“It's not ripped from the headlines. We're not using any of [the Buss family's] real-life stories and putting them into our show. Because Mindy [Kaling], Ike [Barinholtz], and I have so many influences like Arrested Development, 30 Rock, The Office and Succession, we're coming up with our own fun stories and fun situations to put this dysfunctional, very wealthy, successful family into a blender and then have them going back and forth and arguing and solving problems together and against each other,” says David Stassen, showrunner of Running Point, about taking inspiration from Los Angeles Lakers' President, Jeannie Buss's family and turning it into a hit TV show. In this episode, we chat with David Stassen, showrunner and co-creator of the Netflix show, Running Point, that's just been given the greenlight for Season 2. The show centers on Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson), the daughter of a powerful basketball magnate. She's now taken the helm of the legendary team with the help – or hindrance – of her four well-meaning but unpredictable brothers. While firmly set in the brawny world of basketball, Stassen talks about the true core of Running Point, which revolves around the siblings trying to earn the love of their deceased father. To get this particular narrative right, Stassen says the writers room spent a lot of time focusing on the family dynamics and differentiating each character's struggles and traits. Much of the comedy in the show comes from the clashes between the siblings and their attempts to live up to their father's fierce expectations. Stassen also talks about how the character Isla, a woman at the center of a very male-dominated universe, relies on speeches from gangster films to communicate with her basketball team. “Movies transcend our society. So, I think it's a great way to connect and even if you haven't seen Casino, most people know that Joe Pesci is viewed as a very scary person on film. We were lucky enough to get the rights to show a scene. So even if you didn't know anything about it, you got to see the moment. It's just a fun thing to have this beautiful, airy Kate Hudson taking on these roles of the tough Italian mobster or the contract killer getting revenge for his dead dog, like John Wick. And I guess it probably speaks to something bigger about this show – about a woman in a man's world. But at the same time, Isla is powerful in her own way, right? She's powerful 95% of the time just being herself and standing up for herself. And then the fun flourishes are maybe using a movie reference to illustrate a point,” says Stassen. To hear more about Running Point and Stassen's advice to TV writers, listen to the podcast.

Award-winning actress, history-making supermodel, staunch philanthropist, conscientious activist, author, and loving mom Patricia Velásquez applies an eternal creative spirit to everything she does-whether it be starring in blockbusters a la The Curse of La Llorona or launching the Wayúu Tayá Foundation and participating on the UNESCO Board. Regardless, she makes major strides by drawing on instinct and deliberately paving her own path. Patricia's success represented a turning point in fashion as she drew industry attention to South America for the first time. She experienced a big break upon becoming "the first model Karl Lagerfeld ever photographed" and going on to walk in shows, star in editorial spreads, and front ads for Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Chloe, Cover Girl, and Victoria's Secret, to name a few. Resonating around the globe, she appeared in Oprah and Ford Models' "Supermodel of the World" contest as well. Not to mention, she graced the covers of Vogue, Bazaar, Marie Claire, and many others. She artfully channeled her dance training during shoots. Simultaneously, she ignited an impressive acting career. Not only did she star in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, but she also appeared on The L Word, Arrested Development, CSI: Miami, Ugly Betty, List of a Lifetime, Hawaii 5-0 and Rescue Me. Throughout her career, she capitalized on every opportunity to give back. In 2002, she founded the Wayúu Tayá Foundation. This non-profit preserves the culture of indigenous groups throughout Latin America by way of support and the drastic improvement of living conditions. UNESCO invited her to be a celebrity advocate, and the United Nations granted her the 2009 Women Together Award. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod. (Please Subscribe)
THE VIBEwith Kelly Cardenas presentsSPEECH - ARRESTED DEVELOPMENTTodd "Speech" Thomas is a Grammy-winning artist, poet, and trailblazing cultural icon whose impact on hip-hop, social justice, and Black culture is both profound and enduring. As the visionary leader of Arrested Development, the two-time Grammy Award-winning hip-hop collective, Speech has used music as a force for empowerment, reflection, and positive change. His artistry and activism have paved the way for generations, blending socially conscious themes with a commitment to equity, unity, and creative integrity. Since their debut in 1991, Speech and Arrested Development have been a groundbreaking influence in hip-hop, celebrated for their bold reimagining of the genre. Their debut album, 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life of…, sold over 4 million copies and garnered numerous accolades, including Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Rap Single (“Tennessee”), two MTV Awards, a Soul Train Music Award, and an NAACP Image Award. Rolling Stone named them Band of the Year, and VH-1 recognized Arrested Development as one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time. Their hit song "Tennessee" was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of the "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll," a testament to its