timer and Barry Bones started from square one and put outsomething to be proud of.“Q found this beat and it was sounding hard,” Jesse said. “When I heard it, I knew it was a hellasick beat. I love it, man. It's beyond what I wanted it to be. This beat changed the delivery andmade it something else.”He has heard solid feedback from his fans about his last track, “In My Head,” and with “NoMa'am” that praise has only continued and increased. He said this is one for the friends andfans alike.“This is for the hip-hop heads.”Extrasensory Modes of Perception has nine tracks and will be released next month. It is a mix ofdifferent styles of hip-hop. Jesse said it is beyond labeling in a genre. Each track differs from thenext and will keep the listeners on their toes and on the edge of their seats in anticipation. Whilethere is a sense of randomness, he said there is also a method to the madness.“If I hear something in my head, I'm just going to execute it, and there's no telling what kind ofmusic will come from it,” he said. “I'm looking at the challenge and having fun with it every time. But there is a theme — you can hear the hip-hop influences no matter what song it is.”Jesse was born and raised in San Jose, and music is simply a massive part of his life. When hehears music, lyrics will just flow through him, but sometimes he takes his time to make sureeverything is perfect. Medina thrives off using straight emotion with the beat.He has influences that date back to music his mother would play like Prince, Rick James andthe Isley Brothers. Some of his current inspirations include groups like the Gorillaz, FreestyleFellowship, TDE, Gnarls Barkley, Deftones, Chelsea Grin and Portishead. When he was just 10 years old, he started writing music. Through life experiences and hisinspirations, he has been able to create his own personal sound and touch.Jesse is always working. His current projects are a three-song EP, called This Way Westward,as well as an EP with unreleased songs called Nostalgia Nuggets.“No Ma'am” is available on all platforms, and Extrasensory Modes of Perception is scheduledfor an August 3 release.Be sure to follow Jesse Medina's musical journey on all platforms.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/creator-to-creators-with-meosha-bean--4460322/support.
When you're talking about bands that defined 90s music it's hard not to include Oasis which means that simply doing an episode on their debut album 'Definitely Maybe' from 1994 is a minefield because everyone has an opinion on this one, usually either VERY positive or VERY VERY negative. Krister had this album at the time and remembers enjoying it for the most part, Dave has never previously deliberately listened to Oasis in his life but still knows most of the songs on here through mere osmosis. Will either of us end up loving this one by the end of a reassessment? Not completely, no, but we both have songs on here that we really love it turns out. We also talk about bands like Portishead, Manic Street Preachers and, erm, Indie Kylie along the way. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!
Tomorrow's episode of Electronically Yours features an alumni of the podcast, Will Gregory. In this second episode, Will discusses his first ever Moog Ensemble album, and his love of electronic music in general. Those who have never witnessed a Moog Ensemble live concert are really missing out – they are unique… He is of course most famous for being half of electronic pop band Goldfrapp, and for his collaborations with Adrian Utley from Portishead. Invincible UK out-rock trio Beak>, which includes Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, have released their fourth album, >>>>, (that’s four beak symbols!), about which they say, "At its core, we always wanted it to be head music (music for the ‘heads’, not headphone music) – listened to as an album, not as individual songs. This is why we are releasing this album with no singles or promo tracks.” That said, we’ll introduce you to a track that gives heavy feels for its sinister-yet-cinematic hook, a touch of classic Nirvana and prog-rock, and durability as “Denim.”
In part 1 of a cheating album exchange, Evil and dl talk one of the coolest albums... ever

This week the Vietnamese photographer and author Ngoc Minh Ngo. Ngoc was born in Vietnam in 1963 and grew up during the Vietnam War. Her father, Chau Minh Ngo, was a colonel in the South Vietnam Army and her mother Phi Truong became a nurse's aide after raising eight children. Ngoc was the sixth child—she has four sisters and three brothers. Despite enduring a brutal war, Ngoc describes her childhood as enchanting and beautiful. Her parents did all they could to protect their family and offer some normalcy to those troubling times by spending time on the beach. At the age of 12, shortly before the end of the war in 1975, the family were evacuated to the US and settled in Sacramento, California where, with the help of sponsors, they began a new life. Ngoc described herself as a very shy and reserved child but that did not hinder her development. She found her own way to the University of California, Berkeley where she earned a BA followed by a Masters of Landscape Design at Columbia University. After spending some time traveling to Japan and Europe Ngoc made her way to New York with a view to working in painting restoration. But after a chance encounter while working on a feature film she discovered her true passion was to be photography, so she learned black & white photography and developing. Ngoc's images have been published The World of Interiors, T Magazine, Vogue, Architectural Digest, Cabana, and House & Garden UK. She is also the author of five books: Bringing Nature Home: Floral Arrangements Inspired by Nature; In Bloom: Creating and Living with Flowers, and Eden Revisited: A Garden in Northern Morocco, The House of a Lifetime, and New York Green. She is currently working on a new book entitled Roses in the Garden inspired by her father's death. She has, she says, always been independent and self-contained, paving her own way as a refugee and re-imaging her life as a reflection through the beauty of the images she creates. Ngoc and her husband, the photographer Julian Wass, live in New York. They have a daughter Lily who works in public health and is also a poet. A signature of Beth Gibbons' voice is that you recognize the artist immediately, ingrained in our hearts and minds as the sound of Portishead. Deep, lush, and profoundly engaging, Gibbons releases her debut album Lives Outgrown mid-May. Recorded over a period of ten years, this album may be her most personal output to date, digging into sustained reflection and change, as echoed on “Floating On A Moment.”
