Sharing the same timeline as ATL-based singer-songwriter, poet activist, and lyrical legend Speech, born Todd Thomas, of the acclaimed American hip hop group Arrested Development, is something that should bring us all a little comfort and peace in these crazy times. Having first established the groundbreaking group nearly four decades ago, Arrested Development pried open our culture's sore soul with perhaps one of the most influential albums, not just in hip hop and conscious rap, but in American music, 1992's "3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days In The Life Of...." Over the next three decades, the artist would go on to record several albums with the group, as well as eagerly establishing a solo career that covers just as much groovy ground as time continues moving forward, and history horrifically repeats itself. “North Star” 20th-anniversary reflections As they explore the Expanse in search of the Xindi superweapon, the Enterprise crew runs across a planet inhabited by humans. So occasionally one of us will make a joke in-episode where my brain goes “Ding! Fodder for the write up” and then I have time to think on it, flush it out, edit out the dumb bits, or forget my original idea, have it again, and essentially…do the same thing, only faster and more of the dumb bits get left in. Anyway. That happened here and we're doing the second version of it (hence that lead-in sentence being the lead-in.) So, for those who weren't there, there was this time in the early-to-mid 2010s, right around the time A) the movie we're talking about it coming out and B) Nerd/Fandom culture is kinda hitting the apex of where that's going to go, where we loved combining different fandom IPs on t-shirts and mugs and stuff that we could take digital art and print it on. So think things like R2-D2 and C3PO riding on the Tardis, or it's the Pink power ranger with that mean girls quote about wearing pink on Wednesdays, or Link and Zelda riding on Pokémon or whatever. So this joke in the episode led me to wonder if there were any Avengers x Arrested Development shirts like this and after about 10 minutes of internet searching, I'm coming up mostly empty, but I cannot shake the feeling they existed at one point. I can picture it in my mind: Tobias a blue Hulk, Iron Man as Gob using the Aztec Tomb with War Machine as his assistant, Black Widow as Maeby asking Cap where he got his “cross necklace” so she can go on a ski trip, Hawkeye driving the stair car while the Maximoffs ride on the back….yeah. The shirt draws itself. Or it would, if it were 2015 and I had any artistic abilities. Oh well. Anyway, we did an episode about Avengers: Age of Ultron. It's a two-parter. This is the first part. David Cross is one of the best of the alternative stand-up comics who emerged in the 1990s. He also co-created a legendary HBO sketch show AND was the actor behind one of the most cringe-inducing characters in a show full of them. We wonder what he does in his spare time! A self-described "misfit" in his Georgia hometown, David found his people when he moved first to New York, then to LA in search of comedy stardom. He found it -- but in an alternative way issuing a number of well-received comedy albums on the SubPop label (at that time mostly known for grunge music), then teaming with Bob Odenkirk on Mr. Show, then owning the role of Tobias Funke on Arrested Development -- a therapist who doesn't really want to be a therapist -- instead he dreams of show business success (without a lick talent to back those dreams). “It's not ripped from the headlines. We're not using any of [the Buss family's] real-life stories and putting them into our show. Because Mindy [Kaling], Ike [Barinholtz], and I have so many influences like Arrested Development, 30 Rock, The Office and Succession, we're coming up with our own fun stories and fun situations to put this dysfunctional, very wealthy, successful family into a blender and then have them going back and forth and arguing and solving problems together and against each other,” says David Stassen, showrunner of Running Point, about taking inspiration from Los Angeles Lakers' President, Jeannie Buss's family and turning it into a hit TV show.   In this episode, we chat with David Stassen, showrunner and co-creator of the Netflix show, Running Point, that's just been given the greenlight for Season 2. The show centers on Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson), the daughter of a powerful basketball magnate. She's now taken the helm of the legendary team with the help – or hindrance – of her four well-meaning but unpredictable brothers.    While firmly set in the brawny world of basketball, Stassen talks about the true core of Running Point, which revolves around the siblings trying to earn the love of their deceased father. To get this particular narrative right, Stassen says the writers room spent a lot of time focusing on the family dynamics and differentiating each character's struggles and traits. Much of the comedy in the show comes from the clashes between the siblings and their attempts to live up to their father's fierce expectations. Stassen also talks about how the character Isla, a woman at the center of a very male-dominated universe, relies on speeches from gangster films to communicate with her basketball team.  “Movies transcend our society. So, I think it's a great way to connect and even if you haven't seen Casino, most people know that Joe Pesci is viewed as a very scary person on film. We were lucky enough to get the rights to show a scene. So even if you didn't know anything about it, you got to see the moment. It's just a fun thing to have this beautiful, airy Kate Hudson taking on these roles of the tough Italian mobster or the contract killer getting revenge for his dead dog, like John Wick. And I guess it probably speaks to something bigger about this show – about a woman in a man's world. But at the same time, Isla is powerful in her own way, right? She's powerful 95% of the time just being herself and standing up for herself.