lasting influence on music and culture. Speech's contributions were spotlighted in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's acclaimed documentary South Has Got Something to Say, where he remarked, “There would be no Outkast without Arrested Development”—a powerful reminder of Arrested Development's role in shaping Southern hip-hop and paving the way for future icons. Arrested Development's fusion of Afrocentric spirituality, social consciousness, and community-centered themes forged a path in hip-hop that few have rivaled, influencing artists globally and solidifying their legacy as cultural innovators. Despite these contributions, Speech and Arrested Development's pioneering role in popular culture is often underrecognized, though their influence is undeniable. In 2024, Speech's legendary status was further cemented as he joined an elite lineup performing with Queen Latifah, Common, De La Soul on the CBS Grammy Tribute to 50 Years of Hip Hop. This performance underscored his contributions to the genre, which were also recently honored by the State of Georgia with the prestigious Privilege House Resolution, recognizing his lifelong dedication to the arts, social justice, and cultural advocacy. Hip hop as a genre is getting more attention from the music industry in Nashville. A good thing! But not all hip hop music is the same, nor are the ways in which hip hop music is made. The old technique, i.e., sampling, is as popular as ever, but in certain aspects it is different from when it was introduced.Once a month, a group of producers gathers together to play each other's tracks they are working on. Music City Producers, based out of Madison, hosts producers of all types of hip hop and its derivatives: boom-bap, trap, R&B, lo-fi, EDM, trance, club, etc.Today we meet some of the producers and talk with them about their music, how they create it, and why samples are important to how they work.We also follow the process of how to use samples to create a hip hop song. Hip hop artist M Slago will travel with host Khalil Ekulona as they venture into a record store to shop for vinyl, head back to the studio to listen, and create their own hip hop track for all to hear.Guests Kamaal Malak, musician, Arrested Development; Artist In Residence/Vanderbilt University Jason Rawls, aka J Rawls, hip hop musician and Assistant Professor of Hip Hop at Ohio State University Corey Parker aka Just Vybes, musician, producer Johnathan Harris aka Jon Jyzzle, musician, producer Sims Lester aka The Orbit Sound

Christmas Eve is the worst travel day of the year, which means an airport is also the best, most dramatic setting you can get for a Christmas movie. At least, that's what this week's film will have you believe. Carry-On is the latest holiday offering from the good people at Netflix: A tense, smartly-written thriller about TSA agent Taron Egerton trying to stop mercenary terrorist Jason Bateman from detonating a chemical weapon in a crowded airport on Christmas Eve. Along the way, we get a few classic holiday needledrops, some excellent action sequences, and a chilling villain turn from Jason Bateman. Also in this episode, we discuss the possibility that Carry-On may be the true ending to Arrested Development, the phenomenon of "Whamageddon," and the state of Netflix's original film slate. Watching, reading, and listening to things a second, third or even a million times can offer you a whole new experience. Why do we pick up the same thing to enjoy again? It could be nostalgia, it could be the need for comfort in the familiar, maybe it's research, or maybe you're rewatching the early episodes of a series so you can get more enjoyment out of new, later episodes that you haven't seen before? Whatever the reason it can be an interesting experience, especially when you notice a whole bunch of things you never thought about before! You can see it through new eyes. And because you know how things ended up you can focus more on details, aesthetics, and character development rather than mainly on the plot. Since I've got lots of streaming services now I'm rewatching heaps of faves. I haven't seen the later seasons of Archer so I'm rewatching that at the moment. It's my 3rd time on these early episodes and I'm noticing new things as well as seeing things in a new light. I noticed Jessica Walter (Mallory Archer), Jeffrey Tambor (Len Trexlor), Judy Greer (Cheryl Tunt), were all in Arrested Development together. I had previously believed that Archer was an irredeemable arsehole from the get-go, and all the other characters were basically good but became arseholes as a reaction to Archer, but a rewatch shows that they were always ALL aresholes exactly as bad as him! I'm also shocked by how brutal and violent the show is and how often they don't even fully resole endings. When you revisit things often they're not how you remember them. Usually that's just because your memory is faulty and you have an interesting experience seeing something how it REALLY is. But it's awful when things actually HAVE changed; an old fave that's been retconned and edited... witness the stupid stormtroopers riding badly animated dinosaurs in Starwars! In comics like Asterix you can drink in the art and the historical and political references, find yourself noticing little side stories in panels and all sorts of character relationships going on. What are your fave things to revisit? And why do you do it? Or maybe you never revisit things? This week, we're having a ball -- scrapping, yelling and mixing it up, loving every minute with this damn crew as we close out Gene HackMarch with a regal induction into the podcast canon. It's 2001's The Royal Tenenbaums, directed by Wes Anderson, co-written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson, and starring Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Danny Glover and the voice of Alec Baldwin. While Anderson launched himself to prominence with Rushmore, Tenenbaums marked the full-throated arrival of a confident new voice in American cinema, and arguably remains his best effort nearly two and a half decades later. Perfectly utilising Hackman's gruff hard-ass patriarcal screen presence, cut by the man's easily over-looked and ofter under-utilised comedic abilities, it's a redemption story for an almost historically bad dad -- a funny, feel-good movie that says it's never too late to make things right. Plus: Hayley's got another theatrical outing to report on as she headed to the cinema to catch Black Bag, while both hosts have food fixations on the brain this week. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, The Royal Tenenbaums is currently available to stream on Disney+, as well as Crave and Starz north of the border. Other works discussed this week include Presence, Kimi, Ocean's Eleven, Enemy of the State, The Conversation, No Way Out, Dirty Dancing, Step Up, Center Stage, Stranger Than Fiction, Arrested Development, Hard Eight, Sliding Doors, The French Dispatch, The French Connection, Isle of Dogs, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Bottle Rocket, Asteroid City and Eastbound and Down, among many more. We don't know when we'll be back or what we'll be watching, as events in Hayley's life are making recording rather difficult over the next few months. But we will return, so don't fret! We just may be going down to a bi-weekly schedule for the next little while until things blow over. And don't worry, it's nothing bad. Updates coming on our social media feeds when we have them, but until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Send us a text! (add your email to get a response)Are your parents bad at dealing with difficult emotions? Do they fall apart, ignore, criticize or withdraw when you need them the most? Emotional immaturity in parents causes profound ripple effects through generations, creating patterns many of us don't recognize until we're deep into adulthood. Based on Dr. Lindsay Gibson's model of emotional immaturity, we describe the four distinct types of emotionally immature parents —emotional, driven, passive, and rejecting—and how each type uniquely shapes their children's development. We explore why this topic has exploded in popularity, tracing it back to historical contexts that shaped how each generation views parenting. When survival is the primary goal, emotional complexity takes a back seat, creating generations of parents who never developed the skills to handle their own emotions, let alone support their children's emotional growth. When children's own personal growth is stunted by a dysfunctional family, they adopt specific roles as survival mechanisms that often persist into adulthood, limiting their full expression and causing recurring relationship challenges.Whether you're struggling with an emotionally immature parent or recognizing these patterns in yourself as a parent, we suggest a path toward healing. This path includes awareness, grieving what you didn't receive, exploring yourself beyond your family role, and developing boundaries based on mutual respect rather than obligation. If you're ready to break free from toxic dynamics with immature parents and discover your authentic self outside of these roles, book a free call with Dr. Kibby to learn how she can guide you through your healing journey.Resources:Gibson, L. Jim Vallely Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Sitting down with Emmy and WGA award winner, Jim Vallely was a cozy, comfortable, fun, and funny hang. He even told us a joke joke, on request. It's one he's been “testing” as part of a sociological experiment of sorts. Win/win, we got a laugh with a lesson. Who knew that having a seizure in 6th grade would lead to a career as a TV comedy writer. Jim takes us through and it makes perfect sense. This accountant studying student just happened to sit next to the right guy at an NYU audition, ask his mother the right question on the right day, marry the right girl, move into the right apartment, partner with the right actor/comedian, Jonathan Schmock, become 1/2 of The Funny Boys comedy team, appear on Johnny Carson, co-star on the sitcom, Double Trouble, and then write on The Golden Girls, one of the most successful sitcoms of all time. Brotherly Love, Ladies Man, Action, Two and a Half Men, My Wife and Kids, The John Larriquette Show, Till Death, Extended Family, as well as Arrested Development, for which he garnered 4 Emmy nominations, and the aforementioned awards, followed. Jim was an executive producer and co-creator with Will Arnett and Michael Hurwitz of Running Wilde on Fox. There's more. Jim tells a great Carl Reiner/Alan Brady story, tells us how the real Kramer, Larry David, Bill Maher, Callie Khouri, Chris Thompson, Don Reo, Mitchell Hurwitz, Will Arnett, and Jay Mohr factor into his story, gives us the before, during, and after of his career milestones, and speaks with great pride and tenderness about the great loves and joys of his life, his talented wife, Maggie, and his successful daughter, Tannis. We talked about our friends, Taylor Negron and Ron Zimmerman. There is no friend like Jim. His love, devotion, and care for Ron, was a gift he gave all of us who loved him. Jim's a tender-hearted, special man. And boy, is he funny. A very funny boy, indeed! Having made her television debut at just 9 years old, Alessandra Torresani is well-known for her roles in The Big Bang Theory, Caprica, Arrested Development and Malcolm in the Middle. In our interview with Alessandra, she gets candid about navigating adult life as an actress after she was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 at the age of 22. Despite being discouraged from talking about her mental health openly, Alessandra realized the importance of encouraging stigma-free conversations about mental health after she decided to share her story. She said, “I'm Alessandra Torresani, and I am bipolar. Who wants to talk?” It turns out, a lot of people did. This “talk” kick-started her advocacy to normalize talking about mental health issues, and she has since started her own podcast, called EmotionAL Support, where she discusses mental health with her guests. In this episode, we discuss: - Alexandra's childhood and her journey through misdiagnosis - The importance that documenting both highs and lows has on receiving an accurate diagnosis - Alessandra's work with NAMI, and the conference where she shared her bipolar diagnosis - How toxic positivity discourages people from talking about their struggles - Finding emotional support and comfort - The difference between mental health and mental illness - What we can do to help destigmatize the conversation around mental health According to Alessandra, it's vital that we start talking about mental health openly and encourage people to seek support and medical help when they need it. This is the only way to foster an environment where every single one of us can celebrate our individuality and uniqueness. Today our guest is Maggie Rowe, former writer on Arrested Development and author of Sin Bravely, a book about her experiences with moral scrupulosity, or sin-focused OCD. We talk a lot about OCD on this show, so here's a guest who wrote an entire book about growing up with religious obsessions! She'll tell us about her first obsessions about what was and was not sin, how she started to analyze the Bible with a critical mind to try to understand how to avoid hell, and how her parents tried to help but her church leaders didn't understand OCD and made it worse. We'll talk about the compulsions she would engage in to make sure she was being the right amount of righteous, how she checked herself into a treatment facility for Christians, the incorrect diagnosis of bulimia she received, and how she finally got diagnosed with moral scrupulosity and began getting the treatment she actually needed. Neighborhoods are important to Zack, and he's looking for a new place to move his family. Luckily, Kent and Joel are both creating special subdivisions of hand-selected citizens. However, the residents are all annoying families from various TV series that were suggested by you, the listener. Therefore, on this episode of Baconsale, we'll be doing a schoolyard pick of characters from sitcoms such as Arrested Development, The Simpsons, Family Matters, The Beverly Hillbillies, Married with Children, The Goldbergs, Home Improvement, The Addams Family, Malcolm in the Middle, and more. Then it's up to Zack to decide which neighbors he'd like to deal with. There will be plenty of theme song singing, some over-the-shoulder reading, and the shocking revelation that Kent likes blondes. Press place to decide whether you'd like to live in Kenterville or The Sunshine Sitcommune.

Having never seen a full episode of the show, this movie is possibly the worst way to be introduced to the property. It's just rich white people complaining and being awful but not in a fun way like Arrested Development. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We’re heading back into the Boy Meets World writer’s room to learn about crafting a sitcom, directly from Emmy award winner, Barbie Feldman. Barbie reveals how a clerical error, and fetching comic books, led to her first writer’s room and penning Season 5 classics like “Raging Cory” and “Eric Hollywood.” And she shares stories from other legendary shows on her resume, like Arrested Development, How I Met Your Mother and Nobody Wants This. It all started with Shawn, Eric & Topanga - but only one cast member caused the most rewrites! Find out who when we go behind the scenes on a new Pod Meets World…See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On today's episode, I talk to comedian and actor David Cross. Originally from Roswell, GA, David started as a stand-up at the age of seventeen, first in Boston and then in New York in the '90s. David's television career began with a writing job on the The Ben Stiller Show. It was around this time that he met Bob Odenkirk, and they started performing together, eventually creating the brilliant sketch show Mr. Show, which ran on HBO for four seasons. Since then, David has done a million awesome things including Arrested Development, The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, as well as smaller parts in everything from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind to What We Do in the Shadows. He's also performed eight stand-up albums and specials; his latest Worst Daddy in the World just came out last year on 800 Pound Gorilla, and it's a delight! And of course, you can see him touring this spring, if you live in Canada or Europe. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. John was away for work this week and got sick so this is his "Flu Game", as we recap the final week of the Champions Wild Card, and what a week it was. The week featured one of the games of the year, a wonderful two-game final between three of our favorite competitors in the tournament, and another beautifully connected anecdote and response from Drew. Plus, a successfully pulled-off Arrested Development gag, Jay Fisher cementing his place as one of the best anecdotalists in the show's recent history, and we dive deep on the USS Nautilus–how appropriate. Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha is one of the great novels of the twentieth century and a prime example of literature that transforms the deeply personal into something universal. For Phil and JF in this episode, the novel serves as the foundation for a discussion on spiritual journeying, the ideal of enlightenment, and the challenge of living in an ensouled universe.
